Giving An Account of the State of those Countries. Together with a New Relation of the Present Grand Seignor's Seraglio, By the Same Author. To which is added A Description of all the Kingdoms which Encompass the Euxine and Caspian Seas. By an English Traveller, never before Printed

London : Printed for R.[obert] L.[ittlbury] and M.[oses] P.[itt] and are to be sold by John Starkey and Moses Pitt, 1678 A fair copy of the 1st English translation of Tavernier's Six Voyages, with 22 (of 24) plates and numerous illustrations in the text. Classed as 'fair' because of the missing plates and the binding, which is full leather and requires repair, including some restitching and paper repair to initial leaves. John Baptiste Tavernier (1605-1689) was a gem merchant and traveled widely, making 6 voyages to Persia and to India between 1630 and 1668. He is known for his discovery of the Tavernier Blue Diamond. He was a keen observer and his account of his travels was very popular - first published in French and then translated into English, German, Dutch and Italian. This copy has a full leather binding - the boards are held by the stitching, but the joints are broken and the leather is worn to edges, with loss of leather to the top of the front board near the hinge. Internally there is a heraldic bookplate with text stating that it was bequeathed to the Free Grammar School, Birmingham, by James Woolley Esq. of Summerfield House in 1835. There is a small ink note to the fep to state that the book was rebound (?late 1700's) at a cost of 3/6d. The fep and initial blank are detached. Contents: dedications 4 pp; contents listing 8 pp; 'The Design of the Author' with directions to the binder 7 pp; list of computations 1 p; Book I Persian Travels pp 1-258 with 8 plates; Index pp 259-264; Title page Book II Indian travels 1678; text pp 1-208 with 14 plates - one folding - and numerous text illustrations; index pp 209-14; blank; title page 'A New Relation ...'1677; author's design 2pp; table 2pp; text 1-97 finis;; blank; title page 'A Short Description' 1677; publisher to the reader 6pp; letter p 107-119; listing of books sold by Moses Pitt 3pp. Lacks final blank and rear end paper. The text pages and plates are generally very clean and in very good condition; some pages have more brown toning and there is occasional light foxing. A word is crossed out on p 22 and there is ink marking at the bottom of p 202; the plate at page 10 in book II is partly attached to the following text page in the gutter - no text/image affected; the folding plate is partly detached and the corner of the plate at p149 has lost a bottom corner - image not affected. There are a number of mispaginations in Book I: 204 as 198; 209 as 199.

Novissima et accuratior tabella magni ducatus Hetruriae.

Artist: Seutter Matthias (- 1757) Augsburg; Issued in: Augsburg; date: c 1730 1678 - Artist: Seutter, Matthias (1678- 1757) Augsburg; Issued in: Augsburg; date: c. 1730; - Condition: Very good; Map shows the Toskana and the island of Elba.MatthŠus Seutter was born in 1685, the son of a goldsmith in Augsburg. In 1697, Seutter began his studies in Nuremberg and subsequently worked in the publishing house of Jeremias Wolff in Augsburg. In 1710, he established his own publishing house and print shop. The Seutter publishing house produced a great number of maps, atlases, and globes. However, very few original maps were printed there, as Augsburg at that time had no university and no connection to the fields of mathematics or the natural sciences. Seutter therefore copied the work of other cartographers, making his own engravings based on their models. Over 500 maps were produced in his studio. Seutter's most well-known works are the 1725 Geographical Atlas or an Accurate Depiction of the Whole World (Atlas Geographicus oder Accurate Vorstellung der ganzen Welt) with 46 maps, the 1734 Large Atlas (Grosser Atlas) with 131 maps, and the 1744 pocket atlas Small Atlas (Atlas minor) with 64 maps. MatthŠus Seutter died in 1757. Seutter's son Albrecht Karl, his son-in-law Conrad Tobias Lotter, and his business partner Johann Michael Probst ran the printing business for five more years.

