A Short Character of His Ex. T. E. of W - [SWIFT, JONATHAN] - 1711.
London: Printed for William Coryton, Bookseller, 1711, 1711. First edition, one of three issues from the same printing; Teerink describes this one first. Teerink 527; NCBEL II, 1059: ESTC T48134. Text a little foxed and smudged; very good copy, with wide margins.. Small octavo, later brown quarter calf by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, tan cloth boards, gilt lettering. A famous attack on Thomas, Earl of Wharton (1648-1715), a controversial figure whom Swift makes out to be much worse than he could have possibly been: "Swift pictured Wharton as a hardened, greedy politician, bawdy and profane, whose corrupt addiction to wealth and pleasure had cost Ireland dearly" - DNB.
