        Geographia.] Rerum geographicarum libri XVII.

Paris, typis Regiis, 1620. - Folio. 2 parts in one volume. (12), 843, (112) pp. (4), 282, (8) pp. Title printed in red and black with engraved vignette showing arms of Louis XIII. Double-column text in Greek and Latin. Finely engraved head- and tail-pieces and large inhabited initials throughout. Contemporary English vellum gilt, panelled sides with two double-rule borders enclosing a four-part fan motif centrepiece and surrounded by fan motif cornerpieces, flat spine gilt with foliate motifs and small tools. Enlarged and corrected second edition ("much more accurate and splendid than the first", says Dibdin) of Strabo’s "Geography", one of the earliest and most important scientific treatises of historical geography. Contains the Greek text beside Xylander's Latin translation, with commentaries by Frédéric Morel and Isaac Casaubon. Together with the works of Ptolemy and Solinus, Strabo's "Geography" constitutes the first attempt at a unified treatise of geographical knowledge. Strabo had visited Egypt and sailed up the Nile in 25 BC. Even in the introductory chapters, the author provides important details on the Arabian Peninsula: "Adjoining the Ethiopians, a needy and nomad race, is Arabia: one part of which is distinguished above all other lands by the title of Felix [i.e., Hedjaz and Nejd-ed-Ared], and the other, though not dignified by that name, is both generally believed and also said to be pre-eminently blessed. Though Homer knew of Arabia Felix, at that time it was by no means wealthy, but a wild country, the inhabitants of which dwelt for the most part in tents. It is only a small district which produces the aromatics from which the whole territory afterwards received its name, owing to the rarity of the commodity amongst us, and the value set upon it. That the Arabians are now flourishing and wealthy is due to their vast and extended trade" (bk. 1, p. 39); "Arabia Felix is bounded by the entire Arabian and Persian Gulfs, together with all the country of the tent-dwellers and the Sheikh-governed tribes. [.] Beside the ocean the country is tolerably fitted for habitation of man, but not so the centre of the country: this for the most part is barren, rugged sand desert. The same applies to the country of the Troglodytic Arabians and the part occupied by the fish-eating tribes" (bk. 2, p. 130f.) Furthermore, books 15 and 16 are devoted entirely to the Orient (bk. 16 is on Arabia in particular), while the final book 17 discusses Egypt and Libya. - With 19th c. bookplate of Richard Newcome, and later label of Viscount Mersey, Bignor Park, on the front free endpaper. Short marginal tear and a crease to the titlepage, single minute wormhole in the inner margin through the first half of the text block; a very good copy. Brunet V, 554. Graesse VII, 604. Schweiger I, 303. Hoffmann III, 454. Dibdin II, 433. Moss II, 620f. Ebert 21809. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Novae Italiae delineatio.

      - Amsterdam, 1620 circa.

S.n. 1620 - - S.n., S.l. [Geneve] 1620, (4) 441pp. et (4) 140pp. et 364pp. [i.e. 362] et 185pp. (14-1 bl.) (2f. III. Discorsi. IV. I sette libre dell'arte della guerra. V. Dell' asino d'oro. Capitolo dell' occasione. Capitolo di fortuna. Capitolo della ingratitvdine. Capitolo dell' ambitione. Decennale, cioè compendio delle coste fatte in X. anni in Italia. Novella piacevolissima. Mandragola, comedia.

1620 - Defending the rights of the creole and Indians rights of the Americas; requesting citizenship for the natives. 1620. Madrid. Viuda de Alonso Martin. In folio (305 mm x 215 mm). 12 ff. Modern half vellum over boards. A very good copy. 3,000 $ Ortiz de Cervantes, born in Lima, was a Procurator General for Cuzco and Lima; he travelled to Madrid where he had printed one of the earliest manifestations for the creole rights in regards to government in the Indies. That he did with his “Memorial que trata de la perpetuidad de los Encomenderos de Indios del Perú, con juridicion en sus pueblos, medio eficaz para que este Reyno se restaure, conserve, y aumente” (1617). This imprint is harsher and “straitghtforward” in its tone. Furthermore, in more than one aspect its a groundbreaking statement, asking for citizenship for natives and making a strong argument and rightfullness of appointing creoles to positions in the colonial administration and Church Offices.

Francofurti ad Moenum, typis Pauli Iacobi, impensis Ioannis Treudelii, 1620. 4to (252 x 190mm). pp. (8), 160, (12, index), with 138 woodcuts in the text. Contemporary calf, spine with gilt ornaments and gilt lettered label (upper joints cracked but firm). The very scarce first edition, the foundation of modern taxonomic theory, and a classic of descriptive botany. "The descriptions of species in the 'Prodromus theatri botanici' notice all obvious parts of the plant with all possible brevity and in a fixed order; the form of the root, height and form of the stem, characters of the leaves, flowers, fruit, and seed are given in concise sentences seldom occupying more than twenty short lines; the description of a single species is here in fact developed into an art and becomes a diagnosis. A still higher value must be set on the fact, that in Gaspard Bauhin the distinction between species and genus is fully and consciously carried out" (Sachs). The text describes over 600 newly discovered species. This rare work is always prone to some browning, which is also the case in the present copy.//Provenance: Bibliotheca Colbertina on title in contempoary manuscript. The work belonged to Jean-Baptiste Colbert, (1619-1683), famous French statesman.//Stafleu & Cowan 366 & 367.

