        Liber Chronicarum (Single leaf)

      Anton Koberger for Sebald Schreyer and Sebastian Kammermeister, Nuremberg 1493 - Title: "De regno polonie et eius initio." This is an original uncolored woodcut depicting the Kingdom of Poland from the Latin issue of Liber Chronicarum (or Nuremberg Chronicle) by Hartman Schedel (1440-1514). Maybe the earliest printed map of Poland. "De regno polonie et eius initio" made with great fantasy. Showing townviews, waterways, buildings, ships etc. This chronicle was the most extensively illustrated book of the 15th century and a milestone in printing history. It contained hundreds of illustrations, ranging from portraits and Biblical scenes to human monstrosities. But it is for the town views, often the earliest views of the cities depicted, that the Chronicle is best known today. Just a couple of small marginal stains; some red underlining; margins and edges very nice. Overall, very good.       Nuremberg: Anton Koberger, 12 July, 1493. Imperial folio (433 × 302 mm), 323 leaves (of 326; without first and last blank, and leaf CCLXI which is blank except for the printed headline and folio number). Seventeenth-century Italian mottled calf, rebacked with original spine laid down, spine divided in seven compartments by raised bands, gilt lettered in second, others gilt with a wide decorative roll enclosed by a smaller roll, sides with decorative roll border, marbled endpapers, edges decoratively sprinkled in red and blue. 63 lines plus headline, Gothic letter, xylographic title-page, 645 woodcut illustrations by Pleydenwurff and Wohlgemuth repeated to a total of 1,809, some full-page, others double-page, including a double-page map of the world and double-page map of Europe. From the library of the Trappist monastery of Buonsollazzo in Tuscany, part of the Italian Congregation of St Bernard, with ink ownership inscriptions to first page of text (fol. 1r) at foot, one of the intermediate blank leaves (fol. CCLVIIII), and at foot of fol. CCLXVI, the latter inscription dated 1618; very occasional minor ink marginalia, a few capitals supplied in black ink in what appears to be a 17th-century Italian hand. Some skilful leather repairs, the xylographic title skilfully extended at outer and lower margin, a little thumb-soiling to the lower outer corners, a few minor marks or stains, a very good copy, the paper generally strong and fresh. First edition of the Nuremberg Chronicle, the most extensively illustrated book of the 15th century, a universally acknowledged masterpiece of complex design. Compiled by the Nuremberg doctor, humanist and bibliophile Hartmann Schedel (1440–1514), the text is a year-by-year account of notable events in world history from the Creation to the year of publication, including the invention of printing at Mainz, the exploration of the Atlantic and of Africa, as well as references to the game of chess and to medical curiosities, including what is believed to be the first depiction of Siamese twins. The book is especially famed for its series of over 1,800 woodcuts depicting religious subjects from the Old and New Testaments, classical and medieval history, and a large series of city views (including Augsburg, Bamberg, Basel, Cologne, Nuremberg, Rome, Ulm and Vienna), as well as a double-page map of Europe including the British Isles, Iceland and Scandinavia, and a Ptolemaic world map apparently sourced from the frontispiece of Pomponius Mela's Cosmographia (Venice, Ratdolt, 1488). The work was carefully planned, with manuscript Examplar volumes being made for both the Latin and the German text version that followed closely afterwards: the sketches in these confirm the active involvement in the project of the young Albrecht Dürer, then just completing his apprenticeship in Pleydenwurff and Wohlgemuth's workshop. Edition limited to 300 numbered copies, each with an original leaf tipped-in. Hamel 103. *The Liber Chronicarum (commonly known as the Nuremberg Chronicle) was issued by Anton Koberger in a Latin edition in June 1493, followed by a German translation six months later. Compiled by Hartmann Schedel, the text comprised a history of the world from creation up to the date of publication, and was illustrated with numerous woodcuts - a few from blocks designed by Albrecht Durer. The volume contained one of the earliest printed maps of Northern Europe, and the first authentic views of many cities, plus numerous portraits of popes, kings, etc. Three years after the Koberger editions, Johann Schonsperger of Augsburg issued a plagiarised or pirated small folio edition of the German translation, with woodcuts in reduced size, copied roughly from the Koberger blocks. The following year he printed a Latin edition, from which the present leaf (which is quite plain, with no illustrations or rubrication) was taken.

