- Erste Ausgabe dieser Übersetzung (Dünnhaupt 22.1; Goedeke III269,3; Maltzahn II,954; Faber du Faur 1280a [„A very poetic, extremely artistic translation in free rhymed verse.“]). – Gebräunt, etwas stockfleckig. Marmorierte Vorsätze. Handschriftl. Notiz in frz. Sprache a.d. Vorsatz vom 11. Juli (16)94 a.d. Vorsatz.

Augsburg: Johann Ulrich Stapf, 1678. Oblong folio (245 x 320 mm). 59 unsigned etched and engraved plates:title and 58 plates numbered in the plate 1-58, by B. Kilian after T. van Thulden, most with engraved verse captions in German, most platemarks 193/198 x 240/250 mm., plates 7 and 20 smaller, plates 8 and 24 larger with fore-edge folded. Title-leaf foxed and with large repaired tear, marginal dampstaining to first and last few leaves, occasional light marginal foxing. Later boards covered in 18th-century Dutch-gilt paper with birds and blossoms (spine abraded, paper of front cover and part of lower cover faded). Unidentified 19th-century ms. shelfmark on title.*** Only Edition of the first German version of an engraved picture-book of the Odyssey, reproducing the fresco suite of the Galerie d'Ulysse of Fontainebleau, painted in the mid-sixteenth century by Nicolò dell'Abate after Primaticcio, and later destroyed. These mannerist frescoes made the rounds of Europe via several print series, including the present very rare edition, apparently the earliest in the German-speaking lands. The 60 frescoes, considered Primaticcio's "crowning achievement," were painted by Nicolo dell'Abate after Primaticcio's designs and under his direction, from about 1541 to 1600. "Tragically, the entire gallery was destroyed in 1739 after years of neglect and decay. Preparatory drawings by Primaticcio, along with drawings and engravings [such as these] provide a good indication of the decorations' original appearance" (Fiorenza, 799-800). The Dutch painter and engraver Theodor van Thulden, a student of Rubens, drew pen-and-ink copies of the frescoes during a stay in Paris in the 1630s, and had the drawings engraved and published by Pierre Mariette in 1632 or 1633. The present very scarce suite by Bartholomäus Kilian II, third-generation member of the Augsburg engraving and publishing dynasty, consists of skillful reverse copies of the van Thulden engravings. Because the latter were themselves reverse images of van Thulden's drawings (a few of which are reproduced in Fiorenza's article), the present engravings, which are of equal quality to the French engravings, more accurately represent the lost frescoes. Plate 20, with a platemark which is half the size of the others, reproduces an unnumbered plate at the end of the van Thulden sequence, and plates 30 and 31 are in reverse order, but the copies are quite exact, so much so that in a moment of distraction Kilian managed to copy van Thulden's TVT monogram in one of the plates (no. 7): the signature is deleted in the plate but is still discernible. The rhyming couplets in German that serve as captions may have been the work of the publisher. Many of the etchings appear to be in an early state, before added engraving. All copies appear to be identical. These engravings convey well the epic sweep of the frescoes, filled with statuesque and muscular human and divine (and canine) bodies. Among the more touching engravings are those of Ulysses finding his old father (pl. 53), and of Ulysses and Penelope reunited, including a scene showing them talking in bed (plate 48), from Book 23 of the Odyssey. A painting of the latter scene by Primaticcio is in the Toledo Museum of Art (Fiorenza, passim). Later generations considered this series important, and it is an early example of the Augsburg production of picture series, many based on classical literature (cf. Appuhn-Radtke, p. 775*). A later copy of the cycle, with reduced and slightly modified copies of the engravings by Melchior Küsel, was published in 1681 and again in 1705. The work is surprisingly rare. OCLC locates six copies. I locate only two copies in US libraries (Duke and Univ. of Chicago). There are only a handful of copies of the related editions: of the van Thulden / Mariette editions OCLC locates copies at McGill, Carleton, Ontario, and Stanford (1633 edition) and Yale (1640 edition). Of the later Küsel suite there are copies of the 1681 edition at Harvard and Princeton, and of the 1705 edition at Yale, Chicago Public Library, and U. Illinois. Hollstein German XVI, p. 201, nos. 560-618. Augsburger Barock, no. 614.: Thieme-Becker 1:9-10 (dell' Abate); 20:288-89 (Kilian); 27:402-03 (Primaticcio); 33:110-11 (van Thulden). Not in VD-17. Cf. Sibylle Appuhn-Radtke, "Augsburger Buchillustration im 17. Jahrhundert," Augsburger Buchdruck und Verlagswesen Von den Anfangen bis zur Gegegenwart, ed. Helmut Gier & Johannes Janota (Wiesbaden 1997), 768-775; Giancarlo Fiorenza, "Penelope's Web: Francesco Primaticcio's Epic Revision at Fontainebleau," Renaissance Quarterly 59 (2006), no. 3:795-827.

