Entretiens sur la philosophie

S.l.: s.n., 1673. EARLY EDITION. 12mo. [2], 54, 159 pp. Bound in contemporary French calf (joints and extremities rubbed, hinges cracked and quite tender). In good antiquarian condition, completely unsophisticated. Preserved in a brown cloth protective case Early edition, printed anonymously, of this defense of Cartesian doctrine on transubstantiation and the animal-machine, written by the leading contemporary advocate and teacher of Descartes's natural philosophy. Jacques Rohault (1618-1672), a native of Amiens, was a member of libertine circles in Paris, including that of Cyrano de Bergerac; he was also a friend of Moliere. Defender of Cartesianism, a teacher of mathematics, he exerted tremendous literary and scientific influence through his "public lectures" that he gave in his home once a week. In his last years Rohault was troubled by the political reaction to Cartesianism in France. In his work, "Entretiens sur la philosophie" (first printed in 1671), Rohault tried to establish the importance of Cartesian interpretations to theology. His "Entretiens sur la philosophie" is "essentially a defense of Descartes, dealing with controversial topics such as the relation between Descartes and Aristotle, Descartes' interpretation of the Eucharist and Descartes' ideas on the animal soul." (Routledge Encyclopedia of Philosophy, p. 342). The work was published without Rohault's consent from one of the copies then circulating "in secret" -- (see Dennis Des Chene, "Cartesian Science: Regis and Rohault" in: A Companion to Early Modern Philosophy, 2008). Of the first edition of 1671, OCLC lists only four copies in the U.S. (Stanford, Univ. Illinois, Univ. Michigan, and Queens College). This is the anonymous printing of 1673, is even rarer than the first, with NO copies in the U.S., and only two copies worldwide: National Library of Sweden and the Historische Bibliothek der Stadt Rastatt. The present 1673 edition is distinguished by the inclusion of a 54-page "Discours sur les sujets traites dans les Entretiens" which is not present in the first edition. Unsigned, this contemporary discourse is a masterful exposition of Rohault's work. It has never been reprinted in any form. This is the ONLY copy of the "Entretiens" currently on the market; and ABPC lists NO copy at auction since 1978. PROVENANCE: the Sunderland copy (sale of the Bibliotheca Sunderlandiana, Puttick & Simpson, 1882, Fourth Portion, lot 10731) -- subsequently in the now-defunct Theological Institute of Connecticut (blind-stamps).

Gottfried Hautt Wwe. in Luzern zwei weitere Auflagen. In div. politischen und wirtschaftlichen Ämtern tätig (u.a. Wasserversorgung bzw. Wasserwerke Zug, Glühlampenfabrik in Zug). [1804?]". - Front. und Tafelfragment sind monogrammiert C.M., i.e. wohl Conrad Meyer (Zürich 1618- 1689 ibid.; vgl. u.a. SIKART). (Salzer/Tunk I, 3. Aufl. 1972, p. 416). (H. Thomke, in: HLS). The Elements of that Mathematical Art commonly called Algebra, expounded in Four Books

Engraved frontis. port. of the author by Faithorne & woodcut diagrams in the text. Titles printed in red & black. 6 p.l. (incl. frontis.), 323 pp.; 2 p.l., 416 pp. Two vols. in one. Thickish small folio, cont. panelled polished calf (upper joint a little cracked but very strong, ends of spine with some minor wear), spine richly gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine. London: W. Godbid for T. Passinger [Vols. I & II] & B. Hurlock [Vol. I only], 1673-74. First edition, the John Evelyn copy, of Kersey's great contribution to algebra; it was the most elaborate algebra that had appeared in England up to that date. Isaac Newton was a subscriber. "Both Wallis and Collins wrote in 1672 in the highest terms of their anticipation of this work and on its publication it became a standard authority. It was honourably mentioned in the 'Philosophical Transactions' and was commended by Hutton. Kersey's method of algebra was employed in Cocker's Arithmetic."-D.N.B. A fine and crisp copy from the library of John Evelyn, with the modern bookplate. Early signature of "E. Burt" on title and the bookplates of Sir Fred. Evelyn Bart. and Kenneth Garth Huston. Preserved in a box. ❧ Smith, History of Mathematics, I, p. 414-"Of the textbook makers of this period in the domain of elementary algebra the best known was John Kersey, a self-made teacher. He was highly esteemed in London as an instructor in mathematics and was a friend of Wingate's. His algebra [the present work] presents the subject in a logical and teachable manner. One of the most interesting features is the preliminary explanation of the analogies between proportion, which then held a high place, and the modern treatment of equations." .

