Vita R.P. Josephi Anchieatae Societatis Jesu sacerdotis in Brasilia defuncti.

1617 - First German edition. 12mo. Contemporary vellum, lacking 3 of 4 ties, later morocco label gilt to spine. [iv], 427, [2]pp. Cologne, J. Kinckius, Printed in the same year as the first French edition, and based on a manuscript by Pedro Rodriguez (a fellow Jesuit), this is the first biography of José de Anchieta (1534-1597). Both 1617 editions are rare. Howgego provides a neat synopsis of some of Anchieta's achievements: his ?heroic missionary work among the Indians won for him the title 'Apostle of Brazil'. He produced numerous instructive works, as well as the first descriptive account of Brazilian plants and animals and the first grammar of the Tupi language. Recalled to Bahia from an expedition during military operations intended to suppress the Tamuin uprising, he was ordained a priest . [and] subsequently appointed rector of the College of St. Vincent (1567) and provincial of Brazil (1577-87).? Born on Tenerife, Anchieta studied at Coimbra. His dedication to austerity was such that in 1553 he was sent to Brazil so that he might recover his health. He initially spent four months at Bahia before heading south to Sao Paolo. He travelled further to Rio de Janeiro, Espirito Santo and Reritiba (now called Anchieta). He was made a saint in 2014.

First edition. A rare work on Japanese-Western affairs in the early 17th century; it stands as an early source book to the history of Japan. The history spans mostly through the years 1612 - 1615, and devotes itself to the progress of the Faith in the region, the Japanese, the causes of the persecution of Christians & converts, and the expulsion of the missionaries -with its effects- following the Tokugawa Ieyasu edict of 1614, which ordered the expulsion of the missionaries and marked the beginning of the end of the Christian Church in Japan. The work contains a list of the Christian martyrs from 1574 - 1615 and the location of the Jesuit missions in Japan. For Japanese history, this is also a most relevant work, as it is written during the years of the beginning of the Shogunate that would control the country for two centuries, ending a period of unrest and civil war by the different Daimyos. "Muy raro" (Palau). Piñeyro (1560 - 1620) was a Spanish Jesuit missionary; he is believed to have been in Japan during the years of gradually worsening relationships between the Shogunate and the Christian Church. Cordier Japonica, 290. Palau 226932. Streit V, 1163.

Second edition. The illustration is comprised of an engraved title vignette showing a celestial globe, and 8 full-page plates, all after the drawings of Potgieter, showing a variety of subjects, including a pair of Magellan Indians with ships in the background and a group of kneeling Indians, a group of hunters catching penguins, a view of Santiago de Chile, amongst others. The first edition was published in 1600 under the title Wijdtloopigh verhael van tgende de vijf schepen, and was later also reproduced in Colijn´s collection of voyages, Oost-Indische end West-Indische voyagien (1619), later in an abridgement in Commelin´s Begin ende Voortgang, and before all, in 1601 as volume 9 of De Bry´s collection of voyages, the Great Voyages, published along with the Acosta. Regarding Weert´s voyage, "In 1598 he sailed with the fleet of Jacques Mahu... During the voyage, De Weert, who had been transferred to the ship Liefde, was separated from the fleet in the Strait of Magellan... En route [back to Amsterdam] he [Weert] sighted what were probably the Jason Islands (...), off the Falkland Islands, which were thereafter known for some time after as the Sebaldes, or 'Sebald's Islands'. Unable to land to replenish his supplies, De Weert eventually reached Holland in July 1600 with only thirty-six of his original 105 crew left alive. He had at least brought home the only ship of the fleet to survive the voyage" (Howgego W21). Potgieter (1574 - 1627) was a Dutch surgeon who embarked in 1598 in a fateful Dutch expedition to the East commanded by Jacques Mahu, which turned out to be the first Dutch expedition of the Strait of Magellan, his ship, captained by Sebald de Weert, separated from the rest of the party due to storms, which caused the discovery of the small islands inhabited by penguins (Henze V, 469); during this period, they accidentally encountered the fleet of Olivier Van Noort, sailing on a different expedition which resulted in the first Dutch circumnavigation, Weert tried to join, however his crew were already unfit to keep up with van Noort´s fleet, thus deciding to return to Amsterdam. The expedition encountered other issues, and by the time they returned to Amsterdam, almost two thirds of the crew had perished. Potgieter barely got to see the Pacific before the desition of returning to Amsterdam was taken, the rest of the ships were either lost, imprisoned in Valparaiso, or their crews decimated by hostile Patagonians natives. Very rare, we can find no copies of this edition having sold in over 50 years. Sabin 64582. Alden-L. 617/117. Tiele 545.

