        SANTANDER.

Copies of the Draft Depositions of the witnesses on each side, (Emelene, of Halsall) and HUNTER (Thomas, of Aughton, both near Ormskirk, Lancashire)

1580 - including the husband, in English, and of the Final Decree by Robert Leche, LL.D., principal officer of the Archdeacon of Chester's court, in Latin, all with transcriptions. Thomas Tatlock, 56, and William Scarsbrick, 40, who had known both since infancy, depone for Emelene, that at the time of the marriage, 2½ years previously at the house of Thomas Halsall, by "Sir James, Curat of Formbie", Emelene was "about ten years of age" and Thomas "not above thirteen", even on the morning of the marriage the children "knewe nott of ytt but were compelled . by there parents", Thomas Hunter refers to his coming "to lawfull yeares of discretion", Emelene had lived at his father's house till last Christmas, but "he could not abyde the saide Emelene and never woulde", he approached Scarsbrick as his kinsman, and Tatlock as his father's executor, to procure a divorce, he had never "saide or done any acte that he thincketh in his conscience hee ought to have her to his wife" and vouches for her virginity, he can not tell "whye they were maried in a howse" instead of in church. The final decree says that everything has been thoroughly considered, confirms that nothing Thomas has done invalidates his claim, that the marriage is annulled and both are free to remarry with a clear conscience. The depositions 4 sides 12" x 8¼", the judgment 1 side 11" x 10½", Chester, 24th March 1579 (new style the depositions, neatly restored at top and bottom with old paper, with loss of a number of words or phrases (most can be supplied by context The depositions are interesting as working copies, with considerable running emendations and second thoughts. The judgment bears a note of the promulgation of the decree in another hand and a list of people present. William Withnes appeared for Emelene, and Henry Pennant for Thomas, though both children were in fact seeking the same end.

Vestigii del monumento overo mole d'Adriano. Oggi li chiamano castello et ponte sant' Angelo".

Interesting picture out of Du Perac, I vestigi delle antichità di Roma, that has been published for the first time in 1575. Du Peracs vendutes are characterized by great topographical accurateness and are an exellent source for the ruins that stilll existed at that time. The observer views over the angels-bridge onto the Hadriansmausoleum, at the left side the Passetto that was build by Alexander VI in 1500, the covered alleyway of St. Peter. The map has a pencil grid, probably hints of a copier. Bleistift-Raster, wohl Spuren eines Kopisten.

Missa... for 8 voices. Manuscript music. Tenor 1 part. Italian, ca. 1600

Large octavo (ca. 240 x 179 mm.). Sewn into early grey wrappers with manuscript titling to upper: "Primus Chorus Tenor Missa binae Tenor Primi Chori à 8." 14 pp. including one ruled page without notation. Notated ink on hand-ruled staves. & & This work is unrecorded in both Grove and RISM. . Mel, a Flemish composer, was "mainly active in Italy. He was of a landed family whose fortunes were closely linked to the Duchy of Lorraine... After Spain annexed Portugal in 1580 Mel went to Rome, where his name appears in that year on a subscription list for two new bells for the Flemish church, S Maria in Campo Santo. Whether or not he studied composition with Palestrina as Baini claimed, his first published works indicate that he was well acquainted with Palestrina's style. The title-pages and dedications of his printed books show that in addition to his continued allegiance to Lorraine... He enjoyed the friendship and patronage of the Valignani, the Henrici and Cardinal Gabriel Paleotto... Mel was well educated and a prolific composer whose aristocratic lineage and connections seem to have ensured him at least a modest fame. His works have not been edited, and have therefore not received the study they deserve. His sacred pieces show him to have been a craftsman, well trained in Dutch counterpoint and a diligent imitator of the Palestrinian style." Patricia Ann Myers in Grove online

ORBIS CHRISTIANI STATUS (1590) / [Jean de Serres] V. Partis Commentariorum de statu religionis et reipublicae in regno Galliae (Leiden, 1580) / [Conrad Memmius] Jehova Vindex (Bremen, 1590)

