      - Strassburg, B. Jobin, 1579. Folio (302 x 200mm). pp. (12), 643, (1), (34), title with attractive woodcut border and text printed in red and black, 1 large woodcut portrait and 30 large woodcuts in the text. Contemporary calf, spine with 4 raised bands. Very scarce first German edition of this famous work on agriculture, gardening, cattle raising, as well as hunting and hawking. Chapters XLV, XLVI and XLVII concern falconry. The work was first published as 'Praedium rusticum' 1554 by Carolus Stephanus (French Charles Estienne). An amazingly popular French version 'L'agriculture et maison rustique' was first published in Paris 1564, translated by his son-in-law, Jean Liébault, it became a Renaissance bestseller with at least 80 editions by the fall of Napoleon. The work was translated into the English, German, Dutch, Italian and Scandinavian languages. It is a veritable encyclopedia of country living, with large sections on orchards and fruit. Charles Estienne belonged to the famous dynasty of Parisian printers, he was however a poor businessman and died imprisoned in 1561 at the Châtelet. "Dieser Übersetzung lag eine der Ausgaben von Charles Estienne et Jean Liébault, 'L'Agriculture et maison rustique' zugrunde, die bereits Jean de Clamorgans 'La chasse du loup' als Anhang hatte und zwischen 1567 und 1578 erschienen ist" (Lindner 563.01). The fine woodcuts are after Tobias Stimmer, J. Amman among others probably cut by the printer Bernard Jobin himself. The work consists of seven parts: 1. Vom Lustgarten; 4. Von Wisen und Matten; 5. Von Ackerfeldern.; 6. Vom Weydwerck, Hawung der Wald und Gehölz.; 7. Von der Wolffjagt. Beschrieben vom Herrn Johan von Clamorgan.Lindner 563.01; Thiébaud p. 358. [Attributes: First Edition]

Consilia Sive Responsa, Quae Quidem Extant Omnia: Nunc Demum Multo Diligentius Quam unquam Antea Castigata, & Multis in Locs Illustrata. Cum Indice Rerum Copiosissimo. Lyons: Apud Carolum Pesnot, 1579. [iv], 789, [71] pp. Main text in parallel columns. Folio (15" x 10-1/2"). Recent quarter pigskin over cloth retaining portions of original calf boards, recent cloth ties, raised bands and lettering piece to spine, cloth-covered pastedowns, marbled free endpapers. Rubbing to calf portions of boards, preliminaries re-hinged but starting at foot. Title printed within ornate woodcut architectural border, woodcut head-pieces and decorated initials. Light toning to text, some soiling to title page, light dampstaining to margins in places, inkspots to edges of text block and a few leaves. Upper margin closely trimmed with some loss to headlines in first quarter of text, top and fore-edge of title page trimmed with some loss. Early struck-through signature to foot of title page, interior otherwise clean. * Cravetta was a renowned Piedmontese jurist who practiced in Milan. "If Cravetta says so, that's enough," ran a popular assessment of his authority. The first collection of his consilia was published in 1566. Another followed in 1572. The contents of both were combined in a single volume, with some additions and subtractions, in 1575. Our 1579 edition contains the 326 consilia found in the 1566 and 1572 editions and 3 responsa on behalf of Cravetta's son-in-law, Hector a Rubeis. Cravetta believed in the limitation of the absolute power of princes. This is the subject of Consilium 241, which became a standard text on the subject. Complete in itself, this collection was later continued by other publishers to comprise six parts in all (1000 consilia). OCLC locates 5 copies of our 1579 imprint, 1 in North America (at the Library of Congress).         Le Digest des Briefes Originals, Et des Choses Concernants Eux

1579. An Important Early Work on Writs Theloall, Simon. Le Digest des Briefes Originals, Et des Choses Concernants Eux. London: In Aedibus Richardi Tottelli, 1579. [viii], 424 ff. Includes dedication and table. Octavo (6" x 4"). Recent period-style vellum with lapped edges. Spine ends bumped, crack in text block between title page and following leaf. Some toning to text, light soiling, faint dampstaining to a few leaves, early owner signature and annotations to title page, other annotations in similar hand to a few other leaves, including a manuscript to the rear endleaves. A handsome copy. * First edition. An important early work on writs, Theloall's Digest owes its origin to the suggestion of Staunford that it would be a good idea if lawyers would write treatises on the other titles of the abridgments similar to his study of the Title "Prerogative." Staunford illustrated his meaning by showing how the Title "Brief" might be treated. Theloall chose this title, and wrote a treatise on it for his own use. The manuscript, having been lent, eventually found its way to a printer. "It deserved to be printed, as it is the most orderly treatise on procedure, founded on the Year Books, that had yet appeared... Historically, it comes between the older commentaries upon writs and the modern books on procedure.": Holdsworth, A History of English Law V:381. A second edition was published in 1678.         Rare Autographed Letter Signed in Italian

