Early botanical study of the Balsam of Mecca (Balm of Gilead), a resinous gum of the tree Commiphora opobalsamum, native to southern Arabia. And Particularly the Practices of the Court of Rome, To hinder the Reformation of their Errours and to maintain their Greatness. Translated into English, the "Historie of the Councel of Trent" chronicles the great Council that formed the modern Catholic Church. The Council of Trent played an important part in determining the outcome of the Counter-Reformation. Called for by Pope Paul Ill, the Council was finally disbanded in 1563; although it had a life span of 18 years, it was only engaged in talks for four and a half years. The Pope did not attend the meetings of the Council and he took no formal part in it, however his legates had to ensure that the popes views would always be put forward in order that there was no danger of the Council being superior to the Pope. The Council was called to examine doctrine and reform. Charles V had wanted abuses looked at first in an attempt to please the Protestants and hopefully tempt them back to the church. Once they were back they could look at doctrine. Paul III did not want this as reforms could financially damage him and concessions could diminish his authority. The result was that two separate sections dealt with reform and doctrine simultaneously. The Council of Trent did mark a turning-point in the history of the Catholic Church as it gave Catholics a certainty about their own beliefs and practices that had been lacking and offered a firm base on which the spiritual life of the Catholic world could be reconstructed.

        Opobalsamu[m] Triumphans.

Basel, Franz Perna, 1640. - 4to. Engraved t. p., (6), 51 (1) pp. Written space rules throughout. Marbled boards. Early botanical study of the Balsam of Mecca (Balm of Gilead), a resinous gum of the tree Commiphora opobalsamum, native to southern Arabia. The resin was valued in medicine and perfume in ancient Greece and the Roman Empire; thus Pliny the Elder mentions it as one of the ingredients of the "Royal Perfume" of the Parthians in his Naturalis Historia. - One of several editions published the same year; Perna himself produced another version without his imprint on the title page. "Concerns controversy with Antonio Manfredi and Vincenzio Panulio" (Krivatsy). - Born and educated at Rome, the surgeon and botanist Pietro Castelli (1574-1662) moved to Messina in 1634. Here, he laid out the botanical gardens at Messina, where he cultivated many exotic medicinal plants. - Heavy brownstaining throughout, still a good copy of this rare work. VD 17, 1:062780A. Cf.         EPISTOLARUM LIBRI X ET PANEGYRICUS

Lugduni Batavorum: Ex Officinâ Elseviriorum, 1640. First Elzevier Edition. Edited by Jean de Laet . Hardcover. 127 x 70 mm (5 x 2 3/4"). 12 p.l., [1]-289, 300-414 (i.e., 404) pp., [14] leaves. First Elzevier Edition. Edited by Jean de Laet. VERY PLEASING 18TH CENTURY CRIMSON MOROCCO, covers with triple gilt fillet border, raised bands, spine handsomely gilt in compartments with large central fleuron within a lozenge of small tools and volute cornerpieces, MATCHING MOROCCO DOUBLURES with intricate gilt dentelle, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Woodcut printer's device on title page, woodcut headpieces, initials, and tailpiece. Rahir 503; Willems 506. Leather a bit darkened in spots and with a hint of wear, occasional mild foxing, isolated rust spots, other trivial imperfections, but a really excellent copy, the binding very bright and showing almost no wear, and the text clean, fresh, and printed on better quality paper. The earliest Elzevier printing, this beautifully bound volume contains 10 books of epistles, along with the eulogy on the emperor Trajan, one of the two extant works of Pliny the Younger (62-113) studied for the incidental information it contains about the author and his times. The graceful, light, and charming letters touch on court activity, literature, matters of state, geography, current events, and a variety of other subjects (particularly interesting is Pliny's account of the eruption of Vesuvius in 79). Together, these epistles give an intimate portrait of Roman life and manners between 75 and 112, and a very different picture from that found in Juvenal's satires. Pliny served in the senate under Trajan and corresponded with him in some of the letters which he sent from his post of governor in Bithynia, the most notable being his description of the rapid growth of Christianity in his province. Also included in the letter collection is Trajan's response, in which the emperor writes to tell Pliny not to hunt out Christians, but only to interrogate those whose beliefs are openly proclaimed. Pliny's panegyric of Trajan, while too laudable to be impartial, gives us an interesting picture of one of Rome's best rulers. Our Belgian editor Jean de Laet (d. 1649) was not only a classical scholar, but also a geographer who wrote a number of important works in his field on topics ranging from Brazil to Persia to Belgium itself.

