Nora Samolad eller Uplyste Lapland | Nora samolad sive Laponia illustrata.Uppsala, 1701. 4to. With an engraved frontispiece, botanical woodcut folding plate, engraved map of the Baltic Sea in the form of an old man, and a woodcut plate showing a bird. Contemporary mottled, tanned goatskin, gold-tooled spine.

Cat. Linnean Soc., p. 663; Pritzel 7870; cf. "Life of Linnaeus", in: The Linnaean correspondence ( http://linnaeus.c18.net/Doc/lbio.php). First edition, of the first and only published part of a comprehensive work on the natural history of Lapland by Olof Rudbeck the younger (1660-1740), one of the professors of Linnaeus at Uppsala. It is the first part (of the planned 12), covering the region of Uppland on the eastern coast of Sweden, with the text in Swedish and Latin on facing pages.Rudbeck joined an expedition to Lapland in 1695, and returned with extensive botanical and zoological specimens, notes and drawings. Unfortunately most of these perished in the terrible fire of 1702 which destroyed three-quarters of Uppsala, leaving Rudbeck unable to finish his work. Many of the copies of the present first part were destroyed in the fire as well. Many years later "he invited Linnaeus to live in his house as tutor to his four youngest sons, with opportunities to use his rich library. ... He used his time diligently, beginning in Rudbeck's house the works later published as Bibliotheca botanica (1736), Critica botanica (1737), Genera plantarum (1737), Classes plantarum (1738), ... Thus by the age of 24 Linnaeus had laid the foundations for all his later work" ( The Linnaean correspondence ). During this time Rudbeck convinced Linnaeus to go and do research in Lapland himself as from a natural history point of view this region was almost completely unknown. This expedition led to his Flora Lapponica (1737) in which Linnaeus' ideas about nomenclature and classification were first used in a practical way.A couple pages with waterdamage in the outer margins, some occasional spots, margins of the frontispiece slightly thumbed. Some minor, professional restorations to the spine. A good copy.

Fronde].

\"This new evidence consisted in a plate found in one of the editions of Panciroli`s work mentioned above, representing the interior of a Frankfort printing-office in the year 1660, as indicated by the Roman numerals at the head. M. Madden points out, that in the background are two compositors at work without copy or copyholder (visorium), and explains this by the presence in the right hand top corner of a figure holding a manuscript, which, M. Madden assumes, he is reading aloud to the compositors ...\" (Bigmore/Wyman II, 112 ausführl.). Versand D: 15,00 EUR Wissenschaft, Naturwissenschaft, Geisteswissenschaft, Lexikon, Enzyklopädie

      - London: Printed for H: Cripps and are to be sold at his shop in Popes-head Allie and by E: Wallis at the Hors shoo in the Old Baley, 1660. Seventh edition. Half-title (recto), The Argument of the Frontispiece (verso), engraved title-page (frontispiece), dedication page, Democritus Junior ad Librum Suum [4], 1-78, [6], 1-218, [4], 219-723pp., The Table [9]. Mispaginated between pp.137&140, 189&190, 575&579, but collates as per ESTC R27243. Full-page folio. 30X20cm. This was the first edition to be published in London, save the variant of the sixth edition (1652), and only the second to include all of Burton's revisions and additions (many of which were discovered after his death in 1640). Much more than a medical treatise, Burton's apparent omnium-gatherum is in fact a cannily ordered literary work that manages to parody everything from humoral psychology to the Ramist method of discourse and causality itself, using paradox to undermine many of the very premises on which it seems to be based. Not only did the Anatomy influence Milton, Sterne, Swift, and the Romantics, but its rhetorical strategy inspired Melville, Whitman, and such twentieth-century innovators as Borges. Northrop Frye defined it as a "creative treatment of exhaustive erudition." Bound in contemporary calf with fillet in blind. Expertly rebacked very early on, with original (or very early) endpapers. Hinges cracked but holding firm, with joints still thoroughly intact. First and last few leaves browned and brittle. Half-title and title remargined. One corner of prelim leaf repaired, with loss of only 7 or 8 words from the final few lines of Democritus Junior ad Suum Librum. Text with sporadic marking in old pencil and moderate damp-damage to foot of textblock between pp.551-581. "Bought of Josepth Bloxi by John Allington 1671" along with a short notation from 1728 on front pastedown. "Nemo saltat sobrius" in old pen to rear pastedown. Remarkable copy in original binding, from the library of Peter Cary (son of British novelist Joyce Cary). [Attributes: First Edition]

