[Garden bugloss] Buglossum sempervirens Hispanicum latifolium; [White Italian bugloss] Buglossum Italicum flore albo; [Blue Italian bugloss] Buglossum Italicum flore coeruleo

Eichstatt, 1640. Hand-coloured engraving. In excellent condition. Basil Besler published "Hortus Eystettensis", the earliest large folio botanical, at Eichstatt near Nuremburg, in 1613. He worked on the drawings for the 374 copper engravings over a period of sixteen years using the plants in the garden of Bishop Johann Conrad von Gemmingen, his patron. Depicted in this florilegium were flowers, herbs, vegetables and newly discovered plants such as tobacco and peppers. Besler was, in modern terms, a botanist and horticulturalist, and he was familiar with real and alleged medicinal properties of various plants. Besler had the good fortune to live at a time when exotic plants were being shipped to Europe from all over the world. The garden that he organized and illustrated for his patron was both ornamental and experimental, and the large book he had engraved after his drawings was unique. The prints, made by a team of master engravers, are strong and exquisitely done.

Bruges, Belgium. 1640. 1st edition. hb. Small 4to, Printed by Ian Baptiste and Lucas vanden Kerchove. Pagination: pp. (10), 208, (44), 112 (plates and maps), (58). . A compendium of the shields, escutcheons and crests of the nobles of Flanders, with illustrations thereof. Written in Flemish, and published duing the period of Spanish rule; hence the effusive dedication to King Philip of Spain. Bound in period half leather over what might best be described as printer's boards, now heavily scuffed and slightly bowed. Joints starting but binding holding nicely. Stain to first 30, or so, pages, extending down from top margin about half way. Pages a bit rolled from binding stress, otherwise (except as noted) contents clean and unmarked, especially those pages on which the copper engravings of medallions, crests and maps are displayed. Some early Dutch handwriting to inside front board. Name (early "copperplate") to inside rear board. Measures 27 x 19 cm. WorldCat notes only sixteen copies in libraries of the "Dutch" edition of this book. Similarly, WorldCat notes only one institutional holding of the 1640 German edition (The British Library, London), although we suspect that this is an error as the information provided suggests that the cataloger mis-identified this as a separate German edition (Flemish and German, especially in the old type fonts, appear very similar). Four copies have appared at auction in the last five years, with an average hammer price of just over $1,000 USD. .

        Apollo e Marsia

Etching, 1640 circa, signed on lower centre plate. Magnificent work printed on contemporary laid paper without watermark, uncommon wide margins and signs of central fold, otherwise in excellent condition. A very rare work, invented by the Bolognese artist himself. Giovanni Andrea Sirani started working in the workshop of Giacomo Cavedone and afterwards he went to Guido Reni's, becoming his most faithful pupil and the heir of the majority of his drawings. Sirani was the meekest among Guido's pupils, who often were often very greedy and tried to make out some money on their master by selling minor works that were passed off as originals. Showing his skills as a drawer, Sirani gained Reni's favour who often commissioned him to copy the preparatory drawings on the canvases. Bartsch XIX, p. 149, 2

This is the second state of Blaeu's map of the southeastern portion of North America. The map depicts the region from present day northern Florida to Chesapeake Bay. France is shown as governing the southern portion of this land (though they had been forced out in fact some time before by the Spanish) and Great Britain as ruler of the northeast. As pointed out by Burden, this map improves on the Hondius-Mercator map of the same region in its depiction of the Outer Banks and in its inclusion of the Chesapeake Bay, and it provided the best depiction of the region until 1700. Its handsome cartouche surrounded by full figure Native Americans and its elaborate calligraphy contribute to make it one of the most artistically successful maps of 17th century America. Cumming, 41 (plate 26); Burden, The Mapping of North America 253; Goss, 31.

        Riviera di Genova di Levante

1640 c.. Incisione in rame, colorata a mano, mm 380x495. Buon esemplare, molto marginoso.

Opobalsamu[m] Triumphans. Basel, Franz Perna, 1640.

1640. 4to. Engraved t. p., (6), 51 (1) pp. Written space rules throughout. Marbled boards. Early botanical study of the Balsam of Mecca (Balm of Gilead), a resinous gum of the tree Commiphora opobalsamum, native to southern Arabia. "Concerns controversy with Antonio Manfredi and Vincenzio Panulio" (Krivatsy). - Born and educated at Rome, the surgeon and botanist Pietro Castelli (1574-1662) moved to Messina in 1634. Here, he laid out the botanical gardens, where he cultivated many exotic medicinal plants. - Heavy brownstaining throughout, still a good copy of this rare work. VD 17, 1:062780A. Cf. Krivatsy 2252.

Iesus Maria.

s.d. (1640/1658). 4to (cm. 29) Manoscritto di 5 cc.nn. (la quinta è bianca), 86 cc. num. e 19 cc.nn. (bianche). Testo in prevalenza su 20 righe. Nitida, bella grafia.

Relationi universali. Arricchite di molte cosse rare, e memorabili. E con ultima mano dell'autore. Venice, Giunta, 1640.

1640. 4to. (8), 800, (36) pp. With 4 folding engr. plates (Europe, Asia, Africa, America). (Bound with) II: The same. Della ragioni di stato, libri dieci. Ibid., 1640. (8), 264 pp. Contemp. vellum with ms. spine title. Famous geographical treatise by Giovanni Botero (1544-1617), with Arabia pictured on both the Asia and the Africa plate, and discussions of the Arabian Peninsula (pp. 120 ff.), the Middle East (pp. 123 ff.), "Arabia troglodotica" [!] (p. 130 f.), Egypt (pp. 131 ff.). Originally conceived as a statistical examination of the ecumenical propagation of Christianity, in subsequent editions the work gradually expanded until it formed a comprehensive repertory of anthropology and geography, with systematic accounts of the physical properties, demographics, economic resources, military power, and political constitution of all states of the world. - Appended to this is Botero's famous treatise "Della ragion di Stato" (The Reason of State), in which Botero argues - against Machiavelli - that a prince's power must be based on some form of consent of his subjects, and princes must make every effort to win the people's affection and admiration. - Some browning throughout; occasional insignificant edge defects and small tears; traces of old library stamps. Graesse I, 504. Cf. Cox I, 71.