Only known copy of the first edition of the 1615 version of a rare proclamation by the States of Holland and West Friesland on herring fishery, with a one-page introduction and 35 articles covering fishing, salting, unloading, packing, storing, etc. It includes rules for proper conduct when fishing in another company's waters, and when or where the herring can or cannot be sold. The text is an official proclamation of the States (the provincial assembly), but is signed at the end by Adriaen Duyck (d. 1623), clerk of the Receiver General of the province of Holland from 1600 to his death. Nearly every separately published edition is known only from a single copy, and we have located no other copy of the present edition.Slightly trimmed at the foot, but further wholly untrimmed and with all deckles intact. With small holes in 3 leaves, none touching the text, the title-page slightly dirty and an occasional very small marginal stain, but still in very good condition.

      - Francofurti ad Moenum, typis Pauli Iacobi, impensis Ioannis Treudelii, 1620. 4to (252 x 190mm). This rare work is always prone to some browning, which is also the case in the present copy.Provenance: Bibliotheca Colbertina on title in contempoary manuscript. The work belonged to Jean-Baptiste Colbert, (1619-1683), famous French statesman.Stafleu & Cowan 366 & 367. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

As the author specifically states, his book is intended to popularize the issue of insanity in order to enhance good mental health for the average person. In so doing, Garzoni in fact presents a reliable picture of the contemporary view of mental illness as held by the general public rather than by the medical profession."

Willems 295). Am Ende mit dem Catalogus librorum Arabicorum, "listing most of the works concerned with Arabic published so far. It is one of the sources for the alleged Koran printed in Venice ca. 1520" (Smitskamp 88). - Zenker I, 169; Hoefer 16, 309. - Zwei weitere Veröffentlichungen des Erpenius angebunden: 2.         Il Solimano Tragedia.

Florence: Pietro Cecconcelli, 1620 - Small quarto (220 x 160 mm). Contemporary Italian vellum over stiff pasteboards, spine lettered in gilt, gilt edges. Small inkstamp at foot of title (BC). Vellum soiled, marginal hole to H2, short tear to top edge of H4, small wormhole to lower outer corner from L4 onward, widening from O4 to end, but text never affected, a few minor marks or stains, a very good copy. Engraved title (second state with inscription below the Medici arms and the artist's signature bottom left) and 5 double-page engraved plates by Callot after Giulio Parigi, woodcut printer's device on last leaf verso. First edition of this famous opera about Suleyman the Magnificent's execution of his son Mustafa. "One of the earliest Turkish operas was written in 1619 by the Italian Prospero Bonarelli, whose Il Solimano became the blueprint for many eponymous operas and for other operas that employed elements of its plot" (Berman, German Literature on the Middle East: Discourses and Practices, 1000–1989, p. 115). The magnificent engravings are by Jacques Callot, after the designs of his tutor and colleague, Giulio Parigi, architect and chief designer of courtly festivities under the Grand Duke, Cosimo II de' Medici. "The dramatic finale shows the city of the tyrant Soliman in flames. The moveable scenes – the first in the history of the theatre – picture contemporary Florence. The whole of its effective contrasts of dark and light, seems fantastic, yet it is the rational and realistic portrait of a fantastic, imaginary subject" (Otto Benesch, Artistic and Intellectual Trends from Rubens to Daumier, Cambridge, 1942, p. 17). The book was a great success and went through six editions by 1636. Berlin 4112; Brunet I:1089; Cicognara 1086; Gamba 1810; Lieure 363–8.

[AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] First edition, very rare. It is found more often, even in LIBRARY second and third editions of 1623 and 1629, and especially that of 1633. For example, the National Library of France has 13 copies of embassies, 5 1623, 2 1629, and 6 of 1633, but none of this edition 1620. Bound in full brown sheepskin contemporary. Back to ornate nerves. part of title in red morocco. Double framing net on the boards. Mors cracked head, and tail to the upper joint. With a slash missing on the lower flat. A brown spot on that same dish. Friction. A few yellowed or browned leaves and a lack of paper at a corner of a sheet on the sidelines. Good copy. Ad 1: First edition (first issue) of a very interesting collection of voyages made to Africa and America, translated from the French, Latin and Portuguese originals and edited by Henri Justel (1620-1693). The work is richly illustrated with engravings, some showing Caribbean pottery, and engraved maps of New England, Jamaica , Barbados and Abyssinia. Ad 2: First edition (second issue) of an important work on Constantinople. In 1680 Guillaume-Joseph Grelot, an artist-traveller, having spent some time in Constantinople, first published a book of engravings after his drawings, along with extensive commentary and accounts of his adventures. His book immediately went through several editions. Even his English publisher bragged of Grelot's success with Louis: "The King of France was so pleased with these draughts, that he commanded the author to make them publick, and gave him his letters patents, strictly forbidding any to invade his propriety, by copying them after him". With some small tears in a few plates, but otherwise in good condition, with occasional minor browning along the folds of some plates; 1 view in ad 2 backed with blank paper. Well illustrated accounts of Africa, America and Constantinople.