Intressant proveniens. Karlshamn grundades av Karl X Gustav men fick stadsrättigheter först 1664 och sitt namn först 1668. Niclas Petrus Lindahl bör ha hört till första generationens Karlshamnsbor

NOUVELLES DE L'AMERIQUE, OU LE MERCURE AMERIQUAIN. OU SONT CONTENÜES TROIS HISTORIES VERITABLES ARRIVÉES DE NOSTRE TEMPS

Cologne [actually Amsterdam], 1678. [bound with:] de la Roche-Guilhen, Anne: ALMANZAIDE NOUVELLE.... Paris: Claude Barbin [i.e. Holland], 1676. 96pp. 12mo. Contemporary plain paper boards, spine renewed to style. Light wear to extremities. Very good. Evidently the first edition of this scarce work, offering three fictional tales on the theme of buccaneering and piracy in the Americas: "Histoire de Don Diego da Rivera," "Histoire de Mont-Val," and "Le destin de l'homme, ou les aventures de Don Bartelimi de la Cueba, Portugais." Significantly, these fictional tales of piracy appear in the same year and place as the greatest classic on Caribbean pirates, Alexander Esquemeling's DE AMERICAENSCHE ZEE-ROOVERS, translated into English in 1684 as THE BUCANIERS OF AMERICA. The tales here are drawn from Esquemeling and illustrate the endless appeal of piracy tales. Bound in after is an early edition (1676) of the novel, ALMANZAIDE..., first printed in 1674. Set in Morocco, this was the first of approximately twenty popular romances produced by female novelist Anne de la Roche- Guilhen (1644-1710). Another edition was printed in 1678 at Rouen. Perhaps the earliest pirate fiction, drawn from the first edition of the greatest classic in the genre.

Contemporary gold-tooled, tanned sheepskin. .

Landwehr, Emblem books Low Countries 759 & 760; Praz, p. 502. Second edition of volume 1 and first edition of volume 2 of a very attractive emblem book by Adriaan Spinniker (1678-1745). Together they contain 84 beautifully engraved emblems: 80 by Vincent van der Vinne (who also drew and engraved the frontispiece used for both volumes, with its title revised for the continuation) and 4 (for the Spiegel) by J.C. Philips. Isaac van der Vinne's father and nephew were both named Vincent, but the present artist-engraver was probably the nephew (1686-1742). The emblems show scenes from the Bible and are followed by brief excerpts from the relevant parts of the Bible and longer verses giving further information about it. Spinniker was a minister of the church for the Mennonite Congregation in Amsterdam. In fine condition, with only an occasional minor spot. The binding has a few scuff-marks and some cracks in the spine, but is otherwise very good..

Herman Demen, Colln 1678 - 3 copperplate engravings; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall; Colln, Herman Demen; 1678. 13 cm. Gathered in 12s. Presumably the 2nd edition, with changes made in pagination from the edition of 1675. This 1678 example paged thus, [20], 564, 93. *11, A12 - Z12, Aa6; a12 - d12. Page 564 misnumbered by the printer as 464. A slight yawn between the front endpage and the title page, combined with an apparently missing leaf in the collation of the preliminaries suggests that a frontis or added engraved title page may be missing. Otherwise complete and clean. 3 copperplate engravings are included in the pagination. Bound in stippled brown leather, appearing to be a mid to late 1700's rebinding. Leather over spine rubbed with mild nicking at spine ends and a small open tear near the tail. Spine unlettered. Speckled paint/ink decorated endsheets; all edges gilt, but dimmed. Mild worm traces to the last two leaves and pastedown. Prior ownership to bottom edge of rear endpage. Rare in institutional ownership and in the marketplace; only one 17th Century copy located In institutional hands, an example in silver binding of the 1675 edition at the Smithsonian.         An Account of the Digging Up of the Quarters of William Stayley...

