. Madrid, M. Alegre, 1670. 4to, 20 ll, 205 numbered leaves (a few inconsistent), 15 ll of tabla general (general index), and one engraved portrait of San Vicente Ferrer and 18 engravings in the text, all of the birds discussed. Limp vellum with beautifully contemporary calligraphed title on the spine. New flyleaves.* Rare first illustrated edition. An interesting mixture of fact and fancy that throws much light on popular ideas regarding the ornithology of Spain in the 17th century, in which (with some information of value) one finds the usual pious adjuncts to be expected from this author. Although Wood only quotes 17 plates, we think it should have 18 as our copy has. It deals with the Aguila (eagle), Buytre (buzzard), Ciguena (stork), Garza or Garca (heron), Cisne (swan), Fenix, Pelicano (but the illustration suggests that the writer did not know this bird), Halcon (falcon), Gavilan (harrier), Buho (owl), Grulla (crane), Papagayo (parrot), Ansaron (goose), Avestruz (ostrich), Pavo Real (peacock), Cuervo (crow), Paloma (pigeon), and the Gallo (chicken). Some marginal foxing and one right corner of the text (p. 143) with some slight loss of paper, but without touching the text itself. New flyleaves and a library stamp on the title-page. Palau 90597 mentions a first, unillustrated edition from 1668. However, we find no references to that edition elsewhere. In any case, this is the first illustated edition, with an engraved portrait of the author. The Licencia de la Orden is dated 30 de Setiembre 1669, the Aprobation Octubre 23 de 1669. Several later editions appeared. Wood, p. 339; Palau, 90597; Jerez, p. 43..

London 1670 - This is a very old book. This book was published in 1670. Most likely this is a First Edition but the actual title page is missing, but it has been supplied in manuscript. The book was rebound in the 1830's, because on the cover in Roman numerals it reads "1832". The binding is black leather with gold tooling. The gold tooling on the front and back covers are very elaborate. On the spine it has the title, below that a symbol or shield of some sort and below that is a date of the book in gold "1670". The binding is completely in tact, but has some scuffing and rubbing. For its age it is in great condition. Both boards are together and there are no tears to the pages. Two or three pages in the beginning of the book are detached. The printing of the pages, some are not straight, and some pages, the printing goes almost to the bottom of the page. There are 284 pages. The fore-edge is most likely from the 1830's. The edge is of a tavern scene with two men and a dog.!!!FREE SHIPPING!!! [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Plate 87, Veue du chateau de Seaux et du parterre qui conduit a l'Orangerie

Paris: late 18th century - This superb hand-colored engraving, Plate 87, Veue du chateau de Seaux et du parterre qui conduit a l'Orangerie, from the late 18th century measures 19.75” x 26.75” and is in excellent condition with light wrinkling around the central crease. Illustrated in this engraving is an expansive view looking on to the grounds of Chateau Seaux. The domaine was bought in 1670 and building began on the chateau for Jean-Baptiste Colbert, Louis XIV's minister of finance. This engraving shows vibrantly dressed noblemen and women on the grounds leading to the garden and fountain areas. This lively engraving shows the interaction among the people and the expert abilities of the artist and engraver to use liner perspectives when creating this multidimensional scene. During the mid to late 18th century, the trend amongst European artists, printmakers and publishers, was to visually record their own country's architectural treasures, and the natural beauty of their gardens. Motivated by national pride, artists and printmakers began to publish views of their most-admired estates and grounds. In addition to being a visual record of the countryside, they were meant to encourage public recognition of national treasures. These prints were meant to be purchased by the English and foreign tourists whom desired a memento of their travels. Louis XIV (1638-1715), the Sun King of France, had grown up during a civil war between rival factions of aristocrats, known as the Fronde, and wanted a site where he could control the French government by absolute rule. Louis settled on the royal hunting lodge at Versailles , which had been acquired by Louis XIII in 1632, and over the following decades expanded it into the largest palace and grounds in the world. It was Louis XIV's hope to create a center for the royal court at Versailles . Beginning in 1669, the architect, Louis Le Vau (1612-1670), began a detailed renovation of the château. The Château of Versailles, outside of Paris , was converted into a spectacular royal palace in a series of four major and distinct building campaigns. By the end of the third building campaign, the Château had taken on most of the appearance that it retains to this day, except for the Royal Chapel in the last decade of the reign. Louis XIV officially moved to Versailles , along with the royal court, on May 6, 1682. Louis had several reasons for creating such a symbol of extravagant opulence and stately grandeur, and for shifting the seat of the monarch. By moving the royal court and the seat of the French government, Louis XIV hoped to gain greater control of the government from the nobility, by requiring that nobles of a certain rank and position spend time each year at Versailles, Louis prevented them from developing their own regional power and kept them from countering his efforts to centralize the French government in an absolute monarchy. Thus, many noblemen had to either to give up all influence, or to depend entirely on the king for grants and subsidies.

