Basilika: The Workes of King Charles

1662. CHARLES I.Basilika: The Workes of King Charles, The Martyr. With a collection of Declarations, Treaties, And other Papers concerning the Differences Betwixt His said Majesty and his Two Houses of Parliament.London: Printed by James Flesher for R. Royston, Book-seller to His Most Sacred Majesty, 1662.First folio edition of the works of King Charles I—the enormously popular (and vainly suppressed) testament to the executed monarch?'s political principles and spiritual devotion—the first edition directly approved by Charles II, beautifully printed with three magnificent double-page copper-engraved plates, engraved frontispiece (by Hollar) and title page, handsomely bound by Mansell. In late 1647, with tensions between Charles I and Parliament mounting, the king fled from Oliver Cromwell and the army. In November, he escaped "to the Isle of Wight, where he seems to have expected that Colonel Hammond, the governor of Carisbooke Castle, would protect him… Hammond, however, was faithful to his trust, and Charles became a resident, and before long a prisoner in the castle" (DNB). The next year, he would be tried and executed. "A few hours after the King's execution, his Eikon Basilike was in the hands of the people… So marvelous was its effect, that contemporary authorities declare that nothing but the Government's ingenious and persistent condemnations of the work prevented an immediate restoration of the crown"(Almack, 3). "Charles' posthumous campaign of persuasion was perhaps the most successful he ever waged… By the end of the first year of the Commonwealth, 'The King's Book' was everywhere, showing up like an irrepressible phantom, even in miniature editions designed for concealment" (Schama, History of Britain II:177). "The work is a masterpiece in its expression of Charles' principles… and by making a martyr of this Stuart king, [it] exercised a considerable influence on English history" (Kunitz & Haycraft, 212), helping prepare the way for the 1660 Restoration of Charles II. This collection features the first royally sanctioned printing of the Eikon Basilike. Directly approved by Charles II and licensed exclusively to London printer Richard Royston, this majestic and wide-margined folio printing was seen as the finest production of the late king's writings.Almack 61.         Les memoires de messire Philippe de Comines

A La Haye: Ches Arnout Leers, 1662. Fine. Ches Arnout Leers, A La Haye 1662, In-12 (9,5x16cm), (49) 600pp. (14), relié. - New edition edition which is due to Denys Godefroy. It is illustrated with two portraits of Louis XI and the Duke of Burgundy, and a leaflet table. Binding in full vellum nineteenth environment. Smooth spine with cold title. Mors split tail of 6 cm.

Louis & Daniel Elzevier, Amsterdam 1662 - In-16 (75x133 m). 8 ff. n. ch., 622 pp., 4 ff. n. ch. Willems, Les Elzevier, n°1281, p. 325; H. FOR ARREST OF JUDGMENT, (HAD HE NOT BEEN INTERRUPTED AND OVER-RULED BY THE COURT) AND HIS BILL OF EXCEPTIONS. WITH OTHER OCCASIONAL SPEECHES, &c. ALSO HIS SPEECH AND PRAYER, &c. ON THE SCAFFOLD

[London]. 1662.. [3]-134,[1]pp. Small quarto. Modern three quarter black calf and cloth, spine gilt. Lightly tanned, an occasional small stain. Final four leaves repaired with some sixty words (in whole or in part) in facsimile. Final leaf mounted. Trimmed close, occasionally affecting pagination in upper margin. Good overall. First and only edition, the Frank Deering copy, with his gilt leather bookplate on the front free endpaper. Henry Vane was born in England in 1613, came to New England in 1635, and was elected governor of Massachusetts the following year, aged only twenty-three. Deeply religious, Vane was among the most radical of Puritans. He supported Anne Hutchinson during the Antinomian crisis, and became a close ally of John Cotton. Vane's stay in Massachusetts was tempestuous, and he returned to England in 1637 to become a member of the Long Parliament, though his interest in New England continued. Vane was instrumental in procuring the Rhode Island charter, and his friendly efforts to aid the New England colonies were appreciated by Roger Winthrop and Roger Williams. Soon after the fall of Cromwell and the restoration of the monarchy he was imprisoned for two years, convicted of treason, and executed. Lowndes says "THE TRYAL was written by a Sectarist in favor of Vane and printed by stealth." The text contains the speech he had intended to speak from the scaffold (but was forbidden by court order) which would have elaborated his revolutionary ideas on parliamentary supremacy and the compact between ruler and ruled, issues that resounded in colonial American history for more than the next one hundred years.

