- New York - D Appleton & Co. 1875 - The first three volumes of this fascinating travel guide,Picturesque Europe. Illustrated throughout, with hundreds of vignette and full page illustrations. In addition to this volume I has 21 full page plates, volume II 18 and volume III 20. Collated, volume II appears to be lacking title page andpossibly three plates. Bayard Taylor was an American poet, literary critic, translator, travel author and diplomat. HisPicturesque Europeseries was incredibly popular. Volumes I and the first 80 pages of volume II discussGreat Britain and Ireland, including Wales and the Isle of Wight. The volume then proceeds to Normandy, Jersey and the Rhine before touching on Spain and ending inNaples. Volume III startsin Norway before discussing Spain, The Lake of Geneva, Northern Italy, Sicily, Sweden, Switzerland and many more areasbefore finishing at The Danube. The numerous illustrations help to illuminate Taylor's descriptions and historical explanation on each location. Condition: In full blind stamped and gilt stamped morocco bindings. Externally, very smart with some rubbing to the extremities and to the joints. Internally, all volumes are firmly bound. Pages are generally bright with scattered spots to the endpapers and the odd spot throughout. Overall: VERY GOOD INDEED. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
