      - Folio (320 x 194 mm). With engraved title and portrait frontispiece, engraved after Anselmus van Hulle by Comelius Galle the younger, 2 double-page folding plates and 20 engravings in the text (of which 9 are full-page). [8] leaves (including engraved title), 244 pp., [3] leavwes of index and errata. Printed in two columns. Contemporary vellum, gilt title on spine. Marchese di Salsa-Malaspina (ex-libris of the 18th century.); Earl of Dudley (ex-libris of the 19th century with motto: Comme je fus [As I Was]). Houzeau-Lancaster 8775; Dibner 55; Grolier/Horblit 44; Ekelöf 150; Wheeler Gift 170. First edition of one of the greatest books in the history of experimental physics. The Magdeburg engineer and politician presents in his publication both the results and interpretations of his experimental discoveries, themselves a consequence of Guericke's profound Copernican cosmological views on the nature and composition of space. There are certain moments crucial to the process of historical change, during which different paths leading to subsequent events may be taken: Guericke's Experimenta was one such moment. His work on the vacuum pump led to research in [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Pauls. 1672. 8vo., title printed within double-ruled borders, (16) + 135 + (1)pp., contemporary calf, spine gilt in compartments, some wear to extremities, short split in upper joint, but binding still sound. A good, crisp, copy with the early ownership signatures on front endpapers of 'Geo. Morgan', 'Thom. McFalcon'(?) and 'J. Laughton 1748'.> First edition. Wing V.500CA. (Previously erroneously attributed to John Eachard and then identified as Wing E.65). [bound with], An answer to two letters of T.B. By the author of The Vindication of the Clergy.> London: printed for H. Brome, at the Gun at the West end of S. Pauls Church. 1673. 8vo., (8) + 63 + (1)pp., title printed within a double-ruled border, errata corrected in ink in a contemporary hand, marginal burn-marks on a few leaves but nowhere near printed surface, but still a very good crisp copy. First edition: rare. Wing A.3457aA (previously erroneously attributed to John Bramhall, who died in 1663, and then identified as Wing B.4213). ESTC & OCLC together locate copies at a total of 6 libraries in England + 3 in US (viz. Huntington + Chicago + Beinecke) + the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek. The Preface is signed 'T.B.', the initials employed by John Eachard. However, the postscript says that the author wrote the Preface in the 'lofty and swaggering style' of T.B. and signed T.B.'s initials to it. But, whoever the author, this is a reply to two of the five letters printed at the end of Mr. Hobbs's state of nature considered> by John Eachard. The author writes with a vivacious and stinging pen, freely using both colourful metaphor and the sharpest of wit. 'Another thing I must tell you of, is, your trivial, low, and sometimes scurrilous and dirty language, as if you did not wash your hands before you went to your book. As if it were a certain sign of ingenious education, to talk of Old folks slaver ... Putting ones head in a pipkin ... Curds and apple sauce ... Broil'd herrings, or a burnt fraize ... Moral rules enough to stop a hollow tooth ... Philosophy and languages, six pence a bushel ... New oysters new ... A pot and a cake ... In spight of your teeth ... Hang your self ... Rogue ... Rascal ... Villain ... Son of a bitch ... Prate they whole gut full, &c.>'

Ashmole"From the library of Thomas Povey (1613/14-c.1705) FRS, Eminent London Colonial Merchant and Politician. Holding a high post in the Office of Plantations for Oliver Cromwell, Povey became Treasurer to the King’s brother post Restoration. He and Elias Ashmole were founder members of the Royal Society, proposing Pepys for membership in 1665."Pepys found him ‘most excellent in anything but business’ (Pepys, 6.215). He was a gentleman of fashion and a ‘nice contriver of all elegancies’ (Evelyn, 4.84). The house in Lincoln's Inn Fields was a marvel: its cabinet work, wine cellar, stables, and pictures, especially the trompe-l'Å“il perspectives, all gained universal admiration. Povey was a generous, if garrulous, host, always ready to retail the latest court gossip and to offer advice on social niceties. He was a connoisseur and collector …he perfectly conforms to the definition of the ‘virtuoso’: intensely curious, interested, as were Evelyn and Pepys, in the ‘rare’ and the ‘wonderful’, a man of taste and discrimination and possessed of the funds to indulge them." By The KING. A PROCLAMATION To Restraine the Spreadinge of False News, And Licentious talkinge of matters of state and governement

[London?], 1672. Stained, four closed tears, small hole in center & some edge rash to right side, with a loss of ~ 20 letters, though not the sense thereof. Binder's (?) stab holes at top. Scribal (?) pinhole lower left. A Good copy of this fragile survivor.. Broadsheet. Recto with mss proclamation text; verso docketed, "A true coppy of The Kings proclamation." 15-1/2" x 12-1/4" [39.3 cm x 31 cm]. Coffee houses in 17th C. Britain were a prominent location for the discussion & transmission of news, local and national, or possibly, in the view of some, even seditious utterings, including the hatching of conspiracies and/or treason. Herein, Charles takes issue with "licentious talking" "both publick and private, to censure and defame the Proceedings of State, by speaking evil of things they understand not..." "And because all bold and irreverant Speeches touching matters of this high nature are punishable ... His Majesty doth further Declare, That he will proceed with all Severity, against all manner of persons who shall use any bold or unlawful Speeches of this nature, or be present at any Coffee-house, or other publick or private meeting where such Speeches are used...." The proclamation issued in print by Bill & Barker [Wing C3581; Steele 3570], but during this era the scribal tradition was still flourishing, with separates such as this example freely circulating, often in the maligned coffee-houses [cf. Love. Culture & Commerce of Texts. Scribal Publication in Seventeenth-Century England, pp. 9-22]. The mss text duplicates that of the printed version, with the exception of the expected spelling variations, however, the printer's imprint is omitted from this mss copy. Rare in the trade.