All'Insegna della Stella 1673 3^edizione. Cm.20,1x14,8. Pg.(4), 36.

The Blessedness of the Righteous Opened, and Further Recommended from the Consideration of the Vanity of this Mortal Life in Two Treatises

London: Printed by A. Maxwell, for Sa. Gellibrand. 1673. First. Second edition (first published in 1668). Small octavo. 514, [12], 96pp. Probably late 18th or early 19th Century American full calf gilt. Joints a little tender but sound and tight, small strip cut from the top of the title page, presumably to remove a name, a very good copy. Ownership Signature (twice) of Rev. Frederick T. Tiffany of Cooperstown, New York, with a couple of ink notes in the text, probably in his hand. Tiffany was the Episcopalian Rector of Cooperstown, and according to some sources, the model for Rev. Mr. Grant in fellow townsman James Fenimore Cooper's novel The Pioneers, probably the reason why there exists a record of Tiffany suing Cooper for libel, although we have yet to determine how that worked out. Tiffany later became Chaplain to the U.S. House of Representatives. The author, John Howe was a Puritan cleric and chaplain to Oliver Cromwell. OCLC locates no copies of the first edition, and two physical copies of this edition (and innumerable microfilmed copies in the U.S.); Copac adds several more in the U.K. .

The Works of the Reverend and Learned Divine, Thomas Jackson, D. D., Sometime President of Corpus Christi College in Oxon : Such As Were, and Such As Never Before Were Printed: In Three Volumes: With the Authors Life,

London : Printed by Andrew Clark 1673 - 2 volumes of 3. Bound in contemporary full leather. Cambridge style tooling to front boards. Gilt lettering on orange spine label. 5 raised bands. Good binding and cover. Wear to extremities. Chipping and loss to head and tail of spine. Boards starting. Front board of Volume I detached. Library markings. Clean, unmarked pages with tanning. This is an oversized or heavy book that requires additional postage for international delivery outside of Canada and the US. Thomas Jackson (1579?1640) was an English theologian, and President of Corpus Christi College, Oxford. Originally a Calvinist, he became in later life an Arminian. His chief work was a series of commentaries on the Apostles' Creed, the first complete edition being entitled The Works of Thomas Jackson, D.D, edited by Barnabas Oley. The commentaries were originally published in 1613 to 1657, as twelve books with different titles, the first being The Eternal Truth of 1613. Jackson?s personal views were strongly against the Catholic doctrine on transubstantiation. He was an early anti-Calvinist among Oxford theologians. He made his views known only in the late 1620s, but stated that around 1605 he had already decided against predestination. In theology he was a syncretic Platonist. He took an interest in the Epicurean view of free will, but argued for a middle way accommodating the Stoic criticism of the Epicureans. His humanistic Platonism has been compared to that of Robert Burton; and William Prynne, arguing against William Laud's promotion of Jackson, claimed his learning only made him more dangerous. It includes the capture of Rio de Janeiro in 1711, with a double-page map and a view of the battle. Duguay-Trouin had begun as a privateer but in the navy he fought both privateers and the Dutch and English navies. The print series was drawn by Nicolas Ozanne, engraved by his sister Jeanne François Ozanne and published by her husband Yves Marie Le Gouaz. The maps were engraved by Drouet. Ad 2: Rare first edition of Yves Marie Le Gouaz's finely engraved series sea-battle prints from the career of the infamous French privateer, Jean-Bart (1650-1702), after drawings by Ozanne. They include a title-print showing a fishing boat before the entrance to the port at Jean-Bart's native Dunkerque, seventeen views of his conquests of Dutch, Spanish and English ships from 1675 to 1696, and a view of his Channel crossing in a small row boat after escaping from an English prison in 1689.The first work lacks the engraved half-title. otherwise both works in very good condition, with only some minor foxing, and a small waterstain in 1 letterpress leaf.

