        Americae Nova Tabula

Bibliografia: Burden 189; Tooley, Mapping of America, pl. 169. Dimensioni 550x410. One of the best known and sought after seventeenth century maps of America. Blaeu's famous carte a figure map of America is regarded as a high point in Dutch cartography. When first published, around 1618 as a separate issue, the map summarised the most up - to - date cartography and influenced numerous other map publications until mid - century. The publisher, Willem Janszoon, adopted the name Blaeu to avoid confusion with Jan Janszoon and altered his own name on the 3rd state of the map beginning in 1621. The decorative side panels include vivid representations of Native Americans from Virginia, Florida, California (Nove Albions) and other areas in characteristic dress. The panels across the top border offer nine city views including Rio de Janeiro, Mexico City and Havana. California is still shown as a peninsula: only one Great Lake is seen. Developing colonies can be seen along the eastern seaboard of North America, the French in Canada and the English in Virginia (the Jamestown settlement). The results of further exploration by the Spanish along the California coast are also cited on the map. Bibliografia: Burden 189; Tooley, Mapping of America, pl. 169.         Opera Omnia. : Bucolica, Georgica, Aeneis; Ciris et Culex: Cum Commentario Frid. Taubmanni. Curate & edente Christiano Taubmanno Frid. F. Additi sunt Indices necessari.

(Wittenberg), Zacharias Schurerus, 1618. 4to. Bound in a lovely, charming contemporary 3/4 pigskin binding, richly blindtamped to boards - undoubtedly the book's first binding. The binding is dated in the front board - 1620 - and is with the initials of the the original owner "CFRH", namely Christian Frideric Reich(h)elm from Halle in Saxony, who has written his full name and acquisition details to the title-page, stating that the book was bought by him in 1620 (same year as it was bound) and the price that he paid for it. A bit of wear to extremities, but all in all very nice. Woodcut title-vignettes to all three title-pages. A few neat underlinings in the text. A very nice and clean copy with only mild occasional brownspotting. (24), 1064, (78 - indices and errata) pp., 1 blank + 147, (1), (30, -index) pp., 1 blank + 72, (24, -index) pp.. A truly charmning copy, in a dated contemporary binding, of Christain Taubmann's excellent and highly praised Virgil-edition, containing all three parts, the last two of which were also issued separately. The work is praised for Taubmann's excellent corrections and commentaries and also contains his very useful index. Like the owner of the book, Christain Friedrich Reichhelm, Christian Taubmann (1597-1651) was also a noted German jurist. In fact, the two were almost exact contemporaries, Reichmann having been born five years after Taubmann, who died one year after Reichmann. Generally speaking, the two had much in common. The present work was made by the then only 21-year-old jurist and is among his earliest works.Christian Friedrich Reichhelm was a jurist and an author from a good family in Halle. He was born in 1602 and died in 1650. The book was thus acquired (and bound) by him at the age of 18.The main part of the Virgil-text (Bucolica, Georgica, Aeneis) is that of Estienne, whereas the Ciris is based on that of Scaliger and Barth, and the Culex on two old editions mainly corrected by Taubmann's father.         Tractatus secundus de naturae simia seu technica macrocosmi historia in partes undecim divisa.

He sought instead a new understanding of nature based on Christian principles. His guides were primarily the Mosaic books of the Bible and the Hermetic and Neoplatonic works of late antiquity and the Renaissance" (DSB). - DSB V, 48: "the most detailed works on the macrocosm-microcosm universe in the early seventeenth century"; Gardner, Rosicrucian books 218; Thorndike VII, 439; Duveen 222; Zinner 4636; Wüthrich, Merian II, S. 82; Benzing, J. Th. de Bry etc. als Verleger u.

        America rare map - Hondius/Janssonius, 1641.

"America Noviter Delineata"This important map was first published in 1618 by Jodocus Hondius. Cartographically, this map influenced a generation of cartographers and was the basis of understanding the Americas for the first half of the 17th century. When first issued the map was surrounded by four panels, figures on the sides and Views on the top and bottom. The plate was trimmed, removing the panels by Henricus Hondius c.1630. The map had a long life appearing in atlases up to 1665,This map is noted for its elegant engraving and pleasing layout, with fleets of ships and sea monsters, and two inset maps one showing the Arctic Circle and the other showing Greenland. The North Pole depicts Frobisher's theory of the Northwest Passage and the South Pole shows the long-held notion of the mythical southern continent. North America retains the peninsular California and the East Coast is beginning to take shape, although it still lacks detail in the mid-Atlantic region. In the Southwest the famous seven cities of Cibola appear on the banks of a large lake. In South America, there is a large inland sea and two engraved scenes, one of which details a cannibalistic feast. Two stylized insets of the two polar regions are enclosed in strapwork cartouches. Size: 37,5 x 49,8 cm (plus margins). The copperplate that produced this map was originally prepared by Jodocus Hondius Jr. in 1618. This issue, known in three examples, has decorative borders on all four sides. There is a 2nd state in c1629-30 with no decorative borders.  A 3rd state was produced by Henricus Hondius in 1631. The map depicted here is the 4th state with the imprint of Janssonius and the addition of the date of 1641. There was a 5th state in 1652 with the date and the Hondius imprint removed. (Burden, p. 235-6).This map has German text on the verso describing America. This map is from Johannes Janssonius' Atlas of 1646-57 with a signature on the verso of "Aaa", based on van der Krogt (p. 715).  An earlier version of this map was produced by Henricus Hondius in 1631. Through the collaboration between Hondius and Janssonius (they were brothers-in-law), Hondius' map was replaced by Janssonius' map in 1641. Henricus Hondius had died in 1638.Reference:  Burden map #192.Size: 37,6 x 49,9 cm.Price: € 2.900,- (excl VAT/BTW).