Paris: late 18th century - This superb hand-colored engraving, Plate 90, Veue des Parterres de Seaux et du grand canal dans l'Eloignment, from the late 18th century measures 19.75” x 26.75” and is in excellent condition with light foxing in the margins. Illustrated in this engraving is an expansive view of the gardens and fountains, with a large channel seen in the distance. The domaine was bought in 1670 and building began on Chateau Seaux for Jean-Baptiste Colbert, Louis XIV's minister of finance. This engraving shows vibrantly dressed noblemen and women on the grounds among the rich green foliage of the trees and plants. This energetic engraving shows the interaction among the men and women and the expert abilities of the artist and engraver to use liner perspectives when creating this multidimensional scene, that continues far into the horizon. During the mid to late 18th century, the trend amongst European artists, printmakers and publishers, was to visually record their own country's architectural treasures, and the natural beauty of their gardens. Motivated by national pride, artists and printmakers began to publish views of their most-admired estates and grounds.

Elements In Correlation - Printing with the Handpress At Heavenly Monkey; Press Copy

Vancouver: Heavenly Monkey. Fine+. 2009. First Edition; First Printing; Signed by Artist. Hardcover. The edition is 40 numbered copies: The Press copies (numbers 16 - 40) , this copy, are quarter-bound in leather by Claudia Cohen with a unique paste paper for the boards, incorporating a repeating calligraphic HM pattern. These copies have been signed by artist Andrea Taylor. A Press copy, numbered 38; Printed by the author with a Washington press, on dampened sheets of Heavenly Monkey Text paper made specially for this project. The text is set in Dante and Dante Titling, and printed in two colors. Rather than a manual concerned with how to print damp, the text draws on sources such as Eric Gill, Porter Garnett, William Everson and Harry Duncan to focus on why. The essay that forms the core of the bulk - the discussion of damp printing - focuses on how changes in printing methods and materials over the past century are (and are not) reflected in contemporary letterpress publishing. Differences in printing techniques (primarily the results of dry vs damp) will be demonstrated, augmented by four sample leaves spanning four centuries interspersed through the essay: one sample of early printing ( Praestantium Ac Eruditorum Vivorvm Epistoae Et Theologoicae, Henriuvm Dendrinvm, Amsterdam 1670) ; a leaf from a mid-19th century book that combined steelpoint illustration with (dry) letterpress on a coated "art paper" of the period (Poems by Jean Ingelow, Longmans, Green, Reader, & Dyer, London 1867) ; a leaf from a book printed damp under Bruce Rogers' direction at the Riverside Press (Urne-Buriall, or A Discourse of the Sepulchrall Urnes lately found in Norfolk by Sir Thomas Browne, 1907) ; and a leaf from a book printed dry on handmade paper (Gold: Its Properties, Modes Of Extraction, Values, &c. , &c. By F. G. Claudet, Robert Reid & Takao Tanabe 1958) .

Brunet I, 1450; Auf Anweisung von Papst Innozenz X. revidierte Fassung der bischöflichen Liturgieordnung. "A book containing the rites and ceremonies to be observed at Mass, Vespers, and other functions, by bishops and prelates of inferior rank, in metropolitan, cathedral, and collegiate churches. It treats also of the manner of precedence among ecclesiastics and official lay persons [...] Shortly after Sixtus V had instituted (1587) the Congregation of Sacred Rites and Ceremonies, Clement VIII appointed a commission of learned prelates to correct the 'Caeremoniale Episcoporum', which he promulgated by the Apostolic Letter 'Cum novissime', 14 July, 1600. When in course of time errors crept into this, Innocent X had it revised by a commission of cardinals, and by his Constitution 'Etsi alias' (30 July, 1650) ordered it to be observed everywhere" (A. J. Schulte, in: Cath. Enc. III, s. v.). Macaw

