Fourth edition (as stated in STC) of Raleigh's major work written during his years in the Tower, one of only a few of his writings intended for publication to a wide audience, "a political tract of immediate applicability" (PMM). First published in 1614, The History of the World was straightaway suppressed for its censorship of the monarchy, but it remained extremely popular and ran through ten editions between 1614 and 1687. "What exists is a substantial work, of about a million words, in five books, running from the creation of the world to 146 BC, the time of the second Macedonian war. The first two books are principally, though not wholly, concerned with biblical history, the last three mainly with the story of Greece and Rome … The History is far more than a chronology. Its opening chapters described the creation of the world and its nature, before Raleigh moved to the philosophical problems raised by the concepts of prescience, providence, free will, and fortune" (ODNB). "It proved an arsenal of political ammunition to the Englishmen who overthrew the absolutism of the Stewarts at home and laid the foundations of New England beyond the seas … He was among the first Englishmen to envisage clearly that the Americas should be the principal goal of English overseas expansion" (PMM). This copy includes the bookplate, dated 1702, and ownership signature of barrister and politician Abel Ketelbey (1675/1676–1744).

The Unlovelinesse of Love-Lockes. Or a Summarie Discourse, Prooving: The Wearing and Nourishing of a Lock or Love-Locke, to be Altogether Unseemely, and Unlawfull unto Christians . .

London: Printed, Anno, 1628 - Small 4to, modern brown morocco period style by Philip Dusel, light brown morocco label, gilt lettering. A rare and early work by pamphleteer and lawyer William Prynne (1600-1669), who was tried twice by the Star Chamber for sedition, but later served in the government of Charles II. In The Unlovelinesse Prynne rails against the current fashion of men wearing long hair - or love-lockes - which he condemns for several reasons, e.g.: "Because they are but embleemes and signification of mens love, to such female amorous, and lascivious creatures . . . it makes them odious, sinfull, and abominable. . . . Ovid, Martiall, and others condemne this frouncing, frizeling, colouring, powdering, and over curious dressing of the haire as an effeminate, womanish, and unmanly thing . . ." In the margins are numerous printed notes, supporting Prynne's thesis, which he added to all his published works and for which he was nicknamed "Marginal Prynne." (DNB). Edges slightly browned; fine copy, with the front blank (A1) and good margins. First edition, one of two issues, the difference being the spelling of "needs" on page 19. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

- Kl. Bezugsfehlstelle am Vordergelenk und kl. Stoßstelle an der Vorderkante des Rückdeckels. Tls. gebräunt bzw. etwas braunfleckig, insgesamt recht gutes Exemplar!

(Mica overlays in Electorate of Saxony thaler coin case)

      (c. late 17th century). Hand-painted miniature portrait with five mica overlays, all in a case mimicking a Saxon Thaler coin. The case opens to reveal a full-body portrait of a finely-dressed man and woman, as well as a delicately rendered portrait of young woman. Both are touched with metallic silver paint. The fashion in the paintings, with the off-the-shoulder dresses and the shapes of the sleeves and bodices combined with the looser fit of the menswear, suggests the 1660s, although is possible the set was made later. Housed with the portrait are seven hand-painted mica overlays, sometimes called "talcs," that can be used to change the garb of the woman. Similar to outfitting a paper doll, these transparent mica sheets are laid on top of the master image, and the opaque painted areas superimpose new costumes, hairstyles, and accessories on the figure below. The bright overlays display a variety of outfits and accessories, including three that show men's clothing. Mica overlays like these first appeared in a surge of popularity in the mid-seventeenth century as a form of entertainment and continued on into the early 1800s. The portraits were often of royalty, mostly female, and it was not uncommon for overlays of both female and male costuming to be included with the female portraits. Because of the fragile nature of the mica, very few of these transformation games have survived. Housed in a replica of the 1628 thaler, with a portrait of Johann Georg I on one side, and the shield of the Electorate of Saxony under the Holy Roman Empire on the reverse. The coin was originally minted from 1620-1638. The size of the case is approximately that of the actual coin, which measured 45mm in diameter; the coin here measures 43mm. In unusually fine condition; overlays show the occasional chip at the edge or scratch to the image, as expected.

The New Testament of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. [bound with] The Whole Book of Psalmes.

Two volumes bound in one, 24mo, (528), 330, (6) pp. Decorative title pages and a full page woodcut at the end of the New Testament, Psalms with music throughout, both works ruled in red. New Testament title slightly creased with minor loss to one corner, 20th century inscription - "E.W. Collins, The Museum, Bramber" and a small sticker from the book's presence at a Church Congress Exhibition to a front blank. Strikingly bound in contemporary velvet with an ornate pattern of silver filigree, the velvet faded with wear to extremities and some cracking to joints, a few small pieces of filigree lacking but overall a remarkable survival and a most unusual example of 17th century book-binding.The Bramber Museum in West Sussex was famous for its remarkable displays of taxidermy. The nephew of its founder, Walter Potter, Collins inherited the collection and maintained it until his death in 1969. Loosely inserted is a piece of manuscript in a different hand quoting a passage from "Sussex Church Music in the Past" by K.H. Macdermott (1922) referring to this volume and noting its origins in the East Sussex village of Waldron.