Libellus novus politicus emblematicus civitatum pars septima . [with] . pars octava

1678 - Oblong quarto (150 x 187 mm); two parts in one volume, part sevenwithengraved title-page and 89 engraved plates (of 100 - lacking plates 45-55) and part eight with 99 engraved plates (of 100 - lacking plate 51). Contemporary vellum, manuscript spine title (a little soiled). [Nuremberg:] Paulus Furst Daniel Meissner (1585-1625) composed the Thesaurus Philo-Politicus, a famous collection of city plans and views depicting European, African and Asian towns. It was first published as Thesaurus Philo-Politicus. An expanded second edition was issued between 1624 and 1631, with this later edition published in 1678. The finely executed plans and views of the many cities, villages, castles and monasteries are a fascinating record of many European towns before the devastation wrought by the thirty Years' War. These two parts are focussed on Spain, France, Italy, Germany, Eastern Europe with African and Asian cities, including views of exotic towns such as Aden, Constantinople, Mombassa, Tunis, and Macau. Meissner brought an unusual twist to the book, introducing satirical comments to the plates, and providing an emblematic context. Praz pp. 417-420.

Warmholtz Bibliotheca historica Sueo-Gothica 705, noten. Warmholtz skriver om denna upplaga: "Initial-bokstäfverne utmärka såsom öfversättare, Le Pere Augustin Lubin, fastän den bekante Pierre Richelet, i början därvid lagt handen [...]. At denna uplaga icke är allmän, intygar Niceron [...].

He died, however, leaving it still in manuscript, and in three forms; the first and longest is now partially preserved in the British Museum; the second, "a digest of the first," was published with a "Life" by Thomas Thomson by the Wodrow Society in eight volumes, Edinburgh, 1842-49; the third, another abridgment, was published in 1678 with the title "The True History of the Church of Scotland. These histories have slight literary merit, but are invaluable as sources, their material having been collected with diligence and fidelity." (Schaff-Herzog).       Nuremberg 1678 - Engraved map with fine original outline hand-colour, backed with early marbled paper to make a playing card. Dimensions: 125 × 65 mm. Hoffman published two sets of playing cards, one of the world, the other of Europe. That of the world survives in just two known examples. The present example is from the Europe pack which was entitled 'Europeisch-Geographisches Spiel-Charte'. It is extremely rare. The world map in the set bears the imprints of 'J.H. Seyfrid, delineavit' and 'Wilhelm Pfann. sculpsit', probably those responsible for all the cards. The date 1678 comes from the accompanying text volume which resides in the Willshire Collection at the British Museum. Hoffman was born in Frankenberg, Saxony, 17 March 1629. He was often in trouble with the authorities in Nuremberg for various illegal activities including plagiarism. He died 27 March 1698. Provenance: this example is ex Rimington-Wilson Collection sold at Christies November 1971 lot 295 to Sylvia Mann. References: S. Mann & D.       Vigevano (Italy), En la Emprenta Obispal por Camillo Corrado, 1678. First printing of the most ambitious Spanish architectural treatise to date, a provocative work in which the author argues the superiority of "oblique" architecture to "straight" (Vitruvian) architecture, and famously censures Bernini's designs for the colonnade around St. Peter's Square, staircase in the Vatican, and equestrian statue of the Emperor Constantine. The book is the earliest of eight publications issued under the imprint "En la Emprenta Obispal por Camillo Corrado" (Typis Episcopalibus apud Camillum Conradam) at the Italian town of Vigevano, where Caramuel was bishop from 1673 until the end of his life. It is notably difficult to obtain "complete" and in good condition, and its absence from collections of architectural books developed over many years, such as the RIBA/British Architectural Library, Fowler Collection of Early Architectural Books at Johns Hopkins University Library, and Canadian Centre for Architecture, is telling evidence of the difficulty of procuring a copy. [img-2586-left-large_default] Fig. 1: A Solomonic (Tyrian) column, one of Caramuel's additions to the classical column orders. Anonymous engraving (reduced from 285 × 150 mm, platemark) First printing of the most ambitious Spanish architectural treatise to date, a provocative work in which the author argues the superiority