Animal Farm (Rare First State Dustwrapper) - George Orwell - 1945.
Secker and Warburg 1945 - First edition, first printing published in 1945 by Secker and Warburg in the true first state dustwrapper with 'Searchlight Books' imprint to verso of the wrapper. Only 4500 copies!!! Book: Vg, War economy binding and paper. Original green boards with white titles, corners and head and foot of the spine are lightly rubbed, a couple of light marks only, thin pages are tightly bound and lightly toned, ink number 151 written on the title page. The original first state wrapper has undergone sympathetic restoration, mainly to upper panel and spine, particularly where there were areas of loss. The flaps are clean and unclipped (priced at 6s) Upper panel now presents well having undergone considerable restoration, spine hinges are rubbed along lengths and the titles to top of spine have not been re-done. Rear panel with 'An early list for 1945' is looking presentable, light soiling and toning. The verso of the wrapper has the rare 'Searchlight Books, Lion and the Unicorn' by Orwell part printed wraps. Basically during the war, paper was at a shortage and publisher's were printing on the backs of old wrappers, maps etc, re-using whatever they had. In short, an extremely rare, iconic title in its rare first state dustwrapper. If you want an excellent copy of this expect to be paying £2000 or over. This copy has had considerable restoration but presents nicely and is offered at a fraction of the price commanded by fine copies. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
