[Attributes: Hard Cover]

        America rare map - Hondius/Janssonius, 1641.

"America Noviter Delineata"This important map was first published in 1618 by Jodocus Hondius. Cartographically, this map influenced a generation of cartographers and was the basis of understanding the Americas for the first half of the 17th century. When first issued the map was surrounded by four panels, figures on the sides and Views on the top and bottom. The plate was trimmed, removing the panels by Henricus Hondius c.1630. The map had a long life appearing in atlases up to 1665,This map is noted for its elegant engraving and pleasing layout, with fleets of ships and sea monsters, and two inset maps one showing the Arctic Circle and the other showing Greenland. The North Pole depicts Frobisher's theory of the Northwest Passage and the South Pole shows the long-held notion of the mythical southern continent. North America retains the peninsular California and the East Coast is beginning to take shape, although it still lacks detail in the mid-Atlantic region. In the Southwest the famous seven cities of Cibola appear on the banks of a large lake. In South America, there is a large inland sea and two engraved scenes, one of which details a cannibalistic feast. Two stylized insets of the two polar regions are enclosed in strapwork cartouches. Size: 37,5 x 49,8 cm (plus margins). The copperplate that produced this map was originally prepared by Jodocus Hondius Jr. in 1618. This issue, known in three examples, has decorative borders on all four sides. There is a 2nd state in c1629-30 with no decorative borders. A 3rd state was produced by Henricus Hondius in 1631. The map depicted here is the 4th state with the imprint of Janssonius and the addition of the date of 1641. There was a 5th state in 1652 with the date and the Hondius imprint removed. (Burden, p. 235-6).This map has German text on the verso describing America. This map is from Johannes Janssonius' Atlas of 1646-57 with a signature on the verso of "Aaa", based on van der Krogt (p. 715). An earlier version of this map was produced by Henricus Hondius in 1631. Through the collaboration between Hondius and Janssonius (they were brothers-in-law), Hondius' map was replaced by Janssonius' map in 1641. Henricus Hondius had died in 1638.Reference: Burden map #192.Size: 37,6 x 49,9 cm.Price: ?2.900,- (excl VAT/BTW).

Opera, cvm Observationibvs ac Cum Commentariis tam veterum quàm recentiorum Interpretum. Emericvs Crvcevs recensvit et novo Commentario Statii Sylvas illustravit.

Parisiis, sumptibus Thomae Blaise, 1618. - 3 tomes en 2 volumes in-4. 4ff. 741pp. + 2ff. 588pp. 6ff. + 112pp. Rousseurs. Bon exemplaire. Graesse, t.6 p.480 - Manque à Brunet. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

How He Trevailed on Foot from London to Edenborough in Scotland, Not Carrying Any Money To or Fro, Neither Begging, Borrow or Asking Meate, Drinke or Lodging. London: Printed by Edw: All de, at the charges of the Author, 1618. Slim, square octavo, early 20th-century full brown morocco, marbled endpapers; pp. [54]. $4800.First edition of Taylor’s narrative of his travels in Scotland as a man without means, told in poetry and prose, handsomely bound by Zaehnsdorf.John Taylor was widely known as “The Water-Poet,” due to his apprenticeship to a waterman, later service in the Essex fleet, and career as a Thames waterman, combined with his reputation as a prolific pamphleteer. Perhaps inspired by Ben Jonson’s travels, Taylor undertook a journey that led to the completion of this work. “In 1618, he undertook to travel on foot from London to Edinburgh without taking a penny in his pocket, nor ‘begging, borrowing, or asking meat, drink, or lodging.’ He went, however, far beyond Edinburgh, penetrating even to the wilds of Braemar, and there he became the guest of the Earl of Mar at a hunting encampment among the hills. The sport inspired him with two sonnets. On his return to Leith he met Ben Jonson, who, although suspecting that Taylor’s intention might be to turn his own expedition into ridicule, gave him a piece of gold ‘of two-and-twenty shillings’ wherewith to drink his health in England. Having previously obtained 1600 names for his accounts of this tour, which he called The Pennyles Pilgrimage (1618), Taylor felt justified in having 4500 copies printed, but more than half the subscribed refused to pay on the ground that Taylor had not observed the conditions of the journey. Thereupon Taylor lashed the ‘defaulters’ to his hearts content in a diverting satire” published the next year (DNB). During the course of his active writing career, Taylor’s wit and entertaining narratives secured him the respect and patronage of prominent literary figures. Lowndes, 2588. Wither to Prior 850. Pollard & Redgrave 23784. A few expert paper repairs, very mild soiling to text, a bit of toning to spine. A handsome copy in near-fine condition.

        Usage du compas du proportion.

Paris, Michel Daniel, 1618 - 8vo (165 x 100 mm), pp [viii] 90 [6], with two engraved plates of the proportional compass and several woodcut illustrations in text; some faint marginal waterstaining on last leaves, otherwise a very good copy in contemporary French mottled calf, gilt floral ornaments on spine.First edition, rare, of Henrion's treatise on the proportional compass, the earliest French work on the subject. Henrion attributed the invention of the compass to Jacques Alleaume, who had constructed a version of it in Paris.'Henrion had seen a sector, made by Jacques Alleaume, in Paris. Seven years later, in 1623, Edmund Gunter published his work on the sector with no attribution of its invention to others. Henrion assumed that Alleaume had invented the sector and claimed any improvements as his own. It is obvious that Henrion was not aware of the earlier publications of Hood, Galileo, and several others. He goes on to claim that an unnamed individual (Gunter) had stolen the idea for the sector from him. In this work, Henrion describes a very simple sector made in 1616 by Daniel Chorez, a major French instrument maker of the day. This sector had only four scales (lines of lines, chords, planes and solids).'This work, like Gunter's in England, was the one that introduced the sector into France. It was well received and went through at least twenty different editions' (Tomash and Williams). It has been asserted that 'Denis Henrion' was in fact a pseudonym of the Baron Cl

