Barcinone, ex Typis Antonii Lacavalleria, s.d. (c.1680). - Petit in-8. 48pp. Palau, 360448.

1680 - First edition of this important Spanish work on veterinary. 1680. Madrid. Juan Garcia Infanzon. 8vo. 8 ff., 199 pp., 2 ff., 47 pp. Reimbotage of early vellum boards, ties renewed, spine lettered in ink. A fine copy, lightly washed. 4,500 $ First edition; the work is added with the art of shoeing horses, by Francisco de la Reyna. The author, Portuguese-born and whom relatively little is known, divided the treatise in 42 chapters, mostly dealing with wounds of the nerves, and general diseases; it is not considered amongst the scholars who wrote on the subject, he in turn focuses experiences and practical knowledge, and home-made recipes to treat animals [cf. Braulio Antón Ramírez, Diccionario de bibliografía agronómica, pp.348]. Alvarez also focuses on the treatment on pigs. The illustration is comprised of two woodcuts in text, one the coat of arms of Juan Gaspar Enríquez de Cabrera, Almirante de Castilla. This is the first edition, however according to the title it is now “newly added” with the Reyna treatise, which in fact is added, only with a new foliation, some bibliographers explain that the title was remade to show this alteration, however the work is the same, it is not a new publication. “Todo este tratado es de terapeutica, apoyada en varias observaciones del Autor, en que acredita el uso del unguento fuerte, conocido entre los Albeytares con el nombre de untura fuerte. Con esta medicina pretende curar todas las enfermedades externas que acometen al bruto, sin exceptuar al Ganado vacuna, pues tambien trae la observaciones de un buey que tenia una fuerta contusion en una extremidad posterior Este tratado los finalize un antidotario. London: for John Wright.and Sold by Edward Milward Book-Seller in Leitchfield, Wing B4698. Rare. ESTC records copies at BL, Cambridge, Glasgow and National Library of Scotland; Folger, Huntington, Newberry, Trinity College and Yale.A re-issue was published in 1686 with a new title page cancelling A1-2 and quire *. The re-issue is also rare with only five copies recorded in ESTC. No copies recorded at auctionon Rare Book Hub since 1956 save for a defective (title-page missing and supplied in manuscript) and ?badly worn? copy at Bloomsbury in 2004. Two works bound together on the falsity of astrology published over one-hundred years apart. ?Hence proceed those swarms of Fortune-Tellers, Geomancers, Diviners and Interpreters of Dreams, who possess the common people with apprehensions, that they know all their fate, the number of their days, the casualties of their life; and even their natural inclinations, and thoughts of their hearts: by this means cheating the poor innocent souls into the grossest superstitions imaginable? (A4, Preface). An impassioned plea by John Brinley of Brockton, Staffordshire to his neighbours not to be seduced by ?such men, who practice unlawful arts? and that many illnesses and unusual occurrences can be ascribed to rational reasons. He notes that ?there is nothing.more usual with the Common people, than to ascribe to Witchcraft, all Disasters, or Diseases whatever seeming strange to vulgar sense?(p.15). He lists a number of afflictions - such as hydrophobia (after the ?biteing of a Mad-dog?) and attempts a rational explanation. Brinley also sets out this reasons for believing that witches exist and offers examples of witchcraft and sorcery in the Bible, he also includes a description of ?signs whereby one may discover whether a party be possest [possessed] or bewitched? (p.58). In the second part of this work (which begins with a separate title-page) Brinley turns his attention to the misdemeanours of astrologers, ?superstitious fopperies and almost ridiculous? (p.69) but which nevertheless serve to undermine scripture. This copy has quire *1-4 which is not present in a number of copies, it is not present in the EBBO copy online [BL copy] or, according to ESTC, in the Folger or Huntington copy. Two of the leaves in this quire in the present copy have been torn at the corners which perhaps suggests they were intended to be cancelled. The quire contains two poems: a verse address by Brinley to the ?general sort of readers? and a poem ?The Astrologers? (signed W.W) which begins with the opening five lines of Jasper Mayne's commendatory verse on his friend William Cartwright. [Bound after]: BEAUMONT (George). Fixed Stars: or, an Analyzation and Refutation of Astrology.to which is added, many anecdotes, shewing the Folly, and the Mischievous Tendency of Fortune-Seeking, Fortune-Telling, and Almanack Predictions. Second Edition. Small. 8vo. 144pp. A little cropped in places (in order to make it fit into the volume), some marking browning.

(Extremely rare. This Manifesto dated London, 3 January 1679 (p.39) and translated into Castilian by July of the same year, appeared at the height of the panic about the popish plot. Commissioned by a man of importance ("un gran sujeto"), the translation aimed to publicize the facts about the persecution of Catholics. The work provides detailed biographies of the principal inventor of the plot - Titus Oates, and of other key witnesses -- William Bedloe and his brother, Miles Prance and Stephen Dugdale. The details of the supposed conspiracy to assassinate the King are examined and the claims of the witnesses challenged. Particular attention is paid to the activities of Oates and the Bedloes in Spain, and their characters and conduct are discredited. The assertions of the Manifesto are supported by the evidence provided in five "Instruments": sworn testimonies by various Spaniards, English Merchants in Bilbao, a letter by Oates himself relating to the Bedloes and a letter of the Rector of the Irish College in Salamanca).         Pascaerte vande Caribes Eylanden van 't Eylant Granadillos, tot 't Eylant Anguilla.