Willem Janszoon Blaeu also abbreviated to Willem Jansz. Blaeu, was a Dutch cartographer, atlas maker and publisher. Blaeu was born at Uitgeest or Alkmaar. As the son of a well-to-do herring salesman, he was destined to succeed his father in the trade, but his interests lay more in Mathematics and Astronomy. Between 1594 and 1596 as a student of the Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe he qualified as an instrument and globe maker. In 1600 he discovered the second ever variable star now known as P Cygni. Once he returned to Holland, he made country maps and world globes, and as he possessed his own printing works, he was able to regularly produce country maps in an atlas format, some of which appeared in the Atlas Novus published in 1635. In 1633 he was appointed map-maker of the East Indian Company. He was also an editor and published works of Willebrord Snell, Descartes, Adriaan Metius, Roemer Visscher, Gerhard Johann Vossius, Barlaeus, Hugo Grotius, Vondel and the historian and poet Pieter Corneliszoon Hooft. He died in Amsterdam. He had two sons, Johannes and Cornelis Blaeu, who continued their father's mapmaking and publishing business after his death in 1638. Prints of the family's works are still sold today. Original maps are rare collector items. The Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer of Delft (1632-1675) holds a position of great honor among map historians. Several of his paintings illustrate maps hanging on walls or globes standing on tables or cabinets. Vermeer painted these cartographical documents with such detail that it is often possible to identify the actual maps. Evidently, Vermeer was particularly attached to a Willem Blaeu - Balthasar Florisz van Berckenrode map of Holland and West Friesland, as he represented it as a wall decoration in three of his paintings... Though no longer extant, the map's existence is known from archival sources and second edition published by Willem Blaeu in 1621, titled "Nova et Accurata Totius Hollandiae Westfriesiaeq. Topographia, Descriptore Balthazaro Florentio a Berke[n]rode Batavo". Vermeer must have had a copy at his disposal (or the earlier one published by Van Berckenrode). Around 1658 he showed it as a wall decoration in his painting "Officer and Laughing Girl", which depicts a soldier in a large hat sitting with his back to viewer, talking with a smiling girl who holds a glass in her hand. Bright sunlight bathes the girl and the large map on the wall. Vermeer's gift for realism is evidenced by the fact that the wall map, mounted on linen and wooden rods, is identifiable as Blaeu's 1621 map of Holland and West Friesland. He captures all of its characteristic design, decoration, and geographic content." His maps formed the bulk of the Atlas Maior, that became a collector's item in Amsterdam. One of Blaeu's globes was purchased at auction by Maarten Magielse, a Dutch salesman, for the record price of 60.000 euro, about $80.000. Magielse is now renting it to the globe museum in Vienna, where it is being exhibited. (Wikipedia)

First. hardcover. very good(+). Short thick 4tos (9.25 x 7.5 inches). 3 volumes, handsomely bound in full contemporary mottled calf; elaborately gilt-stamped spines with red & black labels and raised bands; marbled endpapers, all edges red. [30], 776, [24]; [24], 784, [28]; [18], 790, [12] pages. The books cover the first three decades -- the period from 1492 to 1514 (subsequent decades were never translated). Some light foxing throughout, as usual; small personal bookplates on pastedowns and faint blue library stamps on each title page; spines are coated and have a shine that the boards do not, but still an attractive and complete copy of this important work on the history of the New World. Paris: Nicolas & Jean de la Coste, 1660 & La Veuve Nicolas de La Coste, Francois Clouzier et Pierre Aubouin, 1671. First editions. The first Spanish book of this magnitude on the history of the New World. Antonio Herrera y Tordesillas (1559-1625) was the first royal historian of the West Indies, and his position gave him unusual access to official sources and other documents. This ambitious work covers New World history -- the voyages of Columbus and Vespucci, the discovery of the South Sea, conquests by Cortes and others in Mexico, and the institutions and customs of the early civilizations in "New Spain" before the arrival of Europeans, border disputes with the Portuguese, etc. Translated from Spanish (1601-1615), this is the first French edition of this important book, and a cornerstone of early Americana. Bibliographers usually reference these works separately as they are very rarely found together.       - Amsterdam, J.J. Schipper, 1660. First Dutch edition. Folio (377 x 237 mm), six parts in one volume; pp. 8,194; 8, 179, 1, 56; 181, 3; 8, 152; 39, 1. With 4 beautiful allegorical engraved title pages and 250 full-page fine engraved plates by Matthias Merian. Engraved head-pieces (Nissen, 1951). Contemporary mottled calf. Professional rebacking of hinges incorporating original spine. Spine with six raised bands and gilt decorations. The preliminaries of some sections in the Dutch edition are misbound. An Amsterdam copy on thick paper without age browning in a contemporary dark leather binding, very rare in this condition. Jonston (1603-1675), born in Poland of Scottish ancestors, was an assiduous compiler and published numerous works. He was a physician, practising medicine at Leiden for several years. His Historiae Naturalis appeared in instalments at Frankfurt between 1649-1662. It was reprinted in its entirety at Amsterdam in 1660. The work has four main parts: Part one, mammals with 80 plates; part two, fishes with 48 plates, one more than in the Latin edition, depicting the sea unicorn, with an extra leaf of text; a sub-part of part two with other sea animals including 20 plates; part three birds with 62 plates; part four insects with 28 plates; a sub-part of part four with snakes and dragons including 12 plates. Jonston's compilations are usually full of images. The latter are the real pleasure of these books today. They include fabulous beasts such as the unicorn, phoenix, mermaid and dragon. Apparently Jonston could not or would not distinguish between the creatures haunting the misty but always accessible regions of human imagination and those roaming in sunlit but uncharted regions of the real world (Dance, 1978). The Dutch edition was presented by the Dutch East India Company in 1663 at Decima to the Japanese ruler Shogun Yoshimune, and it became the only source of knowledge on Western zoology in Japan until 1750, when a Japanese compilation was published. Provenance: Inscription in Indian ink on frontis pastedown: "Desen boek behoort toe aan L .Salms de Lorge". Nissen, Schöne Fischbücher, 1951, 82; Dance, 1978. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