Folio. With engraved illustration on title-page, engraved author?s portrait, 103 engraved emblems by Pierre Daret after Otto Vaenius, and an engraved folding plate. 18th-century gold-tooled tree calf.

Landwehr, Romanic emblem books, 479; Praz, pp. 402-403 & 523-524. Attractive copy of a splendidly illustrated edition combining Otto Vaenius's Quinti Horatii Flacci Emblemata and Le Roy Sieur de Gomberville's La doctrine des Moeurs, tiree de la philosophie des Stoiques... .. The emblems in the work of De Gomberville had been made by Pierre Daret after Vaenius's emblems, only enlarged and slightly improved upon after the latest fashion. The Brussels publisher had probably acquired Daret's plates, and used them again in the present edition, giving back the authorship to Vaenius, while also retaining De Gomberville's instructive comments. In this perfect combination of Vaenius' educational emblems and Gomberville's moral doctrine based on stoic philosophers and explained for the instruction of youth, the quotations from Horace made into emblems became popular again. With the bookplate of Six van Hillegom on pastedown, and bookplate of Mr. Raye De Breukelerwaert on blank flyleaf. Slightly browned with some marginal thumbing. In very good condition.

The 'Waare oeffening der Planten' describes to a large extend trees and plants of the garden. The work was expanded to a folio format adding new text and plates and appeared in Dutch 'Naaukeurige Beschryving der Aardgewassen' in 1696 and Latin 'Phytographia curiosa' 1702.

Overall in fine condition. Bookplate of Mons. Nabuco. Armorial bookplate of Joaquim de Sousa-Leão, printed in England, signed in print with tiny initials W.P.B., dated 1927. (16 ll.), 593 pp., (1 l.), 95 pp., lacking leaf Lll4, the divisional title to the "Poema". *** FIRST EDITION of this biography of the "Apostle of Brazil," an invaluable source of information for the history of Brazil and the earliest Jesuit missions there in the second half of the sixteenth century. The work has long been recognized as very rare. When the centennial of Brazilian independence was being celebrated in 1922, the President of Portugal gave a copy of this work to the President of Brazil; before he could do so, however, a special law had to be passed allowing the volume to be taken out of Portugal. In 1926, Holmes listed it among the rarest books of the Oliveira Lima collection. Borba notes that "copies complete with the portrait are very rare today." The @Catalogue of the John Carter Brown Library comments that this life does not seem to derive wholly from Beretario's 1617 Latin biography, although Backer-Sommervogel stated that all later biographies derived from that one. The second edition of the @Vida appeared only in 1943. Anchieta (1534-1597), known as the "Apostle of Brazil" or the "Thaumatourgos of the New World," was one of the most important figures in sixteenth-century Brazil. He went there in 1553 (see p. 6) and, with 13 others, founded the Jesuit school at Piratininga, later the site of São Paulo (pp. 17-54). There he taught Latin to the Indians and wrote the first grammar and vocabulary in their language, Tupi. In 1563 he and Father Manuel de Nobrega went to Iperoig to negotiate peace with the Tamoyos (pp. 73-98). "It is more than probable that this embassy was the salvation of the Portuguese colonies," writes Southey (I, 228). This biography also provides information on the Indians, on Jesuit missions, on Anchieta's disciples, on the rebellion of the Tamoyos and Tupis, on the French attack on Rio de Janeiro, and on the arrival in 1582 of a 16-vessel Spanish fleet under Diego Florez Valdes that was on its way to secure the Strait of Magellan (pp. 270-74). Pages 443-593 contain Anchieta's 5,786-verse Latin poem "De beata Virgine Dei Matre Maria." Anchieta, while negotiating with the Tamoyos at Iperoig, vowed to write a poem on the Virgin's life in order to keep himself from being tempted by Indian women. Since he had no paper or writing instruments (so the story goes), he traced the verses on the sand and memorized what he had written each day. The poem was first published in Vasconcellos' @Chronica da Companhia de Jesu do Estado do Brasil, 1663, and went through many later editions. The @Vida is beautifully printed by one of Portugal's greatest seventeenth-century typographers. This copy not only has the portrait (often lacking), but has a good impression of it - usually it is very faint. The portrait shows Anchieta surrounded by the wild animals of Brazil: jaguars, snakes, parrots, etc. The paper is thin but nearly opaque; in most copies, it is so thin as to be almost transparent. Simão de Vasconcellos (1596-1671), a native of Porto, grew up in Brazil and became a Jesuit at Bahia, where he later served as vice-rector of the Jesuit College and promoted the construction of what became the cathedral. He had great influence among his contemporaries, making enormous donations to the poor and acting as confessor to viceroys. His @Chronica da Companhia de Jesu do Estado do Brasil, Lisbon 1663, is another fundamental work on sixteenth-century Brazil, as is his @Vida do P. João de Almeida. @Provenance: Joaquim de Sousa-Leão, distinguished Brazilian historian and diplomat of Portuguese ancestry, was a significant book and art collector. He wrote on art and historical subjects, being an expert on the Flemish painter Frans Post: see @Frans Post 1612-1680, Amsterdam: A.L. Gendt & Co., 1973, and @Frans Post, São Paulo: Civilização Brasileira, 1948. *** Borba de Moraes (1983) II, 890. Mindlin, @Highlights 160. Arouca V55. Innocêncio VII, 286; XIX, 234. Autograph Letter Signed.

