Breve relacion de la peregrinacion que ha hecho de la mayor parte del mundo.

Madrid, Juan Garcia Infacon, 1680.. 4to. (20), 360 pp. With the title page within a border of cast fleurons, woodcut arms of the dedicatee Charles II of Spain, and several woodcut initials and tailpieces. Modern gilt blue morocco by the leading Barcelona binder Emilio Brugalla (1901-87), also active in Madrid, signed at the foot of the front turn-in: "Brugalla 1946", with the arms of the Spanish bibliophile Isidoro Fernandez (1878-1963) stamped in gold on front and back in a blind-stamped panel, double fillets on binding edges and richly gold-tooled turn-ins, gilt edges.. First edition of an interesting and detailed account of the first overland journey from Spain to the East Indies (1671-80) made by the Spanish missionary Sebastian Pedro Cubero. Interestingly, Cubero covered most of his route by land, as would later Careri, thus constantly being able to observe the customs, religions, ceremonies and costumes of the peoples he visited, describing them in considerable detail. After spending time in Italy, where he was appointed as a missionary to Asia and the East Indies, Cubero travelled by way of Istanbul and Moscow to Iran, visiting Isfahan ("Hispaham") and Bandar Abbas, after which he finally arrived in India. After crossing to Malacca he was imprisoned by the Dutch and later banished from the city. He then proceeded to the Philippines and ultimately, by way of Mexico, back to Europe. "After a stint as confessor in the imperial army in Hungary, Cubero became one of the notable travellers of the seventeenth century. What set him apart was the variety of his traveller's hats. Most obviously a missionary [...], he also became [...] a representative figure of the whole exploratory enterprise. By circumnavigating the globe in his travels, he was recognized in his own time to be another Magellan, Drake, or Cavendish" (Noonan). - With bookplates on pastedown; t. p. has contemporary ownership of Pere de Ribes-Vallgomera de Boixadors, Marques de Alferras, ennobled by Philip V in 1702. Some occasional foxing and a small restoration, replacing the outer lower corner of the t. p. in a subtle facsimile. Very narrow margins, occasionally just shaving the headlines and quire signatures, otherwise in very good condition. Rare in the market: two copies appeared at auction in the last 50 years. - Palau 65756. Sabin 17819. OCLC 14110894. Howgego C225. Lach & Van Kley III, 360. Maggs cat. 495, 303. This ed. not in Salva. For the author cf. F.T. Noonan, The road to Jerusalem: pilgrimage and travel in the age of discovery (2007), p. 104.

L'art d'ecrire. Paris, chez l'auteur, 1680. Folio. With large woodcut vignette on letterpress title-page, a woodcut headpiece, 2 woodcut decorative initials, decorations built up from cast arabesque fleurons, an engraved calligraphic title-page and 22 (of 23) engraved leaves with calligraphic writing samples and illustrations, all engraved by Louis Senault. Contemporary calf, gold-tooled spine, and unusual marbled paste-downs.

Becker, Practice of letters 91 (without [pi]1-2, B1-2); Berlin Kat. 5117 (lacking [pi]1-2, A1); Muller, Cat. Calligr., 1 (22 ll.); Marzoli 56; not in Ekström Coll. First edition of a very elaborate basic writing course and copy book, minutely explaining the composition of the various calligraphic hands (françoises, bâtardes, financieres), as well as pen decorations and drawings. The engraved title-page reads, "L'art d'écrire ou Le moyen d'exceler en cet art sans maistre" (suggesting a break with the ancient tradition of learning by apprenticeship or under a school master). The writing examples include numerous exercises of single letters and many alphabets. It also includes illustrations of posture at the writing table, the way to hold the pen and nibs with the angle of cutting and of the nib to the paper. Instructions are often added as well, engraved in a small neat hand, and attention is given to the lay-out of a manuscript. The course was designed by Jean Baptiste Allais, dit le Beaulieu, and engraved by Louis Senault, who was a leading writing master in his own right and therefore ideally suited to engrave his colleague's writing book. At this date the pointed pen was replacing the broad-nibbed pen, and one of the illustrations present here shows the nib of a pointed pen with the split tip spread open. Some copies were issued with only 4 letterpress leaves (quire A) and many copies are missing letterpress leaves or plates. With several calligraphic exercises by owners on the endpapers, one with "Fait par moy René Brisson", another "fait par moy Bernard le Brot[?] ... a Paris" and a calligraphic title signed "Guerbois fils".Lacking the leaf on cutting the pen (which included no writing samples), but otherwise a good copy, with one decorative flourish on the title-page shaved, and some spots and stains. The binding is worn, with some cut marks and scrapes, and 3 small parts of the backstrip have been restored with gold-tooling. A rare, attractive and detailed 17th-century French writing book in a contemporary binding.