Pallas Rhaetica, amata et togata. Ubi primae ac priscae in alpina Rhariae verus situs, belle & politica, cum aliis memorabilibus.

Basel, Johan Jacob Genath, 1617, - in-4to, 8 Blatt (inkl. Titelblatt in typographischer Bordüre - Epistola dedicatoria - in historiam Rhaeticam) + 298 S. + 23 Bl. (Index), etwas gebräunt u. stockfleckig, -teilw. leicht wasserrandig, Besitzverm. a.d. Titel. Blindgepr. Prgt. d. Zt. (Gebrauchssp., Rücken erneuert, Schließbänder fehlen). Schönes Exemplar. Erste Ausgabe. Early twentieth century vellum backed marble-paper covered boards, maroon morocco gilt-stamped spine label, edges red, marbled endpapers. Old owner’s name on front free endpaper, stamps of Bibliothek des Goetheanum [Dornach, Switzerland – named after Johann Wolfgang von Goethe], on endpaper and inserted plates (on blank versos). Very good. First edition, second impression of part I; ‘second’ edition of part II. Though the first title-page is unchanged and has 1617 as the printing date, it has been widely accepted that the first volume was reissued with some corrections to accompany the stated ‘second edition’ of volume two. Although usually found with the second title-page in the revised version with the top architectural border removed, unlike this copy which has the border intact. ¶ “Fludd has been characterized as ‘a philosopher, physician, anatomist, physicist, chemist, mathematician and mechanician,’ and credited with ‘a rare gift of observation in the exact sciences.’ But he still thought it possible and advisable to combine with this science and medicine not only a cloak of religion but also much of the occult science that had come down from the past: magic and cabala, astrology and alchemy, physiognomy and chiromancy, geometry and weather signs. Natural, preternatural, supernatural, and things contrary to nature, were all closely related and even confused by him. Magic was science, and nature a mystery.” (Thorndike). In the second part he dealt extensively with math, music, geometry, perspective, painting, military art, machinery, sundials, cosmography, astrology and geomancy. THE MAGIC OF SCIENCE, THE SCIENCE OF MAGIC – HISTORY OF THE TWO WORLDS: MACROCOSM & MICROCOSM. “The first of Fludd’s philosophical works to appear was the account of the macrocosm and the microcosm, entitled Utriusque cosmi é historia. It consists in two massive folios which are copiously illustrated with remarkable mystical emblems representing relationships between man, the cosmos, and the godhead. It is very likely that Fludd himself was the draughtsman of these illustrations with their recurrent geometrical motifs of concentric circles, triangles, pyramids, hemispheres, blazing suns, and the interplay of areas of dark and light. The significance of the emblems is revealed in accompanying texts, which bring together quotations from the Bible and hermetic lore. In these volumes Fludd expresses both his adherence to a Judaeo-Christian interpretation of world history based on the text of the Bible and his hostility to the learning of the universities in the form of Aristotelian natural philosophy and Galenic medicine. Fludd’s originality lay in his revival of the fifteenth-century neoplatonism of Ficino and Pico and their sources in the corpus hermeticum, and his uniting of these with an alchemical account of the creation based on a literal reading of the book of Genesis. The major explanatory mechanism of the workings and order of the world is the parallel between macrocosm and microcosm. Man is revealed to be the ‘ape of nature’, imitating and completing her work through the exercise of geometry, music, memory, astrology, physiognomy, chiromancy, and the mechanical arts, including cosmography, painting, and the art of warfare; all of these are in some sense founded on number. Fludd’s metaphysics postulates a complex and all-embracing correspondence between the world of spirits and the physical world; this entailed opposition to Copernicanism. For Fludd the sun, source of heat, light, and spirit, goes round the earth and vivifies it, just as the Holy Spirit vivifies man.” (Oxford DNB). REFERENCES: J.B. Although usually found with the second title-page in the revised version with the top architectural border removed, unlike this copy which has the border intact. ¶ “Fludd has been characterized as ‘a philosopher, physician, anatomist, physicist, chemist, mathematician and mechanician,' and credited with ‘a rare gift of observation in the exact sciences.' But he still thought it possible and advisable to combine with this science and medicine not only a cloak of religion but also much of the occult science that had come down from the past: magic and cabala, astrology and alchemy, physiognomy and chiromancy, geometry and weather signs. “The first of Fludd's philosophical works to appear was the account of the macrocosm and the microcosm, entitled Utriusque cosmi é historia. Fludd's originality lay in his revival of the fifteenth-century neoplatonism of Ficino and Pico and their sources in the corpus hermeticum, and his uniting of these with an alchemical account of the creation based on a literal reading of the book of Genesis. The major explanatory mechanism of the workings and order of the world is the parallel between macrocosm and microcosm. Man is revealed to be the ‘ape of nature', imitating and completing her work through the exercise of geometry, music, memory, astrology, physiognomy, chiromancy, and the mechanical arts, including cosmography, painting, and the art of warfare; all of these are in some sense founded on number. Fludd's metaphysics postulates a complex and all-embracing correspondence between the world of spirits and the physical world; this entailed opposition to Copernicanism. For Fludd the sun, source of heat, light, and spirit, goes round the earth and vivifies it, just as the Holy Spirit vivifies man.” (Oxford DNB). REFERENCES: J.B.         Memoria artificialis ... Omnibus litterarum et sapientiae amantibus luci donate, una cum clavicula illam legendi, modum aperiente. Arnoldi Backhusii Lubecensis.Cologne, Wilhelmus Friessus, 1643. 12mo. With engraved title-page. Contemporary vellum.

