Amsterdam, Louis Elzevir, 1648. Folio. Engraved title + [3]f + 543 (misnumbered 547)p. With 70 engraved plates and 10 double-sided leaves of tables. Contemporary vellum; neatly rebacked. The handsome first edition in French produced on excellent paper; the translation by Helie Poirier made from the original Latin of 1647 published at the same press. This work on Dutch military architecture is unique in its period for the 40 accurate plans of existing fortified towns and for its careful attention to quantity surveying. The fine engraved title shows surveyors at work with a fortress in the background. Dögen (c.1605-72), a Prussian mathematician, presents his arguments based on practical experience gained in military service under Maurice and later, Frederick Henry of Orange. He considered the building of fortresses during peace time one of the best guarantees for the prevention of war. A few occasional light spots, but a very good, crisp copy, rare in this state. From the collection of the Earl of Ancaster with his engraved armorial bookplate pasted inside front cover (signed Harry Soane 1896). Jähns 1128-31; Jordan 0910; Rahir 1072; Spaulding & Karpinski 151; Willems 1063. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Teti immerge Achille nello Stige

1648. "Acquaforte e puntasecca, 1648 - 50, firmata in lastra in basso a destra. "Etching and drypoint, 1648 - 50, signed in the plate in the bottom right corner. Example in the rare first state of four, before the address of the publisher Arnold Van Westerhout. Magnificent proof, on contemporary laid paper with watermark ""lily in the circle"", with thin margins, traces of central folds of paper, otherwise in excellent condition. The work recounts several episodes and consequential damages related to the childhood of Achilles. The scene in the foreground on the right mythological episode in which Thetis, wife of Peleus, to make her son invulnerable Achilles, that he had chosen for himself a short but glorious life to a long life without glory, immerses him in the Styx, holding him by the heel, the only part of the body that remains vulnerable and where it will be shot to death by Paris. In reality incision Teti takes Achilles from the ankles to soak it in a jar containing the water of the Styx, which is depicted in relief the Winged Victory that is holding the crown of glory. The three female figures who assist Teti probably represent the Fates, the gods of fate and death. In this way, Head sums up the whole story of Achilles: his glorious deeds, his victories and his death. In the background, left, is shown at another time of the myth: Teti, after having consulted the Delphic oracle on the fate of his son, returns to her sisters, the Nereids, and with them began to collect water from the river. Standing, naked, putting his hand on an altar with incense pot with steaming offered as a gift to the oracle. Just behind another episode: Teti entrusted Achilles to Chiron because it educasse. In other versions of the myth, is the father Peleus, who entrusts her son to the centaur, but it is clear the central role of Head Teti who wants to emphasize. In the background on the right, two men hold up a burning brazier, symbol of the test to which they were subjected the children of Thetis and Achilles surpassed only because his mother had made him invulnerable anointing him with ambrosia and then cover it with fire. The work is part of a series of three on the birth and infancy of Achille, probably made ??by the artist in the last years of his life. As well as the Dream of Joseph, the Lucchesino re - engaging with the problem of how to represent moments chronologically thereafter. While in that case had chosen to represent a unique scene, full of symbolism, in this case, opt for the solution of isolated vignettes, harmonized with each other from the background landscape and architecture. Bellini cites a preparatory design work in a private collection in Milan, not otherwise known." Bartsch, 21; Bellini, 36; Cropper, 118; Le Blanc 20; Nagler 21. 410 282

- Folio (240 x 367 mm). Engraved title, 3 pp. of dedication, 12 leaves of text interleaved with 12 engraved plates, 1 leaf (Privilege du Roy), woodcut headpieces and initials. The plates, probably by Noel (not Nicolas) Cochin after La Chapelle, show costumes against a scenic background. Modern half calf over old marbled boards, giltstamped red spine label. First edition, very rare. Georges de la Chapelle, a native of Caen, accompanied Le Haye, the French envoy to the Porte, and spent several years in the Levant, and his work is known to us almost exclusively through these engravings, showing what Thieme/Becker described as "the prettiest ladies in the Imperial Seraglio". In the introductory text included in this first edition, La Chapelle explains that the series was occasioned by a recent French edition of Chalcondyles, in which (as he complains) the depictions of female costumes were very poorly drawn. La Chapelle clearly had a special interest in female costume: "his own representations are highly detailed, with special attention paid to the fabulous jewels and fine needlework that adorn the garments of Levantine costume. (According to the preface, the accuracy of his drawings could be attested by Le Haye [.], in whose presence the drawings were executed.) To add verisimilitude to the plates, examples of Turkish, Persian, Tartar, Armenian and Greek costume are depicted against topographical backgrounds showing the areas in and around Constantinople in which the models were most likely to reside" (Atabey). Curiously, several of these backgrounds, when placed side by side, form a near-consecutive panorama of Constantinople and its environs. - In excellent condition. Atabey 648. Colas 1697. Thieme/Becker VI, 378f. Cf. Blackmer 935 (second edition). Not in Lipperheide or Cohen/de Ricci. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

