        1601 English Rheims-Bishops' New Testament

The text of the New Testament of Jesus Christ, translated out of the vulgar Latine by the Papist... at Rhemes... Whereunto is added the translation out of the original Greeke, commonly used in the Church of England, with a confutation of all such arguments, glosses, and annotations, as conteine manifest impietie, or heresie.... against the Catholic Church of God... (ed.) by W. Fulke. Londini: Impensis G.B., 1601. Folio. When the Jesuit scholars at Rheims succeeded in printing their Catholic translation of the New Testament into English (first edition, 1582), the event affected various English Protestant scholars in different ways: Some were offended or outraged, other intrigued and yet others spurred to action. William Fulke, of Pembroke College, Cambridge, was among those offended, outraged, and spurred: In 1589 he produced the first edition of his work attempting to refute the Rheims New Testament. His approach, however - which was to print the Rheims NT in parallel columns with the Bishops' NT (the then accepted version of the Church of England), supplying accompanying notes and explanations had unforeseen consequences. As Darlow and moule comment, "by printing the Rheims Testament in full, side by side with the Bishops' version, (Fulke) secured for the former a publicity which it would not otherwise have obtained, and was indirectly responsible for the marked influence which Rheims exerted on the Bible of 1611." Alan Thomas elaborates by observing that "many a dignified or felicitous phrase was silently lifted by the editors of King James's Version, and thus passed into the language" (Great Books and Book Collectors, p. 108).This is the second edition of the Rheims - Bishops' version of the New Testament, and thus the second printing of the Rheims in England. all early editions of the Rheims NT are important and most are scarce. 2nd Fulk Edition Complete Copy.         The Historie of the World, commonly called the Naturall Historie. London, Adam Islip, 1601.

1601. Folio (32 x 20 cm). 2 vols. in one. (58), 614, (42) pp. (12), 632, (86) pp. Elaborate woodcut device on title-page; woodcut initials, head and tailpieces. 19th century half morocco & marbled boards, spine tooled in blind, lettered in gilt, raised bands. Pliny the Elder's renowned Natural History in its first publication in English, translated by Philemon Holland, the greatest translator of the Elizabethan age. The "Naturalis Historia" is one of the largest single works to have survived from the Roman empire to the modern day and purports to cover the entire field of ancient knowledge, based on the best authorities available to Pliny. He claims to be the only Roman ever to have undertaken such a work. It comprised 37 books in 10 volumes and covered over 20.000 facts on topics including the fields of botany, zoology, astronomy , geology and mineralogy as well as the exploitation of those resources. It remains a standard work for the Roman period and the advances in technology and understanding of natural phenomena at the time. Some technical advances he discusses are the only sources for those inventions, such as hushing in mining technology or the use of water mills for crushing or grinding corn. Much of what he wrote about has been confirmed by archaeology. "We know from Pliny that there were important pearl fisheries in the Gulf [...] Pliny identifies Tylos (Bahrain) as a place famous for its pearls [... He] attests that pearls were the most highly rated valuable in Roman society, and that those from the Gulf were specially praised [...] The pearl related finds at the site of El-Dur indicate the site was integrated into the maritime trade routes linking the Roman Empire, the Persian Empire, India and South Arabia" (Carter). Book 6 holds a chapter that gives the first detailed account of the regions around the Gulf, including what are now Qatar, the Emirates and Oman. - Includes the final printed leaf in vol. 2, containing the errata and printer's colophon. In this copy, the title-page was evidently cut horizontally, above the device, then pieced back together, backed with early laid paper, with the lower half slightly darkened. STC 20029.         Petits Voyages. Pars I-XII. [Including:] Gasparo Balbi. Frankfurt, Erasmus Kempffer, 1601-1628.

