Opuscula Varia Antehac Non Edita. Omnium Catalogum post Praefationem Lector inueniet

Paris:: Hieronymum Drovart,, 1610. First Edition. Very Good. FIRST EDITION of this collection of posthumous works of Joseph Justus Scaliger, edited by Isaac Casaubon (1559-1614). 4to. 9 1/4 x 7 inches. a4 e4 i4, o2, A-Z4 Aa-Zz4 Aaa-Zzz4 Aaaa-Cccc4, Dddd2. [xxviii], 582 (i. e.: 572), 8 pp. Pages run from 544, 555, 456, 557-572, skipping 10 pages out of sequence. Printer's device on title page, 2 numismatic wood engravings, 1 table, 1 engraved emblem, text in Latin with examples in Greek, Hebrew, and Arabic, index; occasional spotting that burns through the pages, affecting the text on a few pages. Contemporary full vellum, fore-edges turned-in, 4 raised bands, ms. spine title; binding square and tight, LACKS front free end-paper. Very Good. Isaac Casaubon edited for the first time this series of 17 short essays on linguistic and historical subjects (including Aeschylus, Euripides, and Caesar), as well as Scaliger's poems and letters; most in Latin except the last three works in French. Joseph Scaliger was a philologist, who learned Latin from his father, but also studied Greek, Hebrew, and Arabic at the University of Paris. For thirty years Scaliger was the companion of Louis de Chasteigner, lord of La Roche-Posay with whom he visited Italy, England and Scotland, finally settling at the University of Leiden in 1593. Isaac Casaubon first exchanged letters with Scaliger in 1594, and although they never met, their correspondence reveals a growing admiration and friendship between the two. Both men had the reputation as being the most learned man of their age; Casaubon was spending the last year of a decade-long sojourn in Paris when this volume was published.

[Frankfurt]: Printed by Johann Wolf for Johann Jacob Porsius, 1610. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Small octavo. A-Y8 (Y8 blank); 176 leaves. Contemporary limp vellum, manuscript spine title. 18th or 19th-century printed and manuscript library bookplate, later monogram book label. 17th-century inscriptions, including ex dono inscription of George Keith, in title page. Modern bibliographical inscriptions in front free endpaper. Vellum worn and moderately soiled but sound. Early repair to front free endpapers, title leaf, and first leaf of text, with some resulting glue stains, occasional minor worming. After the first few leaves, contents clean. Overall very good. "Miracles of the Dead" is one of the four works by German lawyer Heinrich Kornmann (ca. 1580-1620) published between 1610 and 1614 on magic and marvels. "Magical bits from the Miracles of the Dead are that the owl is a fatal omen and the peacock a presage of disease, that suffumigation with the tooth of a dead man expels witchcraft and impotency, that the herb betony protects cemeteries, and that if a mother kisses her dead child, the other children will soon die too. Astrology enters. . . in the question why thousands of persons with different horoscopes die on the same day in the same battle, and divination in the question what dreams about the dead signifiy, the discussion of presages of death, and the prophecies of those about to die. The problem is. . . argued whether the witch of Endor really resuscitated Samuel. Joan of Arc's heart was unburned at the stake. Cases are listed of the teeth of corpses growing and a dead woman impregnated. a corpse is heavier than the living body because it is without the levitation of the vital spirits and heat. The size and weight of resurrected bodies is discussed, how men who have been eaten and the cannibals who ate them can both be resurrected in the body, whether abortions will rise again, and whether monsters will be resurrected. The corpse bleeding before the murderer is treated, and if inextinguishable and ever-burning sepulchral lamps are not, they are about the only thing connected with funerals and burials which is omitted" (Thorndike VII, pp. 278-80). Caillet 5827 ("Curieux et recherché").

Heilige Familie mit der Heiligen Elisabeth und Johannes als Kind.

      - Radierung, nach G.A. Sirani (1610-1670), auf Bütten. 26,7:21,7 cm. Mit minimalem Rändchen um die Umfassungslinie. Literatur: Bartsch 8; Nagler 8, mit dem Namen des G.A. Sirani.

        Of the cities of God

London: George Eld, 1610 Woodcut device on title. Contemporary calf rebacked with original backstrip laid down, both covers stamped with central gilt decoration; first two leaves repaired on edges, minor browning to fore-edges, otherwise a very nice copy with the ownership signature on title of Dan Baker dated 1822 as well as inscription that the book was ?"purchased from Dan Baker by J.M. Moore?" dated 1824. First edition in English, translated by John Healey from the Latin version edited by Juan Luis Vives (1492-1540), the famed Spanish scholar who was encouraged by his friend Erasmus to work on Augustine?'s (354-430) great treatise. Vives?'s De causis has been compared to Bacon?'s Organon. Healey (d. ca. 1609) was unable to correct the printing of his translation before his death as the dedication to the Earl of Pembroke by Thomas Thorpe (printer of Shakespeare?'s Sonnets) implies. Thus Healey?'s translation remained the sole English version until Dr. Dods?'s translation of 1871, and is one of the most enduring examples of Elizabethan prose. De civitate Dei influenced world history from the middle ages to the end of the eighteenth century, and its power is still present, for example, in international law. It was described by Voltaire as the first contribution to a philosophy of history. The first edition (in Latin) was printed by Sweynheym and Pannartz at Subiaco in 1467. Printing & the Mind of Man, 3.

