ENGLAND'S WORTHIES. SELECT LIVES OF THE MOST EMINENT PERSONS

1660. Very Good. WINSTANLEY, William. ENGLAND'S WORTHIES. SELECT LIVES OF THE MOST EMINENT PERSONS FROM CONSTANTINE THE GREAT, TO THE DEATH OF OLIVER CROMWELL LATE PROTECTOR. London, Printed for Nath. Brooke, at the Sign of the Angel in Cornhill, 1660. First edition. Engraved title-page frontispiece with each of the forty-seven worthies shown in a medallion portrait. Printer's device on title-page. Collation: A8,a8,B-2R8,2S4. 16.5 cm. [32],613, pp. + [19] publisher's advertisement. In an early full leather binding, which is rather parched and edgeworn. The first two signatures have a shallow inkstain at the top margin which decreases over 32 pp. It occasionally covers a few words in the top line of type; however, because the ink is transparent, it doesn't completely obscure the type. There are some leaves near the end which show some very faint dampstainging; but the text is clean for the most part. A few pages are misnumbered. Very good overall. (Wing W3058). Winstanley (1628?-1698), better known by his pseudonym of 'Poor Robin' as a writer of almanacs and chapbooks (D.N.B.), was a compiler with a dubious reputation who 'borrowed without stint, and without acknowledgment also, from his predecessors' (Wood, Athena Oxon. ed. Bliss, iv. 763). Despite his poor reputation, 'we are obliged to him for many notices of persons and things which are recorded only in his works' (Granger, Biogr. Hist. of Engl. 5th ed. v. 271). England's Worthies is noteworthy because, though Winstanley was a staunch royalist after the Restoration, it is free from partisan spirit (Brydges). Rare.

A fine Dutch-language edition of the most comprehensive illustrated guide to seventeenth century France. Merian, the father of engraver Matthäus the younger, and the grandfather of the painter, engraver and naturalist Maria Sibylla Merian, was born in Basel Switzerland. After a period when he visited and lived in Nancy (France), Paris and Stuttgart, and after working for Theodore de Bry for a while, he married in 1618 and settled in Frankfurt. From here he issued a great many engravings including various topographical series accompanied by text by Martin Zeiler, which together form an invaluable record of Europe during the first half of the sixteenth century. The present work, published in Amsterdam at the time of and shortly after Merian's death, is a Dutch- language version of Zeiler and Merian's Topographia Galliae, oder Beschreibung und Contrafaitung der vornehmbsten und bekantisten Oerter in...Frankreich. first published in Frankfurt between 1655 and 1661.         Carmagnoli ingenomen in 1691 Door Syn H.t den P.r Eugenius Van Savoye / Carmagnoli prise en 1691 par S. A. S. Eugene de Savoy.

Incisione in rame all'acquaforte, cm 51,5 x 84,5 (alla lastra) pi? margini. In basso a ds.: Tom. Ottima.

[The Motions of the Three Outer Planets] Theoriatrium superiorum planetarum

Amsterdam: Jan Jansson, [1660]. Copper-engraved celestial map, with full original colour. Centerfold re-inforced at base. 19 3/4 x 23 inches. . One of the finest and most decorative celestial charts ever produced, from the first edition of Cellarius This chart is from the Harmonia Macrocosmica seu Atlas Universalis et Novus (Harmonious Universe or New and Universal Atlas) by Andreas Cellarius, the finest celestial atlas ever produced. It demonstrates the Ptolemaic theory of epicycles. The epicycles theory addressed a problem that arose from the assumption that if the Earth was the center of the universe, then the circuit of the planets should be of a steady one-directional, circular progress. Observation showed, however, that the orbital progress of the planets was in fact irregular, and from these observations arose the ancient theory of epicycles illustrated here. It is a beautiful image, timeless in the abstract harmony of colour, shape and composition, and also a record of the restless search of the human mind to apprehend order in the universe. This chart was engraved during the greatest era of Dutch map-making, in 1660, by Johannes Janssonius of Amsterdam. It was reprinted by Janssonius in 1661, and again in 1708 by Gerard Valk and Petrus Schenk, who added their names to the plates. Andreas Cellarius was born in about 1596 in Neuhausen, a small town near Worms in the Rhine-Hesse region of Germany. From 1625 to 1637 Cellarius worked as a schoolmaster in Amsterdam and The Hague, and in 1637 moved to Hoorn, where he was appointed as headmaster or rector of the Latin School. He published a number of works during his lifetime, but the last and greatest was the Harmonia Macrocosmica. Cellarius resigned from his post as headmaster in early 1665 and died in Hoorn in November of the same year. Koeman, Atlantes Neerlandici, Cel. 1

        Græcia antiqua. Edidit Samuel Pufendorf.

