1648 - Providing news of the earthquake that destroyed Santiago de Chile in the 17th century. 1648. Madrid. Diego Diaz de la Carrera. In folio (280 mm x 200 mm). 2 ff. Unbound. Spotting, lower margin cropped, affecting some words. First edition. An exceedingly rare imprint giving news of the earthquake that shook and destroyed Santiago de Chile, in May 1647, dated from Lima, 13 June, 1647, from where Gonzalez Chaparro wrote to Father Ovalle, to provide him with news of the natural disaster. Poetically, the author states that tears instead of ink, would a more suitable material to write these sad news. “Primera edición” (Medina). The imprint was translated into French, under the title “Relation de l'horrible tremblement, qui a ruyné . la florissante Cité de S. Jaques de Chile”, in the same year. Father Ovalle (1601 – 1651) was one of Chile´s most prominent historians, he author a rare relation of the Peace achieved with the Araucanian Indians, and the foremost history of Chile up the first half of the 17th century “Historia relacion del Reyno de Chile” (1646). The earthquake happened two years after the publication of Ovalle´s work, so this is probably the earliest extant report of the natural disaster, an event of great magnitude for the history of the region. Very rare, we find only 4 institutional copies, none have appeared in the market or for auction. Medina, Biblioteca hispano-chilena, 123. Palau, 105269. [Attributes: First Edition]

With large woodcut title-vignette depicting two vessels and folding engraved plate depicting 6 views. 92 pp.The journal of Van Neck and Warwijck was first published by Cornelis Claesz in Amsterdam in 1600. - The Dutch navigator Van Neck (1564-1638) was a representative of the Verre Compagny who in 1598 commanded three of the ships of the first successful Dutch trading voyage to the East Indies. The other ships were commanded by Van Warwijck and Jacob van Heemskerk. Van Neck's ships became separated from those of Warwijck and Heemskerk shortly after rounding the Cape of Good Hope. He did see them only some time after his arrival at Bantam. Loaded with cargo, four of the ships under Van Neck returned to Holland in 1599, while Warwijck continued to the Moluccas and Heemskerk to the Banda Islands. Van Neck was accompanied by Willem Jansz, the discoverer of Australia, then on his first voyage as mate of the Hollandia. Van Neck's was the most profitable of the pre-VOC voyages. (Howgego p.746). An important account of the second voyage of the Dutch to the East-Indies and first Dutch voyage to the Moluccas, which became the foundation for later Dutch control of the Moluccan spice trade. Also including a vocabulary of Javanese and Malay words.         O Valeroso Lucideno, e triumpho da liberdade ….

Lisbon, Impressor Paulo Craesbeeck, 1648.. First Edition. Folio (27.5 x 18.5 cm.), modern vellum over boards, spine gilt, all edges gilt. Text in 2 columns. Light dampstains at center and light browning, but overall in fine condition. (8 ll.), 356 pp. *** FIRST EDITION, first issue, of this account of the restoration of Pernambuco and the expulsion of the Dutch from Brazil, described by Borba de Moraes as "one of the best books about the war against the Dutch." Despite having all necessary licenses, it was suppressed almost immediately after publication (perhaps due to the influence of the Jesuits), and from 1655 until the late nineteenth century was in the @Index librorum prohibitorum. (This copy has a contemporary note on the title-page regarding the 1655 prohibition.) @Valeroso Lucideno received a new sales license in 1668, and was reissued by Domingos Carneiro with 2 new preliminary leaves replacing the 8 leaves of the 1648 issue. The remainder of the work is unchanged - Carneiro undoubtedly used the unsold copies from the suppressed 1648 issue. Boxer comments, "Admittedly, Fr. Manuel Calado was no unprejudiced or dispassionate observer. He wrote at white heat, and often with the fighting raging within earshot of him, between September 1645 and July 1646. But his work is all the more vivid and graphic for that, and much of it reads very like the front-line dispatches of a first-rate war correspondent. Apart from his vivid account of the first year of the Pernambuco insurrection … he gives us a fascinating description of the colony in the days of Johan Maurits.… [His book] was intended to whip up popular and official support for the Pernambuco patriots, and it is naturally very one-sided … [It] remains absolutely indispensable." Boxer praises Calado's pen-portraits ("vivid masterpieces of spite") and notes that two other chroniclers, Diogo Lopes de Santiago in his @História da guerra de Pernambuco and Fr. Rafael de Jesus in his @Castrioto Lusitano, relied heavily on Calado, often using his work without acknowledgement. (See @The Dutch in Brazil pp. 298-9.) Throughout the nineteenth century the work was rare but not much sought-after, since critics found fault with its language. Borba noted in 1973, however, that "of the Portuguese books about Brazil published in the eighteenth [@sic] century, this is the most difficult to find." Southey appealed to readers of the first edition of his @History of Brazil (1810-19) to lend him a copy, as he had not been able to consult it. Calado, born in Villa Viçosa, traveled to Brazil where he remained for 30 years. He belonged to the comunity of Hermits of Serra de Ossa in the Alto Alentejo, between Estremoz and Redondo, of the Order of St. Paul the First Hermit. A soldier, preacher, poet and historian, he played an active part in the struggle against the Dutch, even organizing guerrilla warfare. *** Arouca I, 312, 25.

