Tabula Russiae ex autographo, quod delineandum curavit Foedor filius Tzaris Boris desumta; et ad fluvios Dwinam, Zuchanam, aliaque loca, quatum ex tabulis et notitiis ad nos delatis fieri potunt, amplificata: ac Magno Domino, Tzari, et Magno Duci Michaeli Foedrowits omnium Rußorum, Autocratori Wolodimeriae, Moscoviae et Novogardiae, Tzari Cazaniae, Tzari Astracaniae, Tzari Siberiae, Domino Plescoviae Magno Duci Smolenscoviae, Otweriae, Iugoriae, Permiae, Wiatkiae, Bulgariae etc: Item Domino et Mogno Duci Novogardiae Inferioris etc: Domino Rgionum Iveriae Kartalinie et Groesiniae Tzari etc: dedicata ab Hesselo Gerardo M.DC.XIIII. Example of the third state, published by Joannes Blaeu, Amsterdam 1660 ca. Fine old color example of Hessel Gerritsz's map of Russia, with the large inset of Moscow and plan of Archangelsckagoroda. Blaeu’s reissue of Hessel Gerritsz’s rare and influential map of Russia. This fine map was compiled from manuscripts brought back from Russia, by Isaac Massa to whom the large inset plan of Moscow is said to be attributed. The map was first issued by Hessel Gerritsz in 1613. Blaeu published it after acquiring the plate after Gerritsz’s death in 1632. This edition has Dutch text on the verso. This superb map has many interesting and decorative features, including; a detailed inset plan of Moscow, complete with a seventeen letter key of prominent public buildings and churches; a compass rose and a galleon in the Caspian Sea; a small inset view of the northerly port of Archangel; three Russian men in local dress and a magnificent map title and dedication. The map has a very important place in the history of Russia. As mentioned in the cartouche, the draft was made personally by the Czar of Russia Feodor II Godunov (1589 – 1605), while he was only in his mid-teens. Feodor, a son of Czar Boris Godunov, was a highly intelligent and promising young ruler of Russia, known for his fine education. He was murdered by his opponents in 1605 when he was only 16 years old. Schilder, MCN IV, S. 78f.; Bagrow/C. S. 58 u. vgl. S. 52ff.; Koeman II, 1800:2.2. Dimensioni 575 480mm

Hechos de Don García Hurtado de Mendoça, Marqués de Cañete...

Madrid: Imprenta Real, 1613. Small quarto, with an engraved title; modern morocco. A prime source for the history of Mendaña and Quiros. Mendaña's discovery of the Solomons in 1568 is narrated (pp. 228-37), and there is a long account of his second voyage (pp. 238-90), which was despatched from Peru in 1595 to colonise the Solomons and to continue the search for the Southern Continent. Although Mendaña failed to rediscover the Solomons and died along with many of his crew - the chief pilot, Quiros, finally guiding the survivors to safety in the Philippines - his second voyage is especially significant marking the first discovery of an important Polynesian island group, the Marquesas (named "Las Marquesas de Mendoça" after the viceroy) and led directly to Quiros's own expedition of 1605 and his celebrated quest for Terra Australis Incognita.Suárez de Figueroa's account is based on the manuscript Narrative of his friend Quiros, who had suggested him to the King in 1610 as chronicler for the proposed expedition to the Southern Continent; Celsus Kelly has established that Suárez de Figueroa 'incorporates as his own many phrases, paragraphs and even at times entire pages, except for minor alterations, from the 'Narrative' of Quiros on the Mendaña 1567 and 1595 voyages. For this he must surely have received Quiros's permission since they were both in Madrid at that time...'. This is one of two principal contemporary printed sources for Mendaña's momentous voyage, the other being Quiros's report to Don Antonio de Morga published in the exceedingly rare Sucesos de las Islas Filipinas, Mexico, 1609The text, an account of the deeds of Don García Hurtado de Mendoça (captain-general of Chile and from 1590-96 viceroy of Peru), was commissioned by his family; it describes the wars against the Araucano Indians in Chile and Don García's rule as viceroy; the incursions of Drake, Cavendish and Hawkins are touched upon. This is the first of two issues of the first edition (a second issue appeared three years later). This has always been an extremely rare book, and at least two famous collectors had enough trouble finding it to write about the difficulty: Alexander Dalrymple states in his Historical Collection that he had 'not been able to procure a copy of Figueroa' until, when his first volume was in the press in 1769, he acquired a copy 'from Spain' and was able to add the final section to his book; and Rex Nan Kivell wrote to Bjarne Kroepelien (quoted in the Kroepelien catalogue): 'I was delighted to get your list of books and am very envious of them, particularly... your Suárez de Figueroa... [which] I have been hunting for twenty years'. With occasional light spotting internally, but a fine copy in a modern binding.

