Le pantheon Huguenot decouvert et ruiné contre l'aucteur de l'Idolatrie pap EDITION ORIGINALE

A Lyon: chez Pierre Rigaud., 1610. Fine. chez Pierre Rigaud., A Lyon 1610, in 8 (11,5x17cm), (24) 399pp. (1bc) (27) (1bc)., relié. - First Edition. Rare. The work will then be translated into Latin in 1613 as a frontispiece depicting the Pantheon of Hadrian broken and various characters. Dedicated to Henri IV. Parchment full contemporary. Smooth spine with respect to the red pen. A piece of parchment missing on the back (1,5x2,5cm) and the lower flat (3x1cm). Laces still present, but short. First cover page detached. From p. 222, a gallery to 1cm in height in the middle of the text, this gallery two holes become larger or smaller, then evolving to a greater extent on the index (3cm). Back linking books of the book, which takes less lacks some seams. A part of the reading of a Protestant book, Idolatry papistical (even wrote him in response to a first book Richeome, Huguenot Idolatry) Jesuit Louis Richeome shows that the Protestant heresy is not only idolatrous and iconoclastic, but also worshiping the moon and Venus, the Devil and other pagan deities, such as Saturn. Richeome was very popular in his time as a polemicist and writer, was nicknamed the French Cicero, he never ceased to defend the Jesuits against attacks from all sides, and lay siege to Henry IV and to place themselves under his protection in all his books. It is now considered one of the forerunners of devout humanism, played by François de Sales. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. Contact us for any information! - [FRENCH VERSION FOLLOWS] Edition originale. Rare.

The Province of Ulster described with inset of "Enis Kelling Fort on Lough Farne", title cartouche and Scale cartouche showing "The Scale of Irish Miles"

London: Sudbury & Humble. Excellent condition of this early, uncoloured Speed map of Ulster. Two tiny holes in outer margins only.. London, Sudbury & Humble, 1610 [c.1627]. Original engraving. The engraving (the plate) itself 51.2 cm wide x 38.3 cm wide. Mounted: ca 71 cm wide x 57 cm high. Excellent condition of this early, uncoloured Speed map of Ulster. Two tiny holes in outer margins only. John Speed (1552 ?- 28 July 1629) was an English cartographer and historian. He is known as England's most famous Stuart period mapmaker. Speed was born at Farndon, Cheshire, and went into his father's tailoring business. While working in London, his knowledge of history led him into learned circles and he came to the attention of Sir Fulke Greville, who subsequently made him an allowance to enable him to devote his whole attention to research. As a reward for his earlier efforts, Queen Elizabeth granted Speed the use of a room in the Custom House. His atlas The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine was published in 1610/11, and contained the first set of individual county maps of England and Wales besides maps of Ireland [five in all] and a general map of Scotland. Most, but not all, of the county maps have town plans on them; those showing a Scale of Passes being the places he had mapped himself. In 1627, two years before his death, Speed published Prospect of the Most Famous Parts of the World which was the first world atlas produced by an Englishman. There is a fascinating text describing the areas shown on the back of the maps in English, although a rare edition of 1616 of the British maps has a Latin text - this is believed to have been produced for the Continental market. Much of the engraving was done in Amsterdam at the workshop of Jodocus Hondius. His maps of English counties are often found framed in homes throughout the United Kingdom. He is buried with his wife in St Giles-without-Cripplegate church, Fore Street within the Barbican Estate in the City of London. A memorial to John Speed was also erected behind the altar of the church. According to the church's website, "[His was] one of the few memorials [in the church] that survived the bombing" of London during The Blitz of 1940?-1941 ... The website also notes that "[t]he cast for the niche in which the bust is placed was provided by the Merchant Taylors' Company, of which John Speed was a member." His memorial brass has ended up on display in the Burrell Collection near Glasgow. It was with the encouragement of William Camden that Speed began his Historie of Great Britaine, which was published in 1611.[7] Although he probably had access to historical sources that are now lost to us (he certainly used the work of Saxton and Norden), his work as a historian is considered mediocre and secondary in importance to his map-making, of which his most important contribution is probably his town plans, many of which provide the first visual record of the British towns they depict. In 1627 George Humble published the Prospect of the Most Famous Parts of the World, printed by John Dawson. This is the world map from this atlas with John Speed's name in the title, but not attributed to Speed's authorship. In 1611, he also published The genealogies recorded in the Sacred Scriptures according to euery family and tribe with the line of Our Sauior Jesus Christ obserued from Adam to the Blessed Virgin Mary, a biblical genealogy, reprinted several times during the 17th century.         Engraved Portrait of most powerful Muslim leader of fifteenth century, 'Magnus Tamerlanes'