VD17 14:631160D (2 copies); Yates, Art of memory, p. 301. Very rare third edition of Johannes Paepp's detailed commentary on Schenkel's Ars memoria , first published in 1617 as Schenckelius detectus, seu memoria artificialis hactenus occultata . The Dutch humanist Lambert Schenkel (1547-1625) was a great master of the art of memory and his teachings were so efficient that he was once accused of heresy by the Catholic Church. "Schenkel had a disciple and imitator, one Johannes Paepp. The works on memory of this Paepp are deserving of rather careful attention because he plays a role which may be vulgarly described as letting the cat out of the bag. He, as he describes it, 'detects Schenkel' or reveals the secret of the occult memory hidden in Schenkel's books. This purpose is stated in the title of his first book …. And he continued the good work of 'detecting Schenkel' in two subsequent publications" (Yates). While the present third edition names "Arnoldi Backhusy" on the title-page, he appears to have done nothing except add the dedication to the physician Johannes Meiboom: the main text largely matches the second edition. With a 1659 owner's inscription and a library stamp. A very good copy, with the fore-edge margin of the title-page folded inward and a minor water stain throughout in the lower margin. Binding very good as well.

The story of this horn (which was just one of other horns in the posession of the church - the Munster owned also a ‘hornÂ’ of a narwhale) and the role it played as an exhibition object in the church became just recently told in detail by Stefan Laube in his work: ‘Von der Reliquie zum Ding.
