Contemporary vellum, flat spine lettered in ink and with double gilt fillets, sides with double gilt fillet frame with corner- and centrepieces, gilt edges. Early printed bookplate (Federighi) to front pastedown. Vellum a little stained, light marginal waterstaining in places, a few quires lightly foxed or browned due to paper stock, still a very good copy. Allegorical engraved frontispiece by Johann Frederich Greuter depicting Vespucci reaching the Americas, engraved portrait of the author, section headings within elaborate typographical border, woodcut initials and tailpieces, text in two columns. First edition of this "magnificent" (Gamba) celebration of the discovery of America, an allegorical epic in ottava rima, forty cantos each of a hundred stanzas, "a sort of Pilgrim's Progress in verse" (Rich). The work celebrates the heroic wanderings and adventures of Amerigo Vespucci, in avowed imitation of Homer's Odyssey. In his introduction the Florentine author explains that the Odyssey is the more "complex", according to Aristotle's definition, of the two Homeric archetypes. Significantly, in his own reports Vespucci had cited the wanderings of Ulysses as described by his fellow Florentine Dante as a key inspiration for his voyages of discovery. "As expansion into the New World escalated, the irony was not lost on Italians that while Italy had no national presence in the New World, it was an Italian [i.e. Dante] who had inspired those journeys and Italians such as Columbus, Vespucci, Caboto, and Verrazzano who had assumed the roles of captains and navigators in the return to paradise" (Mary Watt, "Dante and the New World", in The New World in Early Modern Italy, eds.       Artist: Blaeu Willem Janszoon ca ; issued in: Amsterdam; date: ca1650 - - technic: Copper print; - colorit: original colored; - condition: Double counterlaid fold due to the printing; - size (in cm): 38 x 50; - description: Decorative map of Silesia with 2 cartouches.; - vita of the artist: Joan Guilliemus Blaeu was the eldest son of Willem Janszoon Blaeu (1571-1638), and was probably born in Alkmaar in the province of Noord-Holland in the final years of the 16th century. He was brought up in Amsterdam, and studied law at the University of Leiden before going into partnership with his father in the 1630s. Although his father Willem had cartographic interests, having studied under the Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe and having manufactured globes and instruments, his primary business was as a printer. It was under the control of Joan that the Blaeu printing press achieved lasting fame by moving towards the printing of maps and expanding to become the largest printing press in Europe in the 17th century.By the 1660s the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum (or Atlas Maior as it had became known by this time) had expanded to between 9 and 12 volumes, depending on the language. With over 3,000 text pages and approximately 600 maps, it was the most expensive book money could buy in the later 17th century. The translation of the text from Latin into Dutch, English, German, French, and Spanish for several volumes created enormous work for those involved in typography and letterpress activities. It is estimated that over 80 men must have been employed full-time in the Blaeu printing house in Bloemgracht, not including engravers who worked elsewhere, with over 15 printing presses running simultaneously, and in 1667 a second press was acquired at Gravenstraat. At the same time as producing the Atlas Maior, Blaeu was also publishing town plans of Italy, maps for globes, and other volumes. At its peak the Blaeu press managed to produce over 1 million impressions from 1,000 copper plates within four years.

In 1612 he married Elisabeth de Hondt, the daughter of Jodocus Hondius. He produced his first maps in 1616 of France and Italy. In 1623 Janssonius owned a bookstore in Frankfurt am Main, later also in Danzig, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Berlin, Königsberg, Geneva and Lyon. In the 1630s he formed a partnership with his brother in law Henricus Hondius, and together they published atlases as Mercator/Hondius/Janssonius.Under the leadership of Janssonius the Hondius Atlas was steadily enlarged. Renamed Atlas Novus, it had three volumes in 1638, one fully dedicated to Italy. 1646 a fourth volume came out with English County Maps, a year after a similar issue by Willem Blaeu. Janssonius' maps are similar to those of Blaeu, and he is often accused of copying from his rival, but many of his maps predate those of Blaeu and/or covered different regions. By 1660, at which point the atlas bore the appropriate name Atlas Major, there were 11 volumes, containing the work of about a hundred credited authors and engravers. It included a description of most of the cities of the world (Townatlas), of the waterworld (Atlas Maritimus in 33 maps), and of the Ancient World (60 maps). The eleventh volume was the Atlas of the Heavens by Andreas Cellarius. Editions were printed in Dutch, Latin, French, and a few times in German.

