1985 - KENNEDY, Jacqueline. Autograph letter signed. [New York], March 5, 1985. Single sheet of blue unlined stationery, measuring 6 by 8 inches. $1850.Wonderful and extremely complimentary signed autograph letter written entirely in Jackie Kennedy's hand on her personal stationery to art book publisher Georges Herscher concerning a book he published about Jean Francois Champollion, the translator of the Rosetta Stone.The letter, dated March 5, 1985. and written on a sheet of Jackie Kennedy's address-embossed blue stationery neatly torn from a tablet, reads: "Dear M. Herscher, The Champollion is the most magnificent book I have ever seen. I cannot believe that I really have it in my library. You must know that there are no words with which to express my gratitude. How wonderful to have published such a book! With my deepest thanks ad the hopes of seeing you in New York. Very Sincerely, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis." The recipient, Georges Herscher, was an important art book publisher. Though he was the CFO of Hachette in the 1950s, he had more specialized aspirations. In 1971, he founded Editions du Chêne, publishing many groundbreaking works thereafter, generally in limited runs of 300-5000, including books devoted to André Kertész, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Eugene, Atget, Robert Doisneau, Jacques Henri Lartigue, Edouard Boubat, Diane Arbus, and Rem Koolhaas (including his first work). In 1980, he founded his own eponymous publishing concern, which he also ran. He produced fine art books until 1987. Fine condition. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
