        De viscerum structura exercitatio anatomica.

Giacomo Monti, Bologna 1666 - Very rare first edition, and a beautiful copy uncut in original boards, of this classic which includes Malpighi’s famous treatise on the kidney, De renibus premium, in which he described the uriniferous tubules as well as the ‘Malpighian bodies’, which have perpetuated his name. The book also includes the first description of Hodgkin’s disease "The great detail and clarity of Malpighi’s description was unsurpassed until Bowman [1842]" (Garrison-Morton). ?Norman 1427; Friedman 121; Pincus 175; Garrison-Morton 535 & 1230. "This collection of anatomical treatises contains Malpighi’s account of the Malpighian bodies (glomeruli) of the kidney (in ‘De renibus’), his observation of red blood corpuscles (in ‘De polypo cordis"), and the first description of Hodgkin’s disease (in ‘De liene’). Malpighi’s studies of the kidney gave support to his iatromechanical theory of glands as secretion machines; he concluded that the glomeruli were in direct contact with both arteries and veins, and postulated a similar connection between the glomeruli and urinary vessels. In his treatise on heart polyps, Malpighi demonstrated that the polyps consisted of coagulum found in normal blood; it was while examining a clot of coagulum under the microscope that Malpighi observed a number of red ‘atoms’ (corpuscles) in the interstices of the coagulum fibers" (Norman). 4to (247x179 mm), uncut in the original carta rustica boards, pp. [4], 1-172, a fine and fresh copy on thick paper, custom morocco box. "Very rare" (Norman). [Attributes: First Edition]

Docketed on back, "Grant of Easthampton to John Mulford 13 March 1666". 13 x 13 in. Old repairs at the folds, lower margin uneven. Docketed on back, "Grant of Easthampton to John Mulford 13 March 1666". 13 x 13 in. East Hampton Patent, 1666 for One of the Original Settlers of East Hampton. East Hampton, the easternmost town in New York and the first to be settled by the English, was originally inhabited by the Montaukett Indians, who sold off most of their land by 1660. After the English took over from the Dutch, Governor Nicolls issued patents confirming ownership of land held under grants from the Dutch authorities. These patents were written by Matthias Nicolls, secretary of the colony and later Mayor of New York City. One of the grantees, John Mulford, came to Southhampton in 1643, sold his house in 1648 and in 1649 was one of 9 persons who settled East Hampton.

Amsterdam, Waesberge, 1666..

Shaka hasso monogatari [trans.: Story of the Eight Phases of Shaka]

80 full-page woodcut illus. in the text. Eight parts in five vols. 8vo, orig. wrappers, three (of five) orig. block printed title labels on upper covers (covers rubbed), stitched as issued (stitching in 4th volume a little loose). Osaka: Heisuke Shioya, 1666. First edition to appear in Japan of the "Eight Phases of Shaka," the illustrated narrative of the eight pivotal life events of the historical Buddha; this is a most beautiful early book with eighty full-page woodcuts in the "kanazoshi" style. "Shaka" is the Japanese name of the historical Gautama Buddha. "Kanazoshi" is a type of printed Japanese book produced primarily in Kyoto between 1600 and 1680. The books are written in "kana" or a mixture of "kana" and "kanji" and include many kinds of texts: essays, stories, travel guides, and military chronicles. "The doctrines of Buddhism were frequently explained in works of this sort, where the intention was to instruct as well as entertain."-Chibbett, The History of Japanese Printing and Book Illustration, p. 232. The eight steps or phases are: 1. descending from Tusita Heaven; 2. entering his mother's womb; 3. birth; 4. taking religious vows; 5. subjugating demons; 6. attaining enlightenment; 7. turning the wheel of Dharma; and 8. entering nirvana or death. The masterly woodcuts, by an apparently anonymous artist, depict these steps in rich detail. Apart from the rubbing to the covers, a fine set. .

        Wund-Arztneyisches Zeug-Hauß. 2 Teile in 1 Band.

. Frankfurt, Joh. - The most complete illustrated account of surgical instruments, the methods of bandaging and splitting, and operational procedures of the period. Scultetus "Armamentarium" gives a good sidelight on the operations of the time through his interesting plates, representing such procedures as amputation of the breast, reduction of dislocations, etc. - cf. Garrison & Morton No.5571 (1st ed.); Zimmermann & Veith, Great Ideas in the Hist. of Surgery, 250-51, Walker p. 18. - Very rare - not in Cushing, Osler, National Lib. Medicine, Waller, and Norman.

NOVERINT UNIVERSI QUOD NOS FRANCISCUS AMELA.

Valencia, 1666 - . 29 cm. Segle XVII. Horta valenciana. Transaccions.         Regiones Inundatae. [Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire, Huntingdonshire, Northamptonshire & Lincolnshire]

Amsterdam: c 1666 - Size: 560 × 650 mm. Copperplate engraving in full original colour, partially heightened in gold. Fine condition. An unusual map of the 'Fenland' regions of East Anglia. The Fens are a naturally marshy region in eastern England. Most of the fens were drained several centuries ago, resulting in a flat, damp, low-lying agricultural region. This map encompasses Cambridge in the west to Kings Lynn and Boston (via Ely) in the east, to Peterborough in the north. The map is embellished with a rococo style mileage scale, a royal coat of arms, and a wonderful title cartouche in the lower right corner. The Atlas Mayor (the Spanish edition of the Atlas Maior) is the rarest edition of what De la Fontaine Verwey called "the greatest and finest atlas ever published". The Spanish edition was never completed. When fire destroyed the Blaeu printing house at the Gravenstraat in Amsterdam in 1672, the final volume was in the press and consequently lost. H. De la Fontaine Verwey, The 'Spanish Blaeu,' in Quaerendo 11 (1981), pp. 83-94.