World map - Frederick de Wit, 1660.

"Nova Totius Terrarum Orbis Tabula'. Copper engraving made by Frederick de Wit "t Amsterdam in de Calverstraat inde Witte Pascaart 1660, published in De Zee-Atlas Ofte Water-Wereld of Hendrik Doncker in Amsterdam from 1660 to 1670. With original hand colouring. Size: 47 x 56 cm (plus margins). This was De Wit"s first world map. He derived it from the two hemisphere maps from Blaeu"s wall map of 1648, reducing them in scale and making some changes. (Bleau's own smaller world map with two hemispheres can be found here.) The upper corners contain northern and southern celestial maps and the lower corners show north and south polar projections. In the bottom center are astronomical diagrams -- a geocentric one on the left and a Copernican one on the right. The top center vignette shows the sun encircled by a zodiacal ring. Between the maps and diagrams are four vignettes with allegorical depictions of the Four Elements (air, fire, earth and water). The map also includes Baroque decorations of garlands of fruit and flowers.A magnificent example of the art of mapmaking, this map is one of only 19 reproduced in color in Rodney Shirley"s major scholarly work on world maps of the 15th to 17th centuries. In accompanying text, the author states that "[e]specially when richly coloured, De Wit"s map is one of the most decorative standard-size maps of the time and it is much less commonly found than his three other atlas world maps.'Frederick de Wit (1630-1706) was founder of a prominent map publishing firm in 17th century Amsterdam, the golden age of Dutch cartography. The De Wit family both published their own atlases and supplied maps to other cartographers such as Hendrik Doncker.Reference: Rodney Shirley (1983)- "The Mapping of the World: Early Printed World Maps 1472-1700', p. 421, plate 311.Price: € 11.500,- (incl. frame).

        Russia antique map - Blaeu.

Russiae, Vulgo Moscovia dictae, Pars OccidentalisMap of Russia with original hand colouring. Size 49,1 x 38,9 cm. Published by Joan Blaeu in Amsterdam around 1660, as part his world famous Atlas Maior.A finely engraved depiction of the area from Estonia to Moscow. The map is very decorative, with pictorial topography, wildlife and a scene of men hunting bears in the upper part of the map. The decorative cartouche is flanked with moose and reindeer. Also this map is based on the travel journal of Isaac Massa from 1610.Isaac Massa (1586 - 1643) was a Dutch grain trader, traveller and diplomat, the envoy to Muscovy, author of memoirs witnessing the Time of Troubles and the maps of Eastern Europe and Siberia. Massa's experience in and knowledge of Muscovy transformed him into a Dutch "Kremlinologist"'.Massa is credited with five published maps of Russia and its provinces, the last ones compiled around 1633, and two maps of Moscow city. Retrieving original muscovite maps could have been dangerous for Massa himself and fatal for his Russian sources. Massa's rendition of the Siberian coast represented an advance in geography and for decades remained the only map of this region. It was subsequently copied by Dutch publishers Gerard Mercator and Henricus Hondius, Jan Janssonius and Willem Blaeu.Blaeu's Atlas Major in its various editions was the largest atlas ever published. It was justly famed ("the greatest and finest atlas ever published"' - Koeman) for its production values, its high typographic standard, the quality of its engraving, ornamentation, binding and colouring. Blaeu"s atlas frequently served as the official gift of the Dutch Republic to princes and other authorities. It is one of the most lavish and highly prized of all seventeenth century illustrated books. The maps are embellished in the Baroque style, and many rank among the most beautiful ever made.Price (excl. VAT): € 850,-.

