It provides a relatively-detailed of Spanish colonization attempts into the second half of the 16th century and a vibrant picture of continued Spanish expansion in this part of the New World. . .The sources for this map clearly are the accounts from sundry Spanish overland and coasting expeditions, dating back to the time of Cortes." Costa is not to be confused with the French jurist Jean Lacoste (de la Coste) [1560-1637]. Costa's treatise went thought two later editions in 1629 and 1630. All three are rare.         Apollonius Batavus, seu, exsuscitata Apollonii Pergaei ... geometria.Leiden, Jan Claesz. van Dorp, sold by Joannes Maire, 1608. 4to. With Maire's publisher's device on title-page, numerous woodcut diagrams in text, 1 woodcut decorated initial. Modern red half morocco.

Bierens de Haan 4388; Breugelmans, Maire 1608:3; DSB XII, pp. 499-502; STCN (6 copies). First edition of Snellius's attempt to reconstruct one of Apollonius of Perga's lost works on plane loci, an ancestor of analytical geometry. Though Apollonius made major contributions to mathematics, his works survive only in the form of abstracts in the mathematical collections compiled by Pappus under the title Synagoge, preserved in a 12th-century manuscript, and in occasional citations in other works. Other notable attempts to reconstruct his works were made by Pierre de Fermat, Frans van Schooten and finally Robert Simson.Willibrord Snellius or Snel van Royen (1580-1626) was a distinguished Dutch mathematician and astronomer, who made observations under Tycho and translated Stevin's Wisconstighe ghedachtenissen into Latin. He is best remembered for his discovery of the law of refraction of light rays, formulated around 1621 and now known as Snel's law.Browned throughout, especially the title-page, where several small holes or weak spots have been unobtrusively restored without affecting the text, otherwise in good condition.

Louvain: In officina typographica Gerardi Rivii, 1608. <p>Fienus, Thomas (1567-1631). De viribus imaginationis tractatus. 8vo. [16], 200pp. Louvain: In officina typographica Gerardi Rivii, 1608. 167 x 104 mm. Old vellum, rebacked preserving portion of spine, endpapers renewed. Worming in lower margin of first four leaves, not affecting text, but very good otherwise. </p><p>First Edition. Fienus&#146;s treatise deals with the physiological or psychosomatic effects of the imagination on the body. Working within the psychological framework established by Thomas Aquinas, who identified imagination as one of the four apprehensive powers of the sensory soul, Fienus posited that the imagination exerted its influence indirectly on the body via the emotions: </p><p>"The imagination is fitted by nature to move the appetite and excite the emotions, as is obvious, since by thinking happy things we rejoice, by thinking of sad things we fear and are sad, and all emotions follow previous thought. But the emotions are greatly alterative with respect to the body. . . . Since the imagination produces change by means of the emotions and the emotions produce change by means of the natural movement of the heart and by means of the movement of the humors and the spirits, the imagination does also" (quoted in Brown, p. 42). </p><p>Fienus believed that maternal imagination influenced the developing fetus, an argument he illustrated with 32 case histories, but denied that there was any relation between the human soul and the stars. </p><p>A native of Antwerp, Fienus received his medical training in Louvain and in Italy, where he studied under Girolamo Mercuriale, Ulisse Aldrovande and other prominent Italian physicians. He was appointed professor of medicine at Louvain in 1593, remaining there until his death nearly 40 years later. He was the author of several medical treatises, including three works on embryology and one on cautery; he also wrote a book on the comet of 1618.         Martini Del-Rio . Pharus Sacrae Sapientiae .,

Sumptibus Horatij Cardon, Lugduni (Lyon) 1608 - 4to. (8),583, (20)pp. Full vellum with spine lettered in manuscript. Title page in black and red with the printer's device prominently displayed. Also a contemporary ownership signature on the title page. Occasional light staining and soil else a very good copy. This is a branded book (i.e a book bearing a marca de fuego) from the Convento de la Purísima Concepción de Celaya. The practice of branding the fore edges of books was located primarily in Colonial Mexico as a way to identify the monastic library to which the book belonged. The book was branded in the same way that one brands a cow: with a hot iron. Many of the brands have now been identified by scholars. The brand on this book occurs on all three edges of the text block. It consists of three initial "c"'s in whose interior are the initials "o", "n", "ha" (the last is fused to the "c" to give "cha"). Giving us 'Concha". The final symbol is a circle with five points denoting this as a Franciscan binding: the five points refer to the five wounds of Francis' stigmata. In 1994 Daid Saavedra attributed this mark to the Convento Grande de San Francisco de Querétaro, but subsequent study has shifted the attribution to the Franciscan convent of La Purísima in Celaya.

(43) [Attributes: Hard Cover]
