ARBORETUM MATHEMATICUM. [and] ASTROLOGIA SANA, LICITA & NATURALIS

Melchior Bergen, Dresden 1669 - 192 x 150 mm. (7 1/2 x 5 7/8"). 12 p.l., XXXXVI, [3], 41, [2], 42-311, [4], 312-435, [4], 436-663 pp., [6] leaves. FIRST EDITION. HANDSOME CONTEMPORARY CALF, LAVISHLY GILT, covers with multiple frames of decorative rolls enclosing a central panel with complex gilt coat of arms, raised bands, spine panels with wheel medallion flanked by fleurons (joints expertly repaired). With engraved title page depicting astronomers using their instruments and 77 woodcuts. Houzeau-Lancaster 11530 (citing the 1680 edition); Thorndike VIII, 330; Collis, "The Petrine Instauration: Religion, Esotericism and Science at the Court of Peter the Great, 1689-1725," p. 90. Gilt on lower cover a little rubbed, with minor loss to coat of arms, extremities lightly rubbed, one leaf with small hole affecting a couple of words in a table, minor offsetting in text bed and from woodcuts, occasional mild browning or light dampstains to margins, otherwise an excellent, fresh copy in a sound binding shining with gilt. This is a compendium of astrological information by the court mathematician of the Elector of Saxony, offered here in an appealing, elaborately decorated armorial binding. In this volume, astronomer, astrologer, mathematician, and art historian Tobias Beutel (1627-90) discusses astronomical instruments, solar and lunar eclipses, and the influence of the stars and planets on the natural world and human events. As Robert Collis notes in his history of Western esotericism, Beutel "combined geometrical studies on the position of the planets and the moon with astrological remarks on the horoscopes of reigning monarchs" to produce a "unified perspective connecting the microcosm of 17th century European politics with the cosmic movements in an erudite 'summa' of German Renaissance astronomical and chronological science." He also calculates the latitude and longitude of 500 cities. The woodcuts show the zodiac charts for rulers of the Holy Roman Empire, various German duchies and electorates, and Scandinavian countries; the stages of lunar and solar eclipses; methods for determining the position of the sun, moon, and stars at various times of day; and other tools to assist in casting natal charts. The elaborately decorated binding no doubt previously graced the library of a 17th century German noble, and it is certainly possible that it was made for a presentation copy. In 1669 the Elzevier publishing house put out a French Bible, for which they enlisted popular artists to illustrate a frontispiece and maps. The La Sainte Bible appears to have been planned at least a decade before its publication, and was to include 5 maps to illustrate several stories. Berchem worked with Jan de Visscher (1632-1692) and Abraham Blotelingh (1640-1690) as engravers of the five maps. He had worked previously with Nicolaes Visscher, so he as clearly familiar with these printing houses. The Elzevier publishing house was a natural choice for the publication of this new French edition of the Bible. Established in 1581 by Louis Elzevier, a Protestant émigré from Louvain, the firm flourished in the seventeenth century. Through the years, 15 members of the Elzevier family assumed control of the business, operating printing shops in Leiden, The Hague, Utrecht and Amsterdam. Note: Because there is no printed list of plates in this work, the actual location of some of the full-page engravings may differ or not be present. Also, the engraving count may differ between the various copies and editions. These early books were assembled by very young and mostly illiterate "printer's devil." The insertion of the plates were commonly inserted upside down, or omitted by their error. Due to this reason, total print count may vary. On page 220, the one-third engraving: "CHINESE PRIESTS AND MONKS" is upside down. There is a pagination error from page 184, where the page numbers skip to page 205 and continue onward. This simply means an error in the numbering the pages, nothing is missing or lacking. Part one properly ends at page 327.There are a few of the usual "printer's devil" feint inky finger prints in the margin of a few pages. By and large the books is exceptionally clean and free from any or other marks, blemishes and issues. . *** THE CONTENTS: . [a Buddhist icon], 8 text engravings of flora & fauna, a full page engraving of "The Bridg...," and 3 other text engravings. . * HISTORTIC IMPORTANCE: . This grand-scale Deluxe and RARE work was one of the earliest English language texts which brought new and wondrous information to England and Europe, of a continent mostly unknown at that time. China was a distant and closed nation, and only a few early Jesuits were allowed access to the interior. . *** THE EMBASSY: This embassy was Europe's first attempt to open China to the west. A truly superb and marvelous primary resource. Stunning, documenting an important beginning in European contact and