Graesse V, 127. - Second Collected Strassburg Edition with added materials. "Paracelsus was one of the most controversial and dazzling figures on the threshold between the Middle Ages to Modern Times. Trained as a physician and surgeon, he tried to overcome certain medical and philosophical concepts common at his time. He replaced them with a natural philosophy comprising a peculiar mixture of Neoplatonic lore and Christian thought based on the Biblical word. Deeply influenced by the ideas of medieval alchemy, both theoretical and practical, he believed in the importance of experience in contrast to mere speculative theories. Following alchemical guidelines, he introduced a number of new medicinal preparations which would become influential for centuries. His attempt to explain bodily processes as alchemical operations smoothed the way for a new insight into the physiological functioning of the human body. Disappointed by the lack of approval by his colleagues, Paracelsus at times resorted to theology, wandering about as a lay-preacher, philosophically interpreting the Bible and writing religious tracts. During his lifetime only a very few of his writings appeared in print, the bulk to be edited after his death, between 1560 and 1600. Surpassed in Early-Modern times only by Martin Luther, Paracelsus as a German language writer produced a multiplicity of treatises, the medical and natural philosophical tracts equaling the theological ones in number." (Urs Leo Gantenbein, The Zurich Paracelsus Project). Very Good.

Very Good.

Amsterdam: Guillaume Janson Blaeu, 1618. Small quarto, with nine engraved folding maps and plates, in period style crushed morocco, spine gilt in compartments between raised bands. The first edition in French of this rare and important book, preceded only by the original Dutch versions of the same year (Amsterdam and Arnhem issues). Very many editions were to follow. This is the celebrated account of the Le Maire and Schouten expedition westward across the Pacific to the Indies, during which they discovered a new navigable passage south of Cape Horn. The maps, and particularly the well-known folding chart of a largely empty Pacific Ocean, demonstrate the magnitude of the achievement of Schouten and Le Maire in crossing the ocean from east to west, in order to reach the Spice islands without straying into the territories controlled by the monopolistic Dutch East India Company.Schouten and Le Maire named Cape Horn when they rounded it in 1616, visited several of the Tuamotus, and were the first westerners to visit the Tonga islands. They then coasted New Ireland and New Guinea on their way to the Spice Islands and eventually Batavia. The importance of the book to contemporary geographical understanding cannot be overstated; it was 'the last seventeenth-century expedition to search for Terra Australis from the east' (Schilder). The voyage was made under the auspices of the newly formed group of Dutch traders known as the Australian Company, set up to compete with the Dutch East India Company and to search for the elusive Terra Australis. It was of great importance for the future history of discovery in that it proved the existence of a passage from the southern Atlantic into the Pacific, south of the Straits of Magellan round Cape Horn, and therefore finally demonstrated that the supposed Southern Continent, contrary to the maps of Ortelius and Mercator, did not extend to the Straits of Magellan. This edition, produced in Amsterdam by the publisher and cartographer Willem Blaeu, is one of two variant French-language issues of 1618 noted by the bibliographer Tiele (no priority has been assigned). Within a few years the account was frequently reprinted, indeed Tiele identifies as many as 38 early editions of the Schouten narrative printed in the Netherlands alone (Latin, Spanish and English editions appeared soon afterwards). Another French-language edition was printed in Paris later in the same year. Some light staining and a blemish in a few upper margins but a very good copy.

Venezia Venice Almagià, p. 57; Perini, p. 71; S. Later copy ca.1780.In 1609, English explorer Henry Hudson re-discovered the region when he sailed his ship the Halve Maen (Half Moon in Dutch) into New York Harbor while searching for the Northwest Passage to the Orient for his employer the Dutch East India Company. He proceeded to sail up what he named the North River, also called the Mauritis River, and now known as the Hudson River, to the site of the present-day New York State capital of Albany in the belief that it might represent an oceanic tributary. When the river narrowed and was no longer saline, he realized it wasn't a sea passage and sailed back downriver. He made a ten-day exploration of the area and claimed the region for his employer. In 1614 the area between Cape Cod and Delaware Bay would be claimed by the Netherlands and called Nieuw-Nederland (New Netherland).A permanent European presence in New Netherland began in 1624 ? making New York the 12th oldest continuously occupied European-established settlement in the continental United States ? with the founding of a Dutch fur trading settlement on Governors Island. In 1625 construction was started on a citadel and a Fort Amsterdam on Manhattan Island, later called New Amsterdam (Nieuw Amsterdam). The colony of New Amsterdam was centered at the site which would eventually become Lower Manhattan. - vita of the artist: Nicolaes Visscher I (1618 -1679) Amsterdam was a Dutch engraver, cartographer and publisher. Erste Ausgabe, komplett selten. Knuttel 3005; Rogge III, p. 13. Enlarged second edition of a pamphlet on the apparition of a comet in the year 1618. The first edition was published only a few days after the first sighting of the comet on November 27, describing the comet in all its details. The present second edition also includes observations made from 17 to 31 December. According to the pamphlet, the comet was an omen of misfortune, giving examples from earlier comets and their subsequent disasters, beginning with a comet which appeared after God had created the world to the comet of 1577, which was followed by several bloody wars. The author emphasizes that this comet must be a sign of God's wrath, and prays for God's forgiveness at the end.Browned, title-page trimmed very closely to the engraving, slightly shaving the image, otherwise in good condition.