Amsterdam, Apud Joannem Janssonium. 1660. Oblong-4to. Contemporary full calf, spine with traces of wear. (8), 62, (2) pp. With 31 fullpage engraved maps and 7 textual engravings. Title-page neatly restored and first 4 pages with repairs in lower right corner not affecting text. With the bookplate of H. Coyet-Torup in Sweden.. Rare and charming atlas of Ancient Greece with maps by Lauremberg, edited by Pufendorf. Lauremberg is most famous for his maps of ancient Greece. He never himself visited Greece, but was familiar with the work of the great mapmakers of the age and was influenced by Mercator and Ortelius. Most expositions of Pufendorf overlook the fact that the famous Heidelberg-professor not only worked within the fields of law and history of law, but that he was also very much engaged in philology and classics. In fact, Pufendorf taught classes and gave lectures on philology at in Heidelberg, and he also been involved in publications in this field, namely as the editor of works by Lauremberg and Meursius. As such, Pufendorf came to be connected to an important and long philosophical tradition at the Heidelberg University. The present charming and well executed atlas thus stands at the centre of this subject field of Pufendorf.Johannes Laurenberg (1590-1658) was a mathematician born in Rostock in Germany. He was a professor of poetry in Rostock and after that professor of mathematics in Sorø, Denmark, where he worked till he died. In 1631 the Danish King Christian IV commissioned Laurenberg to do the mapping of Denmark. For the next 16 years he worked on this project and corresponded with the king. The work was never finished, though, and in 1645 the king lost his patience and fired Laurenberg. In 1647 Janssonius published his Atlas Novus, which contained two maps from Denmark in high quality. It is most likely that Laurenberg drew these maps. See Bramsen, pp. 68-72. Shirley II, p. 1557

The Book of Common Prayer [London, 1662] [with:] The New Testament, London 1660 [with] The Whole Book of Psalms, London 1661. Bound together in a contemporary "sombre" binding

London: Henry Hills and John Field 1660 NT; London: Bill & Barker 1662 BCP; 1661 Psalms London: Henry Hills and John Field, 1660 (NT); [London: Bill & Barker, 1662] (BCP); 1661 (Psalms). (BINDING) 8vo. Woodcut of the Royal Arms of Charles II on verso of final leaf of the Common Prayer. Contemporary black morocco "sombre" binding, elaborately tooled in blind on upper and lower covers with a central lozenge cartouche made from double impressions of two separate tools, the same tools being used to decorate the four corners, the design surrounded by floral sprays, spine of six raised banks with floral tooling in each of the seven compartments, inner gilt dentelles, marbled endpapers, a.e.g. Front joint repaired, skillful minor restoration to the corners by Sotheran, overall a very attractive binding. Lacks first three leaves of Book of Common Prayer. Herbert 669 or 670 (with OT); Griffiths 1662-1663.3 . A handsome volume, made even more interesting by the contemporary ownership inscription "Elizabeth Maynard 1663" on the verso of the New Testament title page, and, in her handwriting on the blank recto of the Psalms, "What Children I have christened [there follows a list of nine names] Innocents day 1665" plus additional notations of subsequent christenings in 1665 and 1667. As the "Children" included a Mrs Cooper, it may be that the word is used in an ecclesiastical sense; and it is interesting to conjecture what role Elizabeth Maynard played in the ceremony in these years following the Restoration of 1660

Bellissimo esemplare nell'insieme. "Especially rare [and] perhaps the most curious of Kircher's publications" (Sotheran). ""Iter extaticum is one of Kircher most curious works. He rejected the Aristotelian and Ptolemaic cosmologies in favor of that of Tycho Brahe (1546-1601). The Tychonian system was adopted by most of Kircher's fellow Jesuits, since it allowed them to maintain geocentric orthodoxy while expousing, at least in part, the new, more scientific heliocentricity advocated by the Copernicans. Kircher broaches this subject more directly in the second dialogue, where he deals with the creation of the earth"" (Merril).