Iacea nigra flore albo; Iacea nigra flore purpureo; Cnicus peregrinus flore coeruleo [Wild centaureas]

Eichstatt: 1640, 2nd edition. Hand-coloured engraving. 20 5/8 x 16 1/4 inches. Basil Besler published "Hortus Eystettensis", the earliest large folio botanical, at Eichstatt near Nuremburg, in 1613. He worked on the drawings for the 374 copper engravings over a period of sixteen years using the plants in the garden of Bishop Johann Conrad von Gemmingen, his patron. Depicted in this florilegium were flowers, herbs, vegetables and newly discovered plants such as tobacco and peppers. Besler was, in modern terms, a botanist and horticulturalist, and he was familiar with real and alleged medicinal properties of various plants. Besler had the good fortune to live at a time when exotic plants were being shipped to Europe from all over the world. The garden that he organized and illustrated for his patron was both ornamental and experimental, and the large book he had engraved after his drawings was unique. The prints, made by a team of master engravers, are strong and exquisitely done.

        [Sundial Projection World Map]

1640. Map. Uncolored engraving. Image measures 11.25" x 14". This imaginative world map by Franz Ritter, often referred to as the "Sundial Map," constitutes one of the most creative--if not bizarre--map projections proposed in the early 17th century. At a time when cartographers throughout Europe were devising new ways to depict the world on paper, Ritter, a German astronomer, first came up with this idea in 1610. This map is the second state, printed in 1640. It is projected from the North Pole, such that the land masses around it are laid out as if on the table of a sundial. In fact, Ritter developed the map to function specifically with regard to his home city of Nuremberg by drawing the Tropic of Capricorn to follow the shadow that the dial would cast at Nuremberg's latitude. The resulting map looks distorted, with lands increasing in size as they are further away from the Pole, but it actually maintains correct mathematical scale. Nonetheless, the projection failed to catch on, making this curious map the only known sundial projection. As such, it remains a beautiful and fascinating document of 17th century cartography. Continents, countries, cities and rivers are all labeled. Land masses are outlined crisply, and the expanded space of the southern continents created by the projection is filled with pictorial mountains and indigenous creatures. Ships, animals, and mythological beings also populate the seas. At the bottom of the map is a fine compass rose labeled with the winds. A rectangular floral frame includes the cardinal directions. The map is in excellent condition with narrow margins and no chips or tears. Dark impression. Franz Ritter was a German astronomer and mathematician who applied his knowledge of astrolabes and sundials to the art of cartography. His rare work is a prized item for any map collector.

PERIBOLOGIA ODER BERICHT VON VESTUNGSGEBEWEN [i.e. VESTUNGSGEWEBEN]. [and in a second part] VON BEVESTIGUNG SOWOHL DER LAGER ALS STÄTTE UNDT SCHLÖSSER