diplomatic history with China. Books of this period, size, and caliber have now become exceptionally scarce, and seldom found complete in excellent condition. . *** WHO WAS JAN NIEUHOFF [1618-1672], THE DUTCH EXPLORER: . Jan [John in English] Nieuhoff was the steward, chronicler and draftsman for the first Dutch embassy to China. In the mid-17 century, the Dutch were at the height of their power and decided to gain access to China and a share of the Chinese trade. After a great deal of Chinese opposition, the Dutch did manage to succeed in sending some merchants to test the trade waters of Canton. . The drawings during Nieuhoff's travels of both Canton and Peking were also later used to produce the first engravings of China to be published in England. Interesting insights to both the Dutch and Chinese world views are revealed in the text. It took the Dutch embassy a long while to convince the Chinese that they had any homeland at all. The Chinese had been convinced they were sea nomads ! The lack of success of the Dutch was really a result of Portuguese Jesuit intrigues and had little to do with the behavior of diplomatic skills of the Dutch. This is a rich and revealing primary resource that reports on the important meeting between East and West. . *** Quoted from Dunne [see below] : "Interesting is Nieuhoff's description of the Shun-chih Emperor as he saw him at the imperial audience where the Dutchmen were received together with an embassy from the great Mogul'A young man, white of skin, of medium size; rather plain, wearing a vest which seemed woven from gold." page 348. Adam Schall was also present at this historic meeting and he spoke to the Dutchmen in German. . *** CONDITION: THE FULL SIZE, UNTRIMMED COPY: . This copy is in the full-size as issued, not a trimmed down version of the original. Other copies are smaller having been been trimmed. . THE BINDING: BINDING: This folio is 27 x 42 cm., it is bound in full calf, preserving the original gold-stamped decorated covers. The spine consists of six raised bands and seven compartments: five black, two red, all gold-stamped with large decorations. There are two red label stateing "OGILBY'S CHINA," below which is the second red label stating "Vol. I." . This is companion volume identically bound as volume II by by Arnoldus Montanus, title: ATLAS CHINENSIS: BEING A SECOND PART OF A RELATION OF REMARKABLE PAFFAGES IN TWO EMBASSIES FROM THE EAST-INDIA COMPANY OF THE UNITED PROVINCES, TO THE VICE-ROY SINGLAMONG & GENERAL TAISING LIPOVI, AND TO KONCHI, EMPEROR OF CHINA...London 1670, please see our number: 410265 on our website or check with us for availability. . There is a nicely etched period armorial bookplate inside the front cover. *** THE CONTENTS: By and large the contents is clean. There is some of the usual minor transfer on a few, discoloration or 'toning' to some pages, usual minor foxing, a few pages with small marginal stains, a few professionally mended tiny closed tears, else this is an excellent example, firm and squarely bound, with all edges clean and aligned. We tend to be overly critical of condition, by and large in collector's condition. By and large a nice copy of a very RARE book ! . *** THE TRANSLATOR: JOHN OGILBY [1600-1676]. See Wikipedia for additional background information. . Per the title page the work was: "Englifhd, and fet forth with their feveral Sculptures, by John Ogilby Efq; His Majesties Cofmographer, Geographick printer, and mafter of the revels in the Kingdom of Ireland." [sic] . *** The title pages of both first and second editions were printed in red and black ink, as issued. . *** CONDITION: This book is nearly 350 years old, as can be expected with any work of this age, there are always the normal and usual minor scuffing, minor wear to the corners & edges. The work was professionally re-backed perhaps more than a 100 years ago, preserving the original spine. The book is firmly bound and very solid. . *** This is a large, heavy and valuable work. At our option, it will only be shipped by Fedex, appropriate packing, insurance and signature fees apply. . . ************************************************************ . NOTE ! The below only applies to the SECOND EDITION SECOND EDITION: . Contains 19 full-page sheets, one is a double-page, one has 2 plates on a single sheet, plus 94 smaller text illustrations, all are copper-etched and engraved. . *** CONTENTS: . Three parts in one folio by John Macock for the author: * Part I: AN EMBASSY. * Part II: A NARRATIVE OF THE SUCCESS OF AN EMBASSAGE SENT BY JOHN MAATZUYKER DE BADEM, GENERAL OF BATAVIA; UNTO THE EMPEROUR OF CHINA & TARTARY, THE 20 OF JULY 1655. SOLICITING A LICENSE OF TRADE IN THE PORT OF HIS EMPIRE. * Part III: Appendix OR SPECIAL REMARKS TAKEN AT LARGE OUT OF ATHANASIUS KIRCHER HIS ANTIQUITIES OF CHINA. Gebonden in perkament, (42)+650 pag., geillustreerd. C1030."Rotterdam Bibliopolis, pag. 126, nr. 170; Haitsma Mulier/van der Lem 228 a; Fruin, Verspr. Geschr. VII, pag. 470 e.v.

