The historie of the holy warre; by Thomas Fuller, B.D. prebendarie of Sarum, late of Sidney Colledge in Cambridge [hand-colored map]

Cambridge printed by R. Daniel, for Thomas Buck, and are to be sold by John VVilliams at the signe of the Greyhound in Pauls Church-yard 1640 Second Edition. Folio; [16], 286, [30]pp, collated and complete with a fine engraved title page (in addition to the letterpress title) depicting the crusades and a folding map of Palestine, both signed by William Marshall. (Leaf 2N6 is blank, as called for.) Unusually, the map, often lacking, is here colored in an early hand. The first leaf bears "A declaration of the frontispiece" signed: J[ohn].C[leveland]., the engraved title has the additional imprint: 'Printed by Thomas Buck one of the printers to the University of Cambridge. & are sold by Iohn Williams at ye Crane in St. P. Church-yard,' and the final 14 leaves contain a chronological table and an index. Newly bound by Fitterer in full period-style calf, the spine in six compartments divided by raised bands with a red morocco lettering piece gilt in the second. The text is generally clean with occasional scattered spotting and soiling to the margins; a worm track to the lower inner margins of pp 8-30, far wide of the text, has been reinforced with Japanese tissue; closed tear to the folding map now skillfully sealed by a paper conservationist with no loss but with the ghost from an earlier tape repair apparent. Overall, a Very Good copy, with rare hand-coloring, in a handsome binding. Provenance: Inscription to the top of the first text page 'Elysebeth Walsingham her book 1680,' probably Elizabeth Walsingham (d. 1733), daughter of Colonel Thomas Walsingham and Lady Anne Howard. Also with the ownership inscription to the front fly leaf of Jane Edwards / Sevenoaks. presumably the oral historian (1792-1868) who described goings-on in the small country West Kent town in "Her Recollections of Old Sevenoaks." Wither to Prior 386. ESTC Citation No. S121254. Very Good

        Comitatus Tirolensis.

Amsterdam, 1640 - Incisione in rame, mm 405x520, dipinta a mano d'epoca.

Philonis Judaei Omnia Quae Extant Opera.

Lutetiae Parisiorum, Paris 1640 - Folio, contemporary blind-stamped vellum. Greek and Latin text in parallel. Moderate wear to the binding, from the library of the Bishop of Vermont, generally sound otherwise. The Opera of the Hellenistic Jewish Biblical philosopher Philo Judaeus (20 BC-50 AD), who blended Greek philosophy and Judaism. Philo used philosophical allegory to attempt to fuse and harmonize Greek philosophy with Jewish philosophy. His method followed the practices of both Jewish exegesis and Stoic philosophy. His allegorical exegesis was important for several Christian Church Fathers, but he has barely any reception history within Rabbinic Judaism. He believed that literal interpretations of the Hebrew Bible would stifle humanity's view and perception of a God too complex and marvelous to be understood in literal human terms. "In the Diaspora, Judaism was forced to come to terms with Hellenism in a manner that could be avoided in Palestine itself. There was a movement within Judaism that sought to show the compatibility between the ancient faith and the best of Hellenistic culture. The high point of this entire tradition was Philo of Alexandria. who sought to show that the best of pagan philosophy agreed with the Hebrew Scriptures" (Gonz?lez I:13). According to Charles Duke Yonge, who translated this volume into English in the 19th century, these treatises prove Philo "deeply versed in Greek literature of every age and description, and of considerable skill in the sciences of music, geometry and astronomy. It is impossible to deny him the praise of acuteness and ingenuity, set off to their best advantage by neatness of language and felicity of expression." French scholar-printer Adrian Turneb?, who was both Royal Reader in Greek and directory of the Imprimerie Royale, uncovered a trio of Greek manuscripts in the king's library that he used to compile this volume.

Serpentum, et Draconum Historiae libri duo.