Francois Langlois, il Ciartres,. 1610 - 1647.. Very good overall. An engraved portrait of the fifteenth century conqueror Timur (Turkic word for "Iron"). Timur (1336 - 1405), known as "Timur the lame" or Tamerlane, was a conqueror whose successful military campaigns across Eurasia made him the most powerful leader of the Muslim world, second only to Alexander in terms of conquests. From Samarkand, his capital, his conquests included Iraq, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Mesopotamia, Georgia, India, Syria, and Turkey. His territory stretched from the Mediterranean to Mongolia, from India to Russia. He was on his way to conquer Ming China in 1404, when he died during a brutally cold winter. The portrait depicts Timur with a long mustache, bust length, turned to the right, wearing a hat of fur and cloth decorated with a feather and a brooch with pendant pearls. He wears a cloak fastened on his left shoulder with a brooch shaped like a flower. His facial expression is intense, a mix of concern and determination. The portrait was engraved after one by Claude Vignon (1593 - 1670), a French painter noted for his distinctive style and unusually expressive portraits. Engraved by Jerome David, after Claude Vignon, plate 9 from a series of 36. 'C. V. inventor', top left and with publication line: 'F. L. D. Ciartres excud. Cum Privilegio' at top right, and the title centered over the portrait, "Magnus Tamerlanes". Watermarked laid paper. 7 1/2 x 9", trimmed close.

Contemporary full vellum, fore-edges turned-in, 4 raised bands, ms. spine title; binding square and tight, LACKS front free end-paper. Very Good. Isaac Casaubon edited for the first time this series of 17 short essays on linguistic and historical subjects (including Aeschylus, Euripides, and Caesar), as well as Scaliger's poems and letters; most in Latin except the last three works in French. Joseph Scaliger was a philologist, who learned Latin from his father, but also studied Greek, Hebrew, and Arabic at the University of Paris. For thirty years Scaliger was the companion of Louis de Chasteigner, lord of La Roche-Posay with whom he visited Italy, England and Scotland, finally settling at the University of Leiden in 1593. Isaac Casaubon first exchanged letters with Scaliger in 1594, and although they never met, their correspondence reveals a growing admiration and friendship between the two. Both men had the reputation as being the most learned man of their age; Casaubon was spending the last year of a decade-long sojourn in Paris when this volume was published. First edition.

