The first printing of the first volume of the Memoirs of this scientific organization which was formed to promote and secure necessary husbandry in the early Republic. With a list of the by-laws and the original members, who included Noah Webster, Rev. Dr. White, John Dickinson, John Jay, Tench Coxe, George Clinton, and many other luminaries from the beginnings of the United States. Bound with Richard Peters' Statistical Account of the Schuylkill Permanent Bridge, the first covered bridge in America.This account was first published by Jane Aitken in 1807 and was then appended--with title page and original pagination--to this first volume of the Society's Memoirs. With in-text woodcuts, two engraved plates, and a folding table. A most attractive copy in mottled calf, with morocco label. (Rink, Technical Americana, 2635; AI 15916; Sabin 62036).
