The Balla Hissar and the city of Caubul - ATKINSON, James - 1842. [1279399]
1842 - London: Henry Graves & Co., 1842. Tinted lithograph with hand colour. Sheet size 325 x 440mm. A view of Bala-Hissar Fortress, overlooking Kabul, Plate 20 from "Sketches of Afghanistan" by James Atkinson. Atkinson (1780-1852), a doctor, journalist and scholar of Persian, became surgeon to the 55th native Infantry in 1833. Between 1838 and 1841 he served in Kabul during the First Afghan War. Fortunately for him he left the country in December 1840 to become Superintending Surgeon of the Cawnpore Division, thus avoiding the massacre of Elphinstone's army when it was forced to retreat from Kabul the following year. Besides these drawings he also published his diary, as ' The Expedition into Affghanistan', also 1842, in which he compared the British invasion to the Stone of Sisyphus.