Li quatro ordeni delle Terre di Germania". Manuscript by an unknown hand.

      N. p. o. d., [Italy, c. 1570-1610]. - ½ folio leaf (divided vertically), written on one side. Elegantly disposed manuscript list of a series of princes and places in the Holy Roman Empire, written in a fine late 16th-century italic hand, supplemented by a contemporary hand. - Curious listing of names of places and potentates in 'Germany' (actually, within the Holy Roman Empire, since the Duke of Lorraine and the Count of Savoy are included), enumerating every class by fours - e. g. four dukes, four landgraves, four cities, four vicars etc. Evidently either a jeu d'esprit or perhaps for a literary purpose, the piece is without any identification. Including the additions in another hand, there are 12 groups of four in all (a total of 48), enough for a deck of playing cards. In addition, the second hand has inserted digits from 1 to 12 randomly beside each group. Could this be the plan for a proposed pictorial set of cards? - Slightly browned and with small damages to edges.

        Cestriae

London: , 1610. [Cheshire] Size: 290 × 340 mm. Copperplate engraving with hand colour. Map has been cleaned, and partially re-margined, but generally in good condition. A wonderful county map of Cheshire from William Camden's historic and important atlas 'Britannia'; first published in 1607. Originally, in 1586, Camden's work was a detailed historical and topographical description of Britain. Hole & Kip added their maps to this work in 1607. The maps are heavily based on the earlier work by the Elizabethan cartographer Christopher Saxton. This map comes from the second edition, printed only 3 years later. Interesting embellishments add and complement this very early county map.

Libri, da Guglielmo Arcivescovo di Tiro & Gran Cancelieri del Regno di Gierusalemme la Qual Continua Ottanta Quattro anni per ordine, fin'al Regno di Baldoino IIII. Tradotta in Lingua Italiana da M. Gioseppe Horologgi

Antonio Pinelli, Venetia 1610 - 8, [8], 615 pp. 8vo, 8.25 by 6.25 inches, 21 by 16 cm. Considered one of the most significant pieces of literature from the Middle Ages and a seminal work of literature written in the French language. Also a milestone in historiography as the most important account of the first and second crusades and especially the latter, for which William of Tyre was a contemporary witness. The author produced this work at the request of Almaric I in about 1170 and he continued to work on it until 1183. The work was indeed accepted as unquestioned fact for many centuries and only recently have biases been discerned owing from William's entanglement in the political disputes of the day.

1610 - - chez Pierre Rigaud., A Lyon 1610, in 8 (11,5x17cm), (24) 399pp. (1bc) (27) (1bc)., relié. - Edition originale. Rare. (24) 399pp. (1bc) (27) (1bc). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

DESCRIPTION DV PENIBLE VOYAGE FAIT ENTOVR DE L'VNIVERS OV GLOBE TERRESTRE. PAR SR. OLIVIER DV NORT D'VTRECHT, GENERAL DE QVATRE NAVIRES, ASSAVOIR: DE CELLE DITE MAURITIUS

Amsterdam: La vefue de Cornille Nicolas, 1610.. [2],61,[1]pp., including twenty-five in-text engravings and two full-page maps. Folio. Full antique calf, spine ornately gilt, leather label. Contemporary inscription on titlepage. Very minor toning and soiling. A few leaves trimmed a bit close. Very good. Second French edition, following the first French printing of 1602. Van Noort, a former innkeeper in Rotterdam sponsored by a group of Dutch merchants, accomplished the fourth circumnavigation of the globe after Magellan, Drake, and Cavendish. He was the first Dutch explorer to do so, making the trip from 1598 to 1601. The voyage was particularly arduous. Half the crew mutinied, his ships were constantly harassed, and most of those that didn't mutiny perished from disease. He returned to Holland "with only one battered ship and eight crew left (although some accounts suggest that forty-five crew survived). His voyage contributed little to the geographical knowledge of the time but had some effect in opening the way to the establishment of the Dutch in the East Indies...Van Noort's achievement, however, captured the imagination of his countrymen, and the published accounts sold well, the first appearing only eighteen days after his return. A more complete edition appeared later that year, followed by two amended editions in 1602" (Howgego). HOWGEGO N37. EUROPEAN AMERICANA 610/79. SABIN 55438. BORBA DE MORAES II:103. TIELE 806.