        English Husbandman

1613. MARKHAM, Gervase. The English Husbandman. London: T.S. for John Browne, 1613. WITH: Cheape and Good Husbandry for the Well-Ordering of all Beasts, and Fowls. London: T.S. for Roger Jackson, 1623. WITH: HERESBACH, Conrad. Foure bookes of husbandrie. London: John Wight, 1586. WITH: HARTLIB, Samuel. The Compleat Huband-man. London: Edward Brewster, 1659. WITH: An Interrogatory Relating More Particularly to the Husbandry and Natural History of Ireland. London: Richard Wodenothe, 1652. Five volumes bound as one. Octavo, period-style full paneled calf gilt, red morocco spine label, raised bands, marbled endpapers. $6500.First and early editions of five late 16th-mid 17th century tracts on animal husbandry, farming, and horse-riding, with woodcut illustrations and initials. One of EnglandÂ’s most prolific early writers on animal husbandry and sporting pastimes, and champion of “improved methods of horse-breeding and of horse-racing” (DNB), Gervase Markham tailored his works toward educating the landed classes in raising and caring for animals, as well as introducing them to the various “gentlemanly” pursuits and responsibilities. He is credited with importing the first Arabian horse into England. His English Husbandman contains “the knowledge of the true nature of every soil within this kingdom; how to plow itÂ… together with the art of planting, grafting and gardening after our latest and rarest fashion.” In Cheape and Good Husbandry, Markham discusses the breeding and raising of horse, cattle, sheep, pigs and other animals and discusses “the whole art of riding great-horses.” The Four Bookes of Husbandrie, by German Konrad Heresbach, here translated by poet Barnabe Googe, was later edited by Markham in 1614 (thus possibly explaining its presence in this collection, bound just after MarkhamÂ’s 1613 English Husbandman).Samuel Hartlib, author of The Compleat Husband and An Interrogatory—which is actually an appendix to the 1652 second edition of Samuel Hartlib His Legacie (“his best-known collection of tracts on agriculture” [DSB])—was one the 17th centuryÂ’s great polymaths and perhaps its most important scientific correspondent. In addition to encouraging many young scientists, he corresponded with many of the continental scientists of his day and served as an important “source of communication among scientists in the decades before the formation of scientific societies” (DSB). HartlibÂ’s Legacy with one signature (pages 9-16) bound in twice; text complete. Text in both black letter and roman type. It is notoriously difficult to establish edition for MarkhamÂ’s works, as he published prolifically but routinely republished works under slightly different names. He began publishing on horses and horsemanship as early as 1593; this is the first edition for English Hubandman and third edition for Cheape and Good Husbandry. Heresbach first published in English in 1577. The Compleat Husband-man is a first edition; the Interrogatory is an appendix to the second edition of Samuel Hartlib His Legacie. Wing 17355, 17336, 13198. STC H980, H990. Occasional early underlining and notations to text.Repair to title page of Cheape and Good Husbandry, occasional light foxing and very faint dampstaining. Beautifully bound.

Sorgum fructu rubro // Sorgo fructu albo

Eichstatt, 1613. Hand-coloured engraving. Basil Besler published "Hortus Eystettensis", the earliest large folio botanical, at Eichstatt near Nuremburg, in 1613. He worked on the drawings for the 374 copper engravings over a period of sixteen years using the plants in the garden of Bishop Johann Conrad von Gemmingen, his patron. Depicted in this florilegium were flowers, herbs, vegetables and newly discovered plants such as tobacco and peppers. Besler was, in modern terms, a botanist and horticulturalist, and he was familiar with real and alleged medicinal properties of various plants. Besler had the good fortune to live at a time when exotic plants were being shipped to Europe from all over the world. The garden that he organized and illustrated for his patron was both ornamental and experimental, and the large book he had engraved after his drawings was unique. The prints, made by a team of master engravers, are strong and exquisitely done.