Christ's Certain and Sudden Appearance to Judgment [Signed in Ink by Thomas Vincent at the end of Vincent's preface "To The Citizens of London"]. By Thomas Vincent, Sometime Minister of Maudlins Milk=Street, London.

The Third Edition. London, Printed for George Calvert and Samuel Sprint, 1669. Small Octavo. 6 unnumbered pages (incl. Titlepage), 264 pages [collation complete]. 19th century Hardcover. Front board cleanly detached. Inkstain to titlepage. Tears without loss of text to pages 1 - 4, small damage to outer margin of text on page 59/60. Name of female preowner verso titlepage (dated April 1695). Extremely scarce and highly unusual in a signed edition. Thomas Vincent (May 1634 – 15 October 1678) was an English Puritan minister and author. He is referenced as a main character featured in "The Living," by Anthony Clarvoe, a play about 1665 plague London.nThomas Vincent, the second son of John Vincent and elder brother of Nathaniel Vincent (both also prominent ministers), was born at Hertford in May 1634. After passing through Westminster School, and Felsted grammar school in Essex, he entered as a student at Christ Church, Oxford, in 1648, matriculated 27 February 1651, and graduated B.A. 16 March 1652, M.A. 1 June 1654, when he was chosen catechist. Leaving the university, he became chaplain to Robert Sidney, 2nd Earl of Leicester. In 1656 he was incorporated at Cambridge. He was soon put into the sequestered rectory of St. Mary Magdalene, Milk Street, London (he was probably ordained by the sixth London classis), and held it till the Uniformity Act of 1662 ejected him.nnHe retired to Hoxton, where he preached privately, and at the same time assisted Thomas Doolittle [nonconformist minister] in his school at Bunhill Fields. During 1665, the year of the Great Plague of London, he preached constantly in parish churches.nHis account of the plague in God's Terrible Voice in the City by Plague and Fire, 1667, is graphic; seven in his own household died as a result of the plague. Subsequently he gathered a large congregation at Hoxton, apparently in a wooden meeting-house, of which for a time he was dispossessed.nnHe was among the signers of the 1673 Puritan Preface to the Scots Metrical Psalter. He did not escape imprisonment for his nonconformity. He died on 15 October 1678, and was buried (27 October) in the churchyard of St Giles-without-Cripplegate. His funeral sermon was preached by Samuel Slater. (Wikipedia)

&c. In sermonem latinum vertit, notisq'; necessariis illustravit Joannes Schefferus argentoratentis.

1669 - Stockholm, N. Wankivius, 1669. Folio. Engraved front,(14),234,(1) pp. Contemporary marbled calf with raised bands, spine richly decorated in gilt (partly oxidized), sprinkled edges. Minor worming at top of rear joint, covers with some shallow worming, in particular on the front. Old ink numberings and a crossed-out signature on front pastedown. A few minor tears in upper margin on p. 1. Occasional insignificant foxing and spotting. A very good copy from Biby Manor in Södermanland, Sweden.Collijn Sveriges bibliografi 1600-talet 462. This copy with the rare extra celebratory poem by N. Heinsius. Front engraved by Dionysius Padt Brugge from an original by David Klöcker Ehrenstrahl. It depicts the young Charles XI at the helm of the ship of Sweden. The text was first published by J. T. Bureus in 1634 and reprinted in 1650. The manuscript used by Bureus was no longer available, and Schefferus had to work with the printed text in Bureus' edition, to which he nonetheless made several improvements and added a parallel text in Latin. The work is a mirror for princes written during the Swedish Middle Ages. It may have been written for King Magnus Eriksson c. 1330. The author is unknown, but the work is probably an adaptation of "De regimine principum" by the Italian theologian and writer Colonna, which was written for Philip IV of France. Although the text is based on foreign models it is both in language and content a very successful and original adaptation. The manuscript probably originated from Vadstena Abbey in the southern part of Sweden. Schefferus' edition was made by order of the rich and influential nobleman Magnus Gabriel De la Gardie who also paid for the printing. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Il tabacco opera ... Nella quale si tratta dell'origine, historia, coltura, preparatione, qualità, natura, virtù, & uso in fumo, in polvere, in foglia, in lambitivo, et in medicina della pianta volgarmente detta tabacco ... Trattato naturale, medico, morale, e curioso.Rome, Filippo Maria Mancini, 1669. 8vo With 6 full-page woodcuts. Later sheepskin parchment.

