        Tractatus theologico-politicus... -

Hamburgi, Henricus Künrath (= Amsterdam, Jan Rieuwertsz), 1670. In-4 piccolo (19,4 x 14,5 cm.). Piena pelle, piatti con filetti e decorazioni agli angoli impressi a secco, dorso con nervi, filetti oro e tassello rosso: bella e solida legatura moderna in stile dell'epoca. (12), 233 pp.; senza l'ultima carta bianca; alone d'umidità sulle prime 4 carte; buon esemplare. "His fame spread and when he left Leiden for the Hague in 1663 he was already finding it difficult to prevent the surreptitious printing of his first great work, the Tractatus Theologico-Politicus. It constituted an extension to political thought of his ethical views. Man is moved to the knowledge and love of God; the love of God involves the love of our fellow men. Man, in order to obtain security, surrenders part of his right of independent action to the State. But the State exists to give liberty, not to enslave; justice, wisdom and tolerance are essential to the sovereign power. Spinoza's thought, a fusion of Cartesian rationalism and the Hebraic tradition in which he grew up, is a solitary but crystal-clear exposition of the theory of natural right. He defends with eloquence the liberty of thought and speech in speculative matters, and the Tractatus contains the first clear statement of the independence of each other of philosophy and religion, in that speculation and precepts of conduct cannot collide." (PMM 153). Bamberger T4. Kingma/Offenberg 7. First edition, fifth issue. Without last blank leaf, light marginal damp stain on first five leaves, otherwise a good copy in an attractive period-style calf binding, with blind-stamped fillets and corner pieces on covers, spine with four raised bands and a red leather label.

Triumphal arches and catafalques (elaborate funeral biers) erected in the years 1715, 1721-1723 and 1737]. [Sienna, ca. 1728, with 1 addition ca. 1737]. Folio (ca. 29 x 21 cm). 8 original drawings in black ink with ink washes plus 1 additional line drawing of a catafalque added about a decade later. Never bound, but formerly sewn.

      - Original ink and ink-wash drawings of 5 triumphal arches and 3 catafalques (elaborate funeral biers), plus an additional line drawing of a 4th catafalque on the back of one leaf, all erected at various locations in the city of Siena in Tuscany: in the cathedral, in the piazza before the cathedral, in Palazzo Piccolomini and at the Porta Santuccio. The drawings are richly decorated with sculptures, bas-reliefs, columns, cartouches, vases, candelabras and decorations, including Christian and classical figures and putti. The five triumphal arches were all erected for the occasion of the entry of Alessandro Zondadari (1670-1745), the new archbishop of Sienna on 11 August 1715. He was the fourth and last son of Ansano Zondadari and Agnese di Mario Chigi. She was a niece of Pope Alexander VII and heir of her brother Cardinal Flavio Chigi, one of the most influential and powerful men in Siena. One catafalque was erected for the funeral of Alessandro Zondadari's older brother Marc' Antonio Zondadari (1658-1722), Grand Master of the Sovereign Military and Hospitaller Order of Knights of St. John of Jerusalem and Malta. Flavio Chigi went to great lengths to advance the prestige and power of his Zondadari relatives, paying many thousands of scudi to the Grand Duke of Tuscany, Cosimo III de' Medici (1642-1723) for hereditary titles he could pass on. It is therefore no surprise that the Zondadari arches and catafalques are accompanied by catafalques for the Grand Duke himself and his wife Margarita Luisa d'Orléans (1645-1721), daughter of Gaston, Duke of Orléans and brother of King Louis XIII. Formerly folded down the middle. With a small and faint stain in the first leaf an even smaller one in the second leaf, and an occasional small spot, but still in very good condition. A lovely set of drawings.

His posterioribus diebus grassis augmentatus, & à mandatis Conardorum abbatis Yo, de Rothomago, in lucem enuoyatus. [unito a:] Nova novorum novissima, sive Poemata stylo macaronico conscripta

Stampatus in stampatura stampatorum, s.l. [forse Francoforte] 1670 - 2 opere unite editorialmente in 1 volume in-12 (150x95 mm.), pp. 191, (1). Fregio xilografico (pavone) al primo frontespizio. Elegante legatura di stile Luigi XVI in piena pelle marezzata, piatti incorniciati da bordura a dente di topo e a rotella, unghie decorate in oro, dorso liscio con anforette incise in oro e titolo inciso sempre in oro su tassello in marocchino rosso. Segnacolo serico azzurro. Ottimo esemplare. Bibliografia: Brunet, I, 393-394: "Cette édition est recherchée".

