[5] ff., ff. 1–23, [2], 25–30, plt.. 1679 Franciscan missionary Casasola here details in lively prose the celebrations held in Lima upon notification of the beatification of his fellow Franciscan Francisco Solano. The soon-to-be saint was a member of the Province of the Twelve Apostles (i.e., the Franciscan province of Peru) and was a dedicated missionary among the native populations of Peru, Paraguay, and the Argentine. Solano (1549–1610) was born in Montilla, Spain, and knew Garcilaso de la Vega, El Inca, who settled in Montilla in 1561. Solano entered the Franciscan order and modelled his life on that of St. Francis of Assisi so successfully that he was popularly known among his brethren as "Franciscus redivivus." => The utterly charming, naive engraving that graces Casasola's text depicts Solano preaching to a group of Indians while the densely busy background offers a panoramic "map" of Peru. Searches of NUC and WorldCat locate only three U.S. libraries reporting ownership — none west of Indiana. Contemporary vellum over pasteboards, all edges speckled red, lacking ties; hinges (inside) open or partially so with text block still nicely attached to vellum. Lower outside, blank corner of title-page torn with loss and replaced by a fine example of leafcasting. => A very good copy.

Book of Origins -Genealogy of Isobel Kemp Cox ? Complied by Marion Buckley Cox,branching back to a witness of the signing of the Magna Carta

Bailey's (6th Ed) Photo=Ancestral Record with Supplements.. A comprehensive genealogy of the Cox Family dating all the way back to the early 1600s with some branches of the family reaching back even further. The Cox family has a rich history where they were both apart of or witness to some of the major events in American and English History. From witnessing the signing of the Magna Carta in 1215, to being one of the first settlers of New Amsterdam (modern day New York City) and Hartford, CT. The genealogy narrative indicates family participation in the Boston Tea Party and Bacon?s Rebellion in 1679. The book itself was designed by the Rev. Frederic W Bailey, and it is his sixth edition of the Photo-Ancestral Record Book. Recorded in the book are the names, location of birth, and birth and death dates for each branch of the family tree. Where the complier of this genealogy knew; added in are burial locations, when individuals immigrated to America, including the ship they traveled on, as well as notations on where she discovered this information. Photographs, postcards, newspaper clippings, family letters, and other ephemera adorn the pages throughout this treasure. As one continues to read through this genealogy it almost seems as though there wasn?t one important event or figure in American history that was not connected to this family. Family Connections and Family Lore of Note: The Temple branch of the Cox Family Tree is said to be descent from the famous Lady Godiva and the Earls of Mercia. George Yeardley, whose ancestor witnessed the signing of the Magna Carter, was one of the first settlers in Jamestown, and three time colonial Governor of the British Colony of Virginia.  His wife, Temperance Flowerdew, was one of the witness to the Last Will and Last Testament of John Rolfe?s, husband to Pocahontas. Hamutal Hammond Welsh (1735 ? 1815) ?conceived a great dislike for her husband?, apparently tried to kill him several times, even burning down their barn at one point. Captain John Clapp, who later became the Clerk of the First Provincial Assembly in New York, is said to have barely escaped being eaten by an alligator in South Carolina. William King and his wife Dorothy came to America and settled in Salem. After converting to Quakerism, suffered persecution at the hands of the local government in the 1660s. The family ghost story of ?Aunt Swan?, Elizabeth Donnell, wife of General John Swan, who dreamt that Death himself was coming for her, and a week later mysteriously died suddenly. It is said her ghost still haunts the house she died in, and she has become known as the ?Lady in White?. Elias Nexen (1740 ? 1831) was appointed first Collector of the Port of New York under the Continental Congress. Jacob Bump served with General James Wolfe during the French and Indian War and participated in the taking of Quebec in 1759. John Donnell owned the ?Willow Brook? house for a time in Baltimore, Maryland, which housed the famed ?oval room?. This house was one of the first times, besides the White House, that an oval room was used in America. Gustav Lurman, who served in the 1st Maryland Cavalry, CSA, during the Civil War was saved by ?Aunt Charlotte?, an African American woman who hid him when he crossed the northern lines while on duty. Enos Bronson, or ?Uncle Enos? was an editor for the Federalist Gazette of the United States, and supposedly took over Benjamin Franklin?s printing press.