      Anton Koberger, Nuremberg 1493 - 12" x 17" [30cm x 43cm] incunabulum folio leaf, museum framed. Wonderful leaf from the 1493 Latin 'Liber Chronicarum', featuring a half-page woodcut of Rhodes [Rhodis], as well as a separate 5.5" x 6.75" woodcut of 'human vices' which scholars now believe is probably attributable to the great Albrecht Dürer, in Very Good condition. Deaccessioned from the Andrew Dickson White Museum of Art, Cornell University. In a a simple but elegant maplewood (perhaps cherry) frame [17.5" x 21.75"], under glass, without museum markings [as others from this single acquisition of several pieces were]. Leaf is tipped in and unmatted. Well preserved with just a bit of darkening in areas, a rough right edge where the leaf was separated, and a tiny bit of loss at the lower left edge; otherwise excellent, with no foxing. Woodcut of Rhodes by Pleydenwurff and Wohlgemut is one of the few 'realistic' views in the Chronicarum and is the earliest known image of Rhodes, making this particular leaf highly sought-after, as does the smaller woodcut of figures representing vices now attributed to Wohgemut's student, Albrecht Dürer. Latin text by Hartmann Schedel. Recto is mostly woodcuts ("Linea Christi", "Linea Regus", etc.). The Liber Chronicarum, bound, fetches $150,000 or more at auction. Note: There are artists specializing in applying period-style watercolor to such woodcuts, greatly enhancing their visual appeal.       Nuremberg: Anton Koberger for Sebald Schreyer, 1493. First edition and an outstanding copy of the first illustrated encyclopedia published at the dawn of the discovery period. As a comprehensive contemporary picture of geographical and historical knowledge, the “Nuremberg Chronicle” as it is called, offers nothing less than a history of the world, and, in its own fashion, expanded the barriers of local cities and states just as the transatlantic voyages expanded the boundaries of the world. As a representative picture of 15th- century geographical and historical knowledge, the work is unsurpassed among incunables, in which books of a religious and liturgical nature predominate. A milestone in the history of printing as well, it contains more illustrations than had ever appeared in a printed book, and as a technical challenge of incunable book production, was superseded only by the first printed book, Gutenberg’s Bible, also published in Nuremberg. The magnificent woodcut views (of which 31 are double-page) are in most cases the first printed views of the cities and towns they depict, and offer a representative view of how 15th- century readers pictured places they would most likely never visit. Many, such as the important double-page view of Jerusalem, were based on the most up-to-date reports of travellers (usually merchants). The colophon credits the artists Michael Wolgemut and Wilhelm Pleydenwurff for their contribution, a detail with fascinating implication, since Albrecht Dürer was at this time an apprentice in their workshop. The work’s author, Hartmann Schedel (1440-1514) was a physician and an important humanist and book collector, whose outstanding library provided much of the research materials for the work. (Schedel’s private library is “today among the most precious collections of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek in Munich, Germany”.) The original publisher’s contract for the work is extant, providing a revealing window on the complicated production of this enormous project (see further A. Wilson, The Making of the Nuremberg Chronicle). The audacity of his theme, the success of its treatment, the beauty and majesty of his verse, have ensured that his poem never lost its reputation. The picture of divine justice is entirely unclouded by Dante&#146;s own political prejudices, and his language never falls short of what he describes.&#148; PMM <br> These very early printings of the COMMEDIA are rare and precious. Such rare Venetian printings as this of 1493 were printed in a very small numbers and are seldom encountered.

As a representative picture of 15th- century geographical and historical knowledge, the work is unsurpassed among incunables, in which books of a religious and liturgical nature predominate. A milestone in the history of printing as well, it contains more illustrations than had ever appeared in a printed book, and as a technical challenge of incunable book production, was superseded only by the first printed book, Gutenberg&#146;s Bible, also published in Nuremberg. The magnificent woodcut views (of which 31 are double-page) are in most cases the first printed views of the cities and towns they depict, and offer a representative view of how 15th- century readers pictured places they would most likely never visit. Many, such as the important double-page view of Jerusalem, were based on the most up-to-date reports of travellers (usually merchants). The colophon credits the artists Michael Wolgemut and Wilhelm Pleydenwurff for their contribution, a detail with fascinating implication, since Albrecht Dürer was at this time an apprentice in their workshop. The work&#146;s author, Hartmann Schedel (1440-1514) was a physician and an important humanist and book collector, whose outstanding library provided much of the research materials for the work. Complete: 116 leaves, unfoliated, with signatures, 40 lines, gothic letter, spaces for capital initials, some with guide letters, full-page woodcuts of the Virgin and Child in glory and of Frederick III on recto and verso of first leaf, each repeated at fols. 82 verso and 87 