THE ENGLISH-AMERICAN HIS TRAVAIL BY SEA AND LAND: OR, A NEW SURVEY OF THE WEST-INDIAS [sic], CONTAINING A JOURNALL OF THREE THOUSAND AND THREE HUNDRED MILES WITHIN THE MAIN LAND OF AMERICA

London, 1648. Small folio. 18th-century speckled calf, gilt stamp on front board, expertly rebacked in antique matching calf, boards re-gilt, leather label, spine gilt. Binding a bit worn at corners and edges. Faint stain on leaves B2 and B3. A few contemporary notes in text, some later pencil notes in margins. Very good. The Signet Library copy, with their gilt stamp on the front board. One of the most celebrated travel books of its day. Gage was an Englishman raised in Spain. He entered the Dominican Order and set out for the New World, traveling by way of the Philippines and across the Pacific. He spent most of the next twelve years in Central America, the West Indies, Mexico, Guatemala, Nicaragua, and Panama. When he finally returned to England and converted to the Church of England, he wrote this book to urge British seizure of the Spanish empire in America. Since the Spanish had jealously guarded foreign access to their dominions, this was the first detailed description to reach Europe of the regions visited by Gage, and it was widely reprinted and translated.

With double-page engraved plate with 6 views of the ship at fire and in a storm, the islands St. Mary, Samatra and Princes Eyland, and an image of flying fishes. Modern marbled wrappers.

Landwehr & V.d. Krogt, VOC 381; Tiele, Bibl. 159; Tiele, Mém. 173; Verkruijsse & Verhoeven 1648-03. One of the most compelling and entertaining travel accounts of Dutch literature. Bontekoe details his eventful 8-year voyage to the East Indies. The vivid description of his ship accidently exploding in the Sunda Strait, killing almost a third of the crew, no doubt made a huge impression on his readers. Bontekoe returned in 1625, but his travelogue was not published until 1646. It was an immediate success and went through numerous editions. From the beginning Raven's short account of a voyage to Greenland, during which he too suffered shipwreck, was added to Bontekoe's voyage.Almost all editions of Bontekoe's narrative are rare. This edition is a page-for-page reprint of an edition published by Hartgers in the same year. The original edition appeared at Hoorn in 1646, printed by Isaac Willemsz. for Jan Jansz. Deutel.A bit cut short; the two corners at the bottom of the plate gone, hardly affecting the plate. Good copy of the vivid description of Bontekoe's voyage to the East Indies.

THIRTY YEARS' WAR: An Important Signed Reconnaissance Letter Addressed to the Imperial Field Marshal Piccolomini from Colonel W. Fisch Dated 12th July 1648.]

Gloz (Klodzko/Glatz) 1648 - Gloz (Klodzko/Glatz), 12th July 1648. Folio (32x21cm). Text, one page of a folio bifolium. Original fold marks and some mount residue on verso, but overall a very good letter. Colonel Fisch reports that Swedish General Wittenberg had amassed about 5,000 men and 20 cannons in the Principality of Liegnitz between Konradswalde and Schoenfeld and was marching forward. Wittenberg had passed Weisswasser and united with the troops of Major General Müller. According to statements made by prisoners of war, a further advance to Troppau was planned. This letter gives important information about troop movements immediately leading up to the final battle of the Thirty Years War at Prague (25 July - 1 November 1648). Ottavio Piccolomini (1599-1656) was an Italian nobleman whose military career included service as a Spanish general and then as a field marshal of the Holy Roman Empire (Wikipedia).