1678. The Last Decapitated Head Displayed On London Bridge [Broadside]. Stayley, William. An Account of the Digging Up of the Quarters of William Stayley, Lately Executed for High Treason, For That His Relations Abused the Kings Mercy. Imprimatur Novemb 30. 1678. William Scroggs. London: Printed for Robert Pawlet at the Sign of the Bible in Chancery-Lance [sic], near Fleet-street. 1678. 11-1/2" x 16" broadside. Light toning, faint vertical and horizontal fold lines, 4-1/2" section excised from foot of left margin, old tear professionally repaired with no loss of printed surface. A well-preserved copy. * William Staley (or Stayley) was one of the victims of the Popish Plot, one of the cruelest hoaxes in British history and the inspiration for a wave of anti-Catholic violence. It was the invention of Titus Oates, an Anglican clergyman, and his friend, Dr. Israel Tonge, a cleric and passionate anti-Catholic. They pretended to have discovered a Jesuit plot to assassinate the King, massacre Protestants, and set James, Duke of York, the King's Catholic brother, on the throne. Convicted as a conspirator, Staley was executed and quartered in 1678. "Instead of his quarters being set upon the city gates the king allowed them to be delivered to his relatives. Mass was said over his remains and a 'grand' funeral was arranged from his father's house on 29 November, before his burial in St Paul's, Covent Garden. This incensed the government so much that the coroner ordered the body to be dug up and delivered to the sheriff to be set upon the city gates" [Oxford Dictionary of National Biography]. William Stayley's head has a small place in London's history; it was the last to be displayed on London Bridge. English Short-Title Catalogue R211806.

The Ornithology of Francis Willughby in three Books. Wherein All the Birds hitherto known, being reduced into a Method suitable to their Natures, are accurately described. The Descriptions illustrated by most elegant Figures, nearly resembling the live Birds . To which are added, three considerable Discourses, I. Of the Art of Fowling . II. Of the Ordering of Singing Birds. III. Of Falconry. By John Ray .

London, John Martyn for the Royal Society, 1678 - Folio (358 x 228 mm), pp [xii] 441 [6] 7, title in red and black, 2 letterpress tables between pp 54 and 55 and 172 and 173, and 80 engraved plates; several gatherings with wormholes on blank corners, no text affected, a very crisp, unpressed copy in contemporary English speckled calf, old repairs to joints on upper portion of spine. £5500First English edition of the first modern ornithology, and 'one of the most important treatises on ornithology of all time' (Wood). It was translated and adapted from the Latin text of 1676 by John Ray, who added three additional plates and the three discourses on fowling, song birds, and falconry at the end. This work, begun jointly by Willughby and Ray and completed by Ray after the former's death in 1672, revolutionised ornithological taxonomy by organising species according to their physical characteristics. 'An important feature of the book was to be the engraved figures of birds, the cost being contributed by Willughby's widow . The Ornithologia, dated on the titlepage 1676 and carrying the arms of the Royal Society, if regarded only as a piece of book production, is magnificent. With its historical importance added it becomes one of the fairest monuments that mark the progress of scientific natural history' (Keynes p 54). As Keynes notes, the Latin edition was largely the work of Ray, as Willughby had died in 1672 and had left only rough field notes towards his ornithology. Ray effectively wrote the entire work, utilising not only Willughby's material but that of himself and other naturalists, and he provided the taxonomic system. The plates, numbered I-LXXVII, are signed by F. H. van Hove (XII, XXII, XLV), W. Faithorne (XXXVIII, XLIII) and W. Sherwin (XLVIII); the others are unsigned.Provenance: purchase note on front pastedown: '1714. Pr. 0: 12:6 Auct. Fine, early, and unknown letter to his colleague Günther Christoph Schelhammer (1649-1716) in Jena, who took his doctoral degree only the previous year: "Nobilissime, excellentissime atque experientissime Domine D.!

