Contemporary vellum, flat spine lettered in ink and with double gilt fillets, sides with double gilt fillet frame with corner- and centrepieces, gilt edges. Allegorical engraved frontispiece by Johann Frederich Greuter depicting Vespucci reaching the Americas, engraved portrait of the author, section headings within elaborate typographical border, woodcut initials and tailpieces, text in two columns. Early printed bookplate (Federighi) to front pastedown. Vellum a little stained, light marginal waterstaining in places, a few quires lightly foxed or browned due to paper stock, still a very good copy. First edition of this "magnificent" (Gamba) celebration of the discovery of America, an allegorical epic in ottava rima, forty cantos each of a hundred stanzas, "a sort of Pilgrim's Progress in verse" (Rich). The work celebrates the heroic wanderings and adventures of Amerigo Vespucci, in avowed imitation of Homer's Odyssey. In his introduction the Florentine author explains that the Odyssey is the more "complex", according to Aristotle's definition, of the two Homeric archetypes. Significantly, in his own reports Vespucci had cited the wanderings of Ulysses as described by his fellow Florentine Dante as a key inspiration for his voyages of discovery. "As expansion into the New World escalated, the irony was not lost on Italians that while Italy had no national presence in the New World, it was an Italian [i.e. Dante] who had inspired those journeys and Italians such as Columbus, Vespucci, Caboto, and Verrazzano who had assumed the roles of captains and navigators in the return to paradise" (Mary Watt, "Dante and the New World", in The New World in Early Modern Italy, eds. Extremely scarce, very early publication on elephants, one of the earliest in vernacular, by the French scholar and writer, Salomon de Priézac (1639-1666). Salomon, who also authored books about the Nile and the theory of colors, was the son of Daniel de Priézac (1590-1662), one of the founding members of the French Academy (Académie française). Some pages misbound. First 5 leaves and H2 artistically restored. Wormholes on the lower edge of a4-6 with no effect on the text. A3 slightly overtrimmed that effects the marginal notes on its recto and verso. Rubbed at joints, bumped at corners. Complete. In fine condition. In somewhat later leather.         A charte of the island of Cap Verd

He has published numerous globes, land and sea maps together with Jodocus Hondius and Johannes Janssonius in Antwerp.From 1666, Pieter Goos, his son, also published a number of well produced atlases. He was the first to map Christmas Island, which he labelled "Mony" in his map of the East Indies, published in his 1666 Zee-Atlas (Sea Atlas). His Atlas ofte Water-Weereld (Atlas or Water World) has been cited as one of the best maritime atlases of its time. Another of his fine works was the Oost Indien (East Indies) map published in 1680. Pilot books, which contained a large number of navigation charts, were published by many authors, including Goos. He had a notarized agreement with two others, Jacob Lootsman and Hendrick Doncker, to publish pilot books for navigation along the Mediterranean coast, also covering easterly and westerly navigational routes. These were called the Dutch pilot books and remained valid for the period from 1643 to 1680. Goos was also instrumental in publishing the first pilot book for coastlines outside Europe. A further improvement over the pilot books in Dutch cartography was the publication of sea atlases covering the whole world. Initiated in 1659 by Doncker, the approach was also adopted by Goos from 1666. One of his larger works is named le grand & nouveau miroir ou flambeau de la mer (1662).In the same year, Goos published -The Lighting Colomne or Sea-Mirrour-, which not only contained nautical charts, but also -a brief instruction of the art of navigation-.The maps of Goos and Gerard van Kuelen were used exclusively during the eighteenth century until 1740. They were, however, found to have deficiencies such as the location of sandbars, grand banks and islands in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, with inaccuracies of as much as 44 leagues on the reduced Goos maps.Goos' famous world map titled Atlas ofte Water-Weereld was in two parts, one for each hemisphere. The colourful presentation included the two poles. His maritime maps encompassed not only Europe, Great Britain and Ireland but also the two poles.

He was brought up in Amsterdam, and studied law at the University of Leiden before going into partnership with his father in the 1630s. Although his father Willem had cartographic interests, having studied under the Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe and having manufactured globes and instruments, his primary business was as a printer. It was under the control of Joan that the Blaeu printing press achieved lasting fame by moving towards the printing of maps and expanding to become the largest printing press in Europe in the 17th century.By the 1660s the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum (or Atlas Maior as it had became known by this time) had expanded to between 9 and 12 volumes, depending on the language. With over 3,000 text pages and approximately 600 maps, it was the most expensive book money could buy in the later 17th century. The translation of the text from Latin into Dutch, English, German, French, and Spanish for several volumes created enormous work for those involved in typography and letterpress activities. It is estimated that over 80 men must have been employed full-time in the Blaeu printing house in Bloemgracht, not including engravers who worked elsewhere, with over 15 printing presses running simultaneously, and in 1667 a second press was acquired at Gravenstraat. At the same time as producing the Atlas Maior, Blaeu was also publishing town plans of Italy, maps for globes, and other volumes. At its peak the Blaeu press managed to produce over 1 million impressions from 1,000 copper plates within four years.