In the 1690s he began to use a new title page "Atlas Maior" but continued to use his old title page. His atlas of the Low Countries first published in 1667,was named Nieuw Kaertboeck van de XVII Nederlandse Provinciën and contained 14 to 25 maps. Frederik de Wit quickly expanded upon his first small folio atlas which contained mostly maps printed from plates that he had acquired, to an atlas with 27 maps engraved by or for him. By 1671 he was publishing a large folio atlas with as many as 100 maps. Smaller atlases of 17 or 27 or 51 maps could still be purchased and by the mid-1670s an atlas of as many as 151 maps and charts could be purchased from his shop. In ca.1675 Frederik de Wit released a new nautical atlas. The charts in this atlas replaced the earlier charts from 1664 that are known today in only four bound examples and a few loose copies. Frederik de Wit new charts were sold in a chart book and as part of his atlases. Frederik de Wit published no fewer than 158 land maps and 43 charts on separate folio sheets.In 1695 Frederik de Wit began to publish a town atlas of the Netherlands after he acquired a large number of city plans at the auction of the famous Blaeu publishing firm?s printing plates.Dating Frederik de Wit atlases is considered difficult because usually no dates were recorded on the maps and their dates of publication extended over many years.

Numerous coastal places are named, also on the French side of the Channel. As a result of the decorative cartouche, the area between Dover and Kingston upon Hull is not depicted. The Orkney Islands are depicted on the right edge of the map, with France (Calais to roughly Brest) on the left edge. Description: The map is based on the sea chart of the Anthony Jacobsz Lootsman from 1644. From: 'Atlantis Majoris Quinta Pars Orbem Maritimum seu .' by Johannes Janssonius (J. Jansson), published as the fifth volume of his Atlas Novus, c.1650. From a German ed. with German rear text. In 1623 Janssonius owned a bookstore in Frankfurt am Main, later also in Danzig, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Berlin, Königsberg, Geneva and Lyon. In the 1630s he formed a partnership with his brother in law Henricus Hondius, and together they published atlases as Mercator/Hondius/Janssonius.Under the leadership of Janssonius the Hondius Atlas was steadily enlarged. Renamed Atlas Novus, it had three volumes in 1638, one fully dedicated to Italy. 1646 a fourth volume came out with "English County Maps", a year after a similar issue by Willem Blaeu. Janssonius' maps are similar to those of Blaeu, and he is often accused of copying from his rival, but many of his maps predate those of Blaeu and/or covered different regions. By 1660, at which point the atlas bore the appropriate name "Atlas Major", there were 11 volumes, containing the work of about a hundred credited authors and engravers. It included a description of "most of the cities of the world" (Townatlas), of the waterworld (Atlas Maritimus in 33 maps), and of the Ancient World (60 maps). The eleventh volume was the Atlas of the Heavens by Andreas Cellarius. Editions were printed in Dutch, Latin, French, and a few times in German."

        Nieuw Amsterdam op t Eylant Manhattans.