With large woodcut title-vignette depicting two vessels and double-page engraved plate depicting six views. 96 pp.The journal of Joris van Spilbergen was first published in Delft in 1605 by Floris Balthasar; with armorial bookplate of David Dunlop. - The trading pioneers in Holland, in this case the House of Moucheron in Zealand, fitted out an expedition to Sri Lanka under command of Joris van Spilbergen. Daily events concerning this voyage and his visit to the king of Kandy were carefully recorded. After admiral Spilbergen had established the first link between Sri Lanka and the Netherlands, he set sail for Acheh for negotiations with the sultan and hunting for Portuguese ships. The second voyage, under Steven van der Haghen, is the first voyage sent out to the East entirely under the auspices of the Dutch East India Company in 1603, with twelve heavily armed vessels taking about 1200 men. With descriptions of Goa and Cochin, Pegu (Burma) and the capture of Ambon and Tidor. Also with Van Hagen's fleet was the yacht Duyfken under Willem Jansz, who was to become the discoverer of Australia (Howgego p.470). - Two important voyages combined in one volume. - A fine and scarce copy.Tiele 1022; Tiele, Mémoire, 143; Landwehr, VOC, 198; Howgego S158; Lach, Asia in the making of Europe III, p.444; See De Silva & Beumer, Illustrations and views of Dutch Ceylon 1602-1796.

An Experimentall Essay Touching the Reformation of the Lawes...

1648. A Proposal to Simplify (and Liberalize) the Common Law from 1648 Impartiall Well-Willer to the Peace and Well-Beeing of All. An Experimentall Essay Touching the Reformation of the Lawes of England Anno 1648. London: Printed by M[atthew] Simmons in Alde[r]sgate Streete, 1648. [ii], 6 pp. Quarto (7" x 5-1/2"). Disbound stab-stitched pamphlet laid into recent marbled wrappers, printed title panel to front, title page printed within typographical border. Moderate toning, faint staining to leaves. A nice copy of a scarce title. * Only edition. The author was probably inspired by reforming spirit of the Civil War, which affected a number of jurists, most notably William Sheppard. He calls for a national survey to solicit proposals to simplify the common law: "The Lawes should be made as short and plaine as could be, without the nice words, and Tautologies, or Repetitions of Law that are now used" (5). He also proposes a number of liberalizing measures, such as the abolition of forest laws. OCLC locates 4 copies in North America (Harvard Law School, Huntington Library, Library of Congress, Law Library, Yale Law School). The ESTC adds 2 more locations (California State Library, Folger Library). English Short-Title Catalogue R201915.

Eikon basilike [Greek characters]. The Pourtraicture of His Sacred Maiestie in his solitudes and sufferings.