First edition of this important work on perspective and painting. "The draughtsman and engraver Grégoire Huret (1610-70) - an academician who was also close to the king - took over Bosse's lectures at the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture. In 1670, Huret published <i>Optique de portraiture et peinture</i> (<i>Optics of portraying and painting</i>) in which he expressed great concern about the state of the art, particularly criticising Bosse's book from 1665 [<i>On the practices of geometrical planes and perspectives</i>] and previous publications... Huret claimed that his book should be seen as a contribution to the education of the young, especially to teaching them useful rules for drawing perspective... Huret was well read and discussed books on other subjects than perspective. Naturally enough these included general works on painting, but also Desargues's and Pascal's works on projective geometry... Among the more productive passages in Huret's book one can find a presentation of the construction and use of an angle scale. He also dealt with a point most authors avoided, namely the use of scaled lengths in perspective constructions. In this connection he presented the technique for applying a reduced distance in a distance point construction - without reducing the actual distance - that 'sGravesande applied later ... Huret may have been searching for a closer link between perspective and projective geometry. It also seems he had some doubts concerning perspective that were similar to those expressed by Leonardo da Vinci" (Andersen, <i>The Geometry of an Art: the History of the Mathematical Theory of Perspective from Alberti to Monge</i>, 2007, pp. 465-66).<br/><br/> "In portraying the bodies of man and animals Huret grants the liberty to the painter to draw them without any perspectival distortion on the picture plane, just as the eyes see them in life. This is a plea for a flexible response to natural vision and Judgement by eye ... Not surprisingly he criticized Cousin, Barbaro, Marolois and Desargues for taking mathematical perspective beyond its visual limits" (Martin Kemp, <i>The Science of Art</i>, Yale University Press 1990, S. 125)<br/><br/> Macclesfield Sale lot 1079; Arnoud de Vitry Sale lot 459 & 460..         Antiquae urbis splendor

1610. LAURO, Giacomo. Antiquae urbis splendor. [3] ff. text and 41 full-page engraved plates. Rome: [NP], 1610. BOUND WITH: _________. Antiquitatum urbis liber secundus. 44 full-page engraved plates. Rome: [NP], 1613. BOUND WITH: _________. Antiquae urbis splendoris co[m]plementu[m]. [3] ff. text and 50 full-page engraved plates. Rome: [NP], 1615. Together in one volume. Oblong 4to., 222 x 280 mm, bound in English black morocco ca. 1700, each board double-ruled in gilt surrounding a gilt frame of a floral roll with fleurons at corners, spine gilt with raised bands, title in second compartment of six each decorated with fleurons, gilt turn-ins and all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. |~||~||~||~| One of three copies and the only copy in the U.S. with the date 1610 on the title-page, according to OCLC. The title-page to the first volume is usually dated 1612, suggesting ours is a much earlier state. A justly famous pictorial record of ancient monuments in Rome, these plates give the fullest account of Roman antiquities known in the seventeenth century, with depictions of temples, amphitheatres, columns, arches, palaces, monuments, and gardens. There are triumphal processions, costumes, military formations, a map of the Roman Empire, and much more. The plates have an amateur aspect that is intriguing (imperfect perspective, simple shadowing), considering the excellent quality of the overall production. Here we have 135 plates and [6] ff. letterpress, all plates with blank versos. In addition to images of antiquities, these include: in the first volume, a dedication to the King of Poland, Sigismund III, and a portrait of him dated 1609, and a map of ancient Rome; in the second volume, a dedication to the Duke of Savoy, Charles Emmanuel I, and a portrait of him dated 1613; and in the third volume, a dedication to the Duke of Parma, Ranuccio Farnese I, a map of the Roman Empire, and a depiction of a fireworks display. Every copy we find of this set differs in plate and page count, most with fewer illustrations and some or no text. Ours has more plates than called for by Fowler, who counts 125 including titles and dedications, and no text; and the Berlin Katalog copy, with 118 plates and seven leaves of text. The letterpress text seems to be taken from Lauro's Roma vetus, et nova... (Rome: Giacomo Mascardi, 1614), including the privilege of Clement VIII and Lauro's note to the reader, in Latin on the recto and Italian on the verso. A fourth part, not here, was issued in 1628 with about 40 more plates. Binding extremities lightly rubbed. Front pastedown with evidence of removed bookplate. Overall a fresh copy in an elegant English binding. Berlin Katalog 1858. Millard, Italian 54 (second edition, third issue). Fowler 169. Brunet III, 881. Cicognara 3761.         Opuscula Varia Antehac Non Edita. Omnium Catalogum post Praefationem Lector inueniet

