Whereunto is added one book containing philosophical and prudential rules how man shall become excellent in all conditions, whether high or low, and lead his life with health of body and mind. Fit for the use of those that practise physick, and all others that desire to search into the hidden secrets of nature, for increase of knowledge. FIRST ENGLISH EDITION 1658. Covers slightly stained and slightly worn at corners, hinges rubbed and a little tender, tiny chip to leather at top of upper hinge, old inscription at foot of original front endpaper, title page slightly dusty, small crease to top corner of first 5 leaves, as in other copies A4 (last leaf of Preface) is a cancel and slightly uneven at fore-edge, small closed tear to 1 lower corner, repaired, not affecting text, 1 upper outer corner torn off, no loss of text, tip of another corner missing, a few small rusty marks, mainly to margins, no loss of legibility. A very good tight copy of the scarce English first edition. First published in Latin in Antwerp in 1559 in two books, it was reissued in 1564 enlarged to 4 books. It was enormously popular on the continent of Europe translated into Italian in 1560 and into French and German in 1567 and 1575. Although it continued to be reissued in Latin well into the 17th century it was not translated into English until 1658. Levinus Lemnius or Lemmens (1505-1568) was born at Zirickzee in the province of Zeeland in the Netherlands. At first he studied theology, then medicine under the famous anatomist Vesalius. He graduated at Padua in 1525 and then practised medicine successfully in his native town. He was a friend of Dodoens and Conrad Gesner. This work was his most famous and important, a Book of Secrets with large sections on medical matters and natural history: procreation and birth, medicinal plants, influence of the moon on plant growth, epilepsy, sleepwalkers, sleeping with an open mouth, the benefits of wine drinking, alcoholism, healing power of gemstones. In addition he is very interested in the occult and extraordinary natural phenomena, miraculous happenings, monsters and monstrous births. The final section, the Exhortation, beginning on page 315 deals with religious and moral topics. Ferguson, Bibliotheca Chemica, Volume II, page 23; Ferguson, Books of Secrets, Index, page 22; Krivatsy, 17th Century Books in the National Library of Medicine, page 701, No. 6873; Wellcome Library, Volume III, p. 489. London: Printed by Thos. Warren, 1658. First edition. Folio. Title-page in red and black, engraved frontispiece portrait, 14 engraved plates (all but two double-page), and 30 engravings, all but one full-page (Dance of Death half-page), and one small mounted portrait of Sir Philip Sydney, by Wenceslaus Hollar. Wing D2482; Pforzheimer 341; ESTC R16413; Upcott, pp. 694-698 . "With the spectacle close at hand of the great church slowly deteriorating from years of maltreatment and sacrilegious use, Dugdale rapidly compiled The History of St Paul's Cathedral, which was published in 1658. Not only did this book print the surviving documentary records of the cathedral, it also preserved the appearance of the building. Its Norman and Gothic details and the alterations made by Inigo Jones in the 1630s were recorded in extensive plates, once again prepared by Hollar, several of them based on drawings made by William Sedgwick in 1641. With the destruction of the cathedral in the great fire of 1666 Dugdale's book became the lasting memorial of old St Paul's." - DNB

Lee, A. Crook, D. Pakeman, H. Twiford, G. Bedell, T. Dring, J. Place, 1658. [xii], 772 [i.e. 720], 12 pp. Folio (11-1/4" x 7"). Contemporary calf, blind rules to boards, raised bands and lettering piece to spine. Light rubbing to extremities, minor stains and scratches to boards, corners bumped and lightly worn, skillful repair to front hinge near head of spine, hinges cracked but secure, rear endleaves lacking, later armorial bookplate (of the Marquess of Headfort) to front pastedown. Light toning to a few leaves, interior otherwise fresh. * Only edition. In this work Wingate outlines the essentials of the common law and its "reason" through maxims organized under the following headings: "Theology," "Grammar," "Logick", "Personall Things," "Law," "Morality" and "Wife." Some examples: "To such laws as have warrant in holy scripture, our law giventh credence," "the law delighteth in apt expressions," "Personall things cannot be done by another," "The law esteemeth and judgeth of all things according to their nature and quality" and "The husband is the woman's head." D. Justiniani, Sacratissimi Principis, Institutionum, sive Elementorum, libri quatuor, Notis perpetuis multo, quam hucusque, diligentius illustrati, Curo & studo Arnoldi Vinnii I. C. Editio postrema ab Auctore recognita

Amstelaedami, Ex Officina Elzdeviriana, 1658. 12mo, 133 x 71 mm.s, pp. [xxiv], 643 [644 - 646 blank], with fine additional engraved title-page, with the Elzevir device as vignette on the printed title-page, contemporary red morocco, gilt-ruled border on each cover, spine richly gilt in compartments, all edges gilt; slight wear to base of spine, but generally a very good and attractive copy, with two early, probably contemporary hand-written ownership labels on the front paste-down end-paper: "Jullienne" and "J. B. Q. Malaclie." It would be pleasant to think that the first label and autograph is that of the art collector Jean de Jullienne (1686 - 1766). Arnoldus Vinnius (1588 - 1657) was one of the leading jurists of Europe in the 17th century, and this commentary on Justinian is his most important work. His commentary on Justinian, with the text, was first published in 1642, and this was the first edition to be published after his death. In his autobiography, My Own Life, David Hume noted that his "Family [had] a Notion that the Law was a proper Profession for me: But I found an unsurmountable Aversion to every thing but the Pursuits of Philosophy and general Learning; and while they fancyed that I was poring over Voet and Vinnius, Cicero and Virgil were the Authors which I was secretly devouring."