Antille (7) Isole nel.America, delli Spagnoli. Francesi, Ingilesi, Ollandesi, e de naturali del paese

1680 - Venice: Giovanni Pare', c. 1680. 52 x 52mm. Trimmed from a large broadsheet. Very fine condition. Don Casimir Freschot, a Benedictine Priest and author of about 50 books on history and Venice, composed a 'goose game', 'Geografia ridotta a giuoco per istruttione della giovane nobiltà veneziana', to facilitate 'the teaching of geography to the young Venetian nobility', of which this map was a section. Engraved by Anton Francesco Lucini, this was probably the earliest geographical game to be published. The 'board' comprised 153 squares containing small maps, arranged in a spiral, with a plan of Venice at the centre. Above the game were four larger maps of the continents, the rules, including the prizes and forfeits for landing on squares, and a dedication. There is only one known complete example, in the Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana in Venice. Even incomplete examples are extremely rare. "Charta Geographica" magazine, vol.1, page 76; plus insert with facsimile broadsheet.

Tabula Indiæ Orientalis Emendata a F. de Wit

Amsterdam: c, 1680. Engraved map, 460 x 560 mm., superb handcolouring; in fine condition, framed. Tasman map by Blaeu's apprentice. Fine early map of the East Indies showing the discoveries of Tasman by Frederick de Wit, at a time when he was one of the foremost map-makers in Holland. His firm's 'maps were distinguished by their excellent craftsmanship, exactness and beauty…' (Schilder). This map stretches from Persia in the west to China and Taiwan in the east, and shows northern "Hollandia Nova", bearing three significant place names: "Van Diemens Landt"; "Baya van Diemen" and "Vuyle hoeck" (the last a disparaging term meaning something like "rotten corner" and evidently relating to the inhospitable coastline). All of these relate to Abel Tasman's second voyage of 1644. 'Frederick de Wit, an apprentice of William Blaeu… became one of the most prominent and successful map engravers and publishers in Amsterdam following the decline of the Blaeu and Jansson establishments. His work, notable for the beauty of the engraving and colouring, was very popular and editions were issued many years after his death…' (Parry, The Cartography of the East Indian Oceans, p. 118). The map is handcoloured in outline and decorated by a beautiful cartouche showing four dramatically-posed costumed figures of the East.