of 'oblique' architecture to 'straight' (Vitruvian) architecture, and famously censures Bernini's designs for the colonnade around St. Peter's Square and staircase (Scala Regia) in the Vatican, and equestrian statue of the Emperor Constantine (the later spoilt, Caramuel argued, by the height at which it was placed). Caramuel's obsession with geometry and optical distortion was treated as madness by some contemporaries; others, such as the architect and theoretician Guarino Guarini, 'who carried on with Caramuel intensive discussions as he did with no other theorist', 1 took him very seriously. Intended for Spanish readers, the treatise had greatest impact in Catalonia and in the New World, where Caramuel's ideas were spread by theologians and mathematicians, and examples of 'architectura obliqua' are numerous. 2 [img-2587-left-large_default] Fig. 2: Anonymous engraving (reduced from 180 × 285 mm, platemark) [img-2589-left-large_default] Fig. 3: 'Oblique' designs of banisters and the sides of staircases. Anonymous engraving (reduced from 180 × 260 mm, platemark) [img-2588-left-large_default] Fig. 4: Explication of the laws of 'architectura obliqua'. Anonymous engraving (reduced from 150 × 200 mm, platemark) The astonishing range and sheer volume of Caramuel's writings (he is author of at least seventy published works) together with the fact that the only constructions he completed were the square and façade of the cathedral at Vigevano, have impeded recognition of the originality of his theoretical contribution to architecture. 3 According to the author's own account, he mastered architectural techniques with Cistercian monks as a young novice at the Monasterio de la Santa Espina (Valladolid), began writing this treatise in 1624, and in 1635 commenced production of the 161 copper matrices eventually used for its illustration. 4 The book is the first of eight issued under the imprint 'En la Emprenta Obispal por Camillo Corrado' (or 'Typis Episcopalibus apud Camillum Conradam') at the Italian town of Vigevano, where Caramuel was bishop from 1673 until the end of his life. In his previous diocese (Campagna and Satriano), Caramuel had also instituted a private press, operated by Sebastiano Alecci under the imprint 'Ex typographia episcopali Satrianensi' (or version thereof). Corrado and Alecci were in no sense diocesan printers; both worked exclusively for Caramuel, and their publications are truly private-press books. Like many such books, they were not widely distributed, and today are of notable rarity. The long-gestated Architectura civil recta, y obliqua begins with a 'Tratado proemial' on the Temple of Jerusalem as an example of 'oblique' architecture. Elsewhere, Caramuel digresses into a history of world architecture encompassing the pyramids, the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, and indigenous architecture from the New World (including Hochelaga, an Iroquoian fortified village on the site of pre sent-day Montréal, Quebec), and concludes that the first architects ('Los primeros Maestros de obras') built oblique architecture exclusively. 5 He pronounces Juan de Herrera's Escorial the supreme modern embodiment of oblique architecture, 6 the indisputable peak of architectural wisdom, and eighth 'wonder' of the modern world (in the 1681 Latin edition, aimed at an international audience, this hispanophilism was toned down markedly). 7 The character of the architect and all the knowledge he must possess in order to design a building, particularly mathematics (including the application of logarithms in architecture, comparing Napier's, Brigg's, and the author's own systems), 8 is set forth in Books i-iv ; in Book v, 'architectura recta', or architecture built according to the authority of the learned, is introduced; and finally, in Book vi, commences the important part of the work, the discussion of 'architectura obliqua', or architecture according to what is dictated by (mathematical) reason, regardless of convention, in which Caramuel challenges the authority of the ancients and critiques modern architects. [img-2590-left-large_default] Fig. 5: Determining the optical distortions of sculptures using variable quadrants. Anonymous engraving (reduced from 275 × 185 mm, platemark) [img-2592-left-large_default] Fig. 6: Anonymous engraving (reduced from 270 × 185 mm, platemark) [img-2591-left-large_default] Fig. 7: Optical distortion resulting from Fernando de Valenzuela's placement of an equestrian statue of Felipe iv - originally