Very nice contemporary full mottled calf with five raised bands to richly gilt spine. All edges of boards gilt. Old owner's name to title-page (Cognel, 1741). A small marginal strip of paper to outer blank margin of title-page, far from affecting printing, and very discreet. A lovely copy with large margins. (16), 260; 31; 30 pp. + final blank. Woodcut initials and vignettes. Richly illustrated in the text and with five full page illustrations (all woodcut).. First edition of one of Descartes' most important works, his seminal "The World", which contains the fullest exposition of his philosophy, covering everything from method to metaphysics, astronomy, physics and biology. It is in this foundational work, written in the 1630'ies, that Descartes presents us with his corpuscular cosmology and explains the creation of the solar system and the heliocentric system in general. As the entire philosophy presented in the work is based upon the heliocentric view, it is no wonder that Descartes, after having heard of Galileo's conviction due to suspection of heresy, delayed publishing the book (see eg. his letters to Marin Mersenne), which then only appeared posthumously, in 1664."...he had given an account in "Le monde, ou Traité de la lumière" of cosmogony and cosmology as products simply of matter in motion, making the laws of motion the ultimate "laws of nature" and all scientific explanation ultimately mechanistic. This treatise remained unpublished in Descartes' lifetime. So too did the associated L'homme...He withheld these essays...and instead published his general system of physics...in the Principles of Philosophy in 1644." (D.S.B. p. 52). Beginning with doubting man's sensations and the relationship of these to the world around us, Descartes sets out to develop his view of the physical world. He establishes his laws of motion and the theory of the lack of void or empty space in nature. Having established these theories, Descartes can fully explain the nature of light, and he gives us the twelve properties of the behavior of light, all based on his belief that light travels instantaneously (of course also possible, since nature is without void).Brunet: 611; Norman 629

De Homine Figuris, et latinitate donatus a Florentio Schuyl.

Lugduni Batavorum (Leida), ex officina Hackiana, 1664, - in-4, pp. (36), 123 (mal num. "This book was the first attempt to cover the whole field of animal physiology. The work is really a physiological aoppendix to his Discourse on method." (Garrison-Morton).

Officina Hackiana, Leiden 1664 - Seven Exceptionally Detailed Scientific Letters; Autograph Drafts Very Extensively CorrectedDescartes, Rene (1596-1650). 4to. [36], 121 [i.e., 123], [1]pp. 10 engraved plates; overlay flaps present. Leiden: ex officina Hackiana, 1664. 205 x 160 mm. Vellum ca. 1664, title in ink on spine, a few tiny holes along hinges. Lower margin of title restored not affecting text, minor foxing and toning, but very good. 20th century bookplate of Dr. Robert Sonnenschein. Second Latin edition of the first European textbook of physiology, and "the first attempt to present systematically a coherent description of bodily responses in terms of actual—or hypothetical—neuro-muscular structures" (Fearing, Reflex Action [1964], pp. 18-28). In the first two parts, "On the bodily machine," and "How the machine moves itself," Descartes puts forth his theory of bodily automatism—the origin of the "machine man" or "robot" concept. Although he originally conceived De homine as a physiological appendix to the Discours sur la methode (1637), Descartes suppressed the work, together with his Le monde . . . (1664), after the trial of Galileo before the Holy Office (1633). What was heretical about Descartes’ views was his assertion that the body of man, like that of lower animals, could be understood as a machine, and that what distinguished man from lower animals was the presence of an immortal soul, the location of which Descartes argued was in the pineal body. More than any other physiological treatise, Descartes’ De homine first expressed concepts of neuro-muscular function which are acceptable in their major outlines to present day physiologists. Descartes is usually credited with making in De homine "the first descriptive statement of involuntary action which bears a recognizable resemblance to the modern concept of reflex action" (Fearing). Other historians, such as Brazier, in The Historical Development of Neurophysiology, definitely credit Descartes with the invention of the reflex concept, although his first use of the actual term "reflex" appears in the Traité des passions de l’âme (1649).

This immense compilation—which, in the course of expounding its theme, divulged a vast number of cures which Boyle had come across and tried—was to prove his most extensive medical work and it was widely cited in the debates on medical practice of the time. Boyle also wrote extensively on the application of science more generally, and some sections of these writings were to be published as the second section of part 2 of Usefulness in 1671 (ODNB). Agustín, the respected history of his order in Michoacan. He was also an accomplished student of the Matlatltzinga language, leaving unpublished (until the 20th century) several manuscripts. Basalenque's remains in the Convento de Santa María de Gracia in Valladolid (now Morelia), Mexico.