1601. Folio (220 x 317 mm). 12 books bound in 4 volumes. With 10 engr. title pages, 252 engraved illustrations, 3 engr. views, 17 engr. maps, and 3 armorial engravings. Bound at the end are 5 extra maps and views (including a world map and a view of Jerusalem) from Marino Sanuto's 1611 "Liber secretorum fidelium crucis". Slightly later Spanish limp vellum with ms. title to spine. Ties. All twelve books of Théodore de Bry's "Petits Voyages", the greatest single collection of material on early voyages to the East Indies and considered unique in its extraordinary wealth of cartographical and visual material on Africa, India, and South Asia. Notably, book seven includes Gasparo Balbi's groundbreaking account of the Middle East, first published in 1590 as "Viaggio dell' Indie Orientali" - a mere 16 years before this present issue, making this the second appearance in print altogether and the first Latin translation. Balbi, a Venetian jewel merchant, travelled extensively in the Arabian Peninsula in search of precious stones. From Venice he sailed for Aleppo, proceeding to Bir and from there overland to Baghdad, descending the Tigris to Basra, where he embarked for India. While in the Persian Gulf, he studied the pearl industry, noting that the best pearls were to be found at Bahrain and Julfar. He refers to islands in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi (including Sir Bani Yas and Das) and to several coastal settlements that were to become permanently established, such as Dubai and Ras al Khaima. Balbi was the first to record the place names along the coast of modern Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Oman. Practically "none of the names of places on the coast between Qatar and Ras al Khaima occur in other sources before the end of the eighteenth century" (Slot). - A composite set, nine books in their first, the remaining three in their second edition. As several of the travellers were Protestants and their works banned by the Catholic church, this set was censored by the Spanish inquisition of Granada in 1708 (cf. vol. II, verso of title). Condemned authors are identified on the title pages, and various passages considered too crude or suggestive have been struck out or obliterated. In vol. X, a marginal note on p. 27 attempts to refute an account denouncing the cruelty of the Spanish in America. - Last in the library of Jean-Paul Morin, with his bookplate on the first flyleaf. Rather browned throughout, with occasional slight edge defects; two title pages are repaired. Wants a total of 11 plates, as well as the appendix on the Congo in vol. II and the Notice to the Reader in vol. IV. Balbi's section is complete and well preserved, with only two minor censorship marks. The only comparable copy in recent trade history is the Macclesfield set in contemporary gilt calfskin, auctioned off at Sotheby's in 2007 and currently offered by a U.S. dealer consortium for $150,000: that copy, however, is incomplete, wanting the final volumes XI and XII - the latter of which is "so rare that even Church lacked much of the text". Brunet I, 1334. Church 206, 207, 208, 211, 212, 214, 217, 219, 221-225. Cf. Howgego I, B7. Ibrahim Al Abed, Peter Hellyer. United Arab Emirates: A New Perspective. London 2001. Slot, B. J.         Tractatus duo, alter De Ventis, alter perbrevis De Terraemotu. Adiecto indice copiosissimo? Bologna, Giovanni Battista Bellagamba, 1601

Giovanni Battista Bellagamba, 1601. Folio (312x217 mm). [8], 163 [i.e. 165], [13] pp. Woodcut printer?s device on title; head- and tailpieces, decorative initials. Illustrated with 39 engravings, 3 of which are full-page. A perfect full-margin copy in original boards. A most handsomely illustrated book, with fine engraved maps and plates of wind roses, compasses, and other technologies by the physician from Forlì. ?This rare tract, of which only one edition was published, discusses the effects of winds on both land and sea. There are several schematic circular world maps in elegant wind cards and one larger Carta Marina outlining the continents in the style of Gastaldi? (R.W. Shirley, Mapping of the World, no. 232). ?Similarly to Agricola Padovani saw volcanoes as geographical and historical toponyms. ?This mountain snatched Pliny,? he wrote of Vesuvius. Using the examples of the Campi Flegrei, Vesuvius, Etna and the Aeolian Islands, Padovani argued that there were places where the hot press of subterranean winds and ?matter? within the crust ignited fierce fires, to the point that ?so much smoke and fire pours out that it combusts and destroys nearly everything around.? Padovani had an entire vocabulary for the features of such places: speluncis, antris, cloacis, et scrobibus (caves, caverns, sewers, and trenches). There were no observations to speak, however? (S. Cocco, Watching Vesuvius, p. 31). The last part of the work is devoted to earthquakes, and Padovani ?envisioned an early warning system for earthquakes, and, also, categorized phenomena that were either concurrent with or subsequent to an earthquake, similarly to the typology of things seen before, during, and after an eruption that Vesuvius writers described three decades later. Earthquakes were more frequent than eruptions, and in this respect he was no lacking in a language of observation? (ibid.).

Christliche catholische postill.

Ainsi que le : The Primacy of the Postils : Catholics, Protestants, and the Dissemination of ideas in early modern Germany par John M. Frymire qui souligne l'importance des Postils de Canisius.

1601. Incisione in rame, mm 180x260.

(Giuseppe Lusina in D.B.I., II, 1960). Norman, 40: "Took into account the patient's mental state and its bearing on health as well as the usual physical diagnostic signs". Garrison-Morton, 2194. ).       Bellagamba, 1601. in folio, pp. (20), 1 - 72, 81 - 317, (1; completo. Scripture mistaken. The ground of Protestants and common plea of all new reformers against the ancient Catholicke religion of England. Many texts quite mistaken by novelists are layd open, and redressed in this treatis, by restoring them to theyr proper sense, according to which it is made manifest, that none of them are of force against the ancient Catholicke religion.