recto, 167 smaller woodcuts, 166 of them within pictorial woodcut panel borders, 3 leaves of text and the small woodcut on fol. 83 recto within broad swirling woodcut floral borders, a 13-line woodcut acanthus initial on fol. 2 recto, repeated on fol. 5 recto. From the library of Eric Sexton, with his bookplate (his sale, Christie's New York, 1981, lot 209). Spine with slight restoration, corners slightly dampstained, most visible at end, 2 ff. in quire 2A apparently misbound, B1 rehinged, tiny stain touching woodcuts on D1?4, a few fore-edges or upper margins with short tears, just touching borders in a few cases, some carefully repaired, some slight soiling or browning to a few leaves only. An excellent copy with good margins, the superb illustrations in strong dark impressions. First and only edition of this fine uncoloured woodcut book, the only book from this press, probably the most beautifully illustrated incunabulum ever printed in Germany, justly celebrated for its superb woodcut illustrations and borders. The book is notably rare, with a mere handful of complete copies appearing in commerce in the past 60 years and only two in auction records. This is the Sexton copy, which has been in a single private owner's hands since its purchase at auction in 1981. The Marienpsalter is the first book printed by the Cistercian order and the first in a series of books sponsored by the Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian. According to the preface, the author's manuscript was conveyed to the imperial chancellery in 1489, but permission to print was only granted after Nitzschewitz, Imperial Chaplain (+1503), had presented his work to Emperor Frederick III and his son Maximilian in an audience in September 1492. The fact that the names of both are given here can be read as an act of homage and gratitude for the subsidy to the printing costs which had been asked for from Frederick, and then granted by his successor. Though the book was completed in 1492, it cannot have been printed before the end of 1493 since Maximilian is described in the preface as emperor; he succeeded his late father in August 1493. The Bodleian copy has a purchase date of 1496, which provides the terminus ad quem. The Cistercian monastery at Zinna is unlikely to have had its own press. The types of the book were previously in the possession of Konrad Kachelofen at Leipzig, so the book was either printed by him (perhaps during his absence from Leipzig in 1495?6) or with types borrowed from him late in 1493. (For more on the identity of the printer, see Geldner I p. 268 and Hühns.) Hühns attributes the sumptuous illustration of the work to two artists who seem to have been trained at the Magdeburg workshop and also worked for Simon Koch and Moritz Bardis. The work stems from the revival in 1475 of the old Rosenkranz Brüderschaft "Fraternis de Rosario" by Jakob Sprenger in Cologne, as signalled by the distinctive woodcut border of roses swirling around three sides of the rectos of fols. 2, 5, and 17 and around the small woodcut on fol. 83 recto. The "Fraternis de Rosario" hoped that the daily recital of prayers, which were mandatory for membership of the organisation, would protect against the growing power of the Turks. Sprenger (1436?1496) was also famous as co-author, with Heinrich Krämer (Institoris) of the Malleus Maleficarum, 1487, the notorious witch-hunters' manual.

A very interesting and perhaps important copy of the first and ultimate coffee table book. When it was published the Chronicle was the most elaborately illustrated book ever produced - almost more pictures than text, and certainly the biggest. A traditional world history it is basically a chronicle of events drawn largely from Biondo, Forresti, and Piccolomini, among them Gutenberg's invention of printing and mistakenly, Cam and Behaim's supposed discovery of the New World. But the glory of the work lies in its sumptuous woodcut illustrations - some now attributed to the young apprentice Albrecht Durer (stylistically not far removed from his Apocalypse) and his first illustrated book; it straddles in style and content the medieval and modern worlds. Koberger, the publisher who also probably commissioned the work was the young Durer's godfather and may well have deliberately provided his godson with the opportunity to demonstrate his genius. Of particularly topographical importance are the double page maps, that of Europe is the earliest to appear in print, and the world map one of only three pre-1500 to show Portugal's knowledge of the African coast, as well as the city views which in many instances constitute the earliest accurate representations of those places available today. Of considerable significance in art history also, this is one of the very first incunables illustrated by known, named artists. Apart from being the most lavish book production of its day the Chronicle was also the first to successfully integrate large scale illustration and text. About 400 copies of this monument of printing are believed to survive.The continuous and systematic annotations on every page of the volume represent or indicate mainly textual corrections, often very minor, suggesting (but no more) a proof read or editorial copy. The initials S.S. which appear in ms dated 1496 are also those of Sebald Schreyer the financial patron of the undertaking - though his personal connexion was with Nuremberg rather than Regensburg. Schedel's map of the world, from the German edition of the Nuremberg Chronicle: one of the earliest obtainable world maps, here with very