        Maniement d'Armes

1608. DE GHEYN II, Jacob. Maniement d'Armes. Three parts in one volume. Engraved title-page, 3 ff., 42 plates; 2 ff., 43 plates; 3 ff., 32 plates. Altogether 118 plates engraved by Jacob de Gheyn II. Small folio, 343 x 256 mm, bound in early nineteenth-century English polished beige calf, gilt; rebacked in the style of the period. Amsterdam: Henry Laurens, 1607 (changed in MS to "1608" as commonly). First Edition in French, printed in the same year as the first Dutch edition. Jacob de Gheyn II (1565-1629), Dutch painter and graphic designer, who is known to have influenced Rembrandt, used images in the present volume for his 1642 painting of "The Company of Frans Banning Cock Preparing to March Out" (a.k.a. The Nightwatch). De Gheyn, through his scores of prints and drawings, is credited with leading Dutch art from its decorative Mannerist style toward naturalism. At the close of the sixteenth century and the beginning of the seventeenth, a growing interest developed in military tactics and ways of using different types of weapons. This superbly illustrated manual for the exercise of military arms, dedicated to Prince Maurice of Nassau, specifically demonstrates the musket and pike drill. The original drawings were commissioned about ten years earlier by Jan van Nassau-Siegen. The manual was intended as a training guide to instruct officers on how to handle arms effectively and correctly. It showed each position for the deployment of a variety of weapons. De Gheyn's work offers a unique glimpse into warfare as waged in the Thirty Years War and even the English Civil War. The engravings are full of life and movement and include fine costume detail. The work is divided into three parts: the first set (42 plates) concerns Firelocks; the second set (43 plates) is of Muskets; and the third (32 plates) Pikemen. De Gheyn demonstrates how to load and fire, or merely carry, a matchlock piece. In addition, there are numerous detailed illustrations that show the various movements and postures to be adopted during use of the pike. Volume rebacked in the style of the period. PROVENANCE: Seventeenth-century ownership inscription on title-page "Adries Boccaert" (no doubt a member of the noble Flemish Boccaert family); Boies Penrose, with his ex-libris. Lipperheide 2058 (lacking plates 14-27 in the first set!). Hollstein, Flemish, p. 138 (wrongly recording "116 plates and title"). Brunet 10309. Cicognara 1659.

        Confessionum Libri tredecim

Rouen: 1608. 16mo (114 x 78 mm).Collation: A-Z AA-QQ8. [2] ff., ?"580?" [i.e., 569], [51] pp. With pagination errors: p. 188 misnumbered 189; from that page forward odd numbers appear on versos and even numbers on rectos; pp. 520-529 are omitted. Printer?'s woodcut device on title. Clean tear in gutter of B8 entering text block, the paper of sheets P and Q slightly flawed, P6 with paper flaw affecting text, occasional dampstaining. Contemporary laced-case binding of flexible vellum, pair of slits on each cover for pair of fore-edge ties (lacking ties), title lettered in ink on backstrip, a few lower edges untrimmed; pastedown endpapers detached.*** An agreeable pocket edition of the Confessions of Saint Augustine, printed in Rouen, no doubt aiming at the English Catholic market. The Confessions were a ?"recusant favourite?" (Westminster Dictionary of Christian Spirituality, 1983, p. 85). The text was not yet available in English: Sir Tobie Matthew?'s English translation was published in Saint-Omer in 1620 (and was accused of Popist bias). I locate no other copies of this edition, but a 1609 edition from the same press appears to be a reissue of the same sheets, containing the same mispagination (cf. Bodleian online catalogue of their incomplete copy), with an additional appendix containing a life of Augustine extracted from Baronius?' Annales Ecclesiastici (besides the Bodleian copy two French locations are cited by the Catalogue collectif de France: BnF and Valognes in the Manche).

Ouero, Il Cortigiano Disperato

Venice: 1608. 8vo (136 x 91 mm). [1] leaf, [14], 293, [1] pp. A few small ink splashes on title, light dampstain in fore-margins of last few leaves. Seventeenth-century laced-case carta rustica, title (?"Cortigian disperato?") lettered on lower edges, later endpapers.*** Second edition (1st 1592) of a steamy 16th-century prose novella by a writer from Ravenna. Pascoli's erotic romance of star-crossed lovers commences at the battle of Lepanto (1571) and takes place in the ducal court of Barcelona. The story is framed as a flashback related to the narrator by the protagonist, Gioseffo, a young Italian nobleman, found nearly starving in a forest in Spain, where he has been reduced to the life of an animal. Spurned by Panfilia, who prefers Paolo, Gioseffo exacts revenge. While rich in passion, jealousy and suspense, the tragic tale evokes "contemporary courtly life and mores … with some measure of consistency and realism" (Cambridge Companion to the Italian Novel, pp. 25-26). Pascoli's only other works were devotional verses, praised by Tasso. This appears to be a page-for-page reprint of the first edition (1592). Not in Gamba, Novelle italiane. Cf. Gino Raya, Il Romanzo (1950), pp. 104-106.
