Virum, Dn. D. Johan. Danielem Majorem.

Amsterdam, A. Frisius, 1674. 12mo (130 x 75mm). pp. 52, (6), with 5 (4 folded) engraved plates. Recent boards. First edition and a very scarce publication on the Albatross and one of the earliest illustrated monographs of a single bird, 'among the greatest rarities in ornithological literature' (E.P. Goldschmidt). In the name 'Diomedea' is a reference to the mythical metamorphosis of the companions of the Greek warrior Diomedes into birds. The Albatross was part of Lachmund's own natural history cabinet at Hildesheim. The work is dedicated to Johan Daniel Major, professor of anatomy at Kiel. The first plate (210 x 175 mm) shows a full depiction of the Albatross, an other plate shows its large and strong beak, while the remaining plates show anatomical details. Not in any of the major ornithological bibliographies; The British Museum Natural History catalogue lists it as 'wanting'. Eales 804, quoting an edition of 1686; Wellcome III, 426; Ripley & Scribner, 'Ornithological books in the Yale Univ. Library', 163.

Jenae, sumptibus Johannis Fritschii, 1674. 4to (198 x 150mm). pp. (8), 170, (2), title printed in red and black with a large engraving. Old half vellum. Georg Wedel (1645-1721) was professor of Medicine at Jena and was received into the Academia Naturae Curiosum, with the name Hercules I. He was first physician of the Duke of Weimar and the Duke of Saxony. "He was an excellent scholar and humanist, wrote numerous books, brought out new editions of the works of older writers, and was the author of a host of disputations, consilia, responsa, paradoxa, orationes, programmata, and epistolae, written in fine Latin" (Ferguson). The present work has a charming engraving on the title, showing an Arab in the process of preparing opium in a typical idyllic German landscape, with a river, trees and farmhouses. The work describes the pharmacological aspects of opium. His treatises on contracts, jurisprudence the common law and other subjects did much to clarify and systematize English law. Several of these were standard texts that went through several editions. Ens

First edition of this account on Madagascar, Bourbon & the Mascarenne Islands, of remarkable rarity. 1674. Paris. Claude Barbin. In 12mo (145 mm x 83 mm). 1 [blank] + 6 ff. + 234 + 5 ff. + 1 [blank]. Contemporary mottled calf, raised bands to spine, ruled and lettered in gilt, chipped at head, upper joint torn. Small hole in two leaves, minor toning, generally fine. First edition; a rare account of travel Mascarene Islands. Dubois sailed to Madagascar towards the end of a period which saw the establishment of several French settlements in the south of the island. However, ´it is not in connection with Madagascar that the exceptional interest of the Sieur Dubois´ little book is to be found. Of the great island, indeed, he saw little enough during the months when he lay prostrated and paralysed by the effects of malarial fever... it is rather in his account o the remarkable fauna of the Isle Mascarenne [Réunion], wither he was transpoter in order to regain his health, that the real value to science of his testimony is to be obtained by naturalist, desirous of investigating the geographical distribution of animals in this quarter of the world´ (The voyages made by the Sieur D. B. to the Islands Dauphine or Madagascar and Bourbon or Mascarenne in the years 1669, 70, 71 and 72, Hakluyt Society, 1891, xxii). This work is an important witness to several islands species, including the Réunion rail (also known as Dubois´s wood rail), a now-extinct flightless bird; in fact, his appears to be the only historical reference about it, so it might be possible that it became extinct in the 17th century. Physical evidence of which was discovered in 1996. Dubois also describes the Réunion Swamphen or Oiseau bleu, presumed to be an extinct species. We have been unable to trace any copy sold in the last 35 years; a copy sold in 1957 in Sotheby´s, 11 GBP.

The Temple. Sacred Poems and Private Ejaculations. By Mr. George Herbert, Late Oratour of the University of Cambridge. Together with his Life. with several Additions. Psal. 29. In his Temple doth every man speak of his honour. The Tenth Edition, with an Alphabetical Table for ready finding out the chief places.

Printed: 1674. 1597-1663 Duodecimo, 5.75 x 3.5 inches. The tenth edition. [p]6, [*]5, A-L12, K6; A-C12; A-B12, C6. This copy contains the engraved portrait of Herbert by White, and the poems entitled "The Church Porch" and "The Church" appear in this edition as full paged engravings. This copy is waterstained in the first few signatures, with the loss of some fore edge margins that have been repaired. It is bound in a fancy mid-nineteenth century of embossed calfskin in a neo-gothic blind tooled panel. The endpapers are marbled, the front board detached. The spine is handsomely tooled in blind as well, although the spine label has flaked off. This work contains 140 stanzic patterns, including the most famous shaped poem in the English language. Herbert's reputation rests on this remarkable collection of poems which mark perfectly the Metaphysical tone of his spiritual unrest which is resolved in final peace. "the Herbert we know through 'Aaron,' 'Discipline,' 'The Collar,' 'The Pulley,' and many other poems in which he strives to subdue the willful or kindle the apathetic self. His principal themes are those 'two vast, spacious things, Sinne and Love.' There is nothing soft in the poet who seeks to engrave divine love in steel; and a catalogue of gratuitous, untempered, and short-lived sweets leads up to the magnificent contrast of the disciplined soul that 'never gives.' It was a standard work for many years, and it is a useful resource today. KVK locates 10 copies of this edition, all in Europe. Joannis Kepleri aliorumque epistolae mutuae: Epistolae ad Joannem Kepplerum Mathematicum Caesareum Scriptae; insertis ad easdem Responssionibus Kepplerianis ... Opus Novum, quo recondita Kepplerianae Doctrinae Capita dilucide explicantur ... ex manusscripta editum.Frankfurt & Leipzig: 1718. First edition.

