Bibl. Van der Linde-Niemeijeriana 404; Cat. Schaakboekerij Niemeijer 989; Coll. Rimington-Wilson 566. Late edition of the French translation of one of the most famous early chess books, originally written in Italian and first presented in manuscript by the author, the famous Calabrian chess player Giocchino Greco (ca. 1600-1635) to the King of Naples in 1619. At first only manuscript transcriptions were made. The first French edition appeared in 1669, after the first English edition of 1656. After a short explanation of the general principles of the game of chess, it teaches chess players by presenting chess games and problems only, often with a possible defense added as well. The book is divided into two parts, the first with 39 games, extensively recorded, and the second part with 55 more advanced chess problems. With a partly removed owner's inscription on the title-page, repeated and partly removed at the first page of the main text. Slightly browned, but otherwise in very good condition. Binding slightly rubbed and with slightly soiled paste-downs, otherwise very good.

The theorike and practike of moderne warres, discoursed in dialogue wise.

London: printed by Peter Short,, 1600. Wherein is declared the neglect of martiall discipline: the inconvenience thereof: the imperfections of manie training captaines: a redresse by due regard had: the fittest weapons for our modern warre: the use of the same: the parts of a perfect souldier in generall and in particular: the officers in degrees, with their severall duties: the imbattailing of men in formes now most in use: with figures and tables to the same: with sundrie other martiall points. Comprehended in sixe bookes. London: printed [by Richard Field] for William Ponsonby, 1598; [bound after:] EDMONDES, Sir Clement. Observations, upon the five first bookes of Caesars Commentaries, setting fourth the practise of the art military, in the time of the Roman Empire. Wherein are handled all the chiefest points of their discipline, with the true reasons of every part, together with such instructions as may be drawn from their proceedings, for the better direction of our moderne warres. 2 works bound in 1, folio (281 x 184 mm). Contemporary limp vellum, spine lettered in manuscript, lacks ties. Barret: woodcut vignette to title, full-page woodcut arms of dedicatee on title verso, woodcut diagrams in text, leaf O1 (a singleton) is a folded diagram, full-page woodcut arms of author on last leaf verso (Y6v). Edmondes: 6 engraved plates (4 double-page). With 19th-century ownership inscriptions ("Mr R. Thomas, from Mr. Wm. Owen his cousin, North Wales" and "R. G. Thomas 1842, from his mother") and later ownership inscriptions of Spencer John Skipper, a South Australian-born journalist, and his eldest son Herbert Stanley Skipper (1880–1962), solicitor and promoter of libraries, all to the front pastedown. Barret diagram on F6v just shaved at fore edge margin; Edmondes first plate just shaved at fore edges, third plate with small loss of border at foot; these minor flaws consequent to the folding plates being bound in and trimmed as double-page. Vellum a little short at foot and likely re-cased at an early date, front joint split at head, small repair to fore edge of front cover, slight fraying to first two leaves of Edmondes, small dampstain at foot, lower third of folding leaf O1 in Barret skilfully reattached, a few minor marks and spill-burns, still a very good copy. First editions of two of the most authoritative of the military treatises issued in the period. At a time when England had largely been isolated from developments elsewhere, Barret derived his authority from "having spent the most part of my time in the profession of Armes, and that among forraine nations, as the French, the Dutch, the Italian, and Spaniard". His book, dedicated to Henry Herbert, earl of Pembroke, and his son William, later the co-dedicatee of the 1623 Shakespeare first folio, is finely printed by Shakespeare's Stratford schoolfellow Richard Field. The downfall of Shakespeare's Parolles in All's Well that Ends Well ("the gallant militarist … that had the whole theoricke of warre in the knot of his scarfe, and the practise in the chape of his dagger" – IV, iii) may be an echo of the book's title. Edmondes's work is a commentary on books 1–5 of Julius Caesar's Gallic Wars, together with an abridged translation of the books. "Edmondes explained that the work was directed at English soldiers and he supplemented his comments on Roman military practice with observations on contemporary campaigns, including those of the English forces in France and the war in Ireland, as well as the battle of Dreux of 1562 between the royal army and protestant forces in France. He also discussed the question of how to deal with an invasion of England, whether to oppose an invading army at the coast or to withdraw and offer battle later. His preference was to fortify the coast of Kent and oppose a landing. As well as military matters, he included an explanation of the causes of tides" (ODNB).

