Alexandri Nevylii angli, de furoribus Norfolciensium - NEVILLE, Alexander - 1575. [3201460]
Henrici Binnemani, London 1575 - Each book with separate title, both within woodcut border, and with full-page heraldic device to verso, second title with printer's device. Lacking the 2 folding plates. Contemporary English calf, re-backed with red morocco spine label; dampstains, some quite heavy, and small marginal tears and worming; upper margins of text cut short, but all headlines intact. Marginalia and text corrections in a contemporary hand. From the library of the eminent Shakespearian scholar Charles Tyler Prouty, with his bookplate. First edition. Neville (1544-1614) was secretary to Matthew Parker, Archbishop of Canterbury. He composed the present account of Kett's rebellion in Norwich under Edward VI (1549). His work, though no apology, nonetheless included words which annoyed the Monarchy, and led to replacement of the offending pages. Here, the cancelled text remains. The second part is a description of the city of Norwich and its antiquities to which a list of its mayors and sheriffs is added. An important work on one of the principal popular protests against the social change in England resulting from the Reformation. [Attributes: First Edition]
