. . VD17 23:641786Y; HKJL II, 407. - Schweizer Postkonto vorhanden. **

        Secundi Epistolae et Panegyricus

Amsterdam: Elzeviriana (Elsevier), 1659. "Editio Nova" (New Edition), annotated/edited by Marcus Zuerius van Boxhorn (Latinized to Boxhornius on the title page), who had died 6 years earlier. Boxhorn was an important linguist before it was a separate science; he was the first to propose the existence of Proto-Indoeuropean, which he called Scythian. This is a 16mo volume with rather small type, bound in full vellum with a leather title piece. Good plus; the vellum is warped so that the front cover has begun to separate, and the front pastedown is torn. Has all-edge gilt but the top is quite dull. 404 pp. + index. Owner's names on the obverse of ffep and facing page; one of these has left a note, "collates perfect". (I didn't check.) The text is free of any writing or foxing.. Hard Cover.

THE HISTORY OF THE CHURCH,

      - from our Lord's incarnation, to the twelfth year of the Emperor Mauricius Tiberius, or the Year of Christ 594. As it was written in Greek by Eusebius Pamphilus, Bishop of Casarea in Palestine; Socrates Scholasticus, native of Constantinope; and Evagrius Scholasticus, born at Epiphania in Syria Secunda. Made English from that edition of these historians, which Valesius published at Paris in the years 1659, 1668, and 1673. Also, the Life of Constantine in four books, written by Eusebius Pamphilus; with Constantine's Oration to the Convention of the Saints, and Eusebius's Speech in praise of Constantine spoken at his Tricennalia. Valesius's annotations on these authors are done into English, and set at their proper places in the margin; as likewise a translation of his account of their lives and writings. Pp. [ii]+20+[36](contents)+700+[22](indices), most text double column, 2 large folding maps [of Persia and the Roman Empire], the main title page printed in red & black, indices; f'cap. folio; contemporary blind tooled calf boards, lightly worn (heavier at corners), with early repairs to edges, and a few small surface chips, rebacked, with modern dark brown leather spine decorated in blind between raised bands, and gilt lettered red leather title label; new endpapers; the title page (which is chipped and torn at edges) neatly reinserted on a recent backing sheet, several small edge chips or splits with occasional neat paper repairs, a few tiny wormholes and a couple of small scorch marks, scattered light foxing, occasional creasing and soiling (including a few small ink blots and damps spots); printed by J. M. for Awnsham and John Churchill, London, 1708; 1709. Second edition. Lowndes p. 763. *Three early church histories in one volume, first published thus in 1683. Based on the esteemed translation of the French philologist and classical historian Henricus Valesius, or Henri Valois (1603-1676), Lowndes describes this as the best edition of 'the best English translation' (the first edition did not contain the maps, the chronological index of Popes and Emperors, or the 'observations' on the maps by E. Wells). Eusebius (c. AD262-340) was a protege of the Emperor Constantine, and in 314 became Bishop of Caesarea. Known as 'the father of ecclesiastical history', his History of the Christian Church, completed in 324 or early in 325 is his most notable work. The Greek historian Socrates of Constantinople, also known as Socrates Scholasticus, was born c. AD380. His church history continued the work of Eusebius, but gave more emphasis to the the role of the Emperor in church affairs, and also included some secular history. Evagrius Scholasticus (c. AD536 -594 or later) studied and practised law in Syria, under the patronage of the Patriarch of Antioch. His ecclesiastical history extended the earlier work of Euseubius and Socrates Scholasticus, covering the period from the Second Council of Ephesus in 431 to the twelfth year of reign of the Emperor Maurice.

Mosaicall philosophy: grounded upon the essentiall truth or eternal sapience

London: Printed for Humphrey Moseley,, 1659. Written first in Latin, and afterwards thus rendred into English. Folio (272 × 185 mm), in 2 parts, part 2 with separate dated title page on leaf R4r. Twentieth-century half morocco, unlettered, marbled sides and endpapers. Lacks initial blank. Woodcut title vignettes, woodcuts in the text. Neat ownership inscription and faint inkstamp of the Scottish folklorist Rev. J. B. Mackenzie, Minister of Kenmore 1872-1911, at head and blank fore-margin of title. Trimmed a little close at head, very occasionally shaving the headline, minor dampstaining at extreme lower edge of first few leaves, a very good copy. First English edition of Fludd's last work, Philosophia Moysaica, the Latin version published posthumously at Gouda in 1638, the English translation said to have been Fludd's own work, an "explicit, detailed and highly organized Neoplatonist-Cabalist-alchemical interpretation of the universe" (Huffman, William, Robert Fludd and the end of the Renaissance, London: Routledge, 1988, 105). "Fludd was a devoutly Christian Neoplatonist, or, as he would call himself, a Mosaical Philosopher, since he begins with what he believes to be infallible principles delivered from God directly to Moses and his followers. Since he made some unique contributions to his grand synthesis of knowledge, over and above what was formulated originally by the Renaissance Florentine Neoplatonists, he felt justified in calling his philosophy 'Fluddean' as well as Mosaical" (Huffman, 104). The work includes Fludd's defence of his position on the weapon-salve, the Paracelsian doctrine that a wound could be cured by anointing the weapon which caused it with a mixture of the patient's blood and various other morbid materials. "He quotes examples of the efficacy of the cure, including one performed by himself on one of his brother-in-law's servants, and argues that the cure is neither superstitious nor magical, but natural. He argues for the unity of the spiritual and physical worlds, for which he was able to cite much evidence in common experience (quoting liberally from Gilbert's recent work on the magnet), and does so in a traditional (syllogistic) way; as a result, the tract reads as sober, reasonable, and often witty" (ODNB).

Miscellaneum Hyperbolicum, et Parabolicum: In quo praecipue Agitur de Centris Graitatis Hyperbolae, Partium Eiusdam

Venice: Joannem La Nou, 1659. - Stefano degli Angeli (1623-1697) entered the Order of the Gesuati of Saint Jerolamen. At twenty-one, he became a reader of literature, philosophy, and theology in the faculty of his order at Ferrara, but left three years later for health reasons and went to Bologna. At the University of Bologna, under the guidance of Bonaventura Cavalieri (1598-1647), he developed a strong interest in mathematics. Cavalieri was so appreciative of his abilities that he entrusted Angeli with the task of correcting and publishing his last work, Exercitationes geometricae sex (1647). Angeli was offered the opportunity to succeed Cavalieri as professor of mathematics, but turned it down. After various appointments, he became in 1663 professor of mathematics at the University of Padua, a post that had been held by Galileo, and he remained there until his death. Riccati was one of his pupils. Angeli's mathematical works were on infinitesimals, which he used to study spirals, parabolas and hyperbolas. While in Venice, he published the present work, as well as De infinitorum parabolis (1654), De infinitorum spiralium spatiorum mensura (1660) which contains a generalization of Archimedes' spiral, and De infinitorum cochlearum mensuris ac centris gravitatis (1661) which carries out Torricelli's intention of finding the centre of gravity of a solid body called a cochlea. At Padua, he examined fluid statics based on Archimedes' principle and Torricelli's experiments. He published Della gravita dell aria e fluidi in 1671. Small quarto. . [8], 215, [1] pp. Numerous woodcut diagrams in text. Late nineteenth century vellum over decorative boards, gilt cloth spine label. Title-page lightly foxed, light dampstain at lower corner through part of the text. Bottom corner of V1 torn away and reinforced with new paper. Book location label on front pastedown. A very good copy. First edition of a scarce mathematical text.