Arents II, 309; Krivatsy, p. 1140. First and only edition of an informative compendium on tobacco by Benedetto Stella. In his preface Stella's states that he doesn't have any intention to be original and just wants to make a compendium comprehensible to all of his countrymen. For this he used the usual sources, such as Magnenus and Neander, but also includes some controversial ideas. Mentioning the papal interdictions against the use of tobacco by the clergy, Stella thought the use of tobacco necessary for Catholic priests and monks who lived a chaste life, since he believed the smoke would repress the "sensual urges". The book includes information on the quality, cultivation, and preparation of the plant, together with an exhaustive examination of tobacco's medical qualities. Other chapters deal with the custom of smoking, different types of pipes (also shown on the woodcut illustrations), tobacco's role in divination among the Indians, and its rapid spread throughout the world.Browned with some occasional minor foxing, with a water stain on pages 77-115. Very small tear in the vellum on the front board, but otherwise in very good condition.

Second edition, more enhanced by the author. Rare, is not found prior to publishing it to the BN of France or the British Library. vignette on title. Pages with red and black titles. "Half red calf wide corners early twentieth century. smooth back, as in long, double-net head and tail of spine. Date tail, double-net Cold boards. Nice copy. The book consists of 126 short stories, most pleasant and comical, often affecting the manners and gallantry. The second part contains 28 stories being passed in Holland paper with more creepy tales (stories of crimes, beheadings, thieves, dramas?). The stories are in a style reminiscent used by historians of the seventeenth, otherwise all stories are satire or criticism mores of the time (often ending with a moral short), and in this they are quite valuable for the information they provide countless life, morals and manners in the seventeenth and especially in Holland paper (but we see scroll across Europe). The first edition was given to the same address in 1663 III. Barbier, 844. Brunet III, 213. Parival (1605-1669), French author and professor at the University of Leiden gave further Delights of Holland paper and Stories from the miseries of that time. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate.