The Journal des sçavans, established by Denis de Sallo, was the earliest academic journal published in Europe. Its content included obituaries of famous men, church history, and legal reports. The first issue appeared as a twelve-page quarto pamphlet on Monday, 5 January 1665. The journal ceased publication in 1792, during the French Revolution, and, although it very briefly reappeared in 1797 under the updated title Journal des savants, it did not re-commence regular publication until 1816. From then on, the Journal des savants was published under the patronage of the Institut de France. From 1908, it was published under the patronage of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres. It continues to be a leading academic journal in the Humanities. In the late Middle Ages scientific knowledge was a huge corpus built over centuries by the admirable effort of scholars who tried to synthesize Aristotelian philosophy with Christian tradition. In the early modern era and reaching the seventeenth century, we find a number of important names who are committed to establishing this scientific knowledge on a firmer background. Just to mention a few, we have Francis Bacon, Galileo, Descartes, Robert Boele, Spinoza, Leibniz, Newton and many others who were involved in the search for a common core of wisdom, that is, a philosophical core in which knowledge could base, which would allow them to face the philosophical tradition they received. They sought new avenues to reach the unity of knowledge under a new paradigm, which included the trial and subsequent reporting of results to colleagues, in the format of letters in the beginning and later, due to the press, it was possible to broadly widespread them. Then, in 1665, emerged in different ways, on the one side and on the other side of the English Channel, the first two "scientific publications", which preceded the current. These publications were the Journal des Sçavans and the Philosophical Transactions, later renamed to Journal des Savants and Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, respectively. On January 5, 1665 it was published in Paris the first issue of the Journal des Sçavans, under the sponsorship of private lawyer and member of the vestment Denis Sallo, Sieur de a Coudraye (pseudonym Sieur d'Hédonville) supported by Jean-Baptiste Colbert, Minister of Economy, who two years later founded the Académie Royale des Sciences (December 1666). The Journal des Sçavans proclaimed from the beginning its ambition to spread news about the books and the people of "République des lettres," which not only included scientific research as we know it, as well as intensive discussions on the Cartesian philosophy, filling all areas of thought in this century, both for and against. Descartes was the subject of scholarly talks in Paris and the provinces, and for more than 50 years there was not a single book published in France that did not have a philosophical discussion with Descartes as an object. The Journal des Sçavans imposed a new writing style and ways to disseminate scientific knowledge. [Ernesto Spinak and Abel L Packer].

Mattaeo Schultes, Augsburg 1679 - Originally printed in 1517, this work is an epic allegorical poem commissioned to celebrate the exploits and heroic feats of the Emperor Maximilian I (represented by Theuerdank) who overcomes the difficulties attending him on his journey for and with his bride Mary of Burgundy. It is assumed that Maximillian himself had a considerable share in the composition, and may have made the first drafts in 1508-08. The finishing and general editing was then undertaken by Maximilian's private secretary M. Pfuntzing. Densely worded Gothic type title page printed in red & black. Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece, and 117 finely printed large woodcuts (1 is hand-colored) by Leonhard Beck, Hans Burgkmair, Hans Schaufelein, et al., followed by 58 pages of text. Decorative initials and head/tailpieces throughout. Short folio, older vellum-backed boards (outer joint repaired, otherwise only lightly worn but with stain on rear cover). In the early modern era and reaching the seventeenth century, we find a number of important names who are committed to establishing this scientific knowledge on a firmer background.Just to mention a few, we have Francis Bacon, Galileo, Descartes, Robert Boele, Spinoza, Leibniz, Newton and many others who were involved in the search for a common core of wisdom, that is, a philosophical core in which knowledge could base, which would allow them to face the philosophical tradition they received. Brunet II,447.Scholem, Biblio. Kabbalistica 401.Caillet 4304. In - folio, pp. (12), 127, (13), bella marca tipografica, medesima legatura.