fine original hand colouring. Schedel's map is one of the earliest obtainable world maps, and, visually, one of the most evocative of its period. Published just 40 years after the invention of printing, Schedel's map presents the world as seen just prior to Columbus' voyage. The engraving also reflects medieval attitudes toward peoples of distant lands, with grotesque creatures to the left of the map recto, and additional images on verso. Schedel's World map is based upon Ptolemy, omitting Scandinavia, southern Africa and the Far East, and depicting the Indian Ocean as landlocked. The depiction of the World is surrounded by the figures of Shem, Japhet and Ham, and the sons of Noah, who re-populated the Earth after the Flood. On the left, printed from a separate block, are pictures of various mythical creatures, based upon classical and early mediaeval travellers' accounts, including "a six-armed man, possibly based on a file of Hindu dancers so aligned that the front figure appears to have multiple arms; a six-fingered man, a centaur, a four-eyed man from a coastal tribe in Ethiopia; a dog-headed man from the Simien Mountains, a cyclops, one of those men whose heads grow beneath their shoulders, one of the crook-legged men who live in the desert and slide along instead of walking; a strange hermaphrodite, a man with one giant foot only (stated by Solinus to be used a parasol but more likely an unfortunate sufferer from elephantisis), a man with a huge underlip (doubtless seen in Africa), a man with waist-length hanging ears, and other frightening and fanciful creatures of a world beyond." The World map also includes a large island off the west coast of Africa, which may relate to the account of Martin Behaim's voyage to the region, which is referenced by Schedel in the text. Schedel's Liber Chronicarum: Das Buch der Croniken und Geschichten (loosely translated as World Chronicle, but popularly referred to as the Nuremberg Chronicle, based upon the city of its publication), was the first secular book to include the style of lavish illustrations previously reserved for Bibles and other liturgical works. The work was intended as a history of the World, from Creation to 1493, with a final section devoted to the anticipated Last Days of the World. It is without question the most important illustrated secular work of the 15th Century and its importance rivals the early printed editions of Ptolemy's Geographia and Bernard von Breydenbach's Perengrinatio in Terram Sanctam in terms of its importance in the development and dissemination of illustrated books in the 15th Century. Published in Nuremberg by Anton Koberger, the book was printed in Latin and 5 months later in German (translated by George Alt), and enjoyed immense commercial success. However, copies of either the Latin or German editions with original hand colouring are of the utmost rarity. Liber chronicarum. Nuremberg: Anton Koberger for Sebald Schreyer and Sebastian Kammermeister, 12 July 1493]. First edition, precceding the German language edition by just over 5 months. Large folio (16 15/16 x 12 inches; 430 x 305 mm.). Gothis type., sixty-four lines and headline. Table and parts of the text in double columns. 325 leaves([20], CCLVI, [5], [I, blank], CCLVII-CCXCIX). Woodcut title and 1,809 woodcut illustrations, of which 1,164 are repeats, from 645 blocks (Sydney Cockerell&#146;s count in Some German Woodcuts of the Fifteenth Century (Hammersmith: Kelmscott Press, 1897), pp. 35-36) by Michael Wolgemut, Wilhelm Pleydenwurff, and their workshop, including (supposedly) the young Albrecht Dürer, including two double-page maps of the world and of Europe, twenty-nine town views extending across two pages, and eight full-page cuts. One large (fourteen-line) iniatial in blue, red and brown, other large (four-, six-, seven- and eight-line) iniatials in red and blue. This copy contains the three numbered leaves (CCLVIIII-CCLXI) blank except for headlines, and the five additional (unnumbered) leaves containing the De Sarmacia regione and the poem on Maximilian, and the subsequent blank. The portrait of Pope Joan ("Johannes Septimus," verso of leaf CLXIX), usually missing, is present and unmutilated. The double-page map of Europe is free from restoration, with full margins visible. Sixteenth-century calf over wooden boards, neatly rebacked, retaining the original spine. A few marginal restorations and minor repairs, several leaves reinforced at inner margin, a few leaves slightly smaller and probably supplied. A few early ink marginalia. Overall a very good, unusually clean copy and an extremely tall copy of a book which is seldom found so close to its original uncut size. Housed in a custom clamshell, gilt-stamped. The most extensively illustrated book of the fifteenth century. The artists, Michael Wolgemut, the well-known teacher of Albrecht Dürer, and his stepson, Wilhelm Pleydenwurff, are mentioned in the colophon. The woodcuts comprise religious subjects from the Old and New Testament, classical and medieval history, and a large series of city views (including Augsburg, Bamberg, Basel, Cologne, Nuremberg, Rome, Ulm, Vienna), as well as a double-page map of Europe and a large Ptolemaic world map. The text is a year-by-year account of notable events in world history from the creation down to the year of publication, including the invention of printing at Mainz, the exploration of the Atlantic and of Africa, as well as references to the game of chess and to medical curiosities, including what is believed to be the first depiction of Siamese twins.