[16], xxxiii, 682 [i.e. 684], [48] pages, [1] engraving.. 1618 Saint John of the Cross challenges Luis de León for the title of Spain's greatest poet and most critics would unhesitatingly describe him as the greatest mystic that Christendom has known since the Renaissance" (E. Allison Peers, Mystics of Spain, 2002 Dover reprint, p. 23). In this stout volume are his three most important mystical works: Noche oscura del alma, Llama de amor viva, and Subida al Monte Carmelo. Supplementary matter includes "Relacion sumaria del autor deste libro, y de su vida, y virtudes" (by Fray José de Jesús María, sometimes wrongly attributed to Fray Diego de Jesús) and "Apuntamientos advertencias en tres discursos para mas facil inteligencia . . . de las obras . . . de Iuan de la Cruz . . . por Diego de Iesus." The volume begins with an engraved title-page by Diego Astor bearing the coat of arms of Cardinal Borja, the work's dedicatee; opposite p. iii and also by Astor, a full-page engraving shows the Saint before an altar offering his works to Christ; and opposite "fol. 1" (actually p. 1) of the "Subida" is the => emblematical engraving by Astor that represents the mystic way from humblest aspiration to the summit of Perfection. The text is printed in roman, single-column with chapter summaries in italic, and there is a typographic sectional title-page for each of the saint's three works. A detailed index completes the presentation. Maria, diciembre 1915." Searches of NUC and WorldCat find four copies in U.S. libraries, two in Mexican institutions, and eight in Continental repositories. Curiously, COPAC fails to find any copies in the U.K., not even in the British Library. Additionally, Miss Penney's catalogue of printed books in the Hispanic Society fails to list a copy. Contemporary limp vellum, evidence of ties. Text block once loosening, now reattached to binding. Occasional, light, scattered foxing. => Very good.

A Treatise of Blazing Starres in Generall

Bernard Alsop for Henry Bell, London 1618 - OF PARTICULAR ASTRONOMICAL AND ASTROLOGICAL INTEREST Small 4to.18 unnumbered ll. Black Letter with some Roman. Woodcut illustration on tp. of a comet, woodcut headpieces and initials. A very good clean copy in modern calf. Second edition of Abraham Fleming’s first English translation of seventeen chapters of Nausea’s Libri Mirabilium Septem concerning ‘blazing starres’, first published in 1577, and again in 1618, to coincide with the comets of those years. "He (Nausea) raises the question whether anyone can foreknow the future from marvels of rare occurrence and answers it in the affirmative. He doubts, however, whether marvels which are entirely natural, like the magnet attracting iron or the salamander living in fire, can be signs of the future, since they always act in the same way and therefore cannot be special signs of unusual events.", Thorndike. The work starts with a general description of ‘blazing starres’, their names, origins, and a catalogue of the shape of their trails: ('speare', 'sword', 'tunne', 'horne', lampe' a 'horse maine'). "I find some disagreement betweene Philosophers and Astronomers", Nausea writes, concerning what actually produces them in the heavens: some say it is the conjunction of two stars, Aristotle believes a comets is a dry vapour reacting with the upper region of the sky. Nausea then discusses "the good and evil which blazing stars doe prognosticate" citing past examples and referring specifically to the comet of 1531 and what its significance might be, and moves on to a discussion of the ‘starre’ that led the Three Wise Men and a collection of ancient opinions on them. He concludes with a chapter on whether such evils as the blazing star might predict can be prevented or avoided. Nausea, a theologian of Wurtemberg, doctor of laws, and preacher who became Bishop of Vienna in 1541, was writing specifically about the comet of 1531 but used the occasion to write about comets and their interpretation in general, giving rise to the work’s republication at the advent of future ‘blazing starres’. Given that Nausea’s eventual conclusion was that the end of the world was nigh, its republication forty years later is curious. On the other hand, given public interest in comet coverage, combined with their inconclusive origins, comets became central to ongoing debates between Copernican scientists and their rivals. Aristotelian cosmology could incorporate unpredictable comets as products of the layer of fire he believed to be above the terrestrial sphere; Copernicus was nearly silent on the issue. In 1623 Galileo argued (based on comets observed around the time this work was published) that comets were purely optical phenomena. Fleming was a renowned antiquary, publishing over fifty translations, including another part of Nausea’s Libri Miribilium Septem on earthquakes. A good copy of an uncommon work in English of particular astronomical and astrological interest. STC 18413.3. Lowndes IV.1654. (edit. of 1577). Thorndike V 321-2, VI 491-2. Not in Houzeau and Lancaster or Honeyman. Barker and Bernstein "The Role of Comets in the Copernican Revolution" Studies in History and Philosophy of Science Part A 19 (3):299-319.