Palau, 23442. [Attributes: First Edition]

Amsterdam Jean Jansson à Waesberge 1670 - First edition in French, folio, [xiv], 367, [xii]pp., additional engraved title, engraved portrait, 2 folding maps, 23 engraved plates (3 folding) as per list, numerous engravings in the text, modern calf antique preserving old end-papers, a very good example. 'One of the most influential books in shaping the European conception of China in its day' (Löwendahl). "Gathering his work from other members of the Society [of Jesuits], Kircher wrote one of the century's most influential treatises on China. His primary purpose was to establish the authenticity of the Nestorian monument discovered in Sian, and to that end he produced in print the original Chinese and Syriac inscriptions on the monument, the Chinese text in romanization, and finally a Latin translation and his explication of the Chinese and Syriac texts. In addition, Kircher included a sizeable description of China and other places in Asia. For example, in a section devoted to Christianity in China, he sketched all the old overland routes, including that of Grueber and d'Orville from Agra to Peking, as well as giving a description of Tibet. Following what he thought to be the spread of idolatry from the Near East to Persia, India, and finally to East Asia, Kircher described the religions of China, Japan, and India. There are several chapters on government, customs, geography, fauna, flora, and mechanical arts of China, and a very interesting scholarly discussion of the Chinese language. There is a long Chinese-Latin dictionary. Kircher's volume contains several beautiful pictures taken from Chinese and Mughal originals, which Grueber had brought back to Europe with him in 1664. Although the book was not the product of Kircher's own experience in China, it was frequently used or cited as a source of information by later writers. Some of the information contained in it, for example the text of the Nestorian monument, Roth's description of Hindu religion, and Grueber's description of Tibet, had not appeared in print before."         [Triumphal arches and catafalques (elaborate funeral biers) erected in the years 1715, 1721-1723 and 1737]. [Sienna, ca. 1728, with 1 addition ca. 1737]. Folio (ca. 29 x 21 cm). 8 original drawings in black ink with ink washes plus 1 additional line drawing of a catafalque added about a decade later. Never bound, but formerly sewn.

Original ink and ink-wash drawings of 5 triumphal arches and 3 catafalques (elaborate funeral biers), plus an additional line drawing of a 4th catafalque on the back of one leaf, all erected at various locations in the city of Siena in Tuscany: in the cathedral, in the piazza before the cathedral, in Palazzo Piccolomini and at the Porta Santuccio.

        A journey into Spain.

London, printed for Henry Herringman, 1670. - 8vo (165 x 105 mm), pp. [viii], 247, [1, blank]; slightly browned; contemporary sheep; extremities rubbed; some worming to front cover; remnants of label on spine; from the library of the earls of Macclesfield.First edition in English. A free and abridged translation of Voyage d'Espagne curieux, historique et politique, first published anonymously in 1665. Setting out from the Netherlands in 1651 in the company of François van Aerssen, Brunel toured France, Germany and Italy before travelling to Spain in March 1655. The party made its way to Madrid via San Sebastián, Vitoria and Burgos, returning to France at the end of June via Zaragoza, Tudela and Pamplona. Aranjuez and Alcalá de Henares are also described. Brunel compiled this account of his travels around 1657 using his own notes and those of Van Aerssen (who drowned on his return to the Netherlands and to whom the work is sometimes attributed).A Journey into Spain, in its portrayal of the country as religiously, politically and socially backward, demonstrates a conscious awareness in Europe of Spain's decline as a world power during the mid-seventeenth century. Brunel's account of his experiences in Spain confirm John Lynch's statement that the 'syndrome of rural poverty, depopulation, financial chaos, and recession of American trade produced Spain's first great crisis in the modern period. The crisis can be dated between 1598 and 1620, and it was a crisis of change, denoting a reversal of the economic trends of the sixteenth century. The worst was still to come. From 1640 political disintegration and military collapse compounded the economic disorder and reduced Spain to absolute depression. And by this time there was no hope of relief from America' (Lynch, Spain under the Habsburgs II pp. 10–11).Palau 372954; Wing B5230. Language: Spanish & Catalan [Attributes: First Edition]

With the several denominations of their coasts, harbors, creeks, rivers, lakes, cities, towns, castles, and villages. Their customs, modes, and manners, languages, religions, and inexhaustible treasure; with their governments and policy, variety of trade and barter, and also of their wonderful plants, beasts, birds, and serpents.

