With an insert view of Limoges at top right. Two strapwork cartouches and scale. Copperplate engraving / etching with contemporary hand colouring on hand laid paper. Description: Source unknown, to be determined.Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Jodocus Hondius' after an anonymous artist. Jodocus Hondius (1563-1612) was the founder of the famous 17th century Dutch map publishing family. Hondius, along with sons Jodocus II and Henricus and son-in-law Jan Janssonius, was prominent in Dutch cartography and competed with the emerging Blaeu family map business. When Jodocus Hondius acquired the copperplates of the Mercator atlas and decided to re-issue them in 1606, he prepared this map for inclusion in his Atlas sive Cosmographicae. Condition: Good, given age. Edges slightly browned. A few minor small creases. Some miniscule holes near middle fold, hardly visible. Original middle fold as issued.         Antique Print-SENEGAL-GULF OF GUINEA-ST. THOMAE-AFRICA-Mercator-Hondius-c. 1600

      - Antique print, titled: 'Guineae Nova Descriptio.' - This very decorative map shows the West African coast from Senegal (the 'Rio Senega' is the Senegal River) to Cape Lopez on the Gulf of Guinea just below the equator. The island of St. Thomae, which today forms a Portuguese province, is shown in detail in the small inset bottom left. Part of Libya is also depicted. The ocean is rendered in the typical moire style of Mercator, and the several strapwork designs are simple yet imposing. The map is one of six new maps of Africa to be included in Hondius' first edition of Mercator's Atlas. Etching/engraving on hand laid paper. Description: Source unknown, to be determined.Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Mercator-Hondius' after an anonymous artist. Mercator was born in Rupelmonde in Flanders and studied in Louvain under Gemma Frisius, Dutch writer, astronomer and mathematician. The excellence of his work brought him the patronage of Charles V, but in spite of his favor with the Emperor he was caught up in the persecution of Lutheran protestants and charged with heresy, fortunately without serious consequences. No doubt the fear of further persecution influenced his move in 1552 to Duisburg, where he continued the production of maps, globes and instruments. Mercator's sons and grandsons, were all cartographers and made their contributions in various ways to his atlas. Rumold, in particular, was responsible for the complete edition in 1595. The map plates were bought in 1604 by Jodocus Hondius who, with his sons, Jodocus II and Henricus, published enlarged editions which dominated the map market for the following twenty to thirty years. Condition: Good, given age. Very small tear upper middle fold, hardly visible. Light vertical crease left and right of middle fold. A few small unobtrusive creases. Original middle fold as issued. Hendrik Hondius I (1573-1650) was one the very active printmaker/publishers in the early part of the 17th. Century. He was based in The Hague. Pieter Stevens II, Flemish (c. 1567-1624 or after). Pieter Stevens probably trained in Antwerp before becoming a master landscape painter there in 1589. His early drawings were of ancient monuments in Rome and Naples, and were most likely copies of Jan Brueghel the Elder’s work. Stevens was appointed court painter to Emperor Rudolf II in Prague in 1594. During this period, he specialized in scenes of peasant life and mountains. His designs were used as furniture decorations and also engraved. From 1620 to 1624, Stevens worked for Prince Charles of Liechtenstein. Condition: Very good, given age. Ample margins.         Antique Map-BRITISH ISLES-BRITTANNICARUM-Wierix-Ortelius-c. 1600