[c.1680], Amsterdam, - Lesser Antilles Double-page engraved chart with fine hand-colour in part and in outline. First large-scale Dutch sea chart of the Lesser Antilles - published in Roggeveen's exceedingly rare sea pilot 'Het Brandende Veen'. Roggeveen, born in Delshaven, came to Middleburg, the seat of both the Dutch East and West India Companies, in 1658. He worked for both companies teaching the art of navigation and helped to maintain their collections of hydrographic manuscripts and charts, including Spanish portolans of the West Indies. In the mid-1660s, assisted by his access to these collections, Roggeveen embarked upon compiling a series of large-scale charts of the North American coastline, West Indies, and, later, West Africa. Many of his charts are based upon the earlier large-scale work of Hessel Gerritsz and Joan Vingboons, both cartographers for the Dutch East and West India Companies, but Roggeveen's work was the first to show the whole coastline of North America and the Caribbean. He called this pilot 'Het Brandende Veen' or 'The Burning Fen'; a pun on his name, as 'veen' means 'fen', and a heap of burning fen represents a fire on the coast to guide or warn ships. The first edition of the atlas was published in 1675 by Pieter Goos, however, due to the death of Goos in the same year, and that of Roggeveen four years later, a second edition would not be published until 1680, by which time the plates had been acquired by the chart dealer Jacobus Robijn. Robijn went on to republish the second edition in 1689, with a third edition appearing in 1698. [Attributes: First Edition]

The first large-scale Dutch sea chart of the Bahamas and Florida's east coast - published in Roggeveen's exceedingly rare sea pilot 'Het Brandende Veen'. "One of the most important of Roggeveen's charts, and the first Dutch one of the region. Through these waters passed the majority of Spain's wealth from the New World. Its publication provided a hugely increased scale on all prior documents. It depicts the east coast of Florida from st Augustine southwards, and all of the Bahamas."

Bibliografia: Koeman pp. 332/338, Cremonini pp. 83-90. Dimensioni 590 510mm

Magnae Tartariae, Magni Mogolis Imperii Iaponia et Chinae Nova Descriptio

A beautiful example of Frederick de Wit's c. 1680 map of Tartary. The map covers from just north of the Arctic Circle to Formosa south to the the Bay of Bengal and Formosa, and from the Caspian Sea to Hokkaido or Yedso. Although parts of China, Japan, and northern India were somewhat mapped, most of northeastern Asia was fully unknown to western cartographers. The continent has here been given a curious rounded form that may be suggestive of a northeasterly route to Asia. Both the Great Wall of China and the Gobi Desert are clearly delineated. At the western edge of the map the overlarge Caspain Sea is erroneously mapped on an east-west rather than north-south axis. This map was published both independently and as part of various complied and composite atlases. Copperplate, very good condition. Amsterdam Amsterdam Dimensioni in mm. 555 X 440

A Mapp of the Isles of Iapon

      A. Goodbid and J. Playford, 1680. Map. Copperplate engraving with hand-coloring. Expertly restored and lined, margins missing. Image measures 14.25 x 20.75" This rare and unusual map of Japan features a graphic illustration of the islands with pictorial depictions of mountains and forts. An inset of Tunquin (North Vietnam) depicts the river system centered on Hanoi and the Gulf on Tonkin. The Sea of Korea and the country's tip can be seen below the inset. Moses Pitt, a British bookseller and publisher, released this English edition of Tavernier's original French map in 1680. The map has been intensively repaired and has some stains, but it remains a good copy of this hard-to-find map. Jean Baptiste Tavernier (1605-1689) was a famous French traveler who voyaged most extensively in India and Persia. His two volumes of "Les Six Voyages de Jean-Baptiste Tavernier" document his travels and commercial contacts. While he never made it to Japan, this scarce map evidences the wide range of contacts he made during his voyages.

India & The East Indies "Tabula Indiæ Orientalis "

Asia: Amsterdam. Fredericum de Wit 1680?. Copper engraved map of India and South east Asia by Frederick de Wit from his " Atlas Maior". Original outline colour; verso blank. The map shows the area from Persia with the subcontinent of India extending to the East Indies with the islands of Indonesia and the Philippines, part of the coast of China, the interior obscured by the title cartouche: the Northern coast of Australia to lower right corner Good impression; light toning to extreme edges; centrefold splits top [40 mm] and bottom [130 mm] with old repair to verso; paperfault? repaired near lower centrefold; 3 short tears to lower edge, repaired with archival tape to verso; old ink numbers to verso. Frederick de Wit [1630-1706] De Wit was one of the most prominent and successful map engravers and publishers in Amsterdam in the period following the decline of the Blaeu and Jansson establishments, from which he acquired many copper plates when they were dispersed at auction. His output covered most aspects of map making: sea charts, world atlases, an atlas of the Netherlands, 'town books' covering plans of towns and cities in the Netherlands and Europe, and wall maps. His work, notable for the beauty of the engraving and colouring, was very popular and editions were issued many years after his death by Pieter Mortier and Covens and Mortier. Frederick de Wit was born Frederick Hendricksz or Frederick son of Hendrick.he moved from his home town of Gouda to Amsterdam in 1648 and by 1654 he had opened a printing office and shop under the name "De Drie Crabben" (the Three Crabs) which was also the name of his house on the Kalverstraat. In 1655, De Wit changed the name of his shop to the "Witte Pascaert" (the White Chart). Under this name De Wit and his firm became internationally known. Dating De Wit's atlases and maps is considered difficult because usually no dates were recorded on the maps and their dates of publication extended over many years Koeman III: Wit 8 /73.
