Vom Kriege. Hinterlassenes Werk. 3 Bände. (= Hinterlassene Werke des Generals Carl von Clausewitz über Krieg und Kriegführung, Bde. 1-3).

      8. XXVIII, 371 (1) VI, 456 S., 1 Bl. VIII, 386 S., HLdr.-Bde. d. Zt. m. etw. Rückenverg., goldgepr. Rückentiteln u. dreiseitig gespränkeltem Farbschnitt. Erstausgabe.

***** Second edition. A rare treaty of astronomy, quoting Copernic and Tycho Brahé, written by a royal engineer and cartographer from Normandy. Complete copy with the beautiful folding plate "Sphère plate universelle" and 4 others plates and a tab. In-4. [177 x 128 mm] Collation : (8), 175, (1), 65 pp., 5 planches h.-t. et 1 tabl. Vélin.       1651. London, 1651. Only edition. Cromwell Refused to Grant a Pardon H[all], J[ohn] [1627-1656]. [Hinde, John, Attributed]. A Gagg to Love's Advocate: Or, An Assertion of the Justice of the Parlament in the Execution of Mr Love. London: Printed by William Du-Gard, Printer to the Council of State, 1651. [iv], 22 pp. Quarto (7" x 5-1/2"). Stab-stitched pamphlet bound into later three-quarter calf over marbled boards. Light rubbing to extremities with negligible wear to spine ends and corners. Large copperplate arms of the Commonwealth to title page, woodcut head-pieces and decorated initials. Moderate toning to text, dampstaining to head of text block, title page soiled and edgeworn, worming to lower margin of text block, edgewear to a few leaves at beginning and end of text, small chips to heads of final three leaves with minor loss to text. Two miniscule annotations in later hand to head of title page, small recent owner stamp to rear pastedown, interior otherwise clean. A solid copy of a scarce title. $950. * Only edition. Hall was a poet employed as a pamphleteer by Cromwell. He was, in other words, a propagandist for the Commonwealth. A Gagg to Love's Advocate defends the recent execution of Christopher Love [1618-1651], a controversial Welsh Protestant preacher and advocate of Presbyterianism. He was convicted of treason when the Commonwealth learned that he was communicating with the exiled Stuart court with the goal of restoring the Stuart monarchy. He went to his death as a martyr of the Presbyterians, who petitioned in vain to secure his pardon. Cromwell denied these petitions because we wished to suppress dissent among the Presbyterians. OCLC locates 6 copies in North America, none in law libraries. A few sources, most notably Wing's Short-Title Catalogue, suggest an attribution to John Hinde. The ESTC does not offer an attribution, though most scholarship indicates that Hall was the author. English Short-Title Catalogue R206702.

***** Second edition. A rare treaty of astronomy, quoting Copernic and Tycho Brahé, written by a royal engineer and cartographer from Normandy. Complete copy with the beautiful folding plate "Sphère plate universelle" and 4 others plates and a tab. In-4. [177 x 128 mm] Collation : (8), 175, (1), 65 pp., 5 planches h.-t. et 1 tabl. Vélin. (Reliure de l'époque.).

London: typis Du-Gardianis; impensis Octaviani Pulleyn in Coemeterio Paulino, 1651. 1st Edition. Hardcover. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. 4to (220 x 155 mm). [28] 301 [3] pp. Signatures: pi4 (pi1 blank) a4 B-2S4 (blank 2S4), 167 of 168 leaves (lacking first blank), errata on 2S3v. pi2, etched title; pi3, printed title with woodcut device; woodcut headpieces and initials. pi2, the etched title-page, is here bound as a recto and the stub of the blank pi1 is between pi3 and pi4. Contemporary sheep, gilt ruled sides and spine (head and tail of spine and joints repaired, corners worn, surface of leather pitted). Text browned throughout but the etched title-page clean and in good impression, worm holes and tracks in the lower margins just touching the lower rule border of the etched title-page, small hole in leaf S1 affecting two letters, light dampstains at lower margin toward the end. Provenance: Old ink signature on printed title-page scored through; library of Walter Pagel (ownership mark to front pastedown). ----Norman 1011; Keynes 34; Wing H1091; ESTC R17816; Garrison-Morton 467; Wellcome III, p. 219. First edition. Harvey's second great contribution to physiology, this is one of the classics of embryology. The problem of generation was a much more difficult one than the circulation of the blood. It occupied Harvey for most of his life and in the end it was not susceptible to a full solution in his time. The great contributions of this book were however of huge significance. Harvey's doctrine that every living thing comes from an egg; his insistence on epigenesis as opposed to preformation of the embryo; and his rejection of spontaneous generation are only three of the ten of Harvey's achievements in this book identified by Needham (History of Embryology, pp. 149-50). In addition, the last part of the book is a treatise on gynaecology and obstetrics drawing on Harvey's own practice which though celebrated in Herbert Spencer's 1921 Harveian Oration, seems to have been little discussed since then. The famous and often reproduced engraved title, unsigned but attributed to Richard Gaywood (c. 1630-1680), shows the figure of Jove taking the top off a large egg, out of which escape a flurry of small creatures. On the egg is the legend Ex ovo omnia, everything from an egg, the central pillar of Harvey's theory of generation. It was probably Gaywood who also etched a portrait of Harvey that was originally intended for the book but which was suppressed before publication. (On the etched title-page and portrait see Keynes, Life of Harvey, pp. 332-334 and plates XXVIII and XXIX.). R. Gaskell, Books from the Library of Walter Pagel, Pt. 2, 84. Very Good.