“In this work, the author propounds some interesting theories on the different types of mentality in man, and the cause of these differences.”

Sanson d'Abbeville Nicolas [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

1662. EVELYN, John. Sculptura: or the History, and Art of Chalcography and Engraving in Copper. With an ample enumeration of the most renowned Masters, and their Works. To which is annexed, A new manner of Engraving, or Mezzo Tinto, communicated by his Highness Prince Rupert to the Author of this Treatise. [32], 148, [4] pp. With an allegorical frontispiece after a design by Evelyn, one full-page engraving in text, and one folding mezzotint by Prince Rupert plus three additional engraved fold-out plates of plant cross-sections from a seperate work. 8vo., 158 x 98 mm, bound in early twentieth-century English speckled calf , gilt, panelled spine, red morocco spine labels, a.e.g. London: Printed by J.C. for G.G. Beedle and J. Collins, 1662. |~||~||~||~||~||~| First Edition, the first book to mention the mezzotint process, and containing the first mezzotint published in England. It was through John Evelyn and his Sculptura that the mezzotint process came to be highly regarded as a technique of the graphic arts in England. The mezzotint by Prince Rupert is a detail of his "The Great Executioner," first published in Frankfurt in 1658 after a painting by Ribera. Although Prince Rupert showed Evelyn "his instruments and described his processes, still Evelyn has by no means followed suit, as he very carefully abstains from saying anything which would betray the secret in the smallest degree. As some excuse he says, `I did not think it necessary that an art so curious...was to be prostituted at so cheap a rate as the more naked describing of it here would too soon have exposed to it.' Nevertheless, Evelyn's book will always be precious because it is the first book illustrated with a mezzotint print, and that a very excellent one" (Davenport, Mezzotints pp. 43-44). Some occasional spotting, first quire browned, the mezzotint with full white margin, though some chips at far edge, front joint repaired, frontispiece reattached. PROVENENCE: Florence Foerderer Tonmer, with her bookplate on the front paste-down. Keynes, Evelyn 33. Harvard, Hofer Bequest 34. Cicognara 258.