In the 1690s he began to use a new title page "Atlas Maior" but continued to use his old title page. His atlas of the Low Countries first published in 1667,was named Nieuw Kaertboeck van de XVII Nederlandse Provinciën and contained 14 to 25 maps. Frederik de Wit quickly expanded upon his first small folio atlas which contained mostly maps printed from plates that he had acquired, to an atlas with 27 maps engraved by or for him. By 1671 he was publishing a large folio atlas with as many as 100 maps. Smaller atlases of 17 or 27 or 51 maps could still be purchased and by the mid-1670s an atlas of as many as 151 maps and charts could be purchased from his shop. In ca.1675 Frederik de Wit released a new nautical atlas. The charts in this atlas replaced the earlier charts from 1664 that are known today in only four bound examples and a few loose copies. Frederik de Wit new charts were sold in a chart book and as part of his atlases. Frederik de Wit published no fewer than 158 land maps and 43 charts on separate folio sheets.In 1695 Frederik de Wit began to publish a town atlas of the Netherlands after he acquired a large number of city plans at the auction of the famous Blaeu publishing firm?s printing plates.Dating Frederik de Wit atlases is considered difficult because usually no dates were recorded on the maps and their dates of publication extended over many years.

Splendida prova, impressa su carta vergata coeva con filigrana "ancora nel cerchio con stella", rifilata al rame, in ottimo stato di conservazione. Ben nove copie di questo lavoro sono conosciute. Allievo di Andrea Sacchi, il Maratti si trasferisce a Roma nel 1650. La predilezione per la rappresentazione dei soggetti legati alla Vergine, alla quale secondo il Pascoli era devotissimo, gli valse il soprannome di Carluccio delle Madonne. Il corpus grafico dell’artista è da ricondurre agli inizi della sua carriera, alla bottega del Sacchi , e comunque prima del 1660. Tutte le incisioni del Maratti esistono in più stati, il primo dei quali, senza la firma dell’artista, è veramente molto raro. Si può pertanto ipotizzare che si tratti di prove di stampa, date alla luce solo per l’approvazione dell’autore, il quale successivamente imprimeva il proprio nome come autorizzazione alla stampa. Splendid work, printed on contemporary laid paper with "anchor in circle with star" watermark, trimmed to the platemark, in excellent condition. Nine copies of this work have been catalogued.Maratti, a pupil of Andrea Sacchi, moved to Rome in 1650. His favourite subjects were those connected with the Virgin, to whom he was a votary, as Pascoli said. For that reason he was named Carluccio delle Madonne. His graphic production has been realized at the very beginning of his career, during the years he spent in the workshop of Sacchi, and before 1660. All his engravings have exist in more than one state: usually the first state is always without the artist’s signature, and therefore quite rare. We could then assume that the first examples were nothing but a proof, printed to be approved by the author, who afterwards printed also his name as a sign of consent.         Nieuw Amsterdam op t Eylant Manhattans.

      1650 - Amsterdam, c.1650. Etching, printed border 75 x 310mm. Corner of left bottom margin repaired, not affecting printed area; otherwise a very fine example. A rare and important early prospect of 'New Amsterdam', only the second view to be published and now the earliest available to the collector. It shows the Dutch colony at a time of crisis, when the Board of Nine sent a petition to the council of the Dutch West India Company complaining about conditions and mismanagement of the colony's affairs by the Director-General Peter Stuyvesant. Blaeu published this view not in one of his grand atlases but as a loose print, printed anonymously to accompany a political pamphlet, 'Vertoogh van Nieu-Neder-Land', which drew public attention to the plight of the New Amsterdam colonists under Stuyvesant. The colonists had sent Adriaen van der Donck to Amsterdam in 1649 to petition the Council with a written 'Remonstrance of the Commonality of New Netherland', asking for Stuyvesant to be recalled. It included this view of New Amsterdam to show the conditions in the small settlement, with only ten points worthy of inclusion in the key. These include the fort, windmill, flagpole (to guide ships to port), church, Company's Warehouse and, to emphasise the brutality of life there, the prison and gibbet complete with hanging body. The unlisted wooden 'crane' in the centre is a fire-basket signal pole for signalling at night. The 'Remonstrance' also included a map of the region showing how the colony was in danger of being overwhelmed by the English and calling for more aid. Van der Donck's map was copied and published by Jan Jansson (as 'Nova Belgii.', 1650); it and Blaeu's view were both originally issued anonymously because of the political implications of supporting a near-revolt in the colonies. Despite the support of the two publishers the 'Remonstrance' was ignored: Stuyvesant remained Director General until 1664, with a regime noted for its religious intolerance. In August that year the colony was taken by the English with only 450 men. A feature of Blaeu's etching is that it lacks a plate mark, having been one of several views printed from one printing plate and cut into separate sheets for issue. It soon became the standard view of New Amsterdam: shortly afterwards Nicolaes Visscher published a corrected version of Jansson's map and added the prospect in the bottom right corner and as he was the first publisher to admit to his work the 'New Amsterdam' became known as the Visscher view. In 1991 a pen, ink and watercolour sketch was uncovered in the Albertina Collection of the Austrian National Gallery, which is believed to be the prototype. Les première phrases nous laissent penser à Saint Thomas : "Comme la dernière perfection de la raison dans la contemplation de *dieu & que nous n'avons pas assez de lumière pour le connoistre par luy mesme, nous pourrons tirer de grans avantages de la physique qui nous en donne quelque connoissance par la considération de ses effets" ; " L'homme est le plus noble des effets de Dieu que nous puissions connoistre ; cst pouruoy le principal devoir de la physique est de nous en faire connoistre la nature et l'origine" ; "Puisque la clarté de nos connoissances dépend de l'Ordre l'utilité de la Physique peut estre clairement connÛE PAR L4ordre des choses qu'elle doit considérer".