1678 - Rome, c.1678. Coloured. 385 x 540mm. A previously unknown plate, duplicating De Rossi's map of Scandinavia after Sanson, but without De Rossi's name and address or date. This plate is 35mm shorter and 15mm narrower; however the map is on the same scale, so Finnmark runs into the printed border, whereas on the usual plate there is enough room for 'Oceano Settentrionale' to be written in the Barentz Sea. It also lacks engraver Giorgio Widman's signature.

Scritta da Francesco Redi all'Illustrissimo Signor Paolo Falconieri.

. In Firenze, Per Francesco Onofri Stampatore Granducale, 1678, 4°, 14, (2) pp., 1 Titel- und 1 Textkpferstichvignette, marmor. Kartonband d.Zt. mit einem Titelschild a.d. Deckel; feines Exemplar; beigelegt deutsche Übersetzung v. Th. Greeff.. VERY RARE, FINE COPY of the FIRST EDITION of an important and first printed study study on the history of EYEGLASSES by the indefatigable observer and investigator Francesco Redi. - Maintaining that the invention of eyeglasses was unknown to the ancient Jews, Greeks. Romans and Arabs he attributes it to a FRIAR ALESSANDRO SPINA of Pisa. - - "A first edition of the "Letter on the Invention of Spectacles", which is of extreme importance in the history of spectacles. Redi, through ignorant of the inventor of spectacles, was able to determine that Alessandro da Spina reinvented them." - "Redi quotes from a sermon which Girodano da Rivalto preached at Florence in 1305, "It is not yet 20 years since the art was discovered of making eyeglasses, which give the power to see distinctly, which is one of the best and most necessary arts that the world possesses". Redi also republished what is probably the first reference of the use of a spectacles - apassage from a manuscript dated 1289." Britsih. Optical Assoc. Libr. Cat., II (1935), p.88 - - "The Pisan origin of spectacles was first put forth by Carlo Roberto Dati (1619-76), a professor at the University of Florence, in a lecture he delivered in 1673 at the famous Accademia della Crusca. This lecture was revised subsequently and finally published posthumously, incorporating information from the Pisan Chronicle and the Annals as excerpted with deliberate inaccuracies by his good friend. Francesco Redi (1626-1697), chief physician at the court of the Grand Duke of Tuscany and a renowned scholar with "a perverse pleasure in perpetrating literary frauds.' according to Rosen. Redis private agenda included making it appear that Spina was in effect the virtual inventor or at least the second inventor since the first had refused to divulge the secret. He liked the striking similarity between Spina and Galileo, another Pisan, who had made his own telescope just from a report about such an instrument supposedly invented in Holland without having seen the instrument itself. Though Redi was born in nearby Arezzo, he had strong Florentine sympathies, which even led him to manufacture a document in order to give Florence some role at least as far as the first mention of the invention was concerned. He claimed to possess a manuscript, "Treatise on the Management of the Family", written in 1299 by a certain Sandro di Pippozzo in which the author mentioned spectacles as a new invention: "I find myself so burdened by age that I would not have the capacity to read and write without glasses, called eyeglasses, discovered most recently for the relief of the needy elderly when their sight declines". - If this quotation could be verified, it would be the earliest mention of spectacles, antedating both Giordano's sermon and the Pisan Chronicle, and even the first Venetian mention of 1300, although the Venetian source does not seem to have been known to Redi. Clearly, it was a spectacular find, had it been genuine. But the manuscript was never published or shown to scholars for examination and comment and there seems to be no trace of this Sandro. It was too good to be true; had it been otherwise, Redi would have exhibited the manuscript and used it at least as the occasion for one of his lectures. We must agree with Rosen that the manuscript was a pure invention." Vincent Ilardi, Renaissance Vision from Spectacles to Telescopes (2006), p.14-15 - - Gamba 825 "Prima e rara ed." Prandi, Redi, 19; Rosen, Invention of Eyeglasses [in Journ. Hist. Med. XI (1956)] 13 ff., 183 ff.; Greeff, Die Briefe des Francesco Redi über die Erfindung der Brillen. Z. ophth. Optik, VI/1 (1918), pp.1-11.