        CLAVASIUM VULGO CHIVASSO

- MAGNIFICENT ENGRAVED WALL MAP (41 2/8 x 56 6/8 inches; framed size: 50 x 65 4/8 inches). Superb and extremely rare engraved wall-map of Asia, with traces of original hand-colour (extensively restored, with loss to the right hand border, affecting the title, New Guinea and the dedication, the principal areas of the map largely intact, relaid on modem linen, on stretchers). This map is THE LARGEST MAP OF ASIA PUBLISHED BY A MEMBER OF THE 'LAFRERI SCHOOL', and of the greatest rarity, POSSIBLY ONE OF TWO KNOWN COPIES. AN ITALIAN DERIVATIVE OF THE IMPORTANT AND INFLUENTIAL MAP OF ASIA PUBLISHED BY ORTELIUS, and described by Schilder as "a work of the utmost importance. because of [its] advanced geographical information". ORTELIUS' VERSION IS KNOWN IN ONLY A SINGLE SURVIVING EXAMPLE. Ortelius compiled his wall-map from Giacomo Gastaldi's maps of the three parts of Asia which, Ortelius complained, could not be joined to form a single map. Gastaldi, in turn, drew heavily from the work of the Arab cartographer Ismael Abulfeda, without crediting his source, the subject of another of Ortelius's complaints. Ortelius's version was first published in 1567, and then republished by the Venetian publisher Donato Bertelli. Four examples of this printing are known. The plates subsequently passed to one 'StefanoScolari', probably Stefano Mozzo Scolari, who republished the map, with his imprint inserted, in 1655 and 1662. Burden refers to only two complete sets of the four continents, one in the University of Texas, Austin with the map of Asia apparently dated 1655, and one in a private collection, dated 1662. This is a further example of the 1662 state. Gastaldi, "Cosmographer to the Venetian Republic, then a powerhouse of commerce and trade. He sought the most up to date geographical information available, and became one of the greatest cartographers of the sixteenth century" (Burden). Giacomo Gastaldi was, and styled himself, 'Piemontese', and this epithet appears often after his name. Born at the end of the fifteenth or the beginning of the sixteenth century, he does not appear in any records until 1539, when the Venetian Senate granted him a privilege for the printing of a perpetual calendar. His first dated map appeared in 1544, by which time he had become an accomplished engineer and cartographer. Karrow has argued that Gastaldi's early contact with the celebrated geographical editor, Giovanni Battista Ramusio, and his involvement with the latter's work, "Navigationi et Viaggi", prompted him to take to cartography as a full-time occupation. In any case Gastaldi was helped by Ramusio's connections with the Senate, to which he was secretary, and the favourable attitude towards geography and geographers in Venice at the time. His "La Discrittione dell prima parte dell'Asia - Il Disegno Della Seconda Parte Dell'Asia - Il Disegno Della Terza Parte Dell'Asia", about which Ortelius complained, are three maps that represent elements of an intended colossal map of Asia, a project so ambitious that it was never realised, though geographically they are based on the small-scale maps Gastaldi previously made of the continent for Giambattista Ramusio's ‘Navigationi et viaggi’.       Ulm, Georg Wildeisen, 1662.. 1011 S., 27 Bl.

Cologne: Johann Busaus, 1662. Very good. 24mo. [16], 224 pp. With an engraved title-page and two engravings in the text (see below). Contemporary, no doubt original, polished vellum, endpapers excised (?), spine lettered in contemporary MS. A pocket-sized Baroque book on death and dying, illustrated with three curious engravings. The allegorical "Vanitas" engraved title-page depicts a well-clad gentleman facing a skeleton with his scythe, below which a cherub sits between a skull and an hourglass. The engraving on *8v presents a "Caritas" scene in which peasants and beggars are given food and drink, while the deceased ascends into heaven accompanied by an angel. The engraving on H8v depicts a dark bedroom, in which a man on his death-bed is adminstered extreme unction by two priests, attended by family members who kneel and pray at the foot of his bed. "With the publication in 1620 of the successful pamphlet 'De arte bene moriendi,' it became clear that its author, Roberto Bellarmino, was a mainstay in ascetical literature. Concerned by the drama of salvation, the Jesuit theologian developed a pedagogy of death in which human life has to be governed in a Christian manner as to have a happy [i.e. peaceful] death. Dominated by the concept of sin, the teaching of Bellarmino identifies the Church as the only guarantee of salvation. In this context, his 'De arte bene moriendi,' […] explains the manner in which to prepare oneself: the individual can not redeem himself only at the end of his earthly existence, or convert for fear of divine justice, but he must be ready to rendezvous with death in a state of grace. Departing from the traditional treatises of the 'ars moriendi,' the work of Bellarmino assimilates the art of well dying to the inner conquest of well living […]. According to Bellarmino, those who wish to well die, must live well, as it can be seen by comparing the condition of those who learned the art of well dying, and who will have a happy passing away, and those who ignored the art of living well, and who are doomed to a miserable death." (SOURCE: Stefano Zen, "Roberto Bellarmino e l'arte di ben morire: 'Qui cupit ben mori, bene vivat.'" In: Chronica Mundi, 2011, Vol. 1, no. 1, p. 79, abstract).