Pp. 1-18; ?An Apppendix or Special Remarks taken at large out of Athanasius Kircher His Antiquities of China.? Pp 1 -21; ?Of The Various Voyages & Travels Undertaken Into China.? Pp. 22-106. ?Johannes Nieuhof (1618-1672), steward to the China delegation of the Dutch East India Company, wrote Gezantschap der Neerlandtsche Oost-Indische Compagnie aan den grooten Tartarischen Cham, den tegenwoordigen keizer van China, published in 1665. This book was divided into two parts, the first being an account of the trip made by the Dutch to Beijing in 1655 in an attempt to establish free trade with the Qing government, and the second half being a description of China. John Ogilby, for the English edition, added a number of additional parts from important sources. Ogilby started his career as a dancer at court. An injury forced him to retire and he moved to Ireland where he opened a theatre. He became Master of the Revels for Ireland, but the Irish rebellion forced him to leave. He returned to London when he was fifty and married a wealthy widow; her capital helped to enable him to begin his career as a publisher. He started with translations of classics. His first book was a translation of Virgil, which proved to be highly popular and was reprinted several times. He followed this with translations of the Iliad, Aesop and the Bible. Unfortunately most of his work was destroyed in the Great Fire of London in 1666. He petitioned the King, stating he had lost over ?3000 worth of stock and asked that he be able to import French paper tax free. This meant that his works would be of a better quality and cheaper to produce. In 1669 he published the first edition of the Dutch Embassy to China. This book combined Nieuhoff?s original work with letters from the Jesuit father John Adams as well as a partial translation of Athanasius Kircher?s China Illustrata (1667). The first edition was sold by lottery and such a success that Ogilby was able to set up his own printing shop and led him to publish his series of great atlases. Ogilby originally planned to publish one atlas for every continent, but in the end published only Africa (1670), Atlas Japannensis (1670), Atlas Chinensis (1671), America (1671) and Asia (1673). These atlases were folios printed on fine paper, which he had imported from France, and were heavily illustrated and included maps. ___________________ The mid-seventeenth century was a period of great change for China. The year 1644 saw the fall of the Ming dynasty with the invasion of the Manchu forces from the north. The Qing troops destroyed cities and killed thousands in their conquest. This destruction was still evident eleven years later, when the embassy took place. Repeated passages reference the destruction of towns and cities and the vast numbers of people killed. But it was directly because of this cataclysmic change in dynasty that the embassy was allowed to take place. The Dutch United East India Company, or Vereenigde Oost-Indische Comapagnie (VOC) was greatly interested in the profits to be had from improving their dealings with Asia. And the VOC had heard from the Jesuit Martin Martini that the: Great Cham of Tartary had Conqur?d the Empire of China, and all the Kingdoms belonging thereunto, with the slaughter of some hundred thousands of people, and had proclaimed a Free Trade in the city of Canton to all Foreign People. They decided to send an embassy to China in the hopes of establishing free trade with the Chinese. At first they met with officials in Canton who assured them that such free trade would exist, but that a delegation would need to be sent to the Emperor for his official agreement. The VOC was the first embassy to make the to see the new Qing Emperor, Shunzhi (1638?1661) at Beijing, which the Manchu had established as their new capital. The negotiations were slow; the Dutch wished to be allowed to trade yearly at Canton, and only visit Beijing every five years, whilst the Emperor thought only of their visiting the capital and bringing gifts. The VOC clearly wanted trade, whilst the Imperial throne saw their visits as tribute. As their letters show, the Jesuits at court were strongly cautioning the Emperor against establishing free trade with the Dutch. They claimed that: The Hollanders may not come into the Kings Presence because they will not submit themselves to those Ceremonies of Reverence accustom'd in this Palace. This, however, proved not to be the case and the Dutch submitted themselves without complaint to the ceremonies of the court when entering the presence of the Emperor, something later embassies, such as that of Lord McCartney and envoys were unwilling to do. The time it took for the negotiations allowed those in the embassy?s party plenty of time to observe the sights of the palace. Nieuhof was clearly impressed with what he saw saying that it "exceeds all the royal palaces in Europe for splendour, art, wealth and pleasure." In the descriptions of China the three religions of Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism are all mentioned. The religious traditions and beliefs are discussed separately as well as the different roles of their priests. Taoists are singled out in particular as responsible for exorcising people?s houses of devils and Buddhists are said to be the least regarded of the three religions. Religious ceremonies including funerals and exorcisms are discussed. Chinese printing is discussed at length; Nieuhof is impressed with the speed and technique of the Chinese printers, and compares it favourably with printing in Europe: ... they print with this board ... but with so much ease and quickness that one man is able to print 5000 sheets in a day. And in the boring of the boards they are so dexterous that they will cut out one almost as soon as an European compositor can make ready a form to the press. The position and role of women in China - both the "Tartar" and the "Chinese" women - are included. The book describes the Chinese practice of foot binding, something that is lacking in most early accounts of China. Nieuhof wrote that their: chiefest Beauty (as they imagine) consists in the smallness of their Feet; and therefore when they are young, they bind and swath their Feet, they keep them from growing to their natural bigness, and by that means they become generally very small. Nieuhof also mentions how the women are brought up to stay indoors and kept out of men?s sight. However the women in the illustrations are clearly outside and in the company of men. Nearly all aspects of life, from education, birthdays, marriage, dress, death and burial (including the practice of feng shui) are discussed, as well as class differences, which mentions mentioning beggars and entertainers as well as scholars and doctors. Chinese medicine and science are talked about and compared with European medicine, though no mention of acupuncture is found. Nieuhof also remarks on the frequent drinking of cha (tea) and the different ways of preparing it. The nature of the Chinese language, and the origin of characters are something that was highly debated in Europe in the seventeenth century. Kircher proposed that they originated from Egyptian hieroglyphs. One illustration depicts what was believed to have been earlier forms of the characters, this follows from the belief that all characters were originally pictographic in nature. The end of the second half of the book focuses on the history of China, beginning with early creation myths and going up to the present invasion by the Manchu. This was the first full account of Chinese history and drew heavily on Chinese historical sources. The engravings in Nieuhof's original Dutch edition were based on illustrations done by artists in China and contained around 150 illustrations. Ogilby had many of them copied for his English translation, although he included around a third fewer pictures. The titles of the illustrations were changed into English and the artists, such as Wenceslaus Hollar, who did the copying, added their own signatures in place of the original artists?. This was standard practice for the time. There are also around twenty-five illustrations in Ogilby's that were not included in the Dutch editions such as the Manchu lady. Some of these illustrations were sourced from the works of Athanasius Kircher.?