        Antique Print-SENEGAL-GULF OF GUINEA-ST. THOMAE-AFRICA-Mercator-Hondius-c. 1600

      - Antique print, titled: 'Guineae Nova Descriptio.' - This very decorative map shows the West African coast from Senegal (the 'Rio Senega' is the Senegal River) to Cape Lopez on the Gulf of Guinea just below the equator. The island of St. Thomae, which today forms a Portuguese province, is shown in detail in the small inset bottom left. Part of Libya is also depicted. The ocean is rendered in the typical moire style of Mercator, and the several strapwork designs are simple yet imposing. The map is one of six new maps of Africa to be included in Hondius' first edition of Mercator's Atlas. Etching/engraving on hand laid paper. Description: Source unknown, to be determined.Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Mercator-Hondius' after an anonymous artist. Mercator was born in Rupelmonde in Flanders and studied in Louvain under Gemma Frisius, Dutch writer, astronomer and mathematician. The excellence of his work brought him the patronage of Charles V, but in spite of his favor with the Emperor he was caught up in the persecution of Lutheran protestants and charged with heresy, fortunately without serious consequences. No doubt the fear of further persecution influenced his move in 1552 to Duisburg, where he continued the production of maps, globes and instruments. Mercator's sons and grandsons, were all cartographers and made their contributions in various ways to his atlas. Rumold, in particular, was responsible for the complete edition in 1595. The map plates were bought in 1604 by Jodocus Hondius who, with his sons, Jodocus II and Henricus, published enlarged editions which dominated the map market for the following twenty to thirty years. Condition: Good, given age. Very small tear upper middle fold, hardly visible. Light vertical crease left and right of middle fold. A few small unobtrusive creases. Original middle fold as issued.         Madonna della scodella

The Madonna, seated with the infant Christ on her lap, holds a bowl for the infant Baptist to drink from; S. Anne watches from behind with a hand raised. The preparatory drawing is at the Louvre (ex coll. Mariette, Inv. 7142). First engraving realized by Annibale Carracci after 1600, showing the signs of a renewed approach to engraving. Remarkable is in fact the strong chiaroscuro, emphasized by the hatched background against which are disposed the sculpted figures. Although the figures are engaged in simple and natural activities, the composition is carefully studied and masterfully engraved with regular hatchings and signs. This composition became immediately highly popular as its numerous copies testify (seventeen are documented). From the second state the name of the publisher was added, Nicolaes van Aelst, publisher active in Brussels and Rome. In the latter city he had a workshop in via della Pace from 1582 to 1613. Three states of this print are documented, however the exemplar at the Museum in Bologna (Inv. 4730) is suggested to be a fourth state. Signed above right: 'Annib. Carracius in./ et fecit. 1606./ Nico van Aelst for.' Etching and engraving on laid paper with a vague circular watermark, small margins; platemark: 123 x 161 mm, total: 125 x 163 mm; state III/3 (or III/4); warn out plate on the corners; on the verso cifres in characoal, top right and left corner restored, lower left margin also; selected literature: Bartsch (1818), XVIII vol., p.186, n. 9; Le Blanc (1854), p. 606, n. 6; Nagler (1858) p. 458, n. 1053; The Illustrated Bartsch (1980), p. 395, 9-I (186) and (1996), 39 (2 Comm.), p. 256,n. 3906.020

Professionally restored tear to one leaf. Modern brown calf boards. A very good copy. Exposition of the 613 commandments of the Torah, first published anonymously in 13th century Spain. With introduction by Rabbi Yehuda Aryeh of Modena. This work systematically discusses the commandments (mitzvot) both from a legal and a moral perspective, by first linking the mitzvah to its Biblical source and then addressing its philosophical roots. Following this, the book presents a brief overview of the halakha (practical Jewish law) governing its observance - usually based on Maimonides' Mishneh Torah, also noting the punishment for disobedience - and closes with a summary as to the mitzva's applicability.         Portrait of Carel Utenhove