Rechts in beeld twee ruiters in galop. Prijs: € 1.850,- (BTW margeregeling).

Sereniss. Mantuae Duci Ferdinando Gonzaghae DD. Jo. Franciscus Barberius Centen. Inventor

Rome: Gio. Giacomo de Rossi, 1648. Compelling seventeenth-century drawing manual, one of the earliest Italian pattern books. Opening with images of the human eye, the manual examines the anatomy of other isolated features, then turns to character studies of various ages and types in action. Especially striking are the plates of a man's back tensing as he draws a bow (15), an elaborately coiffed woman reading a book (18), and a girl lighting a candle (21). The copper engravings are by Oliviero Gatti of Bologna after designs by the young Guercino (Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, 1591-1666), the Italian Baroque painter known for his fluid, naturalistic early style. Although the engraved title page is dated 1619, the imprint of Giovanni Giacomo de Rossi in the lower right corner indicates a mid-century date. A very good wide-margined copy of an evocative book, in a contemporary binding. Single broadsheet volume, comprising 22 numbered copper-engraved plates bound in full contemporary limp vellum. Engraved title page with dedication to the Duke of Mantua numbered 1. Contemporary ink ownership inscription to interior of front cover, slip of paper with pencil drawings after plate 2 laid in. Wear and staining to vellum, endpapers lightly foxed, front hinge reinforced. Faint tidemark to lower margin not affecting plates, stray marks indicating signs of use, though not affecting plates, with the exception of one spot to plate 14.

The Holy Bible containing the Old Testament and the New. Newly translated out of the originall tongues, and with the former translations diligently compared and revised by his Majesties speciall command.

London: Printed by John Field 4to (23 cm; 9"). OT: [478] ff. NT: [148] ff.. 1648 [bound with] Bible. O.T. Psalms. 1655. The whole book of Psalms: collected into English metre by Thomas Sternhold, John Hopkins, and others. Lonodn [sic]: Pr. for the Company of Stationers, 1655. 4to. [1] f., 122 pp., [2] ff. Two issues occur of this Bible, this being the one without the engraver's name on the title-page and with the printer's name spelled out and not abbreviated; the issues are the same after the first two leaves. This copy is without the Apochrypha, but with the final two leaves of the 1655 Psalms, which leaves are lacking in some reported copies. Provenance: On blank leaf before Psalms, "William Ingram His Booke 1660." Later in the Howell Bible Collection, Pacific School of Religion (properly released). Binding: 18th-century black morocco, spine with raised bands. Gilt-tooled on covers with concentric frames incorporating foliate corner devices and particularly elegant, delicate side toolings; these last notably well complement the similarly refined tools used to compose the gilt-extra spine. Gilt rolls on turn-ins, French combed endpapers, all edges gilt. Binding as above, lightly rubbed. Ex-library: Bookplate, small rubber-stamp in lower margin of engraved title, charge pocket at rear. Three leaves torn and repaired; some upper and lower margins closely trimmed affecting or costing captions, catchwords, signature marks, etc.; some foxing, dust-soiling, age-toning; waterstain to rear endpapers and faintly into final four leaves of the Psalms. Contemporary ownership note as above. Faults noted, this is yet a handsome mid-17th-century Bible — and, solid.

Sylva sylvarum, sive historia naturalis, in decem centurias distributa.