- - First French, the international language of science of the time, also first Book Edition of the first really accurate description of the red blood corpuscles, which Swammerdam had noted in 1658 ! - - "Especially skilful and indefatigable in the grinding of lenses was Antonj van Leeuwenhoek (1632-1723), chamberlain (janitor) of the Council Chamber of the Worshipful Sheriffs of Delft, Holland, and otherwise employed in a linen drapery shop. The Dutchman Jan Swammerdam (1637-1680) and the Italian Marcello Malpighi (1628-1694) are often credited with describing the red blood corpuscles before Leeuwenhoek, but Swammerdam only referred to the presence of "ruddy globules" in the blood and doubted that blood in its vessels contains such globules, while Malpighi's interest seems to have been only casual. It is Leeuwenhoek, therefore, who deserves the credit for having provided the first real description of the red blood cells. He was untutored and had had little formal education, but he was a person of infinite curiosity and patience. He examined his own blood, described the red corpuscles, and even measured their diameters, doing this with remarkable accuracy. How he accomplished this is unclear, for Leeuwenhoek kept the details of his method secret. His microscopes consisted of a minute biconvex lens mounted between two thin oblong plates of brass or other metal. To this, mechanical accessories for focusing the object to be viewed were fixed. In his first report, he described how he drew blood into a glass "pipe" (pipette) "not thicker than a man's hair" and how he attached this to the pin of his microscope with the aid of his "spittle." One marvels how he managed so successfully to display before his magnifying lens the objects he chose to study. How he illuminated them he never divulged. - - "The Blood is composed of exceeding small particles, named globules, which, in most animals are of a red color, swimming in a liquor, called by physicians, the serum. . . . These particles or globules are so minute that 100 of them, placed side by side, would not equal the diameter of a common grain of sand; consequently, a grain of sand is above a million times the size of one such globule." - Perhaps he employed some form of dark-field illumination. He did not seem to find useful the globules of molten glass which Father de la Torré presented to the Royal Society, and neither did Hewson. - - That the observations of this self-made scientist became known is a tribute to the remarkable open-mindedness of the Fellows of the Royal Society of London, to whose secretary Leeuwenhoek's friend, the physician Reinier de Graaf, submitted Leeuwenhoek's letter describing his observations. This was the first of no less than 375 communications from Leeuwenhoek which were published in the society's Transactions in the succeeding 50 years. - - Thus it was that the tiny constituents of the blood, the so-called red corpuscles (the erythrocytes), which carry oxygen about the body, were first seen; and it was with similar rudimentary equipment that the cells concerned with the defenses of the body, . , the "white" or colorless corpuscles (the leukocytes) may have been observed, perhaps first by Malpighi and by Leeuwenhoek, but certainly by William Hewson. Wintrobe, Blood, Pure and Eloquent (1980): Milestones on the Path of Progress (pp.7-11). PASTORALE

La Haye: Levyn van Dyk, 1679. n. This is an appealing French edition of Tasso's pastoral drama, in an excellent amateur binding by scholar, collector, connoisseur, and binder Fletcher W. Battershall. A lawyer by trade, Battershall (1866-1929) was the author of "Book-Binding for Bibliophiles" (1905) and several articles on bookbinding. He was perhaps a pupil of Louis Kinder, head binder at the Roycroft Shop, as Kinder dedicated his own book, "Formulas for Bookbinders," to Battershall in admiration of the latter's "love for and unceasing labors in the study of artistic bookbinding." The son of a poet manqué, Torquato Tasso (1544-95) was destined by his father for a legal career, but the publication of his epic poem "Rinaldo" when he was still a teenager won him a place at the court of Alfonso d'Este, Duke of Ferrara, by whom he was paid simply to write poetry and for whom he produced "Aminta" in 1573. The shimmering beauty of this pastoral drama marked its author as the most promising poet of the day, and the work was staged repeatedly to delighted audiences, although it did not find its way into print until 1581. It first appeared in a French prose translation just three years later, and our verse translation, accompanied by annotations and the original Italian text, was published in Paris in 1666.. 146 x 86 mm. (5 3/4 x 3 3/8"). 6 p.l., 185, [3] pp. Charming scarlet crushed morocco, gilt, by Fletcher Battershall (stamp-signed on front turn-in with his distinctive bat device), covers with delicate frame of small tools, floral cornerpieces, and large central fleuron, raised bands, spine compartments with ornament formed by leaves and berries, gilt titling, gilt-ruled turn-ins, green silk endleaves, all edges gilt, gauffered, and painted in a floral vine design. With extra engraved title page and six engraved plates by Decker, all hand colored and heightened with gold. With Italian and French text on facing pages. Front pastedown with bookplate of Fletcher and Maude Battershall. Brunet V, 674; Graesse VII, 38. A hint of rubbing to extremities, a faint dampstain to the head margin of two plates, otherwise a very fine copy, the binding lustrous and scarcely worn, and especially clean, bright, and fresh internally, with well-colored engravings.         The Unlawfulnesse of Subjects, Taking up Armes Against Their...