Christ's Certain and Sudden Appearance to Judgment [Signed in Ink by Thomas Vincent at the end of Vincent's preface "To The Citizens of London"]. By Thomas Vincent, Sometime Minister of Maudlins Milk=Street, London.

London, Printed for George Calvert and Samuel Sprint. 1669 - The Third Edition. He is referenced as a main character featured in "The Living," by Anthony Clarvoe, a play about 1665 plague London. Thomas Vincent, the second son of John Vincent and elder brother of Nathaniel Vincent (both also prominent ministers), was born at Hertford in May 1634. Mary Magdalene, Milk Street, London (he was probably ordained by the sixth London classis), and held it till the Uniformity Act of 1662 ejected him. He retired to Hoxton, where he preached privately, and at the same time assisted Thomas Doolittle [nonconformist minister] in his school at Bunhill Fields. During 1665, the year of the Great Plague of London, he preached constantly in parish churches. His account of the plague in God's Terrible Voice in the City by Plague and Fire, 1667, is graphic; seven in his own household died as a result of the plague. Subsequently he gathered a large congregation at Hoxton, apparently in a wooden meeting-house, of which for a time he was dispossessed. He was among the signers of the 1673 Puritan Preface to the Scots Metrical Psalter. He did not escape imprisonment for his nonconformity. He died on 15 October 1678, and was buried (27 October) in the churchyard of St Giles-without-Cripplegate. His funeral sermon was preached by Samuel Slater. (Wikipedia)

VOC overwinning op Celebes - Romeyn de Hooghe, 1669.

?Victorien der Nederl. Ge.oct.

Jacques & Gasper Anthoine, Amsterdam 1669 - Sea chart. Uncolored copperplate engraving. Image measures 19 7/8" x 22 3/4" This handsome sea chart by Pieter Goos depicts Ireland in its entirety, with the north oriented to the right. The chart also extends to parts of Scotland, England, and France. Also prominently featured are rhumb lines, scales, embellished tall ships, an elegant cartouche, and the harp crest for Ireland and the lion crest for Scotland. This map was published in Goos' "De Zee-Atlas Ofte Water-Weereld" and remains in its original uncolored state, which allows Goos' intricate line work to shine. It is in good condition with some foxing, soiling, and off-setting. Minor chips along border. Bottom of the center seam is separated. Pieter Goos (1616-1675) was a Dutch cartographer, engraver, publisher, printer, and print-seller based in Amsterdam. He belonged to a noted family of cartographers, headed by his father Abraham, who prepared plates for many maps published in the important atlases of the time. His pilot guide, the "Zee-Spiegel," provided some of the first charts of newly explored regions in the West Indies and Western Africa, and his "Zee-Atlas" is considered one of the best sea atlases of its time. This map is a classic example of Goos' high quality, visually appealing sea charts.

Sea chart of the western part of the Mediterranean Sea, including the peninsula. Pieter was the son of Abraham Goos, cartographer and engraver; he enlarged his father’s business and became one of the most famous engraver of sea charts in Amsterdam of the XVII century. Like Colom, Doncker and Jacobsz, he published a sea atlas, the Zee-Spiegel, deriving his work from the plates he was given by Jacobsz. The atlas has been then reissued in different editions and languages, and it was very famous among its contemporaries. Apart from publishing his Zee-Spiegel in the classical part I and II (Europe and Atlantic Coasts) and III (Mediterranean), he started a new tradition, publishing also parts IV and V, depicting routes for West Indies and West Africa. Copperplate, contemporary colour on the outlines, small abrasions, in general in good condition. Koeman IV, Goos 33-39 Dimensioni 520 400mm
