Prijs: ?2.650,-.

Excellent detail throughout and a nice title carouche.; -vita of the artist: Giacomo Cantelli da Vignola (1643 - 1695) was an important Italian cartographer and engraver Cantelli was born in Montorsello, near Vignola Italy to a prominent local family. After studying literature at the University of Bologna, Cantelli took a position as secretary to the Marquis Obizzi de Ferrara. Eventually Cantelli relocated to Venice where developed an interest in cartography. He later traveled to Paris in the company of the French ambassador where became acquainted with the French cartographer Guillaume Sanson, as well as his contemporaries Jacques-Andre Duval and Michel-Antoin Baudrand. It was most likely the influence of these innovative French cartographers that inspired Cantelli's careful and meticulous approach, in which he based his cartography not just on earlier maps, but also very much in the French style upon accounts written by travelers and merchants regarding actual travel to foreign lands. Back in Italy, Cantelli took service Count Rinieri Marescotti, with whom he traveled extensively throughout Italy, becoming in the process acquainted with the Italian publisher Giovanni Giacomo de Rossi. It is with Rossi that Cantelli began officially publishing his maps. The earliest maps to bear the Cantelli-Rossi imprint date to 1672 and detail the Holy Land, Persia, and the Ottoman Empire. Around 1680 the duo also began to publish the Mercurio Geografico, a large format atlas illustrating all parts of the world in a splendid Italian baroque detail defined by elaborate finely engraved cartouche work, high quality paper, and bold Roman lettering, and dark rich inks. Some have compared his style go that of Giovanni Antonio Magini, another Italian cartographer of the previous generation. Cantelli da Vignola in fact pioneered the Italian style of fine bold engraving that would eventually be embraced and expanded upon by Vincenzo Coronelli. His work drew the attention of Pope Innocent XI and Reggio Francesco II d'Este, the Duke of Modena, both of whom offered him a position as court geographer. Cantelli chose to work with the Due of Modena, in the service of whom he produced numerous maps and well as two large globes.

Barcinone, ex Typis Antonii Lacavalleria, s.d. (c.1680). - Petit in-8. 48pp. Palau, 360448.

De Tribus Impostoribus Magnis Liber cura editus Christiani Kortholti; S Theol. D & Professoris Primarii. (Appendix Qua Hieronymi Cardani & Edoradi Herberti de Animalitate Hominis opiniones perspicue proponuntur, ac Philosophice examinantur).

Kiloni [Kiel]: Joachim Reumann 1680 - First edition. 8vo. (156x88mm). pp. 8ll, 312. The pagination is confusing as the final gathering is numbered 287-294, following the penultimate gathering which ends with page 304. However, all the signatures are present. Text in Latin. Vellum, five raised bands, title and author in manuscript in second and third compartments and a library shelfmark in the first. All edges sprinkled red. The front endpaper has an earlier catalogue entry pasted in. There is browning and foxing to much of the text block although not affecting the legibility of the text. There is a tear to leaf 3 of the preface with slight loss of text. Otherwise, the contents are in very good condition and overall this is an excellent tight copy of the rare first edition of Kortholt's critique of philosophical materialism. Christian Kortholt was a theologian and church historian who spent most of his career at the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel, where he wrote this attack on the perceived atheism of Lord Herbert of Cherbury, Hobbes and Spinoza. Kortholt's critique was based on what he regarded as a materialist tendency in contemporary religion which rendered faith and religious observance a malleable, humanist and subjective matter, independent of notions of revelation and spirituality. This loose free-reined idea of faith was, according to Kortholt, if not quite atheism, some way along the path to it. Herbert, of course, is generally regarded as an early Deist, and so perhaps we should see Kortholt as using this critique of these three thinkers to attack the Deism which would become the prevailing intellectual movement of the European Enlightenment. In these religious culture wars, De Tribus Impostoribus was an influential and important book, running to a second edition in 1700 (published in Hamburg). The first edition is scarce, Copac locating seven copies in the UK and Worldcat a further five. It last appeared at auction in 1990. [Attributes: First Edition]

