// Modern calf, covers with gilt border and inside corner ornaments, gilt spine on 5 raised bands, [140] ff. (age-toned). Very good copy on coarse paper. Extremely rare Rouen edition of an adaptation of the medieval story of Amis and Amyles (Amile). Physically identical, Ami and Amile are spiritual twins, conceived and born on the same day; their meeting is preordained, and together they go to serve Charlemagne. The allegorically named Ami substitutes without anyone's knowledge for Amile in a judicial duel, which Amile cannot fight himself because he knows that he is guilty, as accused, of having slept with the emperor's daughter. Ami swears his innocence and wins. Charlemagne, believing it is Amile who is innocent, proceeds to betroth the daughter to him; Ami, who cannot now reveal his true identity, accepts her. As he is already married, God punishes his prospective bigamy by afflicting him with leprosy. His wife drives him away from home. After years of illness, he meets Amile again, who learns from an angel that he can cure Ami only by bathing him in the blood of his own children. With some misgivings Amile cuts his young sons' throats, Ami is healed, and a miracle restores the children to life. The friendship of the 2 heroes surpasses all other social relationships in the text to such an extent that in the end all other ties are abandoned and the friends leave France together. Title within double border of type ornaments. Woodcut illustration on title and one in text. Printed in 2 cols. Bookpl.: Edward Davenport, [Heilbrun], W L G. / Ref. BN Paris (1). Not in Goldsmith (BL London), Le livre populaire etc. // Photos available upon request. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Relations of the most famous kingdomes and Common-wealths thorowout the World

London: John Haviland, 1630. Small quarto, a good copy but bound without the map mentioned on the title-page; contemporary calf, spine and joints wearing, label chipped. "Lately found out, and by our latest Cosmographers" Early English edition of Botero's famous chronicle. Translated into several languages from the original Italian, it was widely read not only by travellers but also by 'the growing number of politicians who believed that geographical knowledge was essential to them' (Robert Shackleton, Modern Language Review, July 1948). This English edition in particular was one of the early compendia of geography to have real social and political impact, and was recognised as a vade mecum of early modern thought on the subject which included practical advice for travellers: to exercise but to avoid tennis, to dance if young, to take water with wine, and to carry few books - or preferably none - so as to avoid trouble with the Inquisition. First published in English as The travellers Breviat in 1601, a succession of later editions incorporated the newest information and revisions. The information relating to America is in the "Sixth Booke. Of America, commonly called West India" (pp. 625-36), and has notes on Columbus, Vespucci and Magellan. There are descriptions of some ten specific regions, including Mexico, Virginia, and "Nova Francia." The last book, entitled "The Seventh Booke. America Magellanica, or Peruana", features a description of South America including the lands beyond the Straits of Darien, and is positively envious of the gold and other minerals being gathered there by the Spanish. This section also includes a significant paragraph on Terra Australis, the land that 'was lately found out, and by our latest Cosmographers… as comprehending many large regions (viz.) Psitacorum regio, Terra del feugo (sic), Beac, Lucach, and Maletur… But what people inhabit them, what fashions they use, or what profitable commodity fit for the life of man they afford, it hath not yet beene by any man discovered'. Unfortunately, as is often the case with early printed works, the map called for on the title page is missing. STC lists some 10 copies but can confirm the presence of the map in only 3; it would seem to have been avidly pursued by map-collectors. Where present, the map is a later state of that issued in The World Encompassed by Sir F. Drake (London, 1628).

Autograph document signed, in Latin and French, 1 October 1623. 2½ pages. Offered here with the first obtainable edition of Rey's only published work.

One of the rarest autographs in the history of science. The only autograph in private hands from the hand of French physician and chemist Jean Rey, author of Essays de Jean Rey... Sur la recherche de la cause pour laquelle l'estain & le plomb augmentent de poids quand on les calcine (1630). This extraordinarily rare book, of which only a few copies are known, was Rey's only publication; it anticipated by more than one hundred years Lavoisier's discovery that the calcination of metals involves combination with air - a discovery fundamental to the overthrow of the phlogiston theory and the foundation of modern chemistry. Lavoisier published his discovery in 1774; the following year, chemist Pierre Bayen alerted Lavoisier to the existence of Rey's Essays. Lavoisier was so impressed with "the apparent modernity of Rey's ideas" (McKie, p. xl) that he at first believed Rey's work to be a forgery; he later spoke of the work with admiration. In 1777 a second edition of Rey's Essays, edited by Nicolas Gobet, was published in Paris [i.e., the edition being offered together with the autograph document]; this edition - the earliest obtainable - has also become rare (see Duveen). Of this edition Neville writes: "A milestone work in the history of chemistry, describing for the first time that metals gain in weight on calcination (by combining with the then-unknown oxygen of the air). The first edition (Bazas, 1630) is extremely rare: only seven copies are known. Also rare, this second edition [i.e., the offered] contains a new preface and footnotes by the editor, Nicolas Gobet. Reprinted is a letter bt Pierre Bayen, who first drew attention to the Essays in 1775; letters between Rey and Mersenne; experiments on the manipulation of air over water by Moitrel d'Element... Lavoisier orgiginaly believed the 1777 Essays to be a forgery, but by 1792, in his Mémoires de Chimie, he gave an appreciative account of Rey's book."

Douglas McKie, in the historical introduction to his facsimile edition of Rey's Essays (1951), relates what little is known of Rey's life, describing in detail the scant documentary evidence that remains, and reproducing examples of Rey's handwriting. The University of Montpellier, where Rey studied medicine from 1605 to 1609, preserves a signed 6-line inscription in Latin written by Rey when he matriculated at the University (1605), as well as four other documents bearing Rey's signature: two consilia (1608 and 1609), Rey's licence en medicine (1609) and a document Rey signed upon receiving his doctorate (1609). Apart from these, the only other signed autograph document of Rey's is the one we are offering here, "containing his signed prescriptions and dietary for a distinguished patient living near Toulouse, Baron de Fourquevaux, whose father had been Governor of Narbonne and ambassador of several French Kings, and had escorted to Scotland Marie de Guise, bride of James V and mother of Mary Stewart... After 1623 we have no further record of Rey until the appearance of his Essays, dated from Le Bugue, lieu de ma naissance, on 1 January 1630" (McKie, p. xix).

It is hard to imagine any autograph in the history of science that would be rarer than this! Our 2½ page autograph document was at one time owned by Dr. Pierre Lemay, who published a study of Rey in the Bullétin de la Société française d'histoire de la médecine 32 (1938): 148; see McKie, p. xix (n). Dictionary of Scientific Biography. Partington, History of Chemistry, II, pp. 631-36.. Autograph document: one leaf folded vertically 261 x 375 mm. Lower part of center fold reinforced, minor soiling, but fine otherwise. 18th century inscription in French on the last page. Book: a very fine copy in contemporary French calf, pp xxxii, 216 and 2 full-page engraved plates