      - Bononiae, apud Clementem Ferronium, 1640. Folio (340 x 232mm). pp. (10), 427, (1), (28), with engraved frontispiece and 61 woodcuts in the text of which some full-page. 18th century half calf, spine with red and blue gilt lettered labels (top of spine lightly worn). First edition of this beautifully illustrated early work on snakes. It forms a special volume of Aldrovandi's 'Opera' published in 13 volumes. Only 4 volumes have been published during Aldrovandi's lifetime. "Although Aldrovandi is not identified with any revolutionary discoveries, his work as a teacher and as the author of volumes that constitute an irreplacable cultural patrimony earns him a place among the fathers of modern science. Perhaps most importantly he was among the first to attempt to free the natural sciences from the stifling influence of the authority of textbooks, for which he substituted, as far as possible, direct study and observation of the animal, vegetable, and mineral worlds" (D.S.B. I, pp. 108-110).Provenance: Free endpaper contemporary manuscript note 'Bibliotheca di S. Prodromus chemiae rationalis, ratiociniis philosophicis, observationibus medicis, &c. illustratae. Accedunt animadversiones in librum, cui titulus, collectanea chymica Leidensia ...Leiden, Peter de Graaf, 1684. 8vo. Contemporary vellum.

Krivatsy 7237; Partington II, p. 736; Thorndike VIII, pp. 152-153. First and only edition of an introductory work on chemistry, written by the "notable teacher" (Partington) Carel de Maets (1640-1690). The work, loosely translated as "an introduction to rational chemistry", gives advice on how to properly and carefully perform several chemical proceedings. De Maets was among the first to consider a rational, methodological approach towards chemistry. In his time, chemistry slowly gained recognition as a "real" science, where at first it mostly served other disciplines, especially in the field of medicine. The main text "is divided into nine chapters on extraction of tinctures or elixirs from the vegetable kingdom, calcination of antimony, calcination of mercury, various calcinations of other metals and their reduction to vitriols and croci, sublimations of antimony and mercury, volatile salts taken from animals, acid spirits of common salt and nitre, sulphur, oils and ardent spirits" (Thorndike). Pages 3-16 comprise the Animadversiones, in which De Maets criticizes de publication Collectanea chymica Leydensia, published earlier that year, stating "that it was published without De Maets's or Morley's consent or knowledge" (Thorndike). With owner's inscription on title-page. Browned and with some occasional spots throughout. Binding slightly soiled. Overall a very good copy.

        Ischia Isola, olim Aenaria

Amsterdam: Willem Blaeu. unbound. Map. Engraving. Image measures 14.75 x 19.25". This stunning circa 1640 map of the volcanic island of Ischia located in the Tyrrhenian Sea on the northern part of the Gulf of Naples depicts the mountainous island in exquisite detail. A combination of a map and a Bird's-eye view, it covers the island as well the coast of nearby Naples. The peninsula of Capo Miseno as well as the island of Procida are included. Oriented with north at the bottom, the map beautifully notes the various towns, cities, rivers, fields, etc. Forests and mountains are rendered in profile with the highest peak of Mount Epomeo clearly towering above the rest. Individual buildings and castles are rendered in profile, including the medieval Aragonese Castle that stands on the volcanic rocky islet that connects to the larger island of Ischia by a stone bridge. Ships are seen sailing in the Gulf of Naples.

At the time this map was issued, the Barbary Pirates operated in the region and for centuries terrorized the islanders. Many of the inhabitants ended up as slaves to the pirates.

The map includes three decorative cartouches including a beautiful title cartouche in the top left corner. The map is in very good condition with minor wear along the centerfold and some printing creases near the bottom right. Minor foxing.

Willem Blaeu (1571-1638) was a prolific Dutch mapmaker who started one of the most famous map publishing firms of the 17th century. It was at this time that the Dutch controlled the map trade, and their ornate and beautiful maps had immense popularity. Blaeu was instrumental in driving this dominance in his lifetime, and this legacy was continued by his sons. This is a beautiful example of his work.

Con 4 magnifiche tavole anatomiche finem. inc. in rame f.t. Terza edizione (la prima era apparsa, postuma, a Milano nel 1627) dell'unica opera dell'Aselli (Cremona 1581 - Milano 1625, allievo di G.B. Engraved double-page map (image size: 41.5 x 51 cm; leaf size: 48 x 57 cm) from a Blaeu atlas, with French text on the verso. With Blaeu's name beneath the dedication in a armorial cartouche on the lower left, title in a cartouche on top and scales in a cartouche on the lower right. V.d. Krogt, Koeman's Atlantes Neerlandici II, 2:112.2, no. 85. Engraved map of Southeast Asia, showing the area from India in the north west to the most southern part of Japan in the north east, with the Indonesian archipelago in the most south with an outline of the western part of New Guinea (now part of Indonesia). The areas depicted furthermore include present day Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam, and Cambodia, Malaysia and the Philippines. This map was published in the second volume of the Le theatre du monde ou Nouvel Atlas published in 1640, by the famous cartographer Willem Jansz. Blaeu (1571-1638). His position as official cartographer of the Dutch VOC ensured he had access to the most accurate region information, making the best maps of his era. The present map gives an accurate view of the topographical knowledge of Asia in the early 17th century, with the first account of Europe exploration of Australia, showing an accurate outline of New Guinea. Some minor browning along the extremities, a tiny tear in the left margin and a couple spots. A good copy.