Rome, 1579. unbound. 1 page, 11 x 8.5 inches, Rome, December 23, 1579. Written in Italian to an unknown correspondent, explaining that their colleague Luigi Rucellai has become seriously ill, expressing concern that he has not made a will, and advising him not to raise any difficulty concerning his interest in the colleague's estate. Integral leaf still attached without the address panel; otherwise in very good condition for a 450-year-old document. He was the son of Pier Luigi Farnese, the Duke of Parma, who was murdered in 1547. At age 14 he was nominated Cardinal by his Grandfather, the then-recently elected Pope Paul III. In later years he was the Papal Legate to Charles V and was responsible for building the Church of Gesu in Rome. In his lifetime he amassed one of the greatest collections of Renaissance Art known to this day.

Ragionevol' Forma et Vera Postura del' Isola di Maiorica.

1579 - Ancona: F. Salvioni, 1579-80. 130 x 85mm. A map of Majorca within a circle with only a few place names and three sea monsters. It was engraved by Michel'Angelo Marrelli for 'Diporti Notterni Dialloghi.', a small military manual that contained 28 maps of islands. The author, Francesco Ferreti (1523-93), was a Knight of the Order of St Stephen, which was founded by Cosimo I de' Medici to help fight the Ottomans and pirates of the Mediterranean and had participated at the great Battle of Lepanto less than a decade earlier. Dedicated to Francesco de'Medici, Cosimo's son and successor as Grand Duke of Tuscany, the manual's maps are of the Mediterranean islands most at risk, with a map of Britain being the only exception.

In Venetia, presso Francesco Ziletti, 1579. PRIMA EDIZIONE in 5 atti, in versi endecasillabi sdruccioli. Cat. ci C.A. Chiesa, Teatro italiano del Cinquecento, n. 115. A. Mango. La Commedia in lingua nel Cinquecento, n. 122. In 8vo (cm. 14,5); cartina colorata del Settecento; pp. (16), carte 80. Al verso dell?ultima carta preliminare ritratto dell?Autore in xilografia. Axs

        Planisphaeriorum universalium theorica.

Pesaro, Girolamo Concordia, 1579 - 4to (250 x 180 mm), pp [vii] 128 [2] with woodcut of a planisphere on title and numerous fine diagrams and a few illustrations in the text; a fine, unpressed copy in contemporary vellum, remains of ties, upper edge of board a bit worn. £7500First edition of this treatise on the planisphere by one of the most prominent figures in the renaissance of the mathematical sciences. Dealing with spherical trigonometry on a two-dimensional surface, this book is in two parts. In the first, Monte discusses the planisphere of Gemma Frisius, and at the end gives instructions for its construction (with diagrams). He demonstrates also how the celestial sphere can be projected onto a plane. The second part considers the planisphere of Juan de Rojas (the inventor of the universal astrolabe), which Gemma Frisius described as a sort of perspective, with the viewer at an infinite distance.Monte (1545-1607) studied mathematics at Padua and later at Urbino. He became the friend and pupil of Federico Commandino, whose translation of Pappus he edited and published. Galileo wrote to him, and thus began an exchange of correspondence on scientific matters. Monte secured for Galileo an appointment to the chair of mathematics at Pisa and later at Padua. 'Guidobaldo was Galileo's patron and friend for twenty years and possibly the greatest single influence on the Mechanics of Galileo. In addition to giving Galileo advice on statics, Guidobaldo discussed projectile motion with him, and both scientists reportedly conducted experiments together on the trajectories of cannonballs' (P.L. Rose in DSB).Provenance: signature of George Strachan ('G Strachanus 1611') on title; 'George Strachan of the Mearns was one of the most intellectually distinguished of the wandering Scots scholars of the seventeenth century; he was a Latin poet, an accomplished mathematician (a friend of Marinus Ghetaldus of Ragusa), and a pioneer arabist' (T.A. Birrell, 'Some Scottish Books in the Old Royal Library', in The Renaissance in Scotland (1994), A.A. MacDonald et al. eds, p 414); engraved armorial Hopetoun bookplateCinti 4; Riccardi II, 179

An Atlas of England and Wales.]