This celebrated English naval officer joined as a volunteer in 1672 and retired as Admiral of the Fleet in 1705, distinguishing himself with many commands in wars ranging from the Third Anglo-Dutch War in the 1670s to the War of the Spanish Succession in the early 18th century; he is often remembered for destroying the Spanish treasure fleet in the Battle of Vigo Bay in 1702 and for commanding the naval forces that captured Gibraltar in 1704. ALS, 2pp (lettersheet), 5 3/4" X 7", Canterbury, England, n.y. September 29. Addressed to "D[ea]r Madm." Near fine. Faintly age toned. Flowery words of condolence presumably to a daughter of a deceased friend, reading: "As I can never forget the obligations I hv to the Dutchess of Roxborough nor think off her without the uttmost concern so give me Leave to condole with you in the sincerest manner for the Loss off her, that was not only Valluable to her owne family butt to every one that knew her, and though her Death was what we had all reason to feare yett I must confess I had flattered my self with the thought off seeing her again she seamed so chearfull when I saw her Last, butt her Lite had always been such that I believe the thought off her Death was more Terrible to her friends then to her self. I will not trouble yr. Lady[shi]p with any more news then to beg you would not so far give way to this affliction but think if she were capable of conveying her thoughts to you she would desire you to be easy and hapy and as yr. Lady[shi]p is very young so may the remaindr. of yr. Life be as hapy as I wish it...." In a postscript he also mentions his life ("Lady Mary") and "my mother," but since his first and second wives were both named Mary this only dates this undated letter to the 1684 to 1702 period, likely the latter period. Docket on verso indicates this letter was later returned to the third Mrs. Rooke, Catherine Knatchbull, who the admiral married in 1706: "Lady Rooke / Receiv'd Oct.r ye 2d / 1718." This scarce letter is accompanied by a superb 5¼" X 7¼" stipple-point engraving of Rooke, a head-and-shoulders portrait of him later in life wearing armor, published by Edward Harding in London in 1799. Also present is a handwritten page of biographical notes about Rooke and two other 17th century English notables penned by an unknown 19th century collector.

        Leeuwekaart - Wilhelm Serlin, 1672.

Resolutionum criminalium Petri Caballi ... centuriae tres.

Venetiis : Apud Bertanos Folio extra (32 cm; 12.125"). [14], 362 [i.e. 374], [66], 269, [71], 48, [12] p.. 1672 Caballo (d. 1616) was a Florentine judge and legal writer who saw his "Resolutionum criminalium" achieve great acceptance upon publication in 1606 and as attested to by the several later editions in the 17th century. This dense work on criminal law begins with a title-page in red and black with type in a great variety of point sizes of roman and italic. The text is printed in double-column format and each "century" begins with a large woodcut headpiece and ends with a small woodcut tailpiece. This edition, "Hac quarta editione pluribus mendis expurgatae," has several very good indices of "arguments," words, and "things. Later limp, but rather stiff, vellum. Inkstains on bottom edge of closed volume; some captions a little shaved, half-title a little tattered. Remarkably solid and => clean.

Agricola (1672¿1738) was a German physician and botanist from Regensburg. He experimented with plant cuttings and grafting. He provided useful advice on propagating plants from sections of roots or branches. He discovered ways of grafting several species of fruit tree onto one, thereby producing a tree bearing different types of fruit. His book on the subject of grafting enjoyed an enthusiastic reception in the horticultural and botanical world, was promptly translated into Dutch, French and English after its appearance and served as the definitive work on fruit-tree propagation for many decades after. Die falsche Clelia, Eine Art-Lustige Frantzösisch und Comische Geschicht, Auß der Frantzösischen in die Hochteutsche Sprach übersetzet. 4 Bl., 349 S., 7 (2 w.) Bl. Mit gestoch. Titel und Holzschnitt-Titelvignette. Halblederbd d. Z. (berieben).

Frankfurt, Johann Peter Zubrodt, 1672. – Gelegentlich etwas stockfleckig. – Seit über 60 Jahren nicht im JAP. – VD17 12:653204R; Hayn/G.