[Greek Title] Dendrologia - Dodona's Grove, or the Vocall Forrest

London: T.[homas] B.[adger] for H. Mosley, 1640. [12], 32, 39-135, 166-219pp, [1]; (pi2, A2, a2, B-2A4). Later full calf by Roger De Coverly, raised bands, spine in six panels, title label to second panel, remaining panels gilt with volute corner pieces and central floral spray, covers with triple fillet border, edges and inner edges with gilt roll, a.e.g., marbled endpapers. Small scrape to head of upper cover, spine slightly faded. Internally some light staining to margins, but generally quite bright and clean. Previous owner's armorial book plate to front pastedown (Thompson Yates). With engraved frontispiece, vignette title and double page engraving of trees. This copy also has the engraved portrait (not called for) that is sometimes found bound in, though it is slightly narrower than the rest of the pages. Engravings are by Matthaeus Merian. Howell is probably best known for his Epistolae Ho-Elianae: Familiar Letters, published in 1645. Dodona's Grove is a political allegory about events in Europe in the early seventeenth century, Lowndes derides it as "tiresome and silly ... written in a most wretchedly bombastic style", but it was reprinted in 1641, 1645 and 1649, with a second part published in 1650, there was also a Latin edition in 1646 and a French edition in 1641. De Coverly was apprenticed to Zaehnsdorf and taught Cobden-Sanderson for a short period. A handsome copy. Pforzheimer 512; CBEL I:2226; Lowndes 1129. First Edition. Full Calf. Very Good. Illus. by Merian, M.[atthaeus]. 4to.

        Ischia Isola, olim Aenaria

Willem Blaeu, Amsterdam - This stunning circa 1640 map of the volcanic island of Ischia located in the Tyrrhenian Sea on the northern part of the Gulf of Naples depicts the mountainous island in exquisite detail. Map. Engraving. Image measures 14.75 x 19.25".

Commentarius in harmoniam sive concordiam quatuor evangelistarum....

Bernard Lamy (1640-1715) was an Oratorian priest, philosopher, and biblical scholar. After getting himself exiled to Grenoble for excessive Cartesianism, he went on to do significant work in biblical studies, and this present work is especially notable: Lamy here contends that Jesus died on the cross on the eve of the Passover (thus at the same time as the Passover lamb was being killed), not during the first day of the Passover. This view, while considered radical at the time, is now generally held by biblical scholars. This work was first published under the title Harmonia, sive concordia quatuor evangelistarum in 1689. This second edition is printed in small roman types with some italic, Greek, and Hebrew. Ornaments include an ornate woodcut fleur-de-lis on the title-pages, plus initials and headpieces. Vol. II (bound in) consists of the Apparatus chronologicus et geographicus, chronologies and geographical descriptions with three fine fold-out plates: a map of Judea, a plan of Jerusalem, and a plan of the temple.Provenance: Charles Spencer, Third Earl of Sunderland, lot 7230 in the Sunderland Library sale (1882).

        Kingdom of Napels - Blaeu.

Add. engr. t.-p., [16], 286, [30] pp.; 1 fold. map.. 1640 Second edition, following the first of the previous year: A very popular anti-Catholic (and anti-Jewish as well) account of the crusades, citing the cruel and impious behavior of popes and participants alike as reason for the failure of the conquest of the Holy Land. Fuller, chaplain extraordinary to Charles II, was one of the earliest English historians thus to analyze the crusades as a historical event. The volume opens with an added engraved title-page and also features an oversized, folding map of the region, both signed by William Marshall. The preliminary "Declaration of the Frontispice [sic]," an explanation in verse of the title-page's symbolism, is signed by J.C., i.e., John Cleveland. Period-style dark calf, covers framed and panelled in gilt and blind rolls with gilt-stamped corner fleurons, spine with gilt-stamped leather title-label, gilt-ruled raised bands, and gilt-stamped compartment decorations. Title inked on outer (closed) edges in an early hand. Dopo la sua morte nel 1638, a cura del figlio Johan si giunse nel 1662 alla pubblicazione del celebre "Atlas Maior" in 11 volumi. Asia antique map - Willem Blaeu, 1640.