An exceptional copy, in the original publisher's interim boards, of the first printing of Kepler's scientific correspondence, edited by Michael Gottlieb Hansch, which also contains the first biography of Kepler. "The thousands of MS sheets left at Kepler's death went to his son Ludwig, who promised publication but lacked both the time and the scientific knowledge for the undertaking. After Ludwig's death the Danzig astronomer Johannes Hevelius acquired the collection and published a brief inventory in Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, 1674. In 1707 Michael Gottlieb Hansch obtained the material with the intention of publishing it, and in 1718 he produced [with the assistance of Leibniz, ref. Caspar: Kepler, p.366] 'Joannis Kepleri aliorumque epistolae mutuae', a large folio vol. containing 77 letters by Kepler and 407 to him." (D.S.B. vol. VII, p.309). Among those with whom Kepler corresponded were Tycho Brahe, Galileo, Scheiner, Bayer, Scaliger, Harriot, etc. Many of the letters are lengthy scientific treatises. The work is divided into the following parts: an introduction to the history of mathematics and astronomy leading up to Kepler's time; "the earliest presentation of Kepler's life" (Caspar: Kepler, p.13); an index to the 16th and 17th century scientists mentioned in the letters; and an extensive bibliography of Kepler's writings; and the letters. (Brewster: The Martyrs of Science, pp. 252-254:) Kepler "left behind him twenty-two volumes of manuscripts, seven of which contain his epistolary correspondence. The celebrated astronomer Hevelius, who was a contemporary of Louis Kepler, purchased all these manuscripts from Kepler's representatives. At the death of Hevelius they were bought by M. Gottlieb Hansch, a zealous mathematician, who was desirous of giving them to the world. For this purpose he issued a prospectus in 1714 for publishing them by subscription, in 22 volumes folio; but his plan having failed, he was introduced to Charles VI., who liberally obtained for him 1000 ducats to defray the expense of the publication, and an annual pension of 300 florins. With such encouragement, Hansch published in 1718, in one volume folio, the correspondaence of Kepler, entitled 'Epistolæ ad Joannem Kepplerum'. The expenses of this volume unfortunately exhausted the 1000 ducats which had been granted by the emperor, and, instead of being able to publish the rest of the MSS., Hansch was under the necessity of pledging them for 828 florins". (D.S.B. vol. VII, p.309:) "Hansch had the MSS bound in vellum in 22 vols., which he cataloged briefly in Acta eruditorum, no, 57 (1714), 242-246; in 1721 financial difficulties forced him to pawn 18 of the vols. The other four- VII, VIII, and XII, which had formed the basis for his Epistolae, and VI, which was used for De calendario Gregoriano (Frankfurt, 1726)-eventually found their way to the Osterreichische Nationalbibliothek in Vienna, where VI is codex 10704 and the three original vols. of letters have apparently been rebound into codices 10702 and 10703. Not until about 1765 were the 18 vols. rediscovered, and in 1773 Catherine II purchased them for the Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg. They are still preserved in Leningrad. Details of this odyssey are chronicled by Martha List: 'Der handschriftliche Nachlasz der Astronomen Johannes Kepler and Tycho Brach', 1961". Caspar: Bibliographia Kepleriani, 102; Honeyman 1805. Scarce.. Large folio: 402 x 270 mm. Entirely uncut in the original publisher's interim boards. Old circular woodcut stamp to the title page. Pp. [16], XXXVIII, [9], 704, [4] and 8 engraved plates. Some scattered browning throughout, offset and spotting to the plates (which is most likely usual for this work; other copies that we have been able to locate have been described as 'dampstained, soiled, spotted, and browned.' Quite scarce on the market, and even more so in such original and unrestored condition

THE GOVERNMENT OF THE TONGUE. By the Author of the Whole Duty of Man, &c. The second impression

Oxford at the Theatre in Oxford Oxford at the Theatre in Oxford, 1674. Sm. 4to., black turkey morocco tooled in gilt in an all-over design with drawer-handle tools, curls and flower head tools; decorated with silver paint. The spine is divided into six compartments by five raised bands, which are also tooled in gilt (echoing the covers), with silver paint. The title is gilt lettered in the second compartment from the top. One corner and the very head of the rear joint have been skillfully repaired. Marbled endleaves. The binding is the work of the Queen's Binder A and appears to be a twin of a copy of the same title (but the later, 1675, printing), given to the British Library as part of the Henry David gift [See: No 118]. Hobson and Nixon have had much to say about the forty years following the Restoration of King Charles II to his throne in 1660, which has been called THE GOLDEN AGE OF ENGLISH BOOKBINDING. Nixon points out that there were at least four Queen's binders; viz., A, B, C and D, who all started work in 1670, and all made use of the recently introduced drawer-handle tools and volutes with pointellé outlines rather than floral volutes much used by the other binders of the period. This is a FINE EXAMPLE on a most fitting book. Allestree was a man of extensive learning, of moderate views and a fine preacher. He was generous and charitable, of “a solid and masculine kindness,” and of a temper hot, but completely under control [Encyclopædia Britannica 11th ed.]. Collijn Sveriges bibliografi 1600-talet 457. Almqvist Johann Kankel 19.