Lug. Batavor.: Apud Franciscum Hackium 12mo (12.9 cm, 5.1"). Add. engr. t.-p., [34], 612, [48], 87, [1] pp.. 1648 Compendium of scientific (and also quaintly "traditional") knowledge: This wide-ranging gathering of interesting observations in natural history was first published posthumously by the author's chaplain and secretary, Dr. Rawley, in 1626, and appears here translated into Latin by Jacob Gruterus. The present edition was, as Willems puts it, "exécutée" at Leyden by Hackius for Elzevier; some examples bear Elzevier's imprint and some Hackius's. The Novus Atlas accompanies the title work, with both having prefaces by Rawley. Provenance: Front pastedown with armorial bookplate of Alexander Oswald Brodie (not, please note, the American officer and governor of Arizona Territory); title-page with Brodie's inked inscription, dated 1839, Dresden. Contemporary vellum with yapp edges, spine with early inked title; spine lettering rubbed, back cover darkened. Both pastedowns lifted, front pastedown with bookplate beneath; free endpapers lacking. Title-page with inscription as above; pages with a very few small scattered spots, almost entirely clean. A handsome copy.

Rechts in beeld twee ruiters in galop. Prijs: € 1.850,- (BTW margeregeling).

THE ENGLISH-AMERICAN HIS TRAVAIL BY SEA AND LAND: OR, A NEW SURVEY OF THE WEST-INDIAS [sic], CONTAINING A JOURNALL OF THREE THOUSAND AND THREE HUNDRED MILES WITHIN THE MAIN LAND OF AMERICA

London, 1648. Small folio. 18th-century speckled calf, gilt stamp on front board, expertly rebacked in antique matching calf, boards re-gilt, leather label, spine gilt. Binding a bit worn at corners and edges. Faint stain on leaves B2 and B3. A few contemporary notes in text, some later pencil notes in margins. Very good. The Signet Library copy, with their gilt stamp on the front board. One of the most celebrated travel books of its day. Gage was an Englishman raised in Spain. He entered the Dominican Order and set out for the New World, traveling by way of the Philippines and across the Pacific. He spent most of the next twelve years in Central America, the West Indies, Mexico, Guatemala, Nicaragua, and Panama. When he finally returned to England and converted to the Church of England, he wrote this book to urge British seizure of the Spanish empire in America. Since the Spanish had jealously guarded foreign access to their dominions, this was the first detailed description to reach Europe of the regions visited by Gage, and it was widely reprinted and translated.

In who almonst every History of the holy Scriptures are discribed. (Biblia/Bijbel).

Amsterdam, Cornelis Danckertsz. 1648. (frontispiece, 325, (frontispiece) 159 p. Contemporary half Leather, 4° oblong (renewed -old- endpapers, the Old Testament is fragile at the marigins and mostly fixed, the New Testament is in much better condition and is only fixed at some places. PRINTBIBLE with the 2 frontispieces and with 222 engravings. These are all contemporary HANDCOLOURED. The engravings are copied from Merian and printed by Danckertsz. in mirror image. Danckertsz. pretended like he designed all engravings himself and did not mention the name of Merian in this edition. Therefore this work is also called 'het vrome bedrog van Danckertsz.' which can be translated to 'the pious deception of Danckertsz.' With each engraving comes an accompanying poem from Reyen Anslo that is printed in Latin, French, German, English and Dutch. The series of engravings exists out of 2 frontispieces and 233 engravings, this copy lacks 11 pages, because of this there are 7 engravings from the Old Testament and 4 engravings from the New Testament missing. Despite this, still a beautiful contemporary handcoloured copy of the first edition of the printbible with Merianprints published by Cornelis Danckertsz.) Poortman, W.C. (1983). Bijbel en Prent. With double-page engraved plate with 6 views of the ship at fire and in a storm, the islands St. Mary, Samatra and Princes Eyland, and an image of flying fishes. Modern marbled wrappers.

Landwehr & V.d. Krogt, VOC 381; Tiele, Bibl. 159; Tiele, Mém. 173; Verkruijsse & Verhoeven 1648-03. One of the most compelling and entertaining travel accounts of Dutch literature. Bontekoe details his eventful 8-year voyage to the East Indies. The vivid description of his ship accidently exploding in the Sunda Strait, killing almost a third of the crew, no doubt made a huge impression on his readers. Bontekoe returned in 1625, but his travelogue was not published until 1646. It was an immediate success and went through numerous editions. From the beginning Raven's short account of a voyage to Greenland, during which he too suffered shipwreck, was added to Bontekoe's voyage.Almost all editions of Bontekoe's narrative are rare. This edition is a page-for-page reprint of an edition published by Hartgers in the same year. The original edition appeared at Hoorn in 1646, printed by Isaac Willemsz. for Jan Jansz. Deutel.A bit cut short; the two corners at the bottom of the plate gone, hardly affecting the plate. Good copy of the vivid description of Bontekoe's voyage to the East Indies.