[London: no publisher,] , M.DC.XLVIII. [1648, i.e. 1649]. Small octavo (151 x 90 mm), pp. [6], 208, 107?154, 255?302, [16]. Handsomely bound in late 18th-century blue straight-grain morocco, smooth spine divided in compartments with gilt Greek-key and dotted rolls, memorial cypher of Charles I in compartments and date in gilt at foot, sides gilt with outer Greek-key roll enclosing central panel, corners filled with massed dots and fleurons, cypher of Charles I in centre, turn-ins with Greek-key roll, yellow ochre endpapers, gilt edges. Double-page engraved plate as frontispiece, engraved portrait of the Prince of Wales; text continuous despite pagination, the explanation leaf folded in at fore edge. Somewhat closely trimmed, shaving the head of the frontispiece and one or two headlines, but a fine copy in an attractive binding. Having lost both the pamphlet and the civil wars, Charles triumphed in death with the Eikon basilike, supposedly written by him but most likely ghost-written by his chaplain, John Gauden, who probably included some authentic writings of the king. First published on 9 February 1649, ten days after the king's execution, the book was hugely successful, and within a year had been published in some 50 editions in various languages. On behalf of the council of state, John Milton published his reply in October, entitled Eikonoklastes, but it had nothing like the same popular appeal. With its image of a pious ruler, the book inspired a cult of Charles as martyr and a lengthy tradition of royalist memorial bindings, such as this. Provenance: inscribed on the first blank, "Thos. Singleton, the gilt of Lady Caroline Stanhope, 1838. Mem. The binding is the renewal of the old binding & the tradition in the Harrington family is that the book had once been in the possession of King Charles 2d." Caroline Wyndham (d.1876) married Rev. Hon. FitzRoy Henry Richard Stanhope, son of the 3rd Earl of Harrington, on 8 November 1808. On the front pastedown is the small book label of Lady Williams of Bodelwyddan and the larger armorial bookplate of Arthur Henry Pargeter of the Middle Temple and Sevenoaks, Co. Kent, and his pencilled note of acquisition dated 11 July 1930.

1648 - Providing news of the earthquake that destroyed Santiago de Chile in the 17th century. 1648. Madrid. Diego Diaz de la Carrera. In folio (280 mm x 200 mm). 2 ff. Unbound. Spotting, lower margin cropped, affecting some words. First edition. An exceedingly rare imprint giving news of the earthquake that shook and destroyed Santiago de Chile, in May 1647, dated from Lima, 13 June, 1647, from where Gonzalez Chaparro wrote to Father Ovalle, to provide him with news of the natural disaster. Poetically, the author states that tears instead of ink, would a more suitable material to write these sad news. “Primera edición” (Medina). The imprint was translated into French, under the title “Relation de l'horrible tremblement, qui a ruyné . la florissante Cité de S. Jaques de Chile”, in the same year. Father Ovalle (1601 – 1651) was one of Chile´s most prominent historians, he author a rare relation of the Peace achieved with the Araucanian Indians, and the foremost history of Chile up the first half of the 17th century “Historia relacion del Reyno de Chile” (1646). The earthquake happened two years after the publication of Ovalle´s work, so this is probably the earliest extant report of the natural disaster, an event of great magnitude for the history of the region. Very rare, we find only 4 institutional copies, none have appeared in the market or for auction. Medina, Biblioteca hispano-chilena, 123. Palau, 105269. [Attributes: First Edition]

O Valeroso Lucideno, e triumpho da liberdade ….

Lisbon, Impressor Paulo Craesbeeck, 1648.. First Edition. Folio (27.5 x 18.5 cm.), modern vellum over boards, spine gilt, all edges gilt. Text in 2 columns. Light dampstains at center and light browning, but overall in fine condition. (8 ll.), 356 pp. *** FIRST EDITION, first issue, of this account of the restoration of Pernambuco and the expulsion of the Dutch from Brazil, described by Borba de Moraes as "one of the best books about the war against the Dutch." Despite having all necessary licenses, it was suppressed almost immediately after publication (perhaps due to the influence of the Jesuits), and from 1655 until the late nineteenth century was in the @Index librorum prohibitorum. (This copy has a contemporary note on the title-page regarding the 1655 prohibition.) @Valeroso Lucideno received a new sales license in 1668, and was reissued by Domingos Carneiro with 2 new preliminary leaves replacing the 8 leaves of the 1648 issue. The remainder of the work is unchanged - Carneiro undoubtedly used the unsold copies from the suppressed 1648 issue. Boxer comments, "Admittedly, Fr. Manuel Calado was no unprejudiced or dispassionate observer. He wrote at white heat, and often with the fighting raging within earshot of him, between September 1645 and July 1646. But his work is all the more vivid and graphic for that, and much of it reads very like the front-line dispatches of a first-rate war correspondent. Apart from his vivid account of the first year of the Pernambuco insurrection … he gives us a fascinating description of the colony in the days of Johan Maurits.… [His book] was intended to whip up popular and official support for the Pernambuco patriots, and it is naturally very one-sided … [It] remains absolutely indispensable." Boxer praises Calado's pen-portraits ("vivid masterpieces of spite") and notes that two other chroniclers, Diogo Lopes de Santiago in his @História da guerra de Pernambuco and Fr. Rafael de Jesus in his @Castrioto Lusitano, relied heavily on Calado, often using his work without acknowledgement. (See @The Dutch in Brazil pp. 298-9.) Throughout the nineteenth century the work was rare but not much sought-after, since critics found fault with its language. Borba noted in 1973, however, that "of the Portuguese books about Brazil published in the eighteenth [@sic] century, this is the most difficult to find." Southey appealed to readers of the first edition of his @History of Brazil (1810-19) to lend him a copy, as he had not been able to consult it. Calado, born in Villa Viçosa, traveled to Brazil where he remained for 30 years. He belonged to the comunity of Hermits of Serra de Ossa in the Alto Alentejo, between Estremoz and Redondo, of the Order of St. Paul the First Hermit. A soldier, preacher, poet and historian, he played an active part in the struggle against the Dutch, even organizing guerrilla warfare. *** Arouca I, 312, 25.