[London: Christopher Saxton, 1579]. - Folio (17 4/8 x 12 inches). Letterpress index, double-page engraved plate showing coats of arms and a table of counties in full contemporary hand-colour, 35 double-page engraved maps (Yorkshire folding), after Saxton by Hogenberg, Lenaert Terwoot, Cornelis de Hooghe, Augustine Ryther, Francis Scatter, and Nicholas Reynolds, (lacking engraved frontispiece showing Queen Elizabeth, maps of Cornwall and Yorkshire replaced with maps from Philip Lea edition of Saxton ca.1689), extra-illustrated with 4 additional maps tipped in (see below), all but 3 maps in FINE FULL CONTEMPORARY HAND COLOUR (Cornwall and additional map of Buckingham plain, Yorkshire in contemporary outline colour) (some minor mostly marginal soiling, map of Norfolk browned, one or two early repairs to folds on verso). Contemporary limp vellum (stained, nearly detached, lacking two pairs of leather ties). Provenance: Early annotations indicating ownership by the Stanley family, the Earls of Derby, and owners of Macclesfield Castle in the 16th-century; 19th-century North Library bookplate of the Earls of Macclesfield on the front paste-down dated 1860, discreet blind-stamp on first two pages. First edition, with nine maps bearing Seckford's pre-1576 motto ("Pestis patriae pigricies"), and twenty-four his later motto ("Industria naturam ornate"), the index is in the fourth setting with a four-line heading and three columns, there are eighty-three coats of arms and one blank, and the general map, Northamptonshire and Norfolk are all in the second state. The paper bears the crossed-sword watermark. The additional maps are: Seller, J. Buckinamiae comitatus vulgo Buckingham Shire. London printed and sold by Thomas and John Bowles, 1733; Boazio, B. [Irlandiae accurata descriptio.[London, 1599], left-hand sheet only; Ortelius, A. Eryn. Hiberniae Britannicae insulae. [Antwerp, 1584]; Ortelius, A. Scotiae tabula. [Antwerp, c. 1582]. The index has been annotated in a late 16th-century hand to including the additional maps of Ireland and Scotland by Ortelius, the same hand has annotated the maps of Cheshire to show Macclesfield, the map of Lancaster to show Harrington Park (owned by ancestors of the Stanley family) and directions to points of interest from Hornby, the map of Westmorland with directions to Penrith. Christopher Saxton, widely considered the father of British cartography, was the first mapmaker to comprehensively survey the counties of England and Wales. The map of the entire country was the earliest large-scale representation of England and the regional maps were, in many cases, the first for their respective areas. Published in a magnificent volume in 1579, his compilation was the first atlas devoted to the complete depiction of one country and formed the basis of English regional mapping for more than a century. Saxton grew up in Dunningly, Yorkshire and received his early training in surveying from the town vicar, John Rudd. Educated at Cambridge, Saxton's abilities caught the attention of Thomas Seckford, Royal Surveyor to the Queen. At this time, state officials were beginning to realize the political and administrative advantage of accurate maps, while public interest in cartography was in the midst of a dramatic surge. Largely in response to these factors, Queen Elizabeth charged Seckford with the task of procuring an atlas of England and Wales. An unprecedented standard of accuracy was achieved and in keeping with the Queen's intention that the atlas be a symbolic statement of national prominence, all care was taken to ensure that it was also beautifully produced. Each map bears the Royal Arms as a symbol of Queen Elizabeth's supervision and endorsement. Purchased at Sotheby's sale of the Macclesfield Library, March 15, 2007. Vecellio (1530-1600), a cousin of Titian and author of the famous costume book Degli habiti antichi et moderni, was commissioned in the 1580s by Odorico Pillone to decorate the books of his library - the majority were given visible fore-edge paintings. The library remained intact until the 1950s when it was purchased by Pierre Berès from the heirs of Sir Thomas Brooks and subsequently dispersed.

Parma: S. Vitto, 1579. First edition "of a rare book of considerable chemical interest containing over fifty inventions and secrets on gunpowder formulations, weapons, mechanical devices, and surveying methods. Many inventions relate to the art of war, but others are for industrial as well as leisure purposes. Most remarkable are recipes for making fireworks for military and festive use. The unusual strong cutting of the blocks (three signed C.R. by the blockcutter) is considered by Mortimer to be similar to that used in the figures in Thesaurus artificiosae memoriae (Venice, 1579), by Cosma Rosselio... "Isacchi (1536?-after 1596), an engineer of Reggio, was in charge of the decorations for festivities in Bologna, Mantua, Novellara, and Reggio. In 1596 he became the chief of artillery for Duke Alfonso of Mantua."-Neville, I, p. 682. Other inventions are a surveying instrument shaped like a dagger and an interesting telegraphic device, a heliograph worked with mirrors. This is an uncommon book. J.E. Hodgkin commented in his Rariora (1902), III, p. 8-"This is in some respects one of the most remarkable books on fireworks I possess. I have never seen another copy, nor is the book described in any work I have consulted." Signature dated 1742 of "Soranzo" on free front-endpaper.