      E. Vignon & Bernhardus Petrus 1580-1590, Geneva, Leiden and Bremen - Together 3 works in one volume. 8vo. (ORBIS): 174 pp., 2 blank ff. (COMMENTARIORUM): 8 ff., 208 pp. (JEHOVA VIDEX): 2 parts in one volume. 12 ff., 34 ff. Contemporary half pigskin blind-tooled, upper compartment with the monogram of the first owner "M.M.H." in the lower the date "1590," boards painted black, sprinkled edges (front endleaf loosening). IN VERY GOOD ANTIQUARIAN CONDITION. Preserved in a fitted cloth case by Cloverleaf Studio A fascinating Sammelband of three historical works relating to the Civil Wars in France at the end of the 16th-century, here preserved in a very attractive, strictly contemporary binding (dated 1590). ORBIS CHRISTIANI STATUS. First (?) Edition, bound third in the present Sammelband, which contains frequent and apparently unrecorded references to Elizabeth I, and also to America, i.a. the description of the Portuguese and Spanish possessions in the New World (p. 132 / 158), the West and East Indies (p. 138), an account of the Spanish Armada off the coast of Scotland and Ireland (pp. 143-4), etc. An extraordinary passage on p. 132 informs the reader that the vast lands of "America" (sic) and the West Indies were conquered "with appalling cruelty" (sic!) and were subjugated by authority of the Pope himself (sic!). The Orbis Christiani Status gives a strictly contemporary account of the rebellion of the Duc de Guise against royal authority, his assassination in 1588, and the eventual triumph of Henri IV. As per Hugh M. Richmond's 'Shakespeare's Navarre': "When Henri IV won his famous victories in 1589-1590 he became a folk-hero of the English, with their ineradicable taste for romance on horseback. There was every reason for fashionable young playwrights to exploit this popularity in the early 1590's, and Shakespeare was no exception. Love's Labour's Lost is thus in part an attempt to define the origins of a contemporary hero, and it develops motifs and character types which reappear in several of its author's later works. We are now able to judge what drew the young and ambitious Shakespeare to this material, and why it proved so seminal to his awareness. In the first place Love's Labour's Lost is a work of imaginative journalism exploiting contemporary political fashion" (SOURCE: Hugh M. Richmond, "Shakespeare's Navarre" in: The Huntington Library Quarterly, Vol. 42, No. 3. Summer, 1979, pp. 193-216). Adams O-256. Not in Moeckli, Les livres imprimes a Geneve de 1550 a 1600. Conrad Memmius' JEHOVA VINDEX: "The author of this somewhat rare opuscule, published just after the accession of Henry IV, quotes with approval the sentiment of Tertullian that the monarch is second only to God. There is no third power that is free from Subjection to him, or has authority over kings themselves. The writer is opposing the pretensions of Sixtus V; but in his zeal to support royalty, he ignores the superiority of the states-general which was asserted by Hotman. He even goes to the length of justifying the King's predecessor in his treacherous murder of the Duke of Guise and his brother, the cardinal ('Jehova Vindex, sive de rebus Gallicis,' Bremae, 1590). Whether the author, who calls himself Jacobus Francus, was a Frenchman or a German, he fully represented the sentiment of the Huguenots, and was rewarded by the papal authorities by honorable mention in the Index Librorum Prohibitorum" (SOURCE: Henry Martyn Baird, "Hotman and the 'Franco-Gallia'" in: American Historical Review, vol. 1, No. 4 [1896], pp. 629-630, notes). First published in 1589, the present copy belongs to the second edition. VD16 F-2252. Examples of the many famous families depicted are members of the Fugger, Pfister, Sattelin, Vogelin, Ravenspurger families. There is a coat of arms bookplate of Fr. Franc. Paul de Smitmer dated 1770 to pastedown + a later small name Gzell and partial date to flyleaf (Fairfax Murray 49, Brunet I,235).

A destra in basso:"Matteo Florimi For. in Siena". Incisione veramente bella e in ottima tiratura.