Spencer (1601-71, spelled "Spenser" on title-page; sometimes known as John Tyrwhitt) "matriculated at Christ's College, Cambridge, in 1618 and during his time in Cambridge converted to the Roman Catholic church. He joined the Society of Jesus in Watten on 14 March 1626. From the noviciate he moved to Liège to study theology in either 1628 or 1629. He was ordained priest on 18 March 1632. He completed his final year of Jesuit formation, tertianship, in Ghent in 1634" (DNB online). From then until his death he served or worked variously as a church prefect, catechist, missionary, professor of moral theology, controversialist, and military chaplain. He lived in England and on the continent. In defending Catholicism he addresses many of the doctrinal issues and religious practices that were contentious: e.g., the worship of saints, angels, and holy images (and the making of the latter); justification by faith alone; purgatory; and the merit of good works. The work is printed single-column, in roman with some italic, and with woodcut initials and tailpieces. It ends with an index.

Venetia: Gio. Battista Bertoni, 1601. Second Italian Edition n. Even though this work on early mechanics, especially as they relate to puppet shows, is a more whimsical book than the author's influential "Pneumatics," it nevertheless made important contributions to the history of technology. First published in Italian in 1589, "Automata" describes two cabinet puppet theaters which perform without human manipulation. One shows Dionysus and his bacchantes worshipping at an altar, the other enacts the shipwreck from the myth of Nauplius, complete with leaping dolphins. The parts moved by means of strings and drums attached to a heavy lead weight, which rested on a sack of grain in which there was a hole. As the grain drained out through the hole, the weight was slowly lowered to the ground, pulling the strings, turning the drums, and operating the puppets. The illustrations here show both the audience view and the behind-the-scenes mechanisms of the puppet theaters. As DSB observes, this work "represents a marvel of ingenuity with very scant mechanical means." According to Singer, "The accounts of these automata are interesting as introducing for the first time mechanisms that formed the basis of later machines. Among them are the crank, the camshaft, and systems of rotation with counter-weights.". 203 x 140 mm. (8 x 5 1/2"). 47, [1] (colophon) leaves.Translated into Italian by Bernardino Baldi. Second Italian Edition. Contemporary limp vellum, flat spine with later (chipped) paper label, ink titling to tail edge of text block (lacking front pastedown). Title page with architectural border, 11 engravings of mechanical toys (six of them full-page) and 11 woodcuts in the text. Inside front cover with bookplate of Wigan Free Library; front flyleaf with that institution's embossed stamp and ink deaccession stamp; flyleaf also with (crossed-out) ink inscription dated 1636. Riccardi I, 67 (1st ed.); Singer II, 635; DSB IV, 312; Graesse III, 258. Vellum a bit soiled and (naturally?) speckled, front free endpaper with old cellotape repair to horizontal tear, title page a little soiled, minor worming to fore margin (away from text and images), otherwise an excellent copy, the leaves clean, fresh, and rather bright, and the binding pleasant and sound.         The Historie of the World. Commonly called, the Naturall Historie the first [-second] tome.

London: printed by Adam Islip, 1601 - 2 volumes, folio (318 x 210 mm). Contemporary red morocco, spines richly gilt, black morocco labels, sides with gilt-ruled border and frame with gilt-stamped floral motifs at outer corners, gilt edges. Housed in a burgundy flat back cloth box made by the Chelsea Bindery. Bookplates of the notable book collector John Dunn Gardner (1811–1903; known as John Townshend until 1843 and sometimes styled "Earl of Leicester"); the monogram bookplate of "DHP"; bookplate of the lawyer, banker and bibliophile Robert S. Pirie (1934–2015), acquired by him from Seven Gables book shop. Front joints cracking at ends and with old superficial repairs, first headcap chipped, a few abrasions and small stains on covers, minor marginal soiling with an occasional marginal spot, light dampstain in fore-margins of vol. 2 slightly affecting text, lacking first blank leaf in each volume, remains a most attractive copy in contemporary red morocco. Titles with woodcut allegorical device, woodcut head- and tailpieces, decorative initials, last leaf with errata on recto and colophon on verso. First edition in English, first issue, with the Islip imprint. Of this translation, Lowndes says "A work of immense labour, and what few men of his time could have executed in a superior manner to Dr Holland." "This encyclopaedia of ancient knowledge about the natural world had already had a great indirect influence in England, as elsewhere in Europe, but had not been translated into English before, and would not be again for 250 years. Indeed, after four centuries, Holland is still the only translator of this work to attempt to evoke its literary richness and beauty" (ODNB). The work was used as a source by Shakespeare for Othello and King Lear. "The importance of Pliny lay not so much that he was an inexhaustible source for monsters, eclipses, and the stranger habits of all created things, but that in the pages of Philemon Holland's translation Shakespeare found that emphasis on Nature which he employed and re-interpreted in the tragedy" (Evans, The Language of Shakespeare's Plays).