      - Antique map, titled: 'Britannicarum Insularum Typus.' - (British Isles.) The very decorative map shows the British Isles including England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland including decorative scroll-cartouches and ships. Etching / engraving on hand laid (verge type) paper. Watermark: Shield with horn. Description: From an undetermined Latin ed. of the Ortelius Atlas: 'Theatrum Orbis Terrarum'. The map was first published in the 1595 edition of Ortelius' atlas. The map was made based upon modern information from Mercator's 1564 map of the British Isles, improved by a new outline from Saxton's 1579 map (Meurer p. 197, Karrow 56/16, p. 387-388) and ancient knowledge from Diodorus Siculus, Plinius, Appianus, Tacitus, Cæsar, Strabo and numerous other Roman writers. Ref: Van den Broecke #192; Shirley, R.W. (BI to 1650) 186, pl.42. Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Jan Wierix' after 'Abraham Ortelius'. Koeman notes that Jan Wierix was the engraver of this map incl. the very decorative ships. Abraham Ortelius was born 1528 in Antwerp. He studied mathematics, Greek and Latin and travelled a lot across Europe. He established a business in dealing with books and drawing maps. His first remarkable map was a 8 sheet world map in the year 1564, but only three copies have survived. In 1570 he issued the "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum", the first modern "Atlas" with uniformly sized maps in a systematic collection. The term "Atlas" was not used until Mercator introduced it 20 years later. Most of the maps in Theatrum have been engraved by Frans Hogenberg. At the time of publication, the atlas was the most expensive book ever printed. Nevertheless it was a big success and around 7000 copies have been printed until 1612 in many editions and six different languages. Beside the Theatrum, Ortelius compiled a series of historical maps and published it in the "Parergon Theatri" which was bound with the Theatrum from 1579 onwards or published separately. The family business, called De Vergulde Passer ('The gilded compasses'), was situated in Warmoesstraat, and Jan Muller worked there for many years. He may have been apprenticed to Hendrik Goltzius in Haarlem. Between 1594 and 1602 he is thought to have gone to Italy, where he stayed in Rome and Naples. His work can be found in major museums worldwide. Cornelis Cornelisz. Van Haarlem (1562-1638) was a Mannerist painter from Haarlem. Condition: Very good, given age. Gennaro (January): Kitchen scene; Febraro (February): Jousting tournament; Marzo (March): Hunting and shepherds; Aprile (April): Gardening; Maggio (May): Falcon and dog hunting; Giugno (June): Harvest, shearing sheep and washing wool; Luglio (July): Harvest and threshing; Agosto (August): Fishing and swimming; Settembre (September): Grape harvest and making wine; Ottobre (October): Sowing and ploughing; Novembre (November): Duck hunting, pigs rooting in the forest, and forestry.         Madonna della scodella

      The Madonna, seated with the infant Christ on her lap, holds a bowl for the infant Baptist to drink from; S. Anne watches from behind with a hand raised. The preparatory drawing is at the Louvre (ex coll. Mariette, Inv. 7142). First engraving realized by Annibale Carracci after 1600, showing the signs of a renewed approach to engraving. Remarkable is in fact the strong chiaroscuro, emphasized by the hatched background against which are disposed the sculpted figures. Although the figures are engaged in simple and natural activities, the composition is carefully studied and masterfully engraved with regular hatchings and signs. This composition became immediately highly popular as its numerous copies testify (seventeen are documented). From the second state the name of the publisher was added, Nicolaes van Aelst, publisher active in Brussels and Rome. In the latter city he had a workshop in via della Pace from 1582 to 1613. Three states of this print are documented, however the exemplar at the Museum in Bologna (Inv. 4730) is suggested to be a fourth state. Signed above right: 'Annib.         Portrait of Carel Utenhove