1679. An Artful Defense of King Charles I Diggs, Dudley [1613-1643]. The Unlawfulness of Subjects Taking up Arms Against Their Soveraigne, In What Case Soever. Together with Answers to All Objections. A Work Very Seasonable for These Times, And May Serve as a Curb to the Treasonable Practices of Jesuits and Other State-Incendiaries. London: Printed for Peter Parker, 1679. [viii], 144, 155-170, 137-168 pp. Pagination irregular. Text complete. Octavo (6-1/2" x 4-1/4"). Recent period-style three-quarter calf over marbled boards, gilt-edged raised bands and lettering piece to spine. Moderate toning to text, faint dampstaining to a few leaves. Ex-library. Small inkstamp to title page and one other leaf. A handsome copy. * Fifth and final edition. Derived in part from Bracton, Diggs's eloquent defense of the passive obedience of subjects contends that the king is under law as a moral proposition only, which precludes justified rebellion. It was originally published in 1644 as a defense of Charles II. This 1679 reissue was probably a response to the decision of Charles II to dissolve Parliament to prevent its impeachment of Lord Danby, who supervised the investigation into the "Popish Plot." Danby dismissed the plot as a fabrication, which angered Parliament. English Short-Title Catalogue R14579.

This is the first published work by Espionsa, the great Franciscan chronicler of the middle third of the 18th century. He was born in Queretaro, Mexico, in 1679, was educated there, and on 19 March 1697 began his career as a Franciscan; he took holy orders on 17 December 1703. Between 1709 and 1721 he participated in several expeditions to Texas: those of Captain Pedro de Aguirre, Domingo Ramón, Martín de Alarcón, and the Marques of San Miguel de Aguayo. While Espinosa is most famous for his writings on Texas and his fellow Texas missionary Antonio Margil de Jesus, this biography is of Fray Antonio de los Angeles Bustamante, the beloved porter of the Franciscan monastery in Queretaro. Fray Antonio was a lay cleric, a Spanish immigrant who arrived in Mexico as a boy and as an adult had a successful career in business which he abandoned to enter the monastic life. => A full biography of such an "ordinary Joe" in the 18th century is most unusual. The volume offers an => excellent copper-engraved portrait by Joaquín Sotomayor of Fray Antonio with the keys of his office and the symbols representing his responsibility of giving bread and water to those begging at the monastery door. The book is from the press of master printer Hogal, considered to be the Ibarra (or Baskerville) of Mexico. Searches of NUC and WorldCat locate fewer than a dozen copies in U.S. libraries.

Leser" wichtig. – Titel verso mit gelöschtem Bibliotheksstempel. Gestoch. Titel im Rand ansgefranst (ohne Bildverlust). Unterschiedlich gebräunt, gutes Exemplar. – VD17 3:004325S und 3:004329X; Dünnhaupt 100; Goed. Prior to becoming king, James II acted as lord high admiral from 1660-73. ODNB says, he was "no mere figurehead ... but took an active interest in naval affairs." He had a small board of seven men to assist him, Samuel Pepys served among them as clerk of the acts. James took his role so seriously that he was present on ships engaged in both the second and third Anglo-Dutch wars until being forbidden by Charles II from further endangering his life. This letter was written at the time of the Popish plot, and in order to quell any suspicion of involvement, James went abroad to Brussels and later Scotland where he was "virtual viceroy". Pepys lasting claim to fame is, of course, his diary. However, the substance of his life's work and thus the diary itself was through his work as an official in the Admiralty, not least as Secretary of the Royal Navy when he was commissioned to report on the condition of the Navy, which, after "five years of uninterruped Peace" and incompetent administration, had been reduced "to a Condition of being with difficulty kept above Water". In addition to assisting James II, Pepys had also been on a committee to run Tangiers from 1672-79. So it was only natural that the two would correspond on matters regarding it. The letter is an excellent example of his correspondence with Pepys. It reads in part, "I had recived yours in which you gave an account of the losse of the marigold prise at Tanger. I hope that we shall now sone heare of the arrival of Sr. J. Narborough for then we shall have some more strength at home, though not so much as I thinke aught to be at sea, considering the French are fitting out..." John Narborough had been stationed in the Mediterranean for the previous five years in order to combat attacks by corsairs on British shipping. At the time of writing he was in command of the Plymouth with a fleet of thirty-five vessels. He still encountered difficulties against the strength of Algerine forces. The fate of the Marigold was emblematic of Narborough's troubles. The 44 gun fourth rate ship that was captured in 1677 and then wrecked in 1679, the same year the fleet was called back to England. A fine letter involving three vital figures in the Royal Navy. Samuel Pepys, Diary and Correspondence of Samuel Pepys ... in the Reigns of Charles II and James II ... (London, 1883) vol 4, p211
