Ost- und West-Indischer wie auch Sinesischer Lust- und Stats-Garten

Nürnberg: Johann Andreæ Endter, 1668. Thick folio, engraved title, followed by title-page in red & black, envoi to German Emperor Leopold I with separate armorial frontispiece, 65 plates, with one textual illustration and the terminal Errata leaf; contemporary full pigskin with blind-embossed armorial stamps "Insigne Preposit Rayhradensis Ordinis S Benedicti" (with manuscript annotations from the Benedictine library on title-page), leather straps on brass clasps repaired but original, banded spine with early manuscript spine title. Everything exotic in the Indies. A monumental work on the East and West Indies and Asia; a splendid copy, in a well-preserved binding from a Benedictine library, of this work of exotic natural history by one of the most prolific authors of the seventeenth century. This ornate and lavishly illustrated book was a good companion to aristocratic collections of curiosities and Wunderkammern. The descriptions of natural history are interspersed with ethnographical musings, homeopathic advice on folk medicines and the history of European exploration and expansion, both actual and fabulous. The three books of this vast work treat of the natural history, the customs, and the curiosities of the East and West Indies, and the Americas, 'with many very curious details' (Sabin), as curious as speculations about which animal might triumph in a fight between a tiger and a dragon, the anatomy of mermaids and mermen, or the habits of the flying tortoises of China. One of its delights is the extraordinary series of detailed plates, including two views of Batavia (founded 1623) showing the harbour packed with junks, packets, and exclusively Dutch ships.Erasmus Franz (or Franciscus), was born in Lübeck in 1627 and died in Nuremberg in 1694. A polymath, he is best known for his indefatigable collecting of all sorts of folklore, natural history and ethnography; his massive studies, often published under coy pseudonyms, were bestsellers in seventeenth-century Europe. It is said that his career as a writer was forced upon him after he broke both his legs in a bad fall and so took a position with the publishers Endter. As the work itself shows, Franz was knowledgeable about ancient and modern voyages and travels alike. One of the most interesting aspects of this publication is the 6-page preface listing the 'works consulted', which shows that he was able to access an amazing variety of published and manuscript material. Thus, works such as Caesar's De Bello Gallico, the Jewish histories of Flavius Josephus or the work of Pomponius Mela are listed alongside German editions of Thomas Cavendish and Francis Drake, or Latin editions of Columbus, Vespucci, Desiderius Erasmus, and the Cosmographia of the cartographer Sebastian Munster.Because of the work's scope, it is frequently cited by histories and bibliographies of the period. Borba de Moraes, for example, marvelled that the 'bibliography is quite complete, and for Brazil contains a considerable number of the books published up to that time, with the exception of Portuguese works'.

(Cervantina) [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Amsterdam: Jacques Benjamin, 1668.. 241,[2]pp. Numerous in-text engravings. Small quarto. Later half vellum and marbled boards. Scattered dampstaining, else very good. The most complete and detailed contemporary account of the Anglo-Dutch war from 1664 to 1667, when the Treaty of Breda brought it to an end. This work was first published in Dutch in 1667, although this first French edition of the following year probably made the information much more generally available. It is of particular American interest for the description of the loss of New Netherland, giving an account of the capture of New York and the surrender of Netherland, of which this and the preceding Dutch version are the first published accounts. It also prints a list of vessels and goods captured by the British in America, and accounts of De Ruyter's voyage to the West Indies, affairs in Barbados, the war in Europe, and the capture of Surinam by the Dutch.

Vienna, M. Cosmerovius, 1668. - Folio. (16), 105, (3) pp. With folding engr. title page and 23 folding engr. plates by Matthäus Küsell after Ludovico Burnacini. Marbled half calf (c. 1900) with giltstamped title to gilt spine. This splendid work, published on the occasion of the formal opening of the Court Theatre in 1667, contains the libretto and stage designs of the eponymous opera, produced in honor of the marriage between Emperor Leopold I. and Infanta Margareta Teresia of Spain. The "Pomo d'oro" is considered one of the 17th century's most significant achievements of the musical stage; Burnacini's imaginative stage designs are known only through these illustrations, congenially engraved by Küsell. The two additional plates which Vinet mentions, depicting interior views of the auditorium, are not contained in any of the copies cnsulted for comparison; they were produced only after Küsell had completed the series and were added to a very small number of copies. As they are not mentioned by the printed table of plates (ff. B1r-B2v), the work may be considered complete thus. - Occasional browning and waterstaining; several plates with signs of old remargining and restoration; slight defect to one plate (some loss to image, retouched). Attractive, uncommonly well-preserved copy in comparison with the five copies sold at auction during the past three decades (four of which were incomplete, wanting the engr. title page or one of the 23 stage-designs). From the collection of the Viennese brewer Joseph Wuensch (1843-1916) with his bookplate and library label on the front pastedown. VD 17, 39:126553Z (two copies, collations agreeing with the present copy). Kat. der Ornamentstichslg. Berlin 4127 (as here). Vinet 669 (25 plates). Palau 230.777. Thieme/B. V, 264. AKL XV, 253.