planned for a garden - on top of the main façade of Madrid Alcazar. Engraving by Simone Durello (reduced from 283 × 175 mm, platemark) Book vii is devoted to painting, sculpture, physiognomy, perspective, fortification, and music (the last recommended to students of architecture, but not one of the sciences 'precisamente necessarias'); Book viii to 'architectura practica', with further discussion of buildings in Rome; and the concluding and hastily-redacted Book ix provides glosses and commentaries to the plates. The illustrations are grouped together and organised in four parts: eight plates show the Temple of Jerusalem (Villalpando's model is rejected in favour of the asymmetrical reconstruction of Jacob Juda León); forty-nine plates accompany the discussion of the sciences useful to architects; fifty-nine plates illustrate either 'architectura recta' or Caramuel's improvements (he presents eleven different orders of columns); 9 and forty-one plates explicate the laws of 'architectura obliqua', including a series showing how to determine the optical distortions of sculptures (a reclining figure and a sphinx) (see Fig. 5) and two plates censuring Fernando de Valenzuela's placement (1676-1677) of Philip iv's equestrian statue by Pietro Tacca - originally planned for a garden - on top of the main façade of Madrid Alcazar (see Figs. 6-7). The majority of the engravings are by anonymous printmakers: one print is signed by the Roman engraver Bernard Balliu (part 4, pl.6), five by the Milanese engraver Giovanni Francesco Bugatti (fl. 1670-1695), 10 seven by Cesare Laurentio (fl. 1657-1689), 11 and eleven by the Milanese printmaker Simone Durello (1641-1719). 12 With the exception of a few plates of architectural inscriptions, the forty-nine plates illustrating part 2 are re-struck from matrices used for Caramuel's Mathesis biceps, vetus, et nova, printed at Campagna 'in Officina Episcopali', in two volumes, 1667-1670; woodcut initials and ornaments made for that book are also reused. The four engraved part-titles organising the plates are struck from a single matrice, also used for the Mathesis nova, here adapted by deleting the original title, imprint and dedicatee's insignia, and substituting Corradi's imprint, Caramuel's own heraldic insignia, adding the title (now by letterpress), and altering the date. Variations between copies signify different issues within the edition. An engraved vignette (platemark 132 × 184 mm) displaying the heraldic insignia of the dedicatee, the Spanish illegitimate prince Don Juan José de Austria, occurs on the verso of the title-page (part 1) in our copy (and also the British Library copy); in all other copies we have examined, the page is blank. It seems that only copies without the vignette contain a portrait of Caramuel by Bugatti, dated 1679, among the preliminaries of part 1; this portrait must have been a late addition, and the copies containing it therefore represent a subsequent issue of the edition. 13 The date of first issue is uncertain: it could be 1678, which is the date printed on the title and sub-titles; or 1679; or even later, since a list of the author's 'Libros impressos' (printed among the preliminaries of part 1, folio A2 verso) includes two works published in the later year (nos.38/39 and 40/42, 'imprime este mismo año de 1679 en la Ciudad de Vegeven'). 14 Two other plates can occur among the preliminaries in part 1: an engraved frontispiece, representing a simplified version of Bernini's 'Baldacchino' of St. Peter's in Rome, lettered Templvm Salomonis rectam et obliqvam architectvram exhibens Inventore et Auctore D. Ioanne Caramuel An.m.dc.lxxviii ; and a portrait of the dedicatee, Don Juan José de Austria (d. 17 September 1679). Neither plate was ever present in our copy, nor apparently in the British Library copy (rebound in recent years); however, until additional copies have been examined, it is impossible to say whether the absence of these two plates should be regarded as an imperfection or as an issue point. Although not truly rare - we locate twenty-four substantially complete copies worldwide, the majority held in libraries in Spain and Italy - this book is famously difficult to obtain 'complete' and in good condition, and its absence from collections of architectural books developed over many years, such as the riba /British Architectural Library, Fowler Collection of Early Architectural Books at Johns Hopkins University Library, and Canadian Centre for Architecture, is telling evidence of the difficulty of procuring a copy. 15 To our knowledge, only one other copy has appeared in auction sale rooms in the last seventy years. 