      Beautiful half-length portrait of Carel Utenhove, humanist from Gent, later also burgomaster of the city. De Passe was his intimate friend since his stay in Cologne. 'Matthias Quad has left an excellent account of Carel Utenhove, relating that he was a linguistic genius. [...] Utenhove died in 1600 at the age of 64, and the city council allowed him to be borne to the Protestant cemetery outside the city walls followed by a solemn procession of nobles and scholars. Utenhove' s verses are found on De Passe' s prints from 1591 to 1600, so he was his first contributor. He usually signed with the Latinised form of his name, but sometimes with the Greek one, and occasionally supplied poems for allegories, such as the 'Anthropomorphooseoos eikones' or 'The ages of man'(1599) [...] In 1595, De Passe drew and engraved Utenhove' s portrait in his honour ('Honoris ipsius causa dipingebat...'). The likeness was later copied in a silver medallion by Simon de Passe, probably as a present for one of Utenhove' s relatives. There are two Latin poems on the portrait. One is by the Neo-Latin poet Paul Melissus, the other an encomium by the well-known Heidelberg physician and scholar Johannes Posthius which echoes the figure of speech introduced by Dürer and widely applied in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, namely that a portrait may reproduce someone's outer appearance but cannot record his spirit. A person's spirit, which lives on his work, is regarded as the best part of a human being, not his physical appearance. Posthius's verse expressed this idea as follows: 'In this print one sees what was mortal: / The eloquent mouth and face of Utenhove. / The image of his spirit, expressed in his learned books, / Will survive all ages, immortal.' [...].In 1595, the year in which the portrait was engraved, Utenhove sent it to the Antwerp historian Emanuel van Meteren in London, who pasted both the print and the covering letter into his album amicorum.'       London Adam Islip 1600 - Folio, (10), 1404, (40) pp., woodcut title, initials, head-and tailpieces, woodcut of Queen Elizabeth, to whom this edition is dedicated, on verso of title page and portrait of Livy. Contemporary dark brown calf rebacked, blind-panelled boards, raised bands, corners worn, a fine example. Philemon Holland's Livy was the first in a series of unabridged translations of canonical Roman works that made him, in Thomas Fuller's famous phrase "the translator general in his age" (Peter Culhane, Philemon Holland's Livy). "Holland's first book, the first complete rendering of Livy into English, was published in 1600 when he was nearly fifty. It was a work of great importance, presented in a grand folio volume of 1458 pages, and dedicated to the queen. The translation set out to be lucid and unpretentious, and achieved its aim with marked success. It is accurate, and often lively, and although it does not attempt to imitate the terseness of Latin, it avoids prolixity. As part of his book Holland translated two other substantial works—an ancient epitome of Roman history which provides an outline of the lost books of Livy, and Bartolomeo Marliani's guide to the topography of Rome—as well as some smaller texts. These were taken from the edition of Livy published in Paris in 1573; by translating them, Holland was making available in English a great learned compendium of historical knowledge, not simply a single ancient author" (ODNB). One of the greatest and certainly the most popular of the Roman writers of history, Titus Livius began his great work between 27 and 25 B.C., completing it only shortly before his death about ten years later. In it he gives the complete history of the city of Rome, from its foundation to the death of Augustus. Because he was writing under the emperor Augustus, Livy's history emphasizes the great triumphs of Rome. He wrote his history with embellished accounts of Roman heroism in order to promote the new type of government implemented by Augustus when he became emperor. In Livy's preface to his history, he said that he did not care whether his personal fame remained in darkness, as long as his work helped to "preserve the memory of the deeds of the world's preeminent nation."       "The Madonna, seated with the infant Christ on her lap, holds a bowl for the infant Baptist to drink from; S. Anne watches from behind with a hand raised. The preparatory drawing is at the Louvre (ex coll. Mariette, Inv. 7142). First engraving realized by Annibale Carracci after 1600, showing the signs of a renewed approach to engraving. Remarkable is in fact the strong chiaroscuro, emphasized by the hatched background against which are disposed the sculpted figures. Although the figures are engaged in simple and natural activities, the composition is carefully studied and masterfully engraved with regular hatchings and signs. This composition became immediately highly popular as its numerous copies testify (seventeen are documented). From the second state the name of the publisher was added, Nicolaes van Aelst, publisher active in Brussels and Rome. In the latter city he had a workshop in via della Pace from 1582 to 1613. Three states of this print are documented, however the exemplar at the Museum in Bologna (Inv. 4730) is suggested to be a fourth state. Signed above right: 'Annib. Four raised bands, title and author in gilt in panels two and three, date in gilt to the spine base. Title page (worst page) browned, names and date in faded ink, two lines written in Latin, edges frayed , some loss. Page three has two words partly obscured by a stain. Page edges discoloured with age, some creasing.

        Predigt Johannes des Täufers. Lavierte Tuschfederzeichnung in Braun.

       Um 1600. Auf feinem Bütten mit Wasserzeichen \"Großes Wappenschild mit 4 und B (legiert)\". 31,5 x 41 cm (blattgroß). Großes, viellfiguriges Blatt des Manierismus. Die Figuren werden mit einer feinen Umrißlinie wiedergegeben, die mit sicherem Strich die meist komplizierten Bewegungen und viele Drehungen beschreibt. Die Lavierung modelliert die Zeichnung und unterstreicht die Bewegungen effekvoll. Johannes steht im linken Drittel des Bildes auf einem Felsen, seine erhöhte Position wird durch seinen Fingerzeig nach oben aufgenommen und verstärkt. Die Figurengruppen links und rechts am Bildrand werden jeweils durch Bäume kompositorisch gestützt. - Zuschreibung durch Direktor der Albertina, Dr. Konrad Oberhuber, Schreiben vom 21.05.1990. - Vertikale Knick -bzw. Quetschspur, geglättet. Drei Ecken sorgsam und kaum wahrnehmbar ergänzt, ein winzige Restaurierung rechts von der Johannes Figur. Manierismus, Schule von Fontainebleau, 2.