Britain, or A chorographicall description of the most flourishing kingdomes, England, Scotland, and Ireland, and the Ilands adioyning, out of the depth of Antiquitie: beautified with mappes of the severall shires of England: vvritten first in Latine by William Camden Clarenceux K. of A. Translated newly into English by Philémon Holland Doctour in Physick: finally, revised, amended, and enlarged with sundry additions by the said author

London: George Bishop & John Norton, 1610 - First edition in English of one of the great achievements of English scholarship, the first comprehensive topographical survey of Great Britian, and a book of the greatest importance to the develpment of the nation's self image. Camden's work first appeared in Latin in 1586 in a thick octavo volume dedicated to Lord Burghley: "It received immediate recognition - and its successive, enlarged editions of 1587, 1590, 1594, 1600 (dedicated to Queen Elizabeth) and 1607 (dedicated to King James) and its English translation of 1610 by Philemon Holland attest to its popularity - Throughout the decades after its first appearance Camden continued to revise the text and experiment with the work's format and apparatus, and he worked closely with Holland on the 1610 translation. In spite of the author's collaboration, however, the translation is often inaccurate and takes liberties with the material, and for this reason is regarded as inferior to Edmund Gibson's translation of 1695. By 1607, the year of its last Latin edition in Camden's lifetime, published in folio and containing an index, maps by Saxton and Norden, and engravings of coins, monuments, and topographical sites, it had evolved into an impressive and editorially sophisticated work of scholarship" (Oxford DNB) First edition in English. Folio. Additional engraved title-page ("BRITANNIA -"), letterpress title-page with woodcut device and ornament, 8 full-page engravings of coins in the text, numerous text illustrations, and 55 (of 57) engraved maps (all but 2 double-page), engraved by Willem Kip and William Hole after Christopher Saxton and John Norden. Lacking maps of Somersetshire and Durham. [16], 208, 207-287 [i.e. 299], 302-822, [2], 233, [55] pp. 19th-century half morocco and marbed boards and endpapers, minor dampstaining to first few leaves at outer margins, two maps backed, a few ragged along edges, and a few shaved into the plate, with slight loss, a few corners restored, barely affecting images, overall, both text and maps quite clean, and a good, sturdy copy.

[xvii]+548+[16] pages. Quarto (11 1/4" x 8 1/4") bound in old velum with original string ties still in place. From the library of George M Foster. 1st edition.Antonio de Solís y Ribadeneyra (1610 - April 19, 1686), Spanish dramatist and historian, was born at Alcalá de Henares (less probably, Plasencia). He studied law at Salamanca, where he produced a comedy entitled Amor y obligación, which was acted in 1627. He became secretary to the count of Oropesa, and in 1654 he was appointed secretary of state as well as private secretary to Philip IV. Later he obtained the lucrative post of chronicler of the Indies, and, on taking orders in 1671 severed his connexion with the stage. He died at Madrid on the 19th of April 1686. Of his ten extant plays, two have some place in the history of the drama. El Antor al use was adapted by Scarron and again by Thomas Corneille as L'Amour de la mode, while La Gitanilla de Madrid, itself founded on the novela of Cervantes, has been utilized directly or indirectly by PA Wolff, Victor Hugo and Longfellow. The titles of the remaining seven are Triunfos de amor y fortuna, Eurídice y Orfeo, El Alcetzar del secrete, Las Amazonas, El doctor Carlino, Un bobo hace ciento, and Amparar el enemigo. Amor y obligación survives in a manuscript at the Biblioteca Nacional. The Historia de la conquista de México, población y progresos de la América septentrional, conocida por el nombre de Nueva España, covering the three years between the appointment of Cortés to command the invading force and the fall of the city, deservedly ranks as a Spanish prose classic. It was published in 1684; an English translation by Townshend appeared in 1724.George McClelland Foster, Jr born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, on October 9, 1913, died on May 18, 2006, at his home in the hills above the campus of the University of California, Berkeley, where he served as a professor from 1953 to his retirement in 1979, when he became professor emeritus. His contributions to anthropological theory and practice still challenge us; in more than 300 publications, his writings encompass a wide diversity of topics, including acculturation, long-term fieldwork, peasant economies, pottery making, public health, social structure, symbolic systems, technological change, theories of illness and wellness, humoral medicine in Latin America, and worldview. The quantity, quality, and long-term value of his scholarly work led to his election to the National Academy of Sciences in 1976. Virtually all of his major publications have been reprinted and/or translated. Provenance from the executor of Foster's library laid in.Condition:Lacks Foster stamp and acquiry date, soiled, extremity wear, repair to title verso, page 77 with marginal tear else a very good.

Cockle, 609. Brunet, I,1201. Graesse, I, 519. Manzi, 106. D'Ayala, I, p. 10. Vinciana, 1418. Olschki, Choix, 10032. In 1610 Schedel produced Calendarium, a manuscript containing 289 folios of colored drawings of flowers, arranged according to months of flowering. This format closely resembles that of Basil Besler’s famous Hortus Eystettensis (1613), which was painted and engraved by a skilled team of Germans including Sebastian Schedel himself.