Paris:: Hieronymum Drovart,, 1610. First Edition. Very Good. FIRST EDITION of this collection of posthumous works of Joseph Justus Scaliger, edited by Isaac Casaubon (1559-1614). 4to. 9 1/4 x 7 inches. a4 e4 i4, o2, A-Z4 Aa-Zz4 Aaa-Zzz4 Aaaa-Cccc4, Dddd2. [xxviii], 582 (i. e.: 572), 8 pp. Pages run from 544, 555, 456, 557-572, skipping 10 pages out of sequence. Printer's device on title page, 2 numismatic wood engravings, 1 table, 1 engraved emblem, text in Latin with examples in Greek, Hebrew, and Arabic, index; occasional spotting that burns through the pages, affecting the text on a few pages. Contemporary limp vellum, manuscript spine title. 18th or 19th-century printed and manuscript library bookplate, later monogram book label. 17th-century inscriptions, including ex dono inscription of George Keith, in title page. Early repair to front free endpapers, title leaf, and first leaf of text, with some resulting glue stains, occasional minor worming. After the first few leaves, contents clean. Overall very good. "Miracles of the Dead" is one of the four works by German lawyer Heinrich Kornmann (ca. 1580-1620) published between 1610 and 1614 on magic and marvels. "Magical bits from the Miracles of the Dead are that the owl is a fatal omen and the peacock a presage of disease, that suffumigation with the tooth of a dead man expels witchcraft and impotency, that the herb betony protects cemeteries, and that if a mother kisses her dead child, the other children will soon die too. Astrology enters. . . in the question why thousands of persons with different horoscopes die on the same day in the same battle, and divination in the question what dreams about the dead signifiy, the discussion of presages of death, and the prophecies of those about to die. The problem is. . . argued whether the witch of Endor really resuscitated Samuel. Joan of Arc's heart was unburned at the stake. Cases are listed of the teeth of corpses growing and a dead woman impregnated. a corpse is heavier than the living body because it is without the levitation of the vital spirits and heat. The size and weight of resurrected bodies is discussed, how men who have been eaten and the cannibals who ate them can both be resurrected in the body, whether abortions will rise again, and whether monsters will be resurrected. The corpse bleeding before the murderer is treated, and if inextinguishable and ever-burning sepulchral lamps are not, they are about the only thing connected with funerals and burials which is omitted" (Thorndike VII, pp. 278-80).         Heilige Familie mit der Heiligen Elisabeth und Johannes als Kind.

      - Radierung, nach G.A. Sirani (1610-1670), auf Bütten. 26,7:21,7 cm. Mit minimalem Rändchen um die Umfassungslinie. Literatur: Bartsch 8; Nagler 8, mit dem Namen des G.A. Sirani. Katalog: Das verborgene Museum I.         Of the cities of God

London: George Eld, 1610 Woodcut device on title. Contemporary calf rebacked with original backstrip laid down, both covers stamped with central gilt decoration; first two leaves repaired on edges, minor browning to fore-edges, otherwise a very nice copy with the ownership signature on title of Dan Baker dated 1822 as well as inscription that the book was ?"purchased from Dan Baker by J.M. Moore?" dated 1824. First edition in English, translated by John Healey from the Latin version edited by Juan Luis Vives (1492-1540), the famed Spanish scholar who was encouraged by his friend Erasmus to work on Augustine?'s (354-430) great treatise. Vives?'s De causis has been compared to Bacon?'s Organon. Healey (d. ca. 1609) was unable to correct the printing of his translation before his death as the dedication to the Earl of Pembroke by Thomas Thorpe (printer of Shakespeare?'s Sonnets) implies. Thus Healey?'s translation remained the sole English version until Dr. Dods?'s translation of 1871, and is one of the most enduring examples of Elizabethan prose. De civitate Dei influenced world history from the middle ages to the end of the eighteenth century, and its power is still present, for example, in international law. It was described by Voltaire as the first contribution to a philosophy of history. The first edition (in Latin) was printed by Sweynheym and Pannartz at Subiaco in 1467. Printing & the Mind of Man, 3.