16 The copies known to the writer are these: presumed early issue (without frontispiece, with engraved vignette on verso of title-page, without portraits ● the copy here offered for sale ● London, British Library, 559 *f 9 presumed intermediate issue (with frontispiece, without vignette on verso of title, with portrait of Don Juan, without portrait of Caramuel) ● Cambridge, ma, Harvard University, Houghton Library, Typ 625.78.260 F ● Cambridge, ma, Harvard University, Houghton Library, FA 1545.215 F* ● London, National Art Library at the Victoria & Albert Museum, 31 G. 1-3 ● Los Angeles, Getty Research Institute, Muzio Collection, 93-B6775 ● Madrid, Museo Nacional del Prado, Biblioteca, Mad. 252-254 17 ● New York, Columbia University, Avery Architectural Library, AA 2515 C17 presumed late issue (with frontispiece, without vignette on verso of title, with portrait of Don Juan and portrait of Caramuel) ● Sotheby's, 'Livres et manuscrits, incluant les archives K éditeur', Paris, 9 June 2004, lot 9 ● unspecified copy utilised for facsimile edition (Madrid: Ediciones Turner, [1984]) undetermined issue ● Albany, New York State Library, 720 fC259 ● Berlin, Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin - Preußischer Kulturbesitz, 2° Ny 4642 ● Castell de Sant Miquel d'Escornalbou (formerly) 18 ● Córdoba, Bibliotheca Diocesana Cordubensis, Est 305.092 ● Dresden, Sächsische Landesbibliothek - Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek, Ant. The standard presentations of Caramuel as an architectural dilettante (espoused by Hanno-Walter Kruft and Werner Oechslin, especially), as seduced by fanciful optical distortions (Kruft and Oeschlin again), and as the antagonist of Bernini (Bruno Zevi), are revised in two recent publications by Jorge Fernández-Santos Ortiz-Iribas: 'The elusive role of perfection in architecture: Caramuel's Raptus Geometricus reconsidered' in Ad limina ii : incontro di studio tra i dottorandi e i giovani studiosi di Roma, Istituto Svizzero di Roma, Villa Maraini, febbraio-aprile 2003, edited by Renate Burri (Alessandria 2004), pp.363-385; and 'Classicism Hispanico more: Juan De Caramuel's presence in Alexandrine Rome and its impact on his architectural theory' in Annali di architettura 17 (2005), pp.137-165.

Paris: Guillaume Desprez, 1678. [58], 357, [19] pp. [Bound with:] FILLEAU DE LA CHAISE. Paris: Desprez, 1672. [6], 214, [2] pp. [Bound with:] [PASCAL, Blaise]. Bound in fine contemporary red morocco by, or in style of, Augustin Du Seuil with boards, board edges and spine ruled and decorated in gilt, spine with 5 raised bands, gilt-lettered in first compartent, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers (little rubbing to extremities). Text ruled in red throughout, very minor occasional spotting, else generally crisp and clean. Provenance: Marcel de Merre (bookplate to first flyleaf). An outstanding, wide-margined and completely untouched copy. ---- EXCEPTIONALLY RARE SECOND EDITION OF PASCAL'S PENSÉES, IN PART ORIGINAL, AND PROBABLY THE FINEST COPY KNOWN, RULED IN RED AND IN A FINE CONTEMPORARY BINDING. In fact, this copy in terms of binding in the style of Augustin Du Seuil and red ruling throughout is very similar to the Garden Ltd. copy of the first edition sold at Sotheby's London in 2001 (GBP 135,250, lot 117). Wheras the first edition is rather common on the market, the second edition is quite rare with only three copies recorded at auction in the past 50 years, including our copy sold at Sotheby's Paris in 2007 for EUR 19,800. Pascal's Pensées, originally published posthumously in 1670, is the greatest work of one of the outstanding French thinkers of the seventeenth century. Despite being composed largely of notes and fragments jotted down 'a mesure qu'el les lui venoient dans l'esprit' in preparation for a treatise which he did not live to complete, it is a major exercise in Christian apologetics. "They are certainly not a mere defense of [Christian] orthodoxy, nor an appeal to faith from one whose scientific attainments had brought with them a fear of scepticism; even less are they concealed free-thinking . It is impossible to elevate the disconnected reflexions of the Pensées into a system, or a complete answer to other systems. The reader will find questions asked and unanswered which take him far beyond the age-old controversy between faith and