[Hudson's and Linschoten's voyages to the North; Quiros's memorial concerning the discovery of Terra Australis incognita; Massa's description of Liberia].

Frankfurt: M. Becker, 1613. Folio, printed title within pictorial engraved border, divisional half-title preceding plates, and six engraved maps and views (three double-page); a fine copy in dark green crushed morocco by Sangorski & Sutcliffe. Frankfurt, Matthaus Becker, 1613. A rare and notably early printing of the famous Quiros memorial about the discovery of Terra Australis, the fifth part of the world. This is the first edition of the tenth part of De Bry's classic collection of "minor" or "petits" voyages - that is, voyages towards the East Indies and Asia, as opposed to the "major" voyages towards the Americas. The De Bry collection is essentially a history and anthology of the Dutch voyages to the East Indies and the Pacific by way of the Cape of Good Hope.Quiros, the last of the great Spanish discoverers, sailed on the Mendana expedition across the Pacific in 1595, and then commanded his own expedition of 1605-06 in search of the 'Terra Australis', actually discovering Tahiti and other Pacific Islands, and reaching the New Hebrides. His second-in-command, Luis Vaez de Torres, took one of the expedition's ships through the consequently named Torres Strait, and probably sighted Cape York. The remainder of Quiros's life was spent petitioning the King for an expedition with settlers to Terra Australis, without success; his secret 'Memorial' to the Spanish Court, which gradually became leaked through Europe in editions such as this, provoked the search for a southern continent that was not finished until Cook's expedition 150 years later. In the Memorial, Quiros compares Terra Australis favourably with America and Asia in regard to size, natural wealth and the possibilities for successful settlement; and though he had actually discovered the New Hebrides, Columbus thought that he had discovered Cathay, and the Quiros Memorial in its importance to Australia may be compared with the celebrated Columbus Letter in its various printings at the end of the fifteenth century in its importance to America. As Dalrymple later wrote, "the discovery of the Southern Continent, whenever and by whomsoever it may have been completely effected, is in justice due to his immortal name... "

Delle Navigationi et Viaggi raccolta da M. Gio. Battista Ramusio, in tre volume divisi.