LUDOVICUS QUARTUS IMPERATOR. Defensus; Bzovius Jniuriarium postulatus, Quòd eundem Divae memoriae Imperatorem Serenissimorum Bavariae Ducum progenitorem, contra ius, fas, aequum, verum in mendosissimis annalibus suis infectatus, gravissimis calumnijs onerârit, ab Joanne Georgio Heruuarto ab Hohenburg. Accessit mantissa aliorum Bzovij errorum.

Apud Nicolaum Henricum, Monachii 1618 - Prima edizione. Testo latino. Cm.23x18. Pg.(22), VIII, 536. Legatura in mz.pergamena con piatti marmorizzati. Tassello in pelle con titoli in oro al dorso. tagli spruzzati. Capilettera ornati. > British Library, "Catalogue of books printed in German.", II, H 974. 1100 gr.

Paris: Chez M. Gobert, 1618. 8vo. 4 folding maps, 4 folding plates. (Signature "E" supplied from another copy). Contemporary vellum, manuscript title on spine, modern morocco-backed slipcase Provenance: John Locke (signature and inscription) John Locke's copy of the rare first Paris edition of "Willem Schouten's voyage around the world, during which Cape Horn was discovered and rounded for the first time" (Hill): a landmark voyage in the history of western exploration. Schouten's voyage was one of the great early voyages of discovery and only the third circumnavigation. Undertaken in 1615 and lasting until 1617, this important expedition succeded in its primary objective which was to find an alternative route to the rich sources of wealth in the Pacific. The Dutch East India Company had a strangle-hold on the two known routes: via the Cape of Good Hope and through the Straits of Magellan. A rival group of aggressive Dutch traders, formed the "Compagnie Australe", and eqiuiped the expedition with discovered and rounded Cape Horn, named after the Dutch town of Hoorn where the sponsors were based. In addition, the expedition explored the Pacific coast of South America, pursued the search for Terra Australis, and proved that Tierra del Fuego was not an island. Principle among the Hoorn merchant benefactors was Isaac Le Maire, whose son, Jacob Le Maire, was charged as the director of the enterprise. Jacob named the Le Maire strait in honour of his father. "The ship Eendracht , while crossing the Pacific, discovered some of the Tuamotu Islands, the Hoorn Islands, the Schouten Islands, and visited New Guinea, the Moluccas, and Batavia. When Schouten and Le Maire arrived in Ternate, their ship was confiscated by the Dutch East India Company [as they were unable to convince the authorities that they had arrived by a third unrestricted route] ... The Dutch governor of Batavia sent them back to the Netherlands with Joris van Spilbergen ... Thus these famous navigators returned home together. Sadly, Jacob Le Maire did not share the honors, as he died of fever at Mauritius on the return trip" (Hill [2004] p.547). This edition contains four maps and four plates: 1. map of the world in two hemispheres with surrounding portraits; 2. map of Tierra del Fuego; 3. map of the South Sea; 4. plate of a Polynesian sailing a canoe; 5. plate bearing the inscription, "Isle de Cocos"; 6. plate bearing the inscription, "Isle de Hoorn"; 7. plate of the "Indian kings" and their village; 8. map of Nova Guinea. This copy has the pagination errors on pages 56, 215, and 179, that are not found in all copies. Schouten's work was originally published in Amsterdam in 1618 by Willem Jansz Blaeu. Though printed in his name, Schouten was most likely not the author of the present work, and it was probably compiled for him by Blaeu from the ships' logs. The work proved to be exceedingly popular, "no fewer than thirty-eight editions of the work were printed in Holland alone between the year 1618 and 1766" (Church). This copy has the additional interest of having belonged to the famous philosopher John Locke, and includes his ink ownership inscription on the front pastedown. In front of his signature Locke has made the notation "b" which, according to The library of John Locke by Harrison and Laslett, was an inventory mark put into books in or about 1697 and not to be found in any books acquired after that date. Locke has noted at the foot of the titlepage that this is a duplicate copy. A translation of part of Locke's epitaph reads: "bred a scholar, he made his learning subservient only to the cause of truth", a dictum that led to a period of exile in Amsterdam. Locke "is widely regarded as one of the most influential Enlightenment thinkers and contributors to liberal theory. His writings influenced Voltaire and Rousseau, many Scottish Enlightenment thinkers, as well as the American revolutionaries. This influence is reflected in the American Declaration of Independence."