Sylva sylvarum, sive historia naturalis, in decem centurias distributa

Lug. Batavor.: Apud Franciscum Hackium 12mo (12.9 cm, 5.1"). Add. engr. t.-p., [34], 612, [48], 87, [1] pp.. 1648 Compendium of scientific (and also quaintly "traditional") knowledge: This wide-ranging gathering of interesting observations in natural history was first published posthumously by the author's chaplain and secretary, Dr. Rawley, in 1626, and appears here translated into Latin by Jacob Gruterus. The present edition was, as Willems puts it, "exécutée" at Leyden by Hackius for Elzevier; some examples bear Elzevier's imprint and some Hackius's. The Novus Atlas accompanies the title work, with both having prefaces by Rawley. Provenance: Front pastedown with armorial bookplate of Alexander Oswald Brodie (not, please note, the American officer and governor of Arizona Territory); title-page with Brodie's inked inscription, dated 1839, Dresden. Contemporary vellum with yapp edges, spine with early inked title; spine lettering rubbed, back cover darkened. Both pastedowns lifted, front pastedown with bookplate beneath; free endpapers lacking. Title-page with inscription as above; pages with a very few small scattered spots, almost entirely clean. A handsome copy.

Biblia, Dat is, de gantsche H. Schrifture vervattende alle de Boecken des Ouden ende Nieuwen Testaments.

Amsterdam: Gedruckt by Rieuwert Dircksz van Baardt 1648 - "The Visscher Bible." Dutch Lutheran Bible with Maps. Folio. Size of binding: 9 ½ in. x 16 in; size of pages: 9 in. x 14 ¾ in. [18], 278, 112, 70, 132 leaves. With engraved pictorial title page, indices, engraved tail piece with the 1648 date. Frontispiece is an engraving of Martin Luther; also an engraving of Adolphus Visscher is mounted to the reverse of the title page. Contemporary full leather binding over oak boards. Blind-stamped with designs. Corners and clasp-holders in thick brass. Seven hand-colored, double-paged maps, one of which is the Stellatum Planisphaerium (Planisphere)by Ludovico (Louis) Vlasblom; this map of the solar system is the original state (Later states included the name Johannes van Keulen). The other six (maps or views of cities) are by members of the Visscher family, with the engravings done by various artists. (The Visscher maps are: [1] Orbis terrarum tabula recens emendada (The World) [2] Die gelegentheyt van 't paradys ende 't landt Canaan, mitsgaders de eerst bewoonde landen per patriarchen. (Paradise) [3] Perigrinatie oste veertichiarige reyse der kinderen Israëls. (The Perigrinations) [4] De heylige en wytvermaerde stad Ierusalem eerst genaemt Salem. (The Travels of St. Paul). Some details of these maps are fascinating: e.g., on the world map, the northwest coast of North America is greatly exaggerated, and California is shown as a peninsula. The Visscher maps and the Planisphere are all delicately and contemporaraneously hand-colored, with some details highlighted in gold. Woodcut tailpieces; large and small decorative and initials. Printed title pages for the Prophets and New Testament. Bookseller's catalog entry pasted to inner front cover. Birth notation in ink on front paste-down with a date in 1712. Spine and spine ends show some typical wear. The Planisphere shows a small split to the center of the lower edge where it is attached. This is the famous Bible which became standard for Dutch Lutherans. Very few existing copies still have the hand-colored maps. Some light damp staining to the upper margins of some pages, not affecting the maps. Dutch text. Weight: 11 ½ lbs. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

[London]: Printed in the yeare, 1648. [2], 92, [2 (blank)] pp. Bate, "physician and author, was born in Maids Moreton, Buckinghamshire, in 1608, the son of John Bate of Burton. On 20 February 1624, aged fifteen, he matriculated at New College, Oxford, where he was one of the college clerks. Migrating to Queen's College and then to St Edmund's, Bate graduated BA in 1626 and MA and BA in 1629, the latter giving him licence to practise around Oxford, and DM in 1637. Early observers may have labelled him a puritan, but when Charles I established the court in Oxford Bate became a member of the royal party, and was made physician to the king. Settling in London by 1639 Bate became a fellow of the College of Physicians in 1640 and served as censor in 1645, 1646, and 1648, and was named an elect in 1657. In 1656 he was part of the board of physicians which recommended the establishment of college of physicians in Edinburgh. However, Bate is best known for his published defence of Charles I in his confrontation with parliament. The Regall Apology, or, The Declaration of the Commons, written in English, was first published in Paris and London in 1648" [ODNB] and is here offered in the first edition.