MAP OF ASIA"Asia Noviter Delineata." Carte-a-figures by Willem Blaeu depicting the native manners of dress, and nine city plans and views at the top. Copper engraving printed in 1640, coloured by a later hand. Size 41 x 55,2 cm.A fine example of Willem Blaeu's famous map of Asia. Like the Blaeu Africa map, this is a map that appeals both to a sense of cartographic history and to an aesthetic sense of beauty. This is a cornerstone, folio-size map of Asia and is one of the better known, more decorative maps of Asia of the 17th century. This map is basically a reduction of Blaeu's wallmap of Asia of 1608. The map contains extensive details on what was known of Asia in the early 17th century. Korea is still an enlonged island. Japan has a predominantly east to west direction. In China, the Great Wall is shown along with the in-land lakes.Willem Janszoon, or Willem Jansz Blaeu (1571-1638) as he is more commonly known, was one of the most noted Dutch cartographers and map publisher of the 17th century. Blaeu's maps are "esteemed by collectors for their decorative quality, historical importance, and as the highest expression of Dutch cartographic art during the period of its supremacy" (Tooley, p 28).After preparation as a pupil of the great Danish astronomer,Tycho Brahe, Blaeu initially concentrated on globe making and separately published maps, including wall maps of the continents. From 1608, he dominated the market for sea atlases and in 1630 produced his terrestrial atlas. These atlases were continued by his sons, culminating in the great Atlas Maior of 1662 in 11 volumes with subsequent editions. The map is in its 3rd state. The 1st state of 1617 was issued separately and has the name of "Willem Jansz" (not Blaeu) in the title cartouche. This state is rare and is virtually impossible to acquire. The 2nd state of 1621-30 has the name changed to "Guiljelmo Blaeuw" in the title. Price: € 2.750,- (excl. VAT/BTW).

        Africa antique map - Bleau, c. 1640.

"Africae nova descriptio' Copper engraving with outline colour to cartographical image and full colour to pictorial borders. Published in Amsterdam by Willem Jansz. and Joan Blaeu c. 1640. Size: 41 x 55,5 cm. In handsome walnut frame. This is a cornerstone map of Africa and is one of the better known, more decorative maps of Africa of the seventeenth century. The map shows major African towns across the top: Tangiers, Ceuta, Algiers, Tunis, Alexandria, Cairo, the island of Mozambique, The Mine at St. George in Guinea and Canaria in the Canary Islands. The left and right borders show various indigenous costumes: Moroccans, Senegalese, traders in Guinea, Congolese, Egyptians, Abyssinians, Mozambicans, the king of Madagascar and inhabitants of Cape of Good Hope. The body of the map is richly embellished with animals, including elephants, monkeys, ostriches, gazelles, lions, cheetahs and camels. In the oceans are numerous sailing ships, sea monsters, flying fish, and a gorgeous compass rose. Much of the geographical information is still based on the Ptolemaic maps, with the Nile shown with its source in the Lakes Zaire and Zaflan. Also included are various other mythical lakes and rivers including the famous Lake Sachaf. Only coastal towns are named on the Cape, with the printing covering much of the unknown territory.Willem Janszoon, or Willem Jansz. Bleau (1571-1638) as he was to be later more commonly known, was one of the noted Dutch cartographers and map publishers of the seventeenth century. After preparation as a pupil of the great Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe, Bleau initially concentrated on globemaking and separately published maps, including wall maps of the continents. From 1608, he dominated the market for wall maps and sea atlases, and in 1630 produced his terrestrial atlas. These atlases were continued by his sons Joan (c. 1599-1673) and Cornelis (1610-1644), culminating in the great Atlas Maior of 1662 in 11 volumes by Joan Bleau with subsequent editions. On February 23, 1672 a fire at the offices of the Bleau publishing effectively ended the successful Bleau business. Joan died after the fire in 1673, and, though Joan II continued the business for some time, many of the plates were auctioned shortly thereafter. This map was not reprinted after 1672 as the Africa copperplate is not known to have survived the fire. The Spanish edition of the Atlas Maior was in the process of being printed, including the section on Africa with this map of Africa, when the fire occurred.Blaeu"s maps set the standard for the quality of the engraving, paper and colour, as well as a fine depiction of contemporary geographical knowledge.Price: € 3.500,- (incl. frame) (BTW/VAT margin scheme).