      T. Johnson London 1670 - First edition. Folio (43 x 28cm. approx.), xvi, 768pp., half-title, engraved frontispiece, 47 engraved plates and maps as called for in list of plates, most double-page or folding, also with 10 engravings on 5 sheets, not called for in list of plates but present in most copies, 46 engravings in text, contemporary panelled calf gilt, red morocco lettering piece. Ogilby was Cosmographer to Charles II. "Africa" was the first publication in Ogilby's great project to create an Atlantic or English Atlas designed to increase England's trade and extend her national prestige. Ogilby's idea of an atlas meant not only maps but also available and up-to-date translations of various accounts, principally from Dapper. Although he used the same frontispiece, title-page and maps as Dapper, Ogilby used folio sheets one-third larger than Dapper's which made the volume more impressive. Ogilby also added tales of English interest such as the attack on the "Mary Rose" specifically for the home market. Wing 0163; Tooley, Africa, p87. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Portugal - Frederick de Wit, 1670.

FRAAIE ANTIEKE KAART VAN PORTUGAL"Novissima Regnorum Portugalliae et Algabriae?.

Dominici Ferri, Bologna 1670 - A fine copy of one of the most important early treatises on fluid mechanics. In this work Borelli "argues against positive levity, discusses the Torricellian experiment, takes up siphons, pumps, and the nature of fluidity, tries to understand the expansion of water while freezing, and deals with fermentation and other chemical processes" (DSB). "This work is important as the first treatise on capillarity, and for containing important investigations on the action of capillary tubes, in which the author, inter alia, formulates the law that the height of the ascent of liquids in capillary tubes is inversely proportional to their diameters. His investigations also led him to the conclusion that the phenomenon of capillarity is independent of the pressure of air" (Zeitlinger in Sotheran, First supplement, 3060). "[De motionibus naturalibus] was well known among Borelli’s contemporaries and is quoted by Varignon in his Projet d’une nouvelle mechanique. It is reviewed in the first volume of Philosophical Transactions Abridged, where it is praised for its thoroughness, for the discussion of Torricelli's experiments and for Borelli’s stand against Descartes on the nature of fluidity" (Roberts & Trent). Borelli regarded this work, together with his De vi percussionis (1667), as necessary preparation for his masterpiece, De motum animalium (1680-81), on which he had worked since the early 1660s. The work appeared in three subsequent editions, testifying to its influence."While On the Force of Percussion laid out some foundational propositions relating to motion and colliding bodies, the subsequent work, On the Natural Motions, was intended to be far more wide reaching In the concluding propositions to On the Force of Percussion, Borelli dismisses Aristotle’s views on falling bodies. Borelli begins On the Natural Motions in that same pose. He attacks Aristotle for supposing that elements possess either heaviness or lightness. According to Aristotle, positive levity (referring to the supposed intrinsic lightness of bodies that allows them to rise rather than fall in a natural state) is a quality of air and re. Earth and water, on the other hand, contain a gravity that impels them towards their natural place at the centre of the earth. Borelli makes it clear from the outset of this second book that he is determined to dispel these views" (Boschiero). "Giovanni Alfonso Borelli, while embracing the doctrine of corpuscles in motion , uniquely sought to constrain it by means of mathematics. In De motionibus naturalibus a gravitate pendentibus he was concerned ‘to show that all events in the world of body are up for explanation by the force of heaviness only, if only one attributes fitting shapes to the particles of bodies, so that the force of heaviness, directed toward the center of the Earth, compels them according to mechanical laws [i.e., those of statics] to move in other directions, too, depending on circumstance. He therefore regards the corpuscles as machines, which are moved by the force yet determined as to direction by their construction. Since the only driving force is thus the pressure of bodies upon others and themselves, he conceives of the totality of movements on Earth as a problem in hydrostatics’" (Cohen, pp. 393-4). "Borelli’s analysis of the collision of elastic bodies relies on a notion of the spring-like and machine-like properties of some parts of nature. For example, air particles impact upon each other, transmitting a motive virtue one upon the other that is maintained through the compressive properties of these corpuscles. In other words, each corpuscle of air, when impacted, compresses, moves as a result of its attained motive virtue and recoils in order to re-acquire its lost space before impacting onto another particle. In such an environment, less dense particles of re, with their own shapes and properties inconsistent with those of air, are pushed upwards. Thus, Borelli debunks Aristotle’s theory of positive l [Attributes: First Edition]