Beautiful half-length portrait of Carel Utenhove, humanist from Gent, later also burgomaster of the city. De Passe was his intimate friend since his stay in Cologne. 'Matthias Quad has left an excellent account of Carel Utenhove, relating that he was a linguistic genius. [...] Utenhove died in 1600 at the age of 64, and the city council allowed him to be borne to the Protestant cemetery outside the city walls followed by a solemn procession of nobles and scholars. Utenhove' s verses are found on De Passe' s prints from 1591 to 1600, so he was his first contributor. He usually signed with the Latinised form of his name, but sometimes with the Greek one, and occasionally supplied poems for allegories, such as the 'Anthropomorphooseoos eikones' or 'The ages of man'(1599) [...] In 1595, De Passe drew and engraved Utenhove' s portrait in his honour ('Honoris ipsius causa dipingebat...'). The likeness was later copied in a silver medallion by Simon de Passe, probably as a present for one of Utenhove' s relatives. There are two Latin poems on the portrait. One is by the Neo-Latin poet Paul Melissus, the other an encomium by the well-known Heidelberg physician and scholar Johannes Posthius which echoes the figure of speech introduced by Dürer and widely applied in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, namely that a portrait may reproduce someone's outer appearance but cannot record his spirit. A person's spirit, which lives on his work, is regarded as the best part of a human being, not his physical appearance. Posthius's verse expressed this idea as follows: 'In this print one sees what was mortal: / The eloquent mouth and face of Utenhove. / The image of his spirit, expressed in his learned books, / Will survive all ages, immortal.' [...].In 1595, the year in which the portrait was engraved, Utenhove sent it to the Antwerp historian Emanuel van Meteren in London, who pasted both the print and the covering letter into his album amicorum.'         The Romane Historie (.) Written by T. Livius of Padua. Also, the Breviaries of L. Florus: with a Chronologie to the whole Historie: and the Topographie of Rome in old time.

London Adam Islip 1600 - Folio, (10), 1404, (40) pp., woodcut title, initials, head-and tailpieces, woodcut of Queen Elizabeth, to whom this edition is dedicated, on verso of title page and portrait of Livy. Contemporary dark brown calf rebacked, blind-panelled boards, raised bands, corners worn, a fine example. Philemon Holland's Livy was the first in a series of unabridged translations of canonical Roman works that made him, in Thomas Fuller's famous phrase "the translator general in his age" (Peter Culhane, Philemon Holland's Livy). "Holland's first book, the first complete rendering of Livy into English, was published in 1600 when he was nearly fifty. It was a work of great importance, presented in a grand folio volume of 1458 pages, and dedicated to the queen. The translation set out to be lucid and unpretentious, and achieved its aim with marked success. It is accurate, and often lively, and although it does not attempt to imitate the terseness of Latin, it avoids prolixity. As part of his book Holland translated two other substantial works—an ancient epitome of Roman history which provides an outline of the lost books of Livy, and Bartolomeo Marliani's guide to the topography of Rome—as well as some smaller texts. These were taken from the edition of Livy published in Paris in 1573; by translating them, Holland was making available in English a great learned compendium of historical knowledge, not simply a single ancient author" (ODNB). One of the greatest and certainly the most popular of the Roman writers of history, Titus Livius began his great work between 27 and 25 B.C., completing it only shortly before his death about ten years later. In it he gives the complete history of the city of Rome, from its foundation to the death of Augustus. Because he was writing under the emperor Augustus, Livy's history emphasizes the great triumphs of Rome. He wrote his history with embellished accounts of Roman heroism in order to promote the new type of government implemented by Augustus when he became emperor. In Livy's preface to his history, he said that he did not care whether his personal fame remained in darkness, as long as his work helped to "preserve the memory of the deeds of the world's preeminent nation."