Rechts in beeld twee ruiters in galop. Prijs: € 1.850,- (BTW margeregeling).

Sereniss. Mantuae Duci Ferdinando Gonzaghae DD. Jo. Franciscus Barberius Centen. Inventor

Rome: Gio. Giacomo de Rossi, 1648. Compelling seventeenth-century drawing manual, one of the earliest Italian pattern books. Opening with images of the human eye, the manual examines the anatomy of other isolated features, then turns to character studies of various ages and types in action. Especially striking are the plates of a man's back tensing as he draws a bow (15), an elaborately coiffed woman reading a book (18), and a girl lighting a candle (21). The copper engravings are by Oliviero Gatti of Bologna after designs by the young Guercino (Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, 1591-1666), the Italian Baroque painter known for his fluid, naturalistic early style. Although the engraved title page is dated 1619, the imprint of Giovanni Giacomo de Rossi in the lower right corner indicates a mid-century date. A very good wide-margined copy of an evocative book, in a contemporary binding. Single broadsheet volume, comprising 22 numbered copper-engraved plates bound in full contemporary limp vellum. Engraved title page with dedication to the Duke of Mantua numbered 1. Contemporary ink ownership inscription to interior of front cover, slip of paper with pencil drawings after plate 2 laid in. Wear and staining to vellum, endpapers lightly foxed, front hinge reinforced. Faint tidemark to lower margin not affecting plates, stray marks indicating signs of use, though not affecting plates, with the exception of one spot to plate 14.

The Holy Bible containing the Old Testament and the New. Newly translated out of the originall tongues, and with the former translations diligently compared and revised by his Majesties speciall command.

London: Printed by John Field 4to (23 cm; 9"). OT: [478] ff. NT: [148] ff.. 1648 [bound with] Bible. O.T. Psalms. 1655. The whole book of Psalms: collected into English metre by Thomas Sternhold, John Hopkins, and others. Lonodn [sic]: Pr. for the Company of Stationers, 1655. 4to. [1] f., 122 pp., [2] ff. Two issues occur of this Bible, this being the one without the engraver's name on the title-page and with the printer's name spelled out and not abbreviated; the issues are the same after the first two leaves. This copy is without the Apochrypha, but with the final two leaves of the 1655 Psalms, which leaves are lacking in some reported copies. Provenance: On blank leaf before Psalms, "William Ingram His Booke 1660." Later in the Howell Bible Collection, Pacific School of Religion (properly released). Binding: 18th-century black morocco, spine with raised bands. Gilt-tooled on covers with concentric frames incorporating foliate corner devices and particularly elegant, delicate side toolings; these last notably well complement the similarly refined tools used to compose the gilt-extra spine. Gilt rolls on turn-ins, French combed endpapers, all edges gilt. Binding as above, lightly rubbed. Ex-library: Bookplate, small rubber-stamp in lower margin of engraved title, charge pocket at rear. Three leaves torn and repaired; some upper and lower margins closely trimmed affecting or costing captions, catchwords, signature marks, etc.; some foxing, dust-soiling, age-toning; waterstain to rear endpapers and faintly into final four leaves of the Psalms. Contemporary ownership note as above. Faults noted, this is yet a handsome mid-17th-century Bible — and, solid.