Frankfurt: Anton Hummen, 1640. FIRST EDITION. Hardcover. With More than 400 Illustrations of Fortifications, Fearful to Besiegers, but also Embracing Urban Development. 318 x 210 mm (12 1/2 x 8 1/4"). 163, [9] pp., followed by plates. Two volumes bound in one. FIRST EDITION. Attractive contemporary German blindstamped pigskin, covers with multiple frames of palmette, medallion, and floral rolls, central panel with lozenge centerpiece formed by four fleurons, the same tool repeated in the corners, raised bands, (faded) ink titling on spine, remnants of green cloth ties. WITH 410 ENGRAVED ILLUSTRATIONS by Johann Wilhelm Dilich printed on 232 plates, 192 of these double-page, one a large folding plate. Cockle 832; Pollak, "Military Architecture, Cartography, and the Representation of the Early Modern European City: A Checklist of Treatises on Fortification in the Newberry Library," 14; Berlin Katalog 3526. A scattering of tiny brown flecks to upper board, light external wear and a hint of soiling, but the original binding completely solid and generally very well preserved. Text faintly browned and offset (as is common with German paper of this period), the majority of the plates with variable marginal foxing (mostly light, never severe), the fold-out plan with short tears and small patches of discoloration (one other plate partly torn along fold), other trivial imperfections, but still a very appealing copy internally because everything fresh, and the impressions of the plates extremely rich. This is a classic work on fortifications by the leading German authority of the period, someone whose own defense designs for the city of Frankfurt withstood assault until Napoleon's attack in 1806. According to Pollak, "This treatise is distinguished by the ferocity of the illustrations which attempt to create an aesthetic of fear, elaborated in the external form of the fortification, especially the casemates, the gun embrasures of the parapet and the gates. [Dilich's] outlines for fortified city plans are somewhat influenced by Francesco de'; Marchi';s, but have even more extensive outworks; [he] clearly supported a fortification system based on the 'tenaille', a predilection partially announced by his title (Peribologia = study of the circumference [of a sanctuary]). Nonetheless, many of his fortified city plans contain elaborate proposals for urban compositions of streets, squares and building lots." This work was published at a propitious time: the Thirty Years War was raging in Europe, and it was becoming clear that Medieval fortresses and walled cities were no defense against cannons, as demonstrated in successful sieges like those at Heidelberg and La Rochelle. There was thus quite a need for a book such as " Peribologia," and our German first edition was followed the next year by a Latin version. Wilhelm Dilich (1571-1650) was a peripatetic polymath educated at Wittenberg and Marburg. He spent many years touring and producing works of geography and travel description, before accepting the positions of historian, geographer, and architect to Maurice, Elector of Saxony. The illustrations here are by Dilich's son, Frankfurt engineer and architect Johann Wilhelm (1600-57), who also underwrote the publication. Mattheus Merian was inspired by the plates, which are both of historical interest and considerable aesthetic merit.

Britton, The Second Edition, Faithfully Corrected According to

1640. The Best Edition of Britton [Breton, John le (d. 1275), Attributed]. Wingate, Edm[und] [1596-1656], Editor. Britton. The Second Edition. Faithfully Corrected According to Divers Ancient Manuscripts of the Same Booke. London: Printed by the Assignes of John Moore, 1640. [xv], 287, [21] ff. Octavo (5-3/4" x 3-1/2"). Recent period-style speckled calf, blind rules to boards, raised bands and blind rules to spine, endpapers renewed, other endleaves lacking, early armorial bookplate (of James Bengough of ye Inner Temple London Gent. 1702) to verso of title page. Some toning to text, light foxing in a few places, light foxing to title page, internally clean. A handsome copy. * Second edition. Text in Law French, preliminaries and corrections in English. Along with Fleta, Britton is one of two significant law books produced during the reign of Edward I [1272-1307]. According to Francis Morgan Nichols, editor of the 3rd ed. (1865), it is a legal compilation with no known author, wrongly attributed to John Britton, or Le Breton, bishop of Hereford. The oldest English book in Law-French, it was probably a response to a wish of Edward I to produce a digest of the English law in the spirit of Justinian's Institutes. Book One outlines the authority of justices and officers and defines the nature of various personal pleas (including pleas of the crown). Book Two describes disseisins and their remedies. Book Three treats intrusions and their remedies. Book Four describes pleas relating to advowsons and the property of churches (and of attaints). Book Five outlines pleas of dower and entry. Book Six defines different kinds of proprietary actions. In all, this treatise offers an incomparable overview of British law during the medieval era. The first edition was issued was printed in 1540. As Wingate observes, it is "exceeding full of manifest imperfections," including the omission of an entire chapter (Advertisement [iii]). Wingate corrects these errors and supplies the missing chapter. (All of these improvements to the 1540 edition are listed in an appendix.)