THE SECOND PART OF THE COLLECTION OF LETTERS AND OTHER WRITINGS relating to the horrid Popish Plot: printed from the originals in the hands of Sir George Treby, Kt. (Recorder of the City of London) Chairman of the Committee of Secrecy of the Honourable House of Commons, published by order of that House. London: Samuel Heyrick, 1681. First edn. 34pp Wing T-2104. The Plot unfolded in a very peculiar fashion. Titus Oates and Israel Tonge had written a large manuscript that accused the Roman Catholic Church of approving an assassination of Charles II. The Jesuits in England were to carry out the task.& & The Oates and Tonge manuscript also named nearly 100 Jesuits and supporters that were supposedly involved in this assassination plot. Nothing in this document was ever proven to be true.& & Oates slipped a copy of the manuscript into the wainscot of a gallery in Sir Richard Barker's house.[5]& The following day Tonge claimed to find the manuscript, and showed it to an acquaintance, Christopher Kirkby, who was shocked and decided to inform the King. Kirkby was a chemist and a former assistant in Charles's scientific experiments; he bragged about his access to the king. [6]& & On 13 August 1678, whilst Charles was out walking in St James's Park, the chemist informed him of the plot.[7] Charles was dismissive but Kirkby stated that he knew the names of assassins who planned to shoot the King in the park and, if that failed, the Queen's physician, Sir George Wakeman, would poison him. When the king demanded proof, the chemist offered to bring Tonge who knew of these matters personally. Charles told Kirkby to present Tonge before Lord Danby. Tonge then lied to Danby that he had found the manuscript but did not know the author although it was probably a man he had seen once or twice and whom he had engaged in light conversation.& & Danby advised the king to order an investigation. Charles II denied the request maintaining that the entire affair was absurd. He told Danby to keep the events secret so as not to put the idea of regicide into the people's minds.[8] However, word of the manuscript eventually spread to the Duke of York, who publicly called for an investigation into the matter.[citation needed] During the investigation, Oates' name arose.& The Popish Plot was nearly dismissed as nothing but a conspiracy theory until the murder of Sir Edmund Godfrey. Godfrey was a member of Parliament, and a strong supporter of Protestantism. His disappearance on 12 October 1678, and the finding of his body on 17 October sent the Protestant population into an uproar. He had been strangled and run through with his own sword. Many of his Protestant supporters blamed the murder on the Catholic Church. Oates seized on this murder as proof that the Plot was true, which succeeded among the public. To this day, no one is certain who killed Sir Edmund Godfrey.

The Grand Question, Concerning the Bishops Right To Vote in Parlament

1680. A Defense of the Lords Spiritual [Stillingfleet, Edward (1635-1699), Attributed]. The Grand Question, Concerning the Bishops Right To Vote in Parlament [sic] in Cases Capital, Stated and Argued, From The Parlament [sic] Rolls, and the History of Former Times. With An Enquiry into the Peerage, And the Three Estates in Parlament [sic]. London: Printed for M.P., 1680. [iv], 188 pp. Octavo (6-1/2" x 4"). Contemporary mottled calf, blind rules to boards, rebacked, raised bands, gilt ornaments and lettering piece to spine, hinges mended. Moderate rubbing to boards with wear to corners. Light toning to text. Later signatures and annotations to endleaves, interior otherwise clean. * First edition, one of two issues from 1680. On the face of it, this is a discussion of a right enjoyed by the Lords Spiritual, the bishops of the Church of England who sit in the house of Lords. More broadly, it is an argument defending their membership in Parliament that refuted contrary claims advanced in several recent pamphlets by Whig authors. At this time, the tense years leading to the Glorious Revolution, the Whigs feared the imminent ascendance of French-style royal absolutism and "popery," which would initiate a corresponding suppression of Protestantism and the rights of Englishmen. Stillingfleet, a prominent theologian and scholar, was an able and enthusiastic defender of Anglican orthodoxy. A second edition of The Grand Question was published in 1682. English Short-Title Catalogue R19869.

Ambassades mémorables de la Compagnie des Indes Orientales des Provinces Unies vers les Empereurs du Japon. [Memorable Embassies of East India Company of the United Provinces to the Emperor of Japan]

Amsterdam: Jacob de Meurs, 1680. Folio; title in black and red with engraved vignette, additional engraved title, 26 engraved maps and plates (one of the maps folding, 4 plates folding and 21 double-page), and about 70 engraved illustrations in the text, along with occasional engraved initials and head-pieces; a few plates with repairs; contemporary mottled calf, skilfully rebacked to style, spine gilt, a very good copy. One of the earliest Western books on Japan. First French Edition. A beautifully illustrated work, prepared by Montanus to mirror and complement his great work on China, this is one of the most significant of early publications on Japan. Its remarkable series of engraved illustrations 'represent a high-water mark in book illustrations of the 17th century' (Lach). The monumental work was compiled by the Dutch minister Arnold Montanus, based chiefly on reports from emissaries of the Dutch East India Company; it describes their meetings with the Japanese and with traders of other nations, especially Portugal, and gives a remarkably detailed picture of Japan and its people. The illustrations include superb town views including those of Edo (Tokyo), Osaka and the Dutch trading settlement at Deshima. Montanus' chief source was the journals from the Dutch East India Company Embassy of 1649 which had pretended to be 'an official embassy from the Dutch government rather than from the VOC', and 'the description of Henry Indyk's Embassy to Edo in March 1661, [which] is unusually rich in details' ((Lach, Asia in the Making of Europe). 'During this period of isolation (Sakoku) that began in 1635… the shogunate placed foreigners under progressively tighter restrictions. It monopolized foreign policy and expelled traders, missionaries, and foreigners with the exception of the Dutch and Chinese merchants who were restricted to the man-made island of Dejima in Nagasaki Bay and several small trading outposts outside the country…' (Wikipedia).