religion, and an equally penetrating light cast on some relatively minor problem. Pascal's work has, in fact, the marks of genius, exploring and stating all that can be said on both sides of the question it investigates. Since these are notes, and unfinished, conclusions are not always reached. . It is, however, a book for which the enquiring mind has had solid reason to be grateful from its first imperfect publication to the present day" [PMM]. Lower outer corner of folio Aa4 torn away (loss of four letters on p.384), otherwise in fine state of preservation (other copies examined are printed on inferior paper now heavily browned). binding eighteenth-century English calf, gilt frame on covers, back decorated in gilt. A collected edition of Juan de Arfe's highly influential writings on the assaying of metals. The son and grandson of celebrated workers in precious metals, the author spent most of his early life in Valladolid, publishing there in 1572 for the use of artists engaged in similar work, his first book, the Quilatador, three chapters on methods of assaying, purifying, and alloying silver and gold; the correct use of the touchstone and alloy points, and the marks used to signify purity; and the weighing, sizing, and valuing of precious gems, including the 'square of the weight' rule for pricing diamonds. 1 He writes of Peruvian and Brazilian emeralds, mentions amethysts imported from the West Indies, and the pearl-fisheries of Panama, Cuba, and Cabo de Vela. 2 [img-2585-left-large_default] Precision balance for the weighing of precious metals and stones (page height 200 mm) At the time there were no standard methods of determining the presence of a metal in a mineral, or - of greater concern - the proportion of silver or gold in currency, and as a result fraud was rampant. Lawsuits pertaining to the fineness of practically all the coins struck at the Spanish mints were common. In a thoroughly revised edition of the Quilatador published at Madrid in 1598 (four chapters on problems of assaying, supplemented by a fifth on the valuation of precious stones), Juan de Arfe discusses certain of these lawsuits (1585-1586), which had resulted in a massive trial against the merchants and the assayers, and the subsequent passing in 1588 of new and definitive legislation. Excerpts from the new laws are printed, including one concerning fraudulent gems. 3 The present edition joins the three chapters of the Valladolid 1572 edition and five chapters of the Madrid 1598 edition, providing a complete anthology of Juan de Arfe's writings on assaying. Its first three chapters reprint the three chapters of the 1572 edition, with woodcut illustrations of precision balances, smelting furnaces, and other laboratory apparatus, faceted gems, and a diameter gauge for pricing pearls, all taken from the original blocks, except for those on four pages (pp.29-31, 36) which were recut. Then follow the five chapters of the 1598 edition, with the woodcut depicting Iuan de Arphe ae 50 taken from the original block. The new edition is dedicated to Don Pedro de Pomar by its publisher, Doña Maria del Ribero, widow of Bernardo de Sierra, who in 1675 had reprinted Juan de Arfe's De vera conmensuraci ó n para la escultura, y arquitectura (first edition 1585-1587), an equally influential work, on the elements of geometry and the anatomical proportions needed by an artist. Like its predecessors, the 1678 edition is rare outside Spain, and is seldom found in good state of preservation. 4 Six copies are listed in the Spanish census of seventeenth-century books 5 and another eight are located by the online Catálogo Colectivo del Patrimonio Bibliográfico (ccpb) and Catálogo Colectivo de la Red de Bibliotecas Universitarias Españolas (rebiun). 6 We trace two copies in France (Bibliothèque Nationale de France; Conservatoire national des arts et metiers, Paris), one in Germany (Kunstbibliothek of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin), three in the United Kingdom (British Library, Wellcome Medical Library, Imperial College), and four in North America (New York Public Library, Smithsonian Institution, Burndy Library in the Huntington Library, Washington State University). references Antonio Palau, Manual del librero hispano-americano (Barcelona 1948), no. 16054 bis; El Libro de arte en España, catalogue of an exhibition held in the Hospital Real de Granada, xxiii Congreso Internacional de Historia del Art, 3-8 September 1973 ([Granada] [1975?]), p.64 no. 93; Christian E.