Although educated at a Jesuit school, and preparing for an ecclesiastical career, he eventually converted to Protestantism and from 1687 worked as a civil law notary in Nuremberg. He soon turned to engraving and cartography in 1702 he founded his own publishing house.Homann acquired renown as a leading German cartographer, and in 1715 was appointed Imperial Geographer by Emperor Charles VI. Giving such privileges to individuals was an added right that the Holy Roman Emperor enjoyed. In the same year he was also named a member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin. Of particular significance to cartography were the imperial printing privileges (Latin: privilegia impressoria). These protected for a time the authors in all scientific fields such as printers, copper engravers, map makers and publishers. They were also very important as a recommendation for potential customers. In 1716 Homann published his masterpiece Grosser Atlas ueber die ganze Welt (Grand Atlas of all the World). Numerous maps were drawn up in cooperation with the engraver Christoph Weigel the Elder, who also published Siebmachers Wappenbuch.Homann died in Nuremberg. He was succeeded by the Homann heirs company, which was in business until 1848. The company was known as Homann Erben, Homanniani Heredes, or Heritiers de Homann abroad.

Milano: Lodovico Monza 12mo. [4] ff., 193, [1] p., [1] f.. 1664 Rodolfo Acquaviva (a.k.a., Ridolfo Aquaviva), nephew of Claudio Acquaviva the fifth Superior General of the Society of Jesus (1581–1615), after his Jesuit novitiate was ordained a priest in 1578 at Lisbon and sailed for India. Arriving in India he taught at the Jesuit school (Saint Paul's College) in Goa, founded by St. Francis Xavier and the site of the first printing press in India. In 1580 the Mughal Emperor Akbar the Great summoned him to his court and thus began Acquaviva's mission to the Mughal empire. His was, in fact, the first Jesuit mission there. As Prof. Emerita Frances W. Pritchett of Columbia University writes on her great website (http://www.columbia.edu/itc/mealac/pritchett/00islamlinks/ikram/part2_12.html): "Of all the aspects of Akbar's life and reign, few have excited more interest than his attitude toward religion. . . . [H]e built the Ibadat Khana, the House of Worship, which he set apart for religious discussions. Every Friday after the congregational prayers, scholars, dervishes, theologians, and courtiers interested in religious affairs would assemble in the Ibadat Khana and discuss religious subjects in the royal presence." It was to these discussions/conversations/debates that Acquaviva was invited. The religions represented were many, the major participants including Muslims, Jews, Catholics, Hindus, Jains, and Zoroastrians. After several months Acquaviva felt his contributions to the debates insufficient to justify continuing as part of the mission and left the task to fellow Jesuits. Returning to Goa his missionary work led him to the Hindu Kshatriyas of Salcette, south of Goa, which proved a fatal decision. Prior to his arrival, the Jesuits with the aid of Portuguese troops had destroyed some temples there; the Cuncolim Revolt of July, 1583, was partially a result of those actions and it was in the revolt that => Acquaviva and the four companions alluded to in the title of this work were murdered. The author of this biography was a major Jesuit historian of the Society's activity in Asia. He was the author of the monumental Istoria della Compagnia di Gesu (1650–1673) in 6 folio volumes, Della vita e dell'istituto di S. Ignatio, fondatore della Compagnia di Gesu (1650), L'Asia (1653), Il Giappone, parte seconda dell'Asia (1660), La Cina, terza parte dell'Asia (1663), L'Inghilterra, parte dell'Europa (1667), L'Italia, prima parte dell'Europa (1673), and biographies of Jesuits Vincenzo Caraffa (1651), Robert Bellarmine (1678), Stanislas Kostka (1678), Francis Borgia (1681), and Niccolo Zucchi (1682). Also of interest are his works on science: Della tensione e della pressione (1677), Del suono, dei tremori armonici, dell'udito (1679), and Del ghiaccio e della coagulatione (1682). This is the second edition of Bartoli's account of Acquaviva and his mission, following the first of the previous year. Searches of NUC, WorldCat, and COPAC locate just two copies of the 1663 edition, both in the U.S., and similarly only two copies of the 1664 (one in Germany, one at Oxford). Late 18th-century quarter vellum over light boards covered with green paper. Undeciphered 17th-century ownership inscription on title-page. Waterstaining, at times significant, at others barely visible. => A sound copy with no worming or tears.