Ductor dubitantium, or the rule of conscience in all her generall measures; serving as a great instrument for the determination of cases of conscience.

London: Pr. by James Flesher for Richard Royston Folio (32 cm, 12.6"). 2 vols. I: Add. engr. t.-p., [6], xl, 559, [1] pp.; 1 plt. II: [2], 558, [2] pp.. 1660 First edition: Important philosophical treatise on conscience, casuistry, and Christian ethics, written by the Bishop of Down and Connor. The controversialist Taylor, crowned "the Shakespeare of divines" by Ralph Waldo Emerson, was the subject during his career of a number of accusations of crypto-popery, but the present work — the first of its kind — was designed as a "complete protestant answer to the many Roman Catholic manuals of casuistry" (according to the Oxford DNB online) and intended to provide an authoritative Anglican reference on the subject. The portrait of the author was engraved by Pierre Lombard, while the added engraved title-page is unsigned. Each of the four books here (in two volumes) has a separate title-page; the main title-pages are printed in black and ruled in red. The text is in English, Greek, and Latin. A printed addenda slip is affixed to the final text page of vol. II, above the catalogue of books sold by Richard Royston. Leaf L6 in vol. II is a cancel (and separated). Provenance: Vol. I added title-page recto with inked ownership inscription dated 1781 ("T. Moore"); vol. II front fly-leaf with inked ownership inscription dated 1696 ("Guilel. Rayner") and another (of "T. Moore's") dated 1781. Recent quarter calf and marbled paper–covered sides, leather edges tooled in blind, spine with gilt-stamped title and volume labels and gilt-stamped decorations between raised bands. Ownership inscriptions as above. First few leaves of vol. I (including regular and added title-pages) with tiny spots of worming; slightly larger sections of same to inner margins of some subsequent leaves; a number of pages in both volumes with scattered spots of worming, touching letters but not affecting sense. Light waterstaining to outer margins of some leaves. One leaf in vol. II separated. => Significant and attractive.

NICE COPY. PICTURES AND MORE DETAILS ON REQUEST. Zuvor niemals also gedruckt.

[Attributes: Hard Cover]

[Attributes: Hard Cover]

Parker pretium 10d.' >at head of title-page. A very rare issue of the first printing. Wing E.2314A (locating only the BL copy in U.K.). ESTC adds Manfield Coll. With the Restoration the book of rates was substantially revised in favour of the Crown on a wave of pro-Royalist verve.         [The Motions of the Three Outer Planets] Theoria trium superiorum planetarum

Amsterdam: Jan Jansson, 1660. Copper-engraved celestial map, with full original colour. Centerfold re-inforced at base. One of the finest and most decorative celestial charts ever produced, from the first edition of Cellarius This chart is from the Harmonia Macrocosmica seu Atlas Universalis et Novus (Harmonious Universe or New and Universal Atlas) by Andreas Cellarius, the finest celestial atlas ever produced. It demonstrates the Ptolemaic theory of epicycles. The epicycles theory addressed a problem that arose from the assumption that if the Earth was the center of the universe, then the circuit of the planets should be of a steady one-directional, circular progress. Observation showed, however, that the orbital progress of the planets was in fact irregular, and from these observations arose the ancient theory of epicycles illustrated here. It is a beautiful image, timeless in the abstract harmony of colour, shape and composition, and also a record of the restless search of the human mind to apprehend order in the universe. This chart was engraved during the greatest era of Dutch map-making, in 1660, by Johannes Janssonius of Amsterdam. It was reprinted by Janssonius in 1661, and again in 1708 by Gerard Valk and Petrus Schenk, who added their names to the plates. Andreas Cellarius was born in about 1596 in Neuhausen, a small town near Worms in the Rhine-Hesse region of Germany. From 1625 to 1637 Cellarius worked as a schoolmaster in Amsterdam and The Hague, and in 1637 moved to Hoorn, where he was appointed as headmaster or rector of the Latin School. He published a number of works during his lifetime, but the last and greatest was the Harmonia Macrocosmica . Cellarius resigned from his post as headmaster in early 1665 and died in Hoorn in November of the same year. Koeman, Atlantes Neerlandici, Cel. 1.