Paris, Angot 1668. - 4to. 303 [recte: 305] pp., (23) pp., 127 pp., (1) p. With repeated printer's divice and many woodcut diagrams. Contemporary leather (spine renewed [using the original material], corners restored), spine gilt, gilt stamped title to spine. Third edition of the discours, édition originale de la Méchanique, 1st French edition of the theory of music. Guibert listed this edition of the Discours as being the third; he did not take into account the edition of 1657, which is only known through 2 examples. The first edition of the Discours le la methode published in 1637 - publication was anonymous, not least as a result of the sentence against Galileo of 1632 - which is acknowledged as being the first scientific-philosophic work written in French. It forms, at the same time, the basis for rationalistic mechanism in the 18th century as well as for later scientific models. By way of critical discussion of mainstream philosophical tradition in the Discours he presents the "individualist gesture" in contrast to this tradition: in the "World as a Book" the reflective individual finds the rules concerning this world and of thought. La Dioptrique, les Meteores, la Mechanique and also the theories of music are applications of the methodological discussion. In 1618 Descartes had written the compendium musicae for the mathematician Isaak Beekmann and had presented him with the manuscript, together with his request that he keep it a secret; he arranged for its first publication in 1650. Descartes is regarded as the founder of "rationalised theory of emotions "; music can create emotions (in this context he was preoccupied with the degree of consonants in the major third and syncopation), knowledge of musical theory allows one the possibility of being able to control these emotions. These aspects are then pursued in more detail in Passions de l'âme. Original end-papers preserved and bound in, new ones added. Front fly-leaf (old one) with old ownership entry. Slightly browned, some lvs. more heavily, minor spotting. A good copy. Guibert 18/4, 215 und 185/5; Tchemerzine IV, 312 (La Mechanique). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Experimenta circa generationem Insectorum ad Nobilissimum Virum Carolum Dati, 1671

FIRST LATIN EDITION OF FRANCESCO REDI'S MASTERPIECE REFUTING SPONTANEOUS REGENERATION, first published in Italian IN 1668 as Esperienze Intorno alla Generazione degl'Insetti (Experiments on the Generation of Insects). "A milestone in the history of modern science," Redi's book outlines the first series of experiments to disprove 'spontaneous generation' -- "a theory also known as Aristotelian abiogenesis. At the time, [the] prevailing wisdom was that maggots arose spontaneously from rotting meat"; in other words, that nonliving matter could generate the production of living organisms (Wikipedia). In his experiments, Redi captured maggots and waited for them to metamorphose, becoming flies. "Also, when dead flies or maggots were put in sealed jars with dead animals or veal, no maggots appeared, but when the same thing was done with living flies, maggots did" (Wikipedia). Redi compared two groups of meat: "the first left exposed to insects, and the second group covered by a barrier of gauze. In the exposed meat, flies laid eggs, which quickly hatched into maggots. On the gauze-covered meat, no maggots appeared, but Redi observed fly eggs on the outer surface of the gauze" (Benecke, A Brief History of Forensic Entomology). Knowing full well the terrible fates of out-spoken scientists like Giordino Bruno and Galileo Galilei, Redi was careful to express his new views in a manner that would not contradict to theological tradition of the Church; hence, his interpretations were always based on biblical passages, such as his famous adage: omne vivum ex vivo ('All life comes from life')" (Wikipedia). Francesco Redi was an Italian physician, naturalist, and poet; this work, as said, is the first Latin edition, the second edition overall. CONDITION & DETAILS: Amstelodami [Amsterdam]: Andreae Frisii, 1671. [14], 330, [28], 12 index, [1 Lector], 3. 38 plates total. (10 plates in-text, 28 bound at the end.

The siege of Candia by the Turkish forces. 1668. 497 mm x 365 mm. rather poor example, backed, with worm traces restored, numbered key suffering the most, with a few words just slightly affected, however overall fit for presentation on a frame.Extremely rare broadsheet of Candia being sieged by Turkish forces; the conflict between the Ottomans and a combined force of Venetian, French and Knights of Malta, begun in 1648 and would last until 1669, thus becoming one of the longest sieges in modern history. In May 1648 the Ottoman forces besieged the Venetian-ruled city, the Venetian responded attempting to blockade the Ottoman-held Dardanelles, disrupting the chain of supply of the Ottoman forces ?"not entirely successfully. The numerous naval engagements that followed had the Island go from one hand to another. The event here portrayed is one of the last, before the French army, not entirely destroyed but morally crippled, abandoned the region, leaving Captain Francesco Morosini alone, precipitating the defeat of the allied Christian forces. He surrendered to Ahmed Koprulu, Grand Vizir of the Ottoman Empire, in September 1669. The loss of Candia was amongst the greatest Mediterranean victories achieved by the Turkish forces in the 17th century. The lower part of the broadsheet has a numbered key to the most important parts of the plan and to help understand the reality of the engagement. Toley, Mapmakers, I, 114 (only mentioning two charts by him).