      1650 - Amsterdam, c.1650. Etching, printed border 75 x 310mm. Corner of left bottom margin repaired, not affecting printed area; otherwise a very fine example. A rare and important early prospect of 'New Amsterdam', only the second view to be published and now the earliest available to the collector. It shows the Dutch colony at a time of crisis, when the Board of Nine sent a petition to the council of the Dutch West India Company complaining about conditions and mismanagement of the colony's affairs by the Director-General Peter Stuyvesant. Blaeu published this view not in one of his grand atlases but as a loose print, printed anonymously to accompany a political pamphlet, 'Vertoogh van Nieu-Neder-Land', which drew public attention to the plight of the New Amsterdam colonists under Stuyvesant. The colonists had sent Adriaen van der Donck to Amsterdam in 1649 to petition the Council with a written 'Remonstrance of the Commonality of New Netherland', asking for Stuyvesant to be recalled. It included this view of New Amsterdam to show the conditions in the small settlement, with only ten points worthy of inclusion in the key. These include the fort, windmill, flagpole (to guide ships to port), church, Company's Warehouse and, to emphasise the brutality of life there, the prison and gibbet complete with hanging body. The unlisted wooden 'crane' in the centre is a fire-basket signal pole for signalling at night. The 'Remonstrance' also included a map of the region showing how the colony was in danger of being overwhelmed by the English and calling for more aid. Van der Donck's map was copied and published by Jan Jansson (as 'Nova Belgii.', 1650); it and Blaeu's view were both originally issued anonymously because of the political implications of supporting a near-revolt in the colonies. Despite the support of the two publishers the 'Remonstrance' was ignored: Stuyvesant remained Director General until 1664, with a regime noted for its religious intolerance. In August that year the colony was taken by the English with only 450 men. A feature of Blaeu's etching is that it lacks a plate mark, having been one of several views printed from one printing plate and cut into separate sheets for issue. It soon became the standard view of New Amsterdam: shortly afterwards Nicolaes Visscher published a corrected version of Jansson's map and added the prospect in the bottom right corner and as he was the first publisher to admit to his work the 'New Amsterdam' became known as the Visscher view. In 1991 a pen, ink and watercolour sketch was uncovered in the Albertina Collection of the Austrian National Gallery, which is believed to be the prototype. The paper shows minor age-toning and foxing, the last two pages with ink inscriptions and notes in a very early hand (see photo), small corner tears on two pages repaired, printing sharp, engraved portraits sharp and beautifully printed.This is a very pleasing and handsome copy of what appears to be the scarce first edition . Although Worldcat (OCLC) erroneously lists a 1649 edition, it is actually the 1650 first edition; the preface is dated December 1649, but the title page reads MDCL [1650], see also Lowndes, p473, as well The Spirituality of the Later English Puritans: An Anthology, introduction. There was a second portion printed also in 1650, an expanded edition in 1654 and further expanded edition in 1675, these are not included here. But there is something quite unusual about this book, in that the edition from the Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library which we checked this copy against does not include the full page portrait, which this edition does, but it does include a preliminary commendatory leaf, which this copy does not. But Lowndes, the principal British bibiliography, lists a 1650 edition with a 1649 portrait, which thus perhaps makes this technically a true 1649 first edition, a variant, that conforms otherwise, but perhaps with the portrait instead of a commendatory leaf, it was printed a bit earlier than the other first editions, ie. perhaps even in late December, 1649. This 1650 edition does not conform completely to either of the 1650 editions in ESTC, containing neither the title lines of the one, but containing a hyphen which is not on the 2nd -- again, not quite fitting either ESTC entry. The book is the famous Puritan biography of great Church fathers and leaders, from ancient Christians like Ignatius and Polycarp, Augustine and Ambrose, to Protestant founders like Luther and Calvin, and to later commentators like Theodore Beza and Joseph Scaliger. It is handsomely printed, and includes numerous beautiful engraved portraits of the Christian luminaries, followed by their biographies. This book has been professionally rebound with contemporary looking leather spine with gilt lettering and leather corners, and marbled hardcover boards. Pero en su momento, su 'Cronología' llamó tanto la atención que se consideró una obra que merecía ser actualizada y mantenida al día. Eso fue así porque la obra de Kallwitz podría adscribirse a la corriente hoy denominada 'cronología sistemática', formada por quienes se centraron en el cómputo del tiempo y en la recopilación de fenómenos de los meteoros como mojones fehacientes de fechas concretas. Para esos autores, la sucesión de eclipses o el paso de cometas ya no tenían un carácter de augurio, sino que eran un necesario objeto de estudio en sí mismos porque, tras la obra de Copérnico, se sabía que en su movimiento existía una cadencia precisa que permitía emplearlos para medir tiempos. La visión de la cronología de estos autores partía de la que Scaliger había propuesto en 1583 en su De Emendatione Temporum, donde acudió a los movimientos celestes para datar acontecimientos históricos consiguiendo 'revolver' el concepto de Historia vigente en la mentalidad europea para hacer de ella un lecho común para todas las civilizaciones. Hasta entonces, la Historia era solo la de griegos y latinos; la del pueblo judío pertenecía a la Religión; y la de los pueblos de Oriente eran poco menos que leyendas. Compartiendo los criterios, Kallwitz no dudó en afirmar que, como "con mucha frecuencia los historiadores registraron los eclipses, dando cuenta de ellos en las historias de reyes y emperadores, estos se nos presentan como el mejor testimonio tanto para establecer la duración de un determinado reinado, como para certificar el verdadero desarrollo de los acontecimientos. Los eclipses proporcionan una certeza infalible, puesto que pueden calcularse astronómicamente y datarse para cualquier época"(1). A ese objetivo dedicó su Opus chronologicum, donde, tras un extenso capítulo inicial destinado a enseñar cómo calcular los eclipses solares y lunares y a mostrar exhaustivamente los tipos de calendario empleados en las culturas antiguas y del cercano oriente, de sus correspondencias y de cómo pasar de uno a otro, fue estableciendo, a partir de la datación de unos 300 eclipses, las fechas de multitud de los acontecimientos descritos por los historiadores que tuvieron lugar desde el día que en el calendario juliano era el 26 de octubre del 3949 a.c., la fecha en que se habría iniciado el mundo, el primer día del Génesis. Calvisius utilizó ese calendario porque el 'gregoriano' propugnado por Gregorio XIII en 1582 solo había comenzado a aplicarse en territorios católicos, mientras en el resto seguía empleándose el 'juliano'. Description: Source unknown, to be determined.Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Willem Janszoon Blaeu' after an anonymous artist. Willem Janszoon Blaeu was born 1571 in Alkmaar. He was trained from 1594 to 1596 by the famous danish astronomer Tycho Brahe. 1599 he went to Amsterdam and founded a business as globe maker. Later he started producing map and sea charts, including his first world map in 1605. His most famous work was the "Atlas Novus" or "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum sive Atlas Novus" of 1635, which was published until 1655 in total six volumes. After Blaeu's death in 1638 his sons Joan and Cornelis continued the businees and finished the "Atlas Novus" and started an even larger work, the "Atlas Maior", which reached 12 volumes. Condition: Good, given age. Paper separation upper and lower middle fold; reapaired. A few small spots. Text on verso slightly visible. Small soft crease bottom right corner.