Kurt Winbergs exlibris samt J. E. Almquists namnteckning 1935. Fint exemplar. Collijn sp. 531. Engström s. 121. Almquist s. 115f. Warmholtz 6703.

The Works of Edmund Gunter: Containing the Description and Use of the Sector, Cross-staff, Bow, Quadrant, And other Instruments. With a Canon of Artificial Sines and Tangents to a Radius of 10.00000 parts, and the Logarithms from an Unite to 10000: The Uses whereof are illustrated in the Practice of Arithmetik, Geometry, Astronomy, Navigation, Dialling and Fortifications

At the Marigold in St Paul's Churchyard: A C for Francis Eglesfield, 1673 An important and rare work. Classed as 'poor' because it lacks one folding plate, a volvelle and p89-208 of the Third Book of The Cross-Staff (the book on the use of lines). The stitching up to p 91 is failing and some pages are loose up to that point. Edmund Gunter (b Hertfordshire 1581) went to Westminster School and Christ Church Oxford. He took holy orders in 1614. His particular interest however was in mathematics and he was successful in securing the first ever post of Professor of Geometry at Oxford University. However his claim to be able to locate the position of the stars enraged the patron of this new post, Sir Henry Savile, and he was dismissed. His fortunes quickly changed when he won the patronage of the Earl of Bridgewater, who helped secure him the post of Professor of Astronomy in Gresham College, London in 1619. His career now established he proceeded to a series of outstanding works on geometry , including his treatises on the Sector, Cross-staff, Bow, Quadrant and other instruments. His collected works appeared in 1624, and this book is the 5th edition published 1674 (although in practice it is believed to be the 3rd). He is credited with the invention of a number of measuring devices, including Gunter's Chain, Quadrant and Scale, and also with inventing the words cosine and cotangent to represent the inverse of sin and tangent. Of particular worth was his development of the method of triangulation, in order to locate an object using fixed positions; which was of especial value to sailors. The value of his mathematical analyses to navigation is exemplified by two section of this book entitled “A description of the Tropicks” and ”The Use of the Lines of Sines and Tangents in Navigation”. This edition is particularly sought after because of its reworking by William Leybourn, and includes a work by Samuel Foster which developed part of Gunter's work on the Sector. In full leather binding with slightly newer spine and probably original boards. The binding itself is in good condition so it is likely that when the newer spine was added, it had already lost the final parts of the work. With decorative title page; title page; dedication to the Earl of Bridgewater 2pp; Letter from William Leybourn to the Reader 5pp; Note of subjects taught by Leybourn 1pp; Advert 1pp; title to first book (with small ink signature and a further crossed out ink signature); text with numerous diagrams and a small crumpled folding plate pp1-156; title page to The Sector Altered by Samuel Foster (work first written in 1624 as an appendix to Gunter's Quadrant and then published in 1652); text pp 159-194; postscript 1pp; Title page The Cross Staff in 3 Books; book I pp 199-232; Book 2 pp 233-312; Book 3 pp 1-88 - pages 89-208 missing. Apart from the faults listed above, there is occasional staining and a little worming to the top margins at the beginning of the work.

        Treues.

1673 - Kupferstich bei Gérard Jollain, Paris nach 1673. Ca. 23 x 39 cm (Darstellung), dazu Text unten ca. 3,8 cm hoch. Ca. 23 x 39 cm (Darstellung), dazu Text unten ca. 3,8 cm hoch.

Manno, I, 1120. Cat. Vinciana, 2313. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