The work is dedicated to King George II, and in recognition of his work Chambers was elected a member of the Royal Society in 1729. The influence of Chambers encyclopaedia has been incalculable, influencing Diderot?s Encyclopedie and the Encyclopaedia Britannica. Almost every development in the world of encyclopaedia making is traceable to the pioneering example of Chamber?s work. This first edition is very rare.

Flammulae Amoris Versibus, et Iconibus Exornatae ['Sparkles of Augustine's Love' - Emblem Book]

s.n. (Antwerp / Munich), 1680. s.n. (Antwerp / Munich). LEATHER BOUND. B00KS6LJFQ 1680 second edition of this significant emblem book by Flemish priest and Latin poet Michel Hoyer (1593-1650), s.n. (Munich, Germany), 3 1/8 x 5 1/8 inches tall full blind stamped leather bound, hand lettering to spine, two functioning leather and metal clasps, all page edges green, elaborately engraved title page, 25 full-page engraved emblems, several engraved printer's devices, [4], 199, [9] pp., complete (including blank endpapers). Cracking to bottom and top of front hinge, but all holds, and the binding is quite firm. Contemporaneous ink notations, marked out, to verso of half title. 3/8-inch piece excised from bottom of title page and 1/2-inch square chip from lower tip of the next two leaves (F. Timothy Mayr's dedication) - none impacting text or illustration. Small bit of worming to two blank rear free-endpapers. Otherwise, a very good copy - unusually clean and bright, devoid of marks. A re-issue of the 1629 Antwerp first edition, using the same plates. Uncommon (the substantially different 1708 third edition is much more often seen). In this work, Hoyer, an Augustinian hermit, uses 25 magnificent emblems engraved by Guillaume Collaert, followed by his own extensive Latin poems and a brief selection of commonplaces from Augustine's works, to follow the great saint's remarkable career from sinner to saint. Drawing primarily on the 'Confessions' and a few pseudo-Augustinian texts of a similar slant, Hoyer shows us not only the authoritative Father of the Church, but also the man who struggled with worldly temptations, the adolescent who once prayed to God, 'Give me chastity and continence, but not yet.' (Confessions, 7.7) In both the emblems and Hoyer's text, the affective language of Catholic devotion is very much present: penitent tears, chaste sighs and pious desire. Composed during a tumultuous time for the Church, during the Counter-Reformation, the Flammulae was intended as both motivational - boosting the Catholic faithful, particularly Hoyer's own Augustinian order, following a time of great losses at the hands of their fellow brother Luther - and pedagogical, combining classical allusions and various metrical forms with a distinctly Augustinian morality, for the benefit of students, teachers and preachers. The first portion of the emblems deal with Augustine's long spiritual crisis. In the fifth emblem, for example, Augustine is depicted as a Roman soldier, wounded by one of Cupid's arrows. First aid is delivered by a winged physician (divine love). In emblem 8, his conversion, 'Tolle lege' ('pick up and read,' referring to scripture) comes directly from the heavens, with a Flemish monastery depicted in the background. Evidence of Hoyer's intent to strengthen the identity of his order can be seen in emblem 19, where Augustine is pictured as a Flemish hermit, with the characteristic wide-brimmed hat and black habit. . Very Good. 1680. Second Edition.