Paris 1670 - Nicolas Robert Macaw Paris, circa 1670 Watercolor on vellum with gold fillet 23 3/4” x 20 1/2” framed (professionally framed with a beautiful gold leaf moulding with all archival materials and uv plexiglass) Nicolas Robert (1614-1685) was one of the greatest natural history artists of the 17th century, and his work established standards combining scientific accuracy and esthetic appeal that influenced generations of artists and won the respect and patronage of the French royal family. Robert created a vast, exquisite body of work for the French Crown. Along with other artists, Robert was commissioned by Gaston d’Orleans, brother of Louis XIII, to create watercolors of the rare plants and exotic birds he had assembled in his garden at Blois and the Ménagerie at Versailles. Robert’s talent was recognized quickly as being superior to that of other artists working for the royal family, and after Gaston d’Orleans’s death, he was quickly placed under the patronage of the Sun King, Louis XIV. As a reward for the stunning works he painted for the king’s personal collection, Robert was named “Peintre Ordinaire du Roi” in 1666, a title that confirmed his continuing fame and patronage. Robert was the first significant contributor to a collection of fine watercolors on vellum that became known, collectively, as the Velins du Roi (the King’s Vellums). The watercolors Robert completed under Gaston d’Orleans and then Louis XIV for the royal collection fed the interest and provided the inspiration for the great masters of botanical and ornithological art who followed: Jean Joubert, Nicholas Marechal, Gerard van Spaendonck and, of course, Pierre-Joseph Redouté. Thus the extremely fine print work of Parisian natural historians and flower painters as late as 1825 can be traced directly back to the strength of Robert’s tradition. Probably executed for noble patrons, these stunning ornithological watercolors date from around the time of Robert’s period in the court of Louis XIV. The birds are defined with subtle modulations of delicate hues, and the simple yet monumental compositions combine flawless artistry with Robert’s characteristic attention to scientific precision. The vast majority of Robert’s watercolors are housed in public institutions, including the Musee d’Histoire Naturelle in Paris, the British Museum in London, and the Hofbibliothek in Vienna. These watercolors represent an unusual opportunity to obtain original, unique works by a highly important and exceptionally talented artist. The brilliance that made the Sun King recognize Robert as the preeminent watercolorist of his day is still evident in these pristine and charming works.

Archiducatus Austriae Inferioris accuratissima geographica descriptio. Authore Georgio Matthaei Vissher Tyrolensi

Vienna, 1670 - Engraved wall map on 16 sheets, extending north to south from Moravia to Stiria, and west to east from the town of Steyr to Prespurg (Bratislava), vignette views of the Danube from Vienna looking west, and the royal residence in Vienna, upper right and left respectively, and fine cartouches lower left and right, some minor loss to corners of a few sheets. Vischer's sumptuous wall map of Lower Austria. The map would set the standard for the mapping of Lower Austria for the next 50 years. It is dedicated to Leopold I (1640-1705), whose cameo along with his royal consort are depicted above an image of the Imperial Palace in Vienna. The palace would be destroyed during the Turkish siege of 1683. To the upper right corner is a view of the Danube from Vienna looking west, with a key naming the towns and castles. Below the map are two fine cartouches together with a depiction of Vischer surveying using a plane table, with a chain, compass, and notebooks by his feet. Behind him stand three horses, and an assistant who holds up the key to the map. Georg Matth?us Vischer (1628-1696) was an Austrian cartographer and clergyman. It is unclear how Vischer came to acquire his cartographic training, however, he had a sufficient reputation - by the time he became a parish priest at Leon Stein (during the 1660s) - for him to be called upon to complete a survey of Upper Austria. He was granted leave by his Bishop and began his survey work in 1667. The following year he submitted the first draft of the map, which was approved, and then engraved by Melchior Kusell. The following year the map was published and Vischer began the mapping of Lower Austria, the present map, which would be published in 1670. He would go on to publish a map of Styria, and topographical books of Lower and Upper Austria. Although his works were well received, he failed to gain all the promised remuneration from the noblemen and gentry of Austria - not an uncommon problem - and was left with a considerable amount of debt. So much so in fact that he would die penniless in 1696, having been forced to sell all his books and instruments. The map is mentioned in glowing terms by Johann Georg Keyssler in his work 'Travels Through Germany, Bohemia.' (1756): "George Matthew Vischer, a Tirolese, and a minister of Leonstain in Upper Austria, assisted by one Russel, an engraver, published in the year 1669 a very beautiful map of Upper Austria in twelve sheets. In 1670 they also published with the same accuracy and beauty a map of Lower Austria in fifteen (sic) sheets. But in their map of the Dutchy of Stiria, in twelve sheets, they have not succeeded so well." It is also referenced, some 170 years later, by Lt. Col. Lawrence Martin who worked on the new borders of Austria and Germany marked out in the Treaty of Versailles. He would later, from 1924-46 be head of the map department at the Library of Congress: "Do you suppose the seventeenth century geographer [Georg Vischer] dreamed that his map would be used by an itinerant twentieth century geographer from the wilderness of North America, doing geographical fieldwork in His Sacred Majesty's Archduchy of Austria, traveling in the uniform of the army of the United States of America, and reporting to a great Peace Conference in Paris about where the boundaries of the proud and venerable Austria might be? I hope maps of mine will live as long!" He goes on to say: "But this shows what maps can be used for. Maps, multi-shaped, parti-colored, dust gathering objects, the bane of every librarian's existence, which he has to keep - they do have serious use" - a sentiment that we would like to endorse. Munich University 0001/2 Mapp. 88; UB Augsburg 02/IV.3.2.16; BNF FRBNF40741749; Keyssler, J.G., Travels through Germany, Bohemia. 1756