See A Bibliography of English Conjuring 1581-1876 by Raymond Toole Stott page 191. "...In Italy, in the latter half of the sixteenth century, came a striking example of the difficulties which science still encountered even after the Renaissance had undermined the old beliefs. At that time John Baptist Porta was conducting his investigations, and, despite a considerable mixture of pseudo-science, they were fruitful. His researches in optics gave the world the camera obscura, and possibly the telescope; in chemistry he seems to have been the first to show how to reduce the metallic oxides, and thus to have laid the foundation of several important industries. He did much to change natural philosophy to a vigorous open science. The society founded by him for physical research, called themselves Otiosi (i.e., Men of Leisure) and made it a condition of membership that each man must have contributed a new discovery or fact in natural science. Their Accademia Secretorum Naturae was soon suspect, from its name and deeds, of dabbling in the occult. Della Porta was denounced to Pope Paul V and called to Rome to explain the reports of witches' salves and necromantic arts. Happily justifying his devout search for truth and his campaign against charlatans, he returned cautioned but unblemished and was able, later in life, to help establish and become Vice-President of the Academy of the Lynxes (its name symbolised the struggle of scientific truth against ignorance), of which Prince Federico Cesi was President and Galileo the most illustrious member". Notes taken from encyclopaedia. The date on the title page has a dropped 5 which at first glance looks like a 9, but is without doubt a 5. The name of the printer confirms this, as the printer changes to John Wright in the 1669 edition. MORE IMAGES ATTACHED TO THIS LISTING, ALL ZOOMABLE. POSTAGE AT COST.

From the evidence of the printer's ornaments used in this last work which also appear in The Practice of Physick it seems that it was printed by Peter Cole, but we have been unable to ascertain in what form it may have been issued previously. Despite the erratic nature of the collation, this work is complete. Lacun¾ in both signatures and pagination are always justified by catchwords and the continuity of the text. Traitté de l'aiman. Divisé en deux parties. La prémiére contient les expériences; & la seconde les raisons que l'on en peut rendre. Par M. D***.Amsterdam: chez Henry Wetstein, 1687.

First edition of this beautifully illustrated treatise on the magnet and its uses, dealing with the invention of the compass, magnetic mountains in America, declination and the orientation of the compass-needle in a magnetic field. The plates are etchings by Adriaan Schoonebeek (1658-1705), the pupil of Romeyn de Hooghe and a prolific book-illustrator. They recall Sébastien Le Clerc's Pratique de la geometrie (Paris, 1669), where geometrical diagrams float above fanciful landscapes. In D'Alencé's plates, however, though most of the landscapes and rustic scenes seem unrelated to the scientific content, one or two provide a commentary. For example, fig. 18, illustrated by Hofer, shows a violent explosion with bodies flying in all directions, which Hofer suggests illustrates the magnet's potential.

The finely engraved frontispiece is described by Park Benjamin, in his Intellectual Rise in Electricity (London, 1895), as follows. "The lodestone, disposed in a bowl after the mode suggested by Neckam and Peregrinus, and marked with a longitudinal directing line, appears floating in front of the vessel, which the mariner, holding a rudder in one hand and a compass in the other, is about to board. The goddess, who appears to be advising him, points to the Great Bear, represented by the actual animal in the heavens, with the Pole Star situated at its tail, and also to a compass and a dipping needle, while in her left hand she has a sounding line. The idea evidently intended is that the divinity is advising the sailor to avail himself of all these means of guidance. There is also shown on the left a suspended armed lodestone, supporting at one pole a series of keys, and at the other a number of iron plates "this being possibly designed to indicate in some way the strength and consequent trustworthiness of the magnet."

Very little seems to be known regarding Joachim D' Alence (1640-1707); even his name is variously given as Dalance, Dalence, Dalence, etc., by different authorities. He is known almost solely because of the present work and his Traittez des barometres, thermometres, et notiometres, au hygrometers (Amsterdam, 1688), a companion volume also charmingly illustrated by Schoonebeck and important because it contains the first suggestion of the use of two fixed temperatures in the graduation of thermometers.

Second and third editions appeared in 1691 and 1712, and a German translation in 1690.

Brunet 5, 918; Gartrell 10; Wheeler Gift 200; Hofer, Baroque Book Illustration 142.. 12mo (154 x 88 mm), pp. [xx], 140, [8] with 33 plates by A.