Venice: Giunta, 1613-1583-1606. Three volumes, folio (305 x 205 mm), with 10 double-page or folded maps (seven woodcut, three engraved) and other woodcut maps, plans and illustrations in the text; eighteenth-century mottled calf, spines gilt, gilt edges. A complete set, from the library of the Bute family at Luton Hoo, of the greatest international collection of early travels (the three volumes respectively in sixth, third and third editions, representing the fullest possible text). Ramusio was assiduous in gathering and editing his narratives, some of them accounts published for the first time by him and not otherwise known, and some of which differed from previously printed versions. "In terms of wealth of material no previous compilation of travels could match Ramusio's achievement" (Lach, I p. 208).'The publication of Ramusio's raccolta may be said to open an era in the literary history of voyages and navigation. Instead of accounts carelessly copied and translated from previous collections, perpetuating errors and anachronisms, we find in this valuable work original narrations judiciously selected, carefully printed, and enriched with notices which betray the hand of a scholar of great critical acumen... ' (Harrisse, p. 457).Ramusio's Navigationi et viaggi was 'the first large published collection of historical documents other than collections of laws and decretals; the first large and planned collection of travel documents, and therefore the first approach to a documented history of travel and geography; and if not the first work, certainly the second (after the Novus orbis collection published at Basel in 1532) to imply the concept of a separate literary genre for which we have still no better name than travel narrative' (G. B. Parks, 'Ramusio's literary history', Studies in Philology, 52, 1955, p. 127).The first volume is 'devoted for the most part to Africa and southern Asia. Among its more important relations were included Leo's Africa; the accounts of Cadamosto, da Gama, Cabral, and Vespucci... ; Varthema's travels; Alvares's work on Abyssinia; the description of India and adjacent lands by Thomé Lopes, Duarte Barbosa, and Andrea Corsali; the journeys of Conti and Santo Stephano; and Pigafetta's journal of the Magellan voyage. The second volume... is concerned with Central Asia, Russia, and the Northern Seas. Included in it are the travels of Marco Polo (in a curious composite recension of various texts, resembling most closely the recently discovered codex in Toledo Cathedral); Hayton of Armenia; the Venetian missions to Persia; Paolo Giovo's book on the Turks; and... the journeys of Rubriquis and Odoric, Heberstein's travels in Russia, and the apocryphal voyages of the Zeni to Greenland. The third volume... is purely of American interest, including among its contents Peter Martyr's first three Decades; the entire 1535 edition of Oviedo y Valdes; Cortes's Second, Third and Fourth Letters; Cabeza de Vaca's relation of his wanderings; Coronado's journey; the voyages of Ulloa and Alarcon along the Pacific coast; Xeres's account of the conquest of Peru; Orellana's voyage down the Amazon; as well as the exploits of Verrazano and Jacques Cartier. Ramusio... was pre-eminent as an editor; he handled his material with great skill and produced a collection of unique value... ' (Penrose p. 306).In this set volume I is the sixth edition (1613), volumes II and III are third editions (1583 and 1606 respectively). Each volume went through several editions (volume I in 1550, 1554, 1563, 1588, 1606 and 1613; volume II in 1559, 1574, 1583 and 1606; and volume III in 1556, 1565 and 1606), but only once, in 1606, were all three volumes printed in the same year. It is usual, therefore, for sets to comprise mixed editions. New material was included in some editions; the text represented in the present set is the fullest possible, since volumes I and III are the final editions and nothing was added to the subsequent edition of volume II. A handsome set, this was once in the celebrated library of the earls and marquesses of Bute; the free-endpaper of volume 1 is marked 'Luton', i.e. Luton Hoo in Bedfordshire, the palatial house designed in 1767 for the third earl by Robert Adam. Provenance: Bute family library at Luton Hoo. Title-page of the first volume stained, occasional light soiling and the odd mark or spot elsewhere; heads and tails of spines and joints repaired.

Cyclamen serotinum folis hederaceis. Cyclamen vulgare Panis porcinus. Cyclaminus longius radiatus camerary..

Eichstatt. First published 1613. Ca. 165. Engraving, vintage handcoloring, plate mark measures 19 x 15 3/4 inches (48 x 40 cm) on sheet 22 1/2 x 17 3/4 inches. Dampstain to lower margin and left edge just entering the platemark at the lower left and right, tear across lower left corner now archivally repaired but with light discoloration visible from the old tape, text from verso visible. Color seepage onto verso. Thick felt-like paper. This is one of the stunning plates from Hortus Eystettensis, the first great florilegium "splendid in its array of large drawings, magnificent as a record of the plants in a German garden at the beginning of the seventeenth century" (Hunt). The work commemorates the celebrated gardens of its patron, Johann Konrad von Gemmingen, Prince Bishop of Eichstatt. "The book is horticultural rather than botanical, and is the earliest pictorial record of flowers in a single garden. It is divided into Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter sections and is concerned almost entirely with ornamental plants, including florists' flowers and double forms of flowers best left single ... With the outbreak of the Thirty Years War six years after the Bishop's death, the garden deteriorated, and by 1633 the celebrated collection of plants had reverted to a vegetable plot." (Coats). "The plates depict over 1000 flowers representing 667 species, many of them exotics appearing for the first time. The original drawings ... took sixteen years to complete; ten artists and engravers were involved, the most important being Wolfgang Kilian of Augsburg. The author, Basilius Besler (1561-1629), was a Nuremberg apothecary and botanist. The work was completed in Autumn 1613 and three hundred copies were issued. The copper plates survived until 1817, when they were melted down by the Royal Mint in Munich." (de Belder catalogue #23). The work was reprinted in 1640 and 1713. It is not known what edition this plate is from; the handcolor is later, but not recent. This plate (from the selection of autumnal plants) depicts an ivy-leaved cyclamen and two European cyclamens, all from the Primulaceae family.
