A lovely large volume of this significant historical work by the English explorer, Walter Raleigh. The book was written during Raleigh's imprisonment by King James 1 in the Tower of London. In his Historie of the World Raleigh intended to " outline historical events from creation to modern times, drawing on the Bible, Greek mythology, and other sources" with this work. The History of the World contains five books which cover the history and events from creation to the Romans. The book has been expertly rebacked in leather with gilt titles retaining original leather boards. Portrait frontpiece with engraved title page. Repaired corners and some chips and bumps to the edges. The leather is slightly marked and in very good condition. Replaced end papers. The contents are clean, toned with some foxing in places. Some chipping to the pages. Four maps/plates are missing. Light pencil marks on reverse of one plate. 1143 pages. Contains 51 pages of maps and battle plans and tables. 35cm x 24.5cm x 7cm [Attributes: Hard Cover]
