Albert, Ernest & the Titanic - Murphy, Jamie - 2012.
Dublin: Distillers Press, 2012. First edition limited to 36 copies of which this is no. 24, signed by Colm TóibÃn who has written the introduction to this rather amazing book; oblong folio, pp. 176; 40 linoleum-cut illustrations; original grey cloth, printed paper cover label, slipcase to match; fine. Produced and written by Jamie Murphy. Introduction written by Colm TóibÃn. The culmination of Murphy's research for an MA in design, this work recounts the little-known story of the Titanic's on-board printers who traveled, and ultimately perished, on board the ship's maiden voyage. Abraham "Albert" Mishellany and Ernest Corben, who had previously worked as printers aboard the Titanic's sister ship the Olympic, made their living from designing and printing the ship's menus, notepads, stationery, calling cards, tickets, and programs. The present work's cast type and illustrations were printed directly from original linoleum blocks; most notably, one of the inks was made from coal retrieved from the ship's wreck site on the Atlantic floor. Introduction by TóibÃn. Out of print.