1680 - First edition of this important Spanish work on veterinary. 1680. Madrid. Juan Garcia Infanzon. 8vo. 8 ff., 199 pp., 2 ff., 47 pp. Reimbotage of early vellum boards, ties renewed, spine lettered in ink. A fine copy, lightly washed. 4,500 $ First edition; the work is added with the art of shoeing horses, by Francisco de la Reyna. The author, Portuguese-born and whom relatively little is known, divided the treatise in 42 chapters, mostly dealing with wounds of the nerves, and general diseases; it is not considered amongst the scholars who wrote on the subject, he in turn focuses experiences and practical knowledge, and home-made recipes to treat animals [cf. Braulio Antón Ramírez, Diccionario de bibliografía agronómica, pp.348]. Alvarez also focuses on the treatment on pigs. The illustration is comprised of two woodcuts in text, one the coat of arms of Juan Gaspar Enríquez de Cabrera, Almirante de Castilla. This is the first edition, however according to the title it is now “newly added” with the Reyna treatise, which in fact is added, only with a new foliation, some bibliographers explain that the title was remade to show this alteration, however the work is the same, it is not a new publication. London: for John Wright.and Sold by Edward Milward Book-Seller in Leitchfield, Wing B4698. Rare. ESTC records copies at BL, Cambridge, Glasgow and National Library of Scotland; Folger, Huntington, Newberry, Trinity College and Yale.A re-issue was published in 1686 with a new title page cancelling A1-2 and quire *. The re-issue is also rare with only five copies recorded in ESTC. No copies recorded at auctionon Rare Book Hub since 1956 save for a defective (title-page missing and supplied in manuscript) and ?badly worn? copy at Bloomsbury in 2004. Two works bound together on the falsity of astrology published over one-hundred years apart. ?Hence proceed those swarms of Fortune-Tellers, Geomancers, Diviners and Interpreters of Dreams, who possess the common people with apprehensions, that they know all their fate, the number of their days, the casualties of their life; and even their natural inclinations, and thoughts of their hearts: by this means cheating the poor innocent souls into the grossest superstitions imaginable? (A4, Preface). An impassioned plea by John Brinley of Brockton, Staffordshire to his neighbours not to be seduced by ?such men, who practice unlawful arts? and that many illnesses and unusual occurrences can be ascribed to rational reasons. He notes that ?there is nothing.more usual with the Common people, than to ascribe to Witchcraft, all Disasters, or Diseases whatever seeming strange to vulgar sense?(p.15). He lists a number of afflictions - such as hydrophobia (after the ?biteing of a Mad-dog?) and attempts a rational explanation. Brinley also sets out this reasons for believing that witches exist and offers examples of witchcraft and sorcery in the Bible, he also includes a description of ?signs whereby one may discover whether a party be possest [possessed] or bewitched? (p.58). In the second part of this work (which begins with a separate title-page) Brinley turns his attention to the misdemeanours of astrologers, ?superstitious fopperies and almost ridiculous? (p.69) but which nevertheless serve to undermine scripture. This copy has quire *1-4 which is not present in a number of copies, it is not present in the EBBO copy online [BL copy] or, according to ESTC, in the Folger or Huntington copy. Two of the leaves in this quire in the present copy have been torn at the corners which perhaps suggests they were intended to be cancelled. The quire contains two poems: a verse address by Brinley to the ?general sort of readers? and a poem ?The Astrologers? (signed W.W) which begins with the opening five lines of Jasper Mayne's commendatory verse on his friend William Cartwright. [Bound after]: BEAUMONT (George). Fixed Stars: or, an Analyzation and Refutation of Astrology.to which is added, many anecdotes, shewing the Folly, and the Mischievous Tendency of Fortune-Seeking, Fortune-Telling, and Almanack Predictions.

(Extremely rare. This Manifesto dated London, 3 January 1679 (p.39) and translated into Castilian by July of the same year, appeared at the height of the panic about the popish plot. Commissioned by a man of importance ("un gran sujeto"), the translation aimed to publicize the facts about the persecution of Catholics. The work provides detailed biographies of the principal inventor of the plot - Titus Oates, and of other key witnesses -- William Bedloe and his brother, Miles Prance and Stephen Dugdale. The details of the supposed conspiracy to assassinate the King are examined and the claims of the witnesses challenged. Particular attention is paid to the activities of Oates and the Bedloes in Spain, and their characters and conduct are discredited. The assertions of the Manifesto are supported by the evidence provided in five "Instruments": sworn testimonies by various Spaniards, English Merchants in Bilbao, a letter by Oates himself relating to the Bedloes and a letter of the Rector of the Irish College in Salamanca).
