...Venice, Scipione Banca, 1667. Small 8vo (15 x 10 cm). Early 18th-century flexible paperboard wrapper. In a modern blue cloth clamshell box.

KVK/WorldCat (4 copies); cf. Harreld, "An education in commerce: ...", www.helsinki.fi/iehc2006/papers1/Harreld.pdf, p. 9 (1643 ed.); ICCU (1643, 1657, 1668, 1672 and later eds.). Rare third(?) edition of a handy little merchant's manual of international weights, measures and monetary values, aimed especially at Genoese and to some degree Venetian merchants, but providing information for trade with cities throughout Europe and even in Asia and Africa. We have located only four other copies of the present edition. Among the many cities and regions covered outside Europe are Crete, Constantinople, Aleppo, Tripoli, Tunesia, Persia and China. It gives exchange rates and information for understanding their weights and measures. With the lower outside corner of the first 2 leaves restored, slightly affecting the border and a few letters of the text, but otherwise in good condition, with the fore-edge margin of another leaf neatly torn off, not affecting the text, and slightly foxed throughout. A rare 17th-century manual of international weights, measures and currencies: a valuable tool for any history of international trade and commerce.

XXIV+197 pages.

Fiske I,641. Fiske, Runic 83. *** A well-preserved collection of Ole Worm's (1588-1654) pioneering works on runes and the history that could be deducted from runic inscriptions in Denmark. Title I i his major, groundbreaking work on runic inscriptions in Denmark. Ole Worm founded the science of runology, and tried with this work to give a full description of all know runic inscriptions and their location. In many cases this work is the earliest source of now lost inscriptions. The text is in latin and runic, and all the monuments described are reproduced in woodcuts. The book contains a large foldout woodcut reproduction of the one of the golden horns from AD 400-450 - found in 1639 but now unfortunately lost by theft in 1802. Title II discusses to royal Danish genealogical lines rooted in mythology, while title III, Fasti Danici, is the second and enhanced edition of Ole Worm's work on calendars from 1626, offering lots of documentation of medieval Danish runic calendars. Title I and III has numerous quotations in the runic alphabet, and both pieces are adorned with a fine Renaissance-style engraved titlepage, showing the Danish king Christian IV surrounded by Norse mythological figurse. Contemporary vellum binding. A well-preserved copy.

Burnet, Gilbert. (1643-1715) The Memoirs of the Lives and Actions of James and William Dukes of Hamilton and Castleherald, & c. In which an Account is given of the Rise and Progress of the Civil Wars of Scotland with other Great Transactions both in England and Germany, from the Year 1625, to the Year 1652. Together with many Letters, Instructions, and other Papers, Written by King Charles the I. Never before published, all drawn out of, or Copied from the Originals. London, Printed by J. Grover, for R. Royston, Bookseller to the Kings Most Excellent Majesty, 1677. Folio, 12 x 7.5 in. First edition. []3, a6, B-Zz, Aa-Zz4, Aaa-Lll4. Contains both portraits where other volumes are lacking. "[Burnet?s] vacations were spent chiefly in Hamilton, where the duchess engaged him in putting in order all the papers relating to her father?s and uncle?s political careers. Lauderdale, who had his own reasons for anxiety as to the light which might be cast upon transactions in which he had himself been engaged, no sooner heard of this than he sent for Burnet to come to court that he might give him all the informa¬tion in his power. The ?Memoirs of the Dukes of Hamilton?, Burnet?s first historical work, was published in 1676, [actually 1677]. His investigations led in a curious way to a reconciliation between Hamilton and the court. Among the papers which he ex¬amined were found undoubted claims of the family upon the crown, for satisfaction of which Hamilton consented to concur in the court measures. This was 1671". (DNB) In Burnet?s Preface to "Memoirs", he states one of the reasons for undertak¬ing this work, saying, "And particularly, I wondered to find James Duke of Hamilton represented to the World, with such foul and base Characters, as if he had been a Monster both for Ingratitude and Treachery, though he had laid down his Life for the King, and involved his Estate in vast Debts for His Service. It seemed to me the great¬est Injustice in the world, that one who served his Prince and his Country so long, and so faithfully, and sealed all with his blood, should not only be deprived of the Honour due to his Memory, but that a company of ignorant and impudent Slanders should do what they could to attaint his Blood and Family, by the black Imputations they have cast on him, and that this should pass current without any Vindications." "Specimen Islandiæ" is in parts an answer to Pontanus "Rerum Danicarum historia" (1631), where the latter makes the argument that Iceland is identical with Pytheas' Thule. Jónsson shows, with excerpts from, among other sources, "Landnámabók", that Iceland had been uninhabited before the landing in the 9th century. The Icelandic historian Arngrímur Jónsson (1568-1648) published several works on Icelandic history and had access to a number of now lost sources. The second work is a legal treatise on Justinian.