Attractive subject. Etching on a verge type hand laid paper. Description: 17th c. etchings of Antonie van Waterloo are scarse. It is assumed by experts that Cornelis Danckerts II acquired control of the waterloo plates as early 1655, so well during Waterloo's lifetime. As such most 17th. C. plates are published by Danckerts. The numbering of the plates also points to that. The plates later passed over to the Ottens family earliest 1717.Artists and Engravers: This plate was etched by the reknown Anthonie (Anthony) Waterloo. Although etched he is known to have added accents to his work by burin and other engraving techniques as well. Anthonie Waterloo (1609-1690) is born in Lille, but his family moved to Amsterdam probably to escape religious persecution. He was a painter and etcher and famous for his landscapes (136 items). He developed his own style, probably as an auto-didact. Although Waterloo traveled widely, many of his landscapes were probably imagined in the workshop and were influenced by the work of other landscapists. Condition: Fair. Excellent impression. General age related toning with light soiling. Light folding, barely noticable on front. Paper loss in top and bottom left margin. Bottom right margin slightly remargined. It is reviewed in the first volume of Philosophical Transactions Abridged, where it is praised for its thoroughness, for the discussion of Torricelli's experiments and for Borelli's stand against Descartes on the nature of fluidity" (Roberts & Trent). Borelli regarded this work, together with his De vi percussionis (1667), as necessary preparation for his masterpiece, De motum animalium (1680-81), on which he had worked since the early 1660s. The work appeared in three subsequent editions, testifying to its influence. Provenance: The Earls of Macclesfield (bookplate on front paste-down and blind-stamps on first three leaves); Sotheby's London, 19 June 2004 (lot 387, £5,040). "While On the Force of Percussion laid out some foundational propositions relating to motion and colliding bodies, the subsequent work, On the Natural Motions, was intended to be far more wide reaching ... In the concluding propositions to On the Force of Percussion, Borelli dismisses Aristotle's views on falling bodies. Borelli begins On the Natural Motions in that same pose. Thus, Borelli debunks Aristotle's theory of positive levity, which attributes motion only to intrinsic qualities of nature rather than extrinsic forces proportional to elastic properties of corpuscles. To illustrate his point, on several occasions Borelli discusses the 'structure of air': It is . . . reasonable to assign to the particles of air a structure which forces them to unfold when they are constricted against their natural requirement. We understand this if we conceive that the substance of air consists of countless juxtaposed small machines. Then we clearly perceive that an elastic virtue can be found in this aggregate since the small machines attempt at dilating after being compressed (Prop. XCCIII). "After covering further ground with the description of theories and experiments to do with the vacuum, the Torricellian tube and the freezing process of liquids, Borelli reaches his conclusions reminding his readers of the nal destination of this project: This is enough on the motions resulting from the innate force of gravity. We indeed do not consider extending further these preliminaries nor delaying the edition of the main argument on the movements of animals longer (Prop. CCLXXVII)" (Boschiero). Born in Naples, Giovanni Borelli (1608-79) studied mathematics at Rome under Benedetto Castelli. Sometime before 1640 he was appointed professor of mathematics at Messina. In the early 1640s, he met Galileo in Florence. In 1656 Borelli was appointed to the chair of mathematics at the University of Pisa, a post previously held by Galileo. It was in Pisa that Borelli met the Italian anatomist Marcello Malpighi; the two men became founder members of the short-lived Accademia del Cimento. Motivated by Malpighi's own studies, Borelli began his first investigations into the science of animal movement. This began an interest that would continue for the rest of his life, eventually earning him the title of the Father of Biomechanics. In May 1665, Cardinal Michelangelo Ricci, Roman correspondent and adviser to the Tuscan Court, wrote to Prince Leopoldo de Medici, the patron of the Cimento, encouraging Borelli to apply himself to the composition of a treatise on motion. Borelli's initial response was that he was instead concentrating on a treatise on anatomy, but, seemingly at Ricci's insistence, Borelli eventually agreed, the result being the two works De vi percussionis and De motionibus naturalibus. Both works were composed, or at least drafted, before his departure from the Medici court in 1667, when he returned to Messina. At this point the Cimento effectively ceased to function, even though it apparently was not formally dissolved, and even though Prince, now Cardinal, Leopold continued to direct some experimental work until he died in 1675. "On the way [to Messina, Borelli] passed through Rome and stopped for the summer in Naples. While there he was the guest of the Investiganti for whom he repeated many of the experiments he had performed at the Cimento. And he also repeated for his own edification some work that the Investiganti had accomplished independently. As a result of this visit, Concublet provided for the publication of De motionibus naturalibus, for which Borelli reciprocated by writing a warm dedication to him" (DSB). The Accademia degli Investiganti was founded in 1663 by Leonardo di Capua, under the patronage of Andrea Concublet, Marquis of Arena.