Obelisco Panphilio Gia nell'Ippodromo di Ant Caracalla.../...Scoperta li 12 di Giugno 1651 Parte Occidentale & Parte Orientale

Etching and engraving, 1651 circa, signed at bottom left 'Louis Rouhier Sculpsit', and inscribed under the caption at top of the image: 'Gio Iacomo Rossi formis Romae alla pace con licenza de superiori'. From the series "Nuova Raccolta degl'obelischi et colonne antiche dell'alma città di Roma" edited by G. Giacomo De Rossi, Rome 1651. Magnificient proofs, printed on contemporary laid paper, with watermark "encircled fleur-de-lys", with margins, in very good condition. These prints showing the Gian Lorenzo Bernini's Fountain of the Four Rivers with the Pamphili Obelisk seen from west and from east; elegantly dressed figures in Piazza Navona looking at the monument. Harvey is quoted in the text, as is Girolamo Fabrici, whose pioneering anatomical investigations of the circulatory system inspired Harvey. Franzosi, a doctor of medicine and philosophy and convinced Aristotelian, wrote this treatise in opposition to the anatomists of the Accademia Neoterica of Verona. Franzosi was part of the circle of Peripatetic philosophers that included his teacher Cesare Cremonini, Galileo's friend and adversary.Franzosi was also the author of several works on prophecy, divination, dreams, and the faculty of imagination. He adopted many of the ideas of Girolamo Cardano and Agostino Nifo. He also wrote a brief work of the therapeutic properties of viper venom.Keynes (third edn) p 123 and Life of Harvey p 454; Thorndike VI pp 511-14; Krivatsy 4326; OCLC records Huntington and NLM for North America, BN (Fr), Nuremberg, and Berlin

Leviathan, or the Matter, Forme, & Power of a Common-wealth Ecclesiastical and Civill.

London: for Andrew Crooke, at the Green Dragon in St. Paul's Church-yard,, 1651. Small folio (295 x 180 mm). Contemporary mottled calf, covers with an elaborate geometrical blindstamp decoration, rebacked, spine ruled and stamped in blind in compartments, raised bands, red morocco label. Ornament of a bear on title page, with engraved title-page and folding printed table. Ownership inscription of J. Watson of the Middle Temple dated 1752 on front free endpaper, with his stencilled ownership staamp in red aat head of title. Engraved armorial bookplate of one "N. W. M. Brunton" with the motto "Fax mentis incendium gloriae". Neatly rebacked and recornered, inner hinges strengthened. Some surface wear to covers. Small marginal hole to final three leaves, affecting one word on the final leaf. Pale damp mark to gutter of the first few leaves, and to the upper outer corner throughout. First edition, second printing of one of the foundation works in the field of political theory, with the bear ornament on the title-leaf, printed outside England (probably at Amsterdam). Leviathan details Hobbes's notion of the origin of the State as a product of human reason meeting human need, through to its destruction as a consequence of human passions. According to Hobbes, the State, as an aggregate of individual men (so well portrayed in the famous engraved title), should always be tendered the obedience of the individual, as any government, in his view, is better than the natural anarchic state. Needless to say, this view elicited a storm of controversy, putting Hobbes at odds with proponents of individual liberties. Through conflict, Leviathan has been the catalyst of much productive thought in succeeding centuries, from Spinoza to the school of Bentham, "who reinstated [Hobbes] in his position as the most original political philosopher of his time" (PMM). This book "produced a fermentation in English thought not surpassed until the advent of Darwinism" (op. cit